My phone has the I545VRSGPL1 bootloader, and i cannot find any gosh dang way to unlock the bootloader and reinstall a custom bootloader. I have been trying for months now and it still wont work. I've used Odin and heimdall, I've even used flashing apps from google play and other apk downloading sites, but none of it seems to be working.
I cannot afford another phone, and the locked bootloader has put undesirable myriads of stress on my days. if anyone can help, please do so.

Unfortunately the Bootloader for the PL1 Firmware is Locked up and cannot be Unlocked.
There's no way to downgrade the Firmware past the OC1...

OK... I'm gonna look some more, but I need to ask. I was given one of these yesterday with PL1 already on it. I can use Kingroot to get root sort of (titanium can't uninstall any system apps apparently) and I was wondering. Should I just run the debloat ADB script or can I now access the phone using ODIN and flash an already debloated touchwiz ROM? Maybe LineageOS? Or do I just need to find any ROM that says it's OK for OC1 and follow those instructions?

Instead of using kingroot, use wonder share mobile go pro I think it's called to root PL1 instead. You can use flash fire v0.53 to flash touchwiz based ROMs only. Lineage OS is out, as is CM, and AOSP due to the locked bootloader. You can't even install a custom recovery, you're stuck with using flash fire and touchwiz ROMs. There are some debloated touchwiz ROMs, I think stang5litre ROM might be one. Most ROMs for this phone are based on the OC1 and OF1 firmware. To boot them, you need to downgrade or partially downgrade your bootloader to either OC1 or OF1. However, I think you can just flash stang5litre ROM with flash fire and it'll automatically get you to OF1. I just got this phone myself a few months ago, so I'm still trying to figure out this locked bootloader mess.

Unfortunately there's no option for any Android 6 or above for the I545 device with a locked Bootloader.
I've got one that's in the same boat and stuck with Android 5 with the Debloated stock development called the stang5litre.

I'm currently on a Galaxy S3, but I have an S4 coming in on Friday.
I saw a thread for rooting the S4, but do I need to unlock the bootloader like I did in the S3 to install a rom?
Basically, where is the thread that has all the info I need to root, unlock, and install a custom recovery for the S4?
I have one for the S3, but can't find it for the S4.

you cant find thread? How hard did you look? There is a stickie can't be missed in the general section.
BTW, the bootloader is locked for all versions of firmware since mdk.
only option is safetrap.

Okay maybe my understanding on the purpose of unlocking the bootloader is incorrect.
I thought the bootloader has to be unlocked in order to install a custom rom?
On my S3 if the bootloader wasn't unlocked the phone would brick.
Safestrap is a custom recovery so how is that relevant to bootloader? I can't seem to draw the connection.
Thanks!

plenty of threads here to read to educate yourself.
S4 bootloader is locked since mdk firmware. MDK had an exploit that Loki process allowed custom recovery
safestrap uses an exploit to work around it so its the only custom recovery for the locked bootloader.
Each subsequent firmware release locks the bootloader and exploits down further. Anyone taking the next round of kit kat OTA's will likely loose root as well.

More then likely the device you get will come with the new baseband MJ7 or MK2. You need to check this before you start messing with anything. That said the bootloader is locked up tight and you will be very limited with what you can do with it. You can root, and install safestrap(a custom recovery by Hashcode that bypasses the bootloader). This will allow you to install certain touchwiz based roms but you have to be sure they are compatible with safestrap.
Root for 4.3 baseband:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
Safestrap:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2441441
Both these links are in the android devlopment section. It is very difficult with this device because there are multiple root methods and recovery methods depending on baseband version. If by some chance you get the phone and the baseband is MDK, DO NOT UPDATE!!!! This will allow you to install loki'ed recovery and flash any rom you want. Chances are that won"t happen though. Good luck

The difference isn't in the baseband, it's in the bootloader. You can run a newer baseband than your bootloader, for example, especially if you have the MDK bootloader.
Since you're starting from stock, the baseband and the bootloader revisions are the same and can be found from Settings/More/About phone.
Before you flash anything, please read the what you need to know thread in the General section. Also, there's my thread in this forum.
The S4 is more complicated than the S3 largely because Samsung has really locked it down much more effectively than the S3. Consequently, there's lots of ways to go wrong. Reading first can save you a lot of grief.

Is there a noticeable difference? If its the same, why upgrade?
I am coming from a similar situation as you. I cracked my screen on my S3 and Asurion replaced it with an S4, which I received on Monday. I thought that I was going to be able to load SlimKat and pick up where I left off, but no.
The posts that k1mu linked are a great starting point. A few of my thoughts that I came to realize this week. These are my ways of looking at it and may not be totally correct.
The bootloader is locked and there isn't a total unlock (yet). Safestrap allows you to crack the door open a little and reach your arm in to grab a few things.
You will need to stick with ROMs that work with the TouchWiz kernel. The post that k1mu referenced has a link to compatible ROMs. You will not be able to load SlimKat, CM, Carbon, etc. Basically any ROM you choose will have TW underneath. Some of the ROMs will try to look like an ASOP, but it is still a TW base.
Safestrap will allow you to create ROM slots where you can try out the ROM to see if you like it. I am still trying to decide what I want to use. Currently I have Hyperdrive as the leader. Everything that I do continues to work. The Eclipse ROM looks good but it is not quite there yet, but he is working on a build in the next couple days. Here is a link to their website with more up to date status. Eclipse . I also looked at the Foxhound ROM and it is good also. For me support and future upgrades are the most important. I am starting to think that i will embrace TW instead of trying to cover it up and will go with Hyperdrive.
If you use TiBu, read this post, especially with Hyperdrive http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2653044.
The other realization that hit me was that while Safestrap can create partitions for loading different ROMs, each one is restricted to a maximum of a 3GB /data partition. When I tried to restore all of my apps this was quickly used up. It isn't supported by Safestrap to flash to the stock location, but it can and has been done. Since Safestrap isn't doing a flash there are more risks and I think that this should probably be kept to a minimum. This is where you want to test all the candidate ROMs first and then decide which one to use and then flash to the stock location. Obviously this could cause problems with the phone and would use ODIN as a fallback. Unless something get totally hosed and then you are out of a phone.
One thing that I realized a long time ago is that when you change devices you may want to do everything exactly the way it was before. On the phone or even when looking for information. But in most cases it is better to change your processes or work flow to work with the new device than it is to change the device to work in your previous work flow.
Hello,
I am really new to rooting and custom roms. I've looked everywhere and can't seem to find a tutorial on how to root the S4-i545 on NC5. I don't understand custom recovery, and overall I'm just a really bad noob at this. Could I be linked to an informative tutorial to help me better understand things? Also, if there is a tutorial on how to root the i545 on NC5 that would be fantastic.
I'm really stuck and I've been researching for the past few days and still haven't come across anything helpful..
Thanks!

rooting and custom roms loading are not for the faint of heart. Going to NC5 is fairly complex process and requires alot of patience and alot knowledge concerning odin process as using odin is key part of the inst all of downgrading. I take it your phone is already NC5 and you took the OTA?

Read the following: from Surge1223.
That will allow you to downgrade to 4.3, root it, then eventually upgrade to 4.4 while retaining root.
You do NOT want to downgrade to 4.3 if you've installed 4.4. The kernel modules for 4.3 won't work unless you run bypasslkm at every boot, which appears to be a challenge for a number of people. Once you've started the NC5 upgrade, you really want to be on 4.4.
If you're still on 4.3 (MK2) and want to upgrade to NC5, I'd recommend using this. It's a lot easier to do, but it only applies if your MK2 system is basically factory stock but rooted (or if you can get it back to stock.)
I've gotten my answer on downgrading, could someone please explain to me what recovery is?

There's three ways you can boot your android device.
First is normal mode. That's the way it nomally boots, running the full operating system.
The second is downloader mode. This mode allows you to flash new software images using ODIN.
The third is recovery mode. Factory recovery allows you to flash updates, wipe the stock ROM, factory reset, etc. A custom recovery allows you to flash arbitrary updates (those which aren't signed by Samsung).
Phones running MDK bootloader can have a custom recovery that allows you to flash nonstandard ROMs.
Past MDK, this requires the use of Safestrap recovery.
Quick question - where would I put necessary files on my SD card? Under which directory?

Forgive me if this is the wrong place to ask, but I just updated my Verizon GS4 to 5.0.1 using the OTA updates and I can boot into both the recovery and download modes. If i can boot into these what's stopping me from just flashing a new ROM in the download mode (it explicitly says this mode is used to install a custom OS) or applying an update from my external storage in the recovery mode?
Thanks!

You can go ahead and do that but you will probably brick your phone. Steps to flashing a custom OS is usually, root your phone and then unlocking the bootloader. After unlocking then you can install a custom recovery image. From the recovery you can flash custom OS and kernels. I believe the custom OS you are talking about is for an OS that is straight from Verizon. I wouldn't dare flash any ROM from Cyanogen, or Liquid or ASOP etc through the built in recovery of the phone. That's why you install a custom recovery from TWRP or Clockwork. It's your phone so you go ahead and do what you like, if it does work, well hell, let me know. Good luck.

Root
I tried to root after I installed lollipop OTA. Root checker said I wasn't rooted. It's then I found out I made a big mistake. After
a charge up the other night I turned my phone back on & noticed the lock symbol in the screen showed the unlocked lock.
Now my question is ....... is my phone unlocked , or is it just there is no bootloader that can gain access to the system?
All help with this is welcome!
Now that I think about it I realize what's happening. The phone unlocked the boot loader won't give me access to the system.
Boy it feels like I'm at the gate but can't get in.

Your bootloader isn't unlocked. There's not even a root method for this OC1 OTA. Samsung and Verizon have locked the bootloader permanently since 4.3 Jelly Bean. No bootloader has been unlocked since. None! There's a whole lot more technicalities to unlocking the bootloader than simply rooting. Chances are u may have tripped your KNOX counter, meaning your warranty is void. And it's irreversible.
So...VRUGOC1 OTA Update = NO CUSTOM ROM, RECOVERY, UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER, ROOT, OR DOWNGRADE.

OK Let me backup. I guess I typed this improperly without thinking.
I realize that this is a very technical process to unlock phones . I also realize that there is not a method @ THIS TIME to gain root access to th S4.
Let me start over.
Before I received the OTA update I had tried Towel Root with no success. Then after I got th OTA I tried Odin without success. Now I did not know at the time time there wasn't an available method to root. Shortly after research I found out.
I have read root is not the problem but the is no way to unlock the bootloader. I just noticed the unlock symbol & had to question it.
I could give a damn if my warranty is void .I have 1 rooted phone. My be the other some time down the road ?

THERE IS NO CUSTOM RECOVERY FOR VERSION'S GALAXY S4 PERIOD
the only thing you can do is root and install safe-strap
then your options for roms are as follows
1: kitpop 1.3 <Which is the only ASOP Rom
2: or Hyperdrive Rls20
Those two are your ONLY Options
if you took the OTA you will be unable to downgrade to NC5 which is the only possible candidate for getting custom kernels to boot which hasn't happened yet

Soo................................ Yea My s4 is rooted & the bootloader is unlocked ......................Yea.
I'm curious now that I have root on OF1 can I use flashfire to install a custom rom? I looked into it and flashfire says samsung write protection. Not sure if I should try to flash CM12.1 or not? I dont want to softbrick my device. I am still looking for a guide on using flashfire with the s4 verizon. Very lil info is available.
My other option is safestrap, but it appears from my below research & attempt the current 3.75 A03 version does not work for OF1. So without custom recovery there is no chance for CM12
See: http://www.themobimag.com/how-to-ins...ung-galaxy-s4/
update this almost works-> http://galaxys4root.com/galaxy-s4-ro...are-safestrap/
It does not work because of safestrap see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...8#post56030788
v 3.75 A03 wont work for us because safestrap can not load recovery once installed. Without safestrap we are stuck with touchwiz only roms. I am hoping either safestrap gets another update or we find another method to install custom recovery.
If anyone has any input or ideas please let me know. I have googles the hell out of this to get as far as I have.
Dont try to flash cm12, it won't work

Matt.. Will it just not flash or result in a softbrick? What can I flash with flashfire or odin now that I have root? A friend has a 1+1 and I love the CM12 features so really want to get CM12 on my S4. I am completely willing to be a gini pig cuz my phone has nothing on it. I just dont want to get stuck with no options to flash, bricked. I do know how to use odin to recover from a soft brick though.

CM requires a custom recovery, which requires an unlocked bootloader which you will not have unless you are on MDK. It probably would result in a hard brick rather than a soft brick

Unfortunately that requires a custom recovery as well...so no it would not work.

Flashfire has actually been around for a year now, I used it a while back to update to NK4 and keep root. The roms I know of are stang5litre's and Albe96's, but I don't know if it works on OF1 or not as Ijust flashed it recently and hardbricked
Do NOT flash stang's OC1 rom on OF1
Just flashed Stang's OC1 rom on my freshly rooted OF1 S4, followed all the steps correctly and I guess it hard bricked my phone? How is that even possible?

Damn; I have not been able to find a thread talking about this and of course I dont wanna brick mine.. So are these the only safe roms?
Stangs, albe s6 port, or stock deodex seem to be it. Are there any more?
Thanks

If I were you I would wait to see if anyone else could flash a ROM successfully on OF1 before taking a chance

Sounds like @Matthew M. hard bricked his phone when he flashed "Albe95's S6 Rom Port" and @fischer12345 hard bricked their phone when they flashed @stang5litre's "stang5litre 5.0 edition" rom, so it sounds like NEITHER of those will work for folks on the OF1 bootloader.
I successfully flashed @muniz_ri's "I545_OF1_Stock_Rooted_Deodexed_ROM" earlier today (from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-to-update-to-i545of1-5-0-1-keeproot-t3182544 ) and I installed @arter97's Xposed (version: xposed-v75-sdk21-arm-arter97-snapdragon_requestConcurrentGC.zip; from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/unofficial-xposed-samsung-lollipop-t3113463 NOTE: you have to use the "requestConcurrentGC.zip" version, regular version wouldn't flash). Both of those can be flashed with v.24 of @Chainfire's FlashFire Beta (from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/paid-software/flashfire-t3075433 ).
For now, I'd recommend flashing that rom, xposed, then using the Xposed installer to install @wanam's Wanam Xposed Lollipop (forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61142980&postcount=5296 ). There are SO MANY options to customize your device with just those three installs that you should be busy for awhile.
Maybe others can post other mod's that they've flashed/installed here as well?

I read through the comments about people talking about OF1 roms. I thought since I was still on 5.0.1 that it was okay to flash it through FF. I followed these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon/development/stang5litre-ediition-5-0-t3132555, triple checked everything and flashed the files. When I was back on OC1 (non-MDK using FF), I did use the rom and it worked perfectly. However, I knew it was for OC1 but thought the rom was still compatible for OF1. When the phone prompted to reboot, I saw the blue led light flashing, but a black screen. When i attempted to get into download mode, the light stopped blinking and it was dead. And I was like, how in the world did this rom hard brick my phone? It's not like I flashed an international rom to my phone. Any thoughts?

Yeah, I will edit this post in 2 days when the JIG arrives from amazon
The JIG did not work for me, not suprising since flashfire flashed a recovery.img when i did the install. Ill just have it JTAG'd

That was the wrong set of instructions man if you look at the top it says before OC1 base. You flashed the update zip which caused your issues. You should have looked at the OC1 instructions for FF right underneath it. But I don't know if that will work either but I know it won't brick your device . @klabit87 is working on a fix. Hold please

Need a rooted of1 user that is willing to make a back up in terminal so @klabit87 can make the fix to try. If your willing to help let me know please
the same goes for the albe rom.
No of1 instructions were posted the oc1 instructions flashed the oc1 firmware which bricked it.
If you hadn't flashed that you would have been ok.
I am very sure the rom would have booted fine if it hadn't been for the firmware zip.
the firmware zip updates the recovery.img so that's why you are not able to get into download mode either.
A buddy of mine gave me a broken Verizon galaxy s4. I got it fixed and checked the bootloader, which is GPL1. Can this build be rooted at all? If so, is there a one click method or do I need ODIN to gain root? I searched around here and couldn't find anything. I'm used to rooting older phones that were exploitable with towel root.

Please excuse my ignorance if I'm wrong but, based on your question, it looks like you're confusing Rooting with Unlocking.
The PL1 Cannot be Unlocked but, Can be Rooted.
The Guides, Tutorials, etc... for Rooting the OC1/OF1 should also work for the PL1 as well.
Good Luck!

Okay thanks. I have been reading more and it seems king root can root the GPL1 firmware.

KingRoot is an option that works for many individuals but...
"I do not like KingRoot in Sam..., I do not like it in Sam I Am."
LMAO! (wasn't that clever!)
I have the Wondershare MobileGO PC Software that does a great job on my S4 PL1. That software will root, install SuperSU afterwards and then I just go with Stang5litre's Debloated ROM for the S4 locked bootloader devices.
This is just one option that some like and some don't...
I wish you the best of luck!

Oooo, "debloated"... I like the sound of that! Factory software storage creep is eating my S4 alive .
