Couple of questions (Noobie Alert Warning) - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Questions & Answers

Hello, I am super new to xda and to phone rooting. I've recently got a Xiamoni Redmi Note 4 and I really want to root it to unlock the FULL potential of my phone. I'll keep the rest of this thread short by asking:
1. Does MIUI Version matter? I am currently on Global 8.5 l Stable 8.5.4.0 (MCFMIED) Android Version 7.0 NRD90M I am also on a snapdragon
2. Once I unlock my bootloader, is the bootloader unlocked for good?
3. Where can I find a systemless root guide for my phone? (FOR SNAPDRAGON)
4. What are custom roms exactly? What would you suggest?

1) IDK if MIUI version seriously matters but I'd highly recommend to update it to the latest stable.
2) Bootloader is locked for the security of phones, for common users. For further read, see this.
3) Search for "Magisk". You'll VERY easily find the guide and everything you need.
4) Custom ROM is technically an OS. Very usually they're just different flavors of Android. When you flash a custom rom in your phone you're basically changing the phone's OS. You usually get the benefit of getting a smoother, clutter-free phone with a custom rom, well obviously there're risks which you know (or can google).

Nope. I can't tell anything beside these facts. Nice reply. Only that I'd suggest avoiding miui roms and once rooted, flashing of a pure, aosp based Rom.

Stupid noob needs help

Hey guys !
I've been around here for many years but have allways been using Windows Mobile phones. I've had a Hero for about a year and i must say that i am very pleased with it. It works so damn good ! I've been flashing roms on windows mobile phones and even created roms my self.
However this Android / Linux world is so new to me that i have no idea what i need to do in order to simply flash a rom on my Hero!
What i get is that i need to root my device. There are some few guides for this in the wiki but i still do not know if my Hero is a Virgin og a Telus. How can i see this?
Also i see a lot of Linux based talk and commands (i presume) that i do not understand anything of. Do we have any desciption of the most common used commands and such stuff so new people like me can get a better understanding of what you guys are actually talking about?
When i learn all this i will edit the wiki with the information. And as i am new it is easier for me to fill in what is missing if you understand
.. And yes i have searched!

Theunlockr.com is an excellent source of information on rooting/flashing your Hero.

Seconded.
And when you're unlocked, check out Villain and Vanillain ROM's (check out previous post), definitely two of the best
if you want to know if your phone is rooted download and install "Super user" and run it,you will then know if your phone is rooted or not.
I,like you,was a WM user and found android to be more complicated, but in fact it´s not...once you root your phone and install Amon-RA recovery ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4549551&postcount=1 ) its much easier and simple to do things.
theres a sticky in this sub-forum with wiki-guides,read it!

True used a lot those roms.
Waiting patiently for a Vanillain rom based in eris dump.
Right now im still using AychTeeSee's just to be able to use the Buuf Theme
I'm in the exact same situation as Da9L . Could you please let me know if flashing a new ROM will also change the Firmware version?
Currently my firmware is 1.5. I've seen on a friend's G1 the voice search widget and I'm dying to get that on my device. From what I've been told, i need to get a newer firmware, but I've got no idea on how to do this.
Any help would be appreciated ^_^
Some questions:
So the short line of the process of flashing a custom rom is when using unbranded htc hero:
1. Downgrade my software to 1.76, as iam using the newest
2. Root the device acording to _this_ guide
3. Perform a backup
4. Flash the custom rom as i flash a stock rom?
Is that it? It leads me to some more questions
What is this "recovery image" and is there any reason to flash a new one?
And why is there any reason to change this at all ?
How do i get danish xt9 for sms?
And please i have a feeling that i am getting this wrong.. Can you please explain to me the procedure of doing all this ?
Is there any benefit by flashing a rom?
I mean the stock rom actually runs pretty good and is stable. A custom rom is likely to be a little more unstable than a stock rom, but often give you more speed and newer features. This is when we are talking Windows Mobile, but is it the same here? What are the pros and cons by flashing a custom rom over the stock rom?

It varies depending on the ROM tbh. It's a bit like the high-tech version of 'how long's a piece of string'?
Really, you're likely to get improved performance, root permissions, user interface tweaks, different versions of applications that are better than the default ones, maybe a custom kernel (if it's a 1.5 release you're looking at).
The custom kernels can have better performance due to optimisations in them. Not sure how much of this is like winmo (never had a winmo phone, all I know is that you are able to install alternative ROMs on them), but with android the core OS is open source, so you get more performance boosts under the hood.
Anyone able to add to that?

That sounds great. However, since this is so new to me i do not know what new tweaks and apps i will be able to use and get if you follow me? When i have flashed a new custom rom, propably android 2.1, i do not know what new things it has and therefore where and how to use these new functions. And does the real advantage in a custom rom also get to a normal user or is the advantages more directed at the developers or?

[Q] Confused new owner of Samsung Galaxy SII

Well,
I have just got my new samsung galaxy S-II white. For a start i know what is rooting and why it should be done to unlock the potential of the phone. Have read quite some threads in various forums over here, just to get more confused .
I am mainly tangled in the variety of ways and numerous methods of doing the same thing, or apparently the same thing with different objective and consequences.
Hence I need help to clear up the confusion with a simplified path to explore the device:
1. ROM, Kernel, Firmware..........are these different names for the same thing, or are they different. If they are different, at which level does rooting work, do I need to update all of them or some or one to get the rooted phone.
2. What are the different versions of ROM , Kernel and Firmware available and which ones are recommended. Is Gingerbread 2.3.4 a ROM or a firmware.
3. I have read a lot about custom cooked ROMs. For a newbie like me is there any recommendation. I am thinking about getting on to Cyanogen Mod, is it a ROM or a kernel or a firmware and is it the best all rounder in battery/performance/features ratio. If not then any other recommendations.
5. Insecure Kernel....?, is it a mandatory requirement for rooting, or rooting can be done without it. How do I find the one which is compatible with my phone version / region.
6. CF-Root, SuperOneClick, ROOT APP ????? which one is the safest with easier possibility of recovery (if anything goes bad) and most recommended.
7. Nandroid, ClockworkMod, Odin ???????????? what are these used for. Is it mandatory to use them before rooting to make phone backup images. Which one is the easiest and safest to use in case of a recovery situation.
8. Can I or do I update the original Samsung OTA firmware updates, once I have rooted the phone or if i have flashed with custom ROM/firmware/kernel like Cyanogen Mod.
Thats it for now. My Phone details are as follows (Settings -> About Phone):
Android Version:
2.3.4
BaseBand Version:
I9100XXKI1
Kernel Version:
2.6.35.7-I9100XWKI4-CL575468 [email protected] 143#2
Build Number:
GINGERBREAD.XWKI4
Would be really thankful if anyone can guide me and lot others like me to a more clear path to making our way through the world of Android and SGS-II.
Best Regards,
Cheers.
Lets see if I can answer all of your questions...
1. ROM is the software of the phone and kernel is the core of that software. As you might think, rooting ocurs in the core, so it affects the kernel.
2. ROMs you have a lot in this forum, as well as different kernels. Recomended are several (CM7, MIUI or Hypedroid for example).
3. CyanogenMod is a ROM, but cooking ROMs is more a term of changing the visual (icons, battery stats, animations, etc) more than building a ROM itself. You can build a ROM from it sources, but it's a totally different thing from cooking a ROM. If you want performance, you should seek a minimal ROM or some ROM that could let you easily add/delete components, to avoid having much load on the ROM and thus improving the phone. Also the kernel works a great deal in battery performance, you can see several discussion threads in the forum about them.
5. I think any rooted kernel is considered an insecure kernel, but I might be wrong on this one...
6. I would say CF-Root, its not complicated to follow and the result is the desired.
7. ClockworkMod is a custom recovery used to backup the phone (nandroid), flash ROMs and many other things. Odin is a PC flashing software used to flash directly to the phone. For a recovery you should use CWM.
8. If you update a stock ROM (or OTA update) into a rooted kernel, the kernel will be overwriten and you will loose root. You can follow the same steps to achieve root from there.

Need quick info on modding Z2 & specific advices

Hello ya all
I got my Z2 out of some deal, and I need to ask you couple of things, but first to explain myself.
1. I ALWAYS prefer AOSP rather than anything manufacturer made. Till now I had all the Galaxy S models except S6 and I always went for AOSP/Slim versions of roms. Couldnt ever wrap my head around TW and I generally prefer that my phone runs on original android, closer to Vanilla.
2. what's the deal with unlocking BL .. ? I went over some threads but It is a bit overwhelming. I figured that I need to unlock the BL in order to use AOSPs ?
3. Is Sony's customization as annoying as TW .. ? As someone who never uses Sense or TW, Im probably not going to like whatever Sony is using also (xperia UI name .. ? ) ?
4. A friend recommended Pure X ROM, and told me it would be a partial solution for my needs, doenst require BL Unlock.. ?
Waht would you guys recommend for me .. ? should I go all the way and install AOSP or do you think there is a ROM that would suit me ? Thanks to all in advance
1. Sony is quite close to AOSP, its just skinned and has some aditional features
2. Locked bootloader means nothing but signed stock kernel which means you can only run stock roms only
3. Sony is quite respective toward AOSP
(idk what sony call their UI, i think its called Overlay or Omnibalance)
4. Pure X Rom is stock based so you can flash it without bootloader unlock
(i dont recomend any rom, just remove bloat from stock rom( there is a flashable script with instructions in the cross development section.)

1. Yes. TW suuuucks a lot. When I was a Samsung user I also used to have some cyanogenmod based roms running as they were lagfree (in comparison to TW).
2. To use AOSP or anything that requires a kernel change you need to unlock your bootloader. Just follow sony's official instructions (remember that everything will be wiped, even internal storage).
3. Sense is the smoothest one (in my opinion) but Sony UI is also much better than TW. I think that once you get used to stock sony's functions you won't use pure android anymore, as it's missing many things (like hold shutter button on locked screen to launch camera, good camera app, stamina mode, and many many more)
4. I haven't heard about this rom, but as long as it's based on stock sony's firmware it shouldn't require an unlocked bootloader. LB in thread title means it works with locked bootloaders.
So in my opinion, you should try something that is based on Sony firmware. You can even use a stock one or try something more advanced, like existenz.
Sent from Xperia Z2
Luckily not from an iPhone = Yesterdays technology at tomorrows prices
You can always root on locked bootloader and backup DRM keys( which is necessary for camera software, i mean better photos and many more things), then you can unlock bootloader and install an AOSP rom. You can even restore these features by flashing a zip I suppose, on unlocked bootloader.

Some guidance redmi note 3 pro before i commit to buy

Hi Folks,
Been reading alot of different threads and searching the net. I see some of the sellers on e bay have roms with google play store and multi languages pre installled. From what i gather these seem to be a custom rom and not the global rom. (which has me thinking is the bootloader unlocked on these ones?)
Are there any disadvantages to buying these? will the rom get OTA updates( probably not) ? will they contain more bloatware than the stock original rom?
So should I buy stock rom? Then upgrade to the Global rom for the english and to get rid of any chinese stuff on the phone?
If i want to install custom roms, then i gather the best way is to request via the mi link to have bootloader unlocked and flash to the developer ROM.
i have read a few different ways, users maybe bricking phones. So want to ensure I do things right from the start.
Any advice is most welcome.

1.bootloader is not unlocked
2.all phones, which don't come from mi.com have custom roms installed and you will not receive OTA upadtes in future, but you can install original MIUI Global Rom.It don't care if they contain bloatware, you will flash new rom
3.you don't need to buy sotware,it is free from miui forum
4.i don't recommend you to unlock bootloader and to install custom roms;too many people around us cry after this action.Stay with original rom and you will don't have problems
P.S:i suggest you to buy from trustworthy reseller and not from Ebay or untrusted sources, easy you can receive a fake device.
Thanks for the tips, one final question as a lot of the flashing process seems to be all over the place or conflicting information.
If I had a stock version rom and a custom rom , do both require for the boot loader to be unlocked to flash to the global rom? Basically I just want the global rom, that will get updates and just install google services . It's a phone for the wife. Don't want a lot of bother. So in just trying to force a reliable seller and gather whether I need to request to get the boot loader unlocked or not.
There is a way to flash roms with locked bootloader. Just having vendor rom doesn't necessarily mean the bootloader is unlocked.
Vendor ROMs or unofficial MIUI ROM might have malware/bloatware pre-installed. I myself prefer official ROM unless the customized ROM is from well recognized developer.
If you'd like to have global rom, then you should buy the redmi note 3 with qualcomm cpu, aka redmi note 3 pro.

You can install Global Rom even the bootloader is locked(mine is locked);global rom have google services preinstalled, you don't need to install nothing related to Google apps. The phone is very good and speedy and nice. One more timeON'T UNLOCK BOOTLOADER.Think a litlle and ask your self:Why Xioami had to invest more money in extra security?

Questions regarding Unlocked BL, Root and updating

Hi guys,
Although I'm not a totally newbie, I mean I installed Honeycomb on the OG Desire watch out for the volume tho, but I'm totally new to the Huawei thingq, although I've owned a Ascend Mate 7 and a P9+ I never went as far as looking for root and custom ROMs, and I'm specially not educated in the whole architectural changes that treble brings.
So I've a few questions, and hopefully someone can clear some of them for me.
1- Unlocked BL means no OTA right? Also not via Firmware Finder?
2- Running stock, if a new update pops up on the web, I download the .zip and extract everything. I can flash the systems but I'm missing lots of things there, fixes on the kernel, and other stuff. Should I flash them all? Is it recommend? Or are the risks to high? Should I wait for the specific rom to be signed for my IMEI or am I okay as long as I choose the right branding (Europe for me).
3- And having magisk root... Does will it make flashing a new update any complicated?
4 - (and the last), when running a AOSP rom, is it possible/recommend to extract a new stock kernel and flash it when an update is available?
Thanks a lot
