Hey guys,
I'm ready to pull the trigger on a phone but worried about software updates, I just checked and the z which came out just a year ago is still only on android 4.3 where as the one is on 4.4.2 and will be getting 4.4.3. This is currently the dilemma I face between the one m8 and the z2. I prefer the z2 in various ways as well as the m8 in various ways but the deal breaker for me will be software updates and htc seems really committed to provide quick updates. Can anyone comment on this?
Personally, I don't care much about the Android version updates. The Xperia Z works extremely well under 4.3 and there's actually no real need to update to 4.4.2, in my view. I have the Xperia Z1 as well, and recently updated to 4.4.2 but it actually worked well under 4.3 and I don't really see that significant an improvement after the update to KitKat. I would be more concerned with the updates that fix bugs (but still under same Android version) as these would improve overall performance and squash issues.
Notwithstanding the above, Sony do tend to roll out the latest Android version to the latest devices first (e.g. Xperia Z1 before Xperia Z). But they do commit themselves to doing so for devices that are less than 2 years old. For example, KitKat is planned to rollout to Xperia Z this month.
till about end of 2012, Sony has been poor at updating their flagships...
but the last two flagships have received good regular updates...
this is Xperia Z (H1 2013):
http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/software/phones/xperia-z/
this is Xperia Z1 (H2 2013):
http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/software/phones/xperia-z1
so almost every quarter they update the Flagship to the newest available Android OS
Just received an update for the Sony account management, which boldly States lollipop support.
Sadly that doesn't mean much, as the account management app is not device specific.
Aside from the GPe Z Ultra, the Z3 will get Lollipop then the Z2, and the Z1 before we get a look. Which is kind of sad seeing that with the GPe, they have a working 5.0 ROM ready to be skinned.
And then there's Google's mega bug fixing 5.1 release around the corner, which I would hope that Sony would hold on a little more and give us that instead of risking a multitude of complaints arising from the current version of Lollipop, not Sony's implementation of it.
hey there,
I was just wondering if *anyone* has revieved the android 6 update for his Z5 compact.
As far as I see, according to the usual tech websites, it should be available by now but I'm still getting no update prompt.
cheers

No
Only the Z3 and the Z3C have Android 6 beta (Marshmallow Concept) at the moment.
Sony is taking lot of time to release 6.0. I hope they:
- improve the camera firmware for the Z5 camera
- fix auto brightness bug with the colors (already announced)
- implement fingerprint sensor using standard Android APIs and not custom Sony stuff.

To the things you mentioned above, they got many bugs to fix across the board. Let alone the kernel contains many bugs.
Plus, the kernel's CPU power management changed if they updated the kernel to a newer CAF branch (which i suppose they did),
and it takes time for them to refactor hotplug etc.. to the updated scheduler (very likely there will be more than 1 A57 online in 6.0+)
and correctly setup stuff.
It's better they take their time and release a relativly stable firmware >>upgrade, and not a rushed firmware which ends up being worse than Lollipop.
I agree with you Tommy but I think they should have developed a Concept for the Z5 too.
The Z5 Lollipop firmware have some terrible bugs like the auto brightness bug. That should have been fixed a few months ago.
I honestly think that without a proper concept firmware we are going to have a buggy 6.X just like the current 5.1.1
I appreciate all the other info you mentioned from CAF by the way.

ok, we'll wait then I guess
Not yet.
Time is not a matter. I hope they release a great working update next time
Xperiablog reported that it seems the Marshmallow update for the Z4 Tablet is being delayed, so I find it quite likely that the one for the Z5 phones is delayed as well. I would be surprised if it arrives before the middle of February.

Unconfirmed news said Z5 line 6.0 ready now and preparing to roll OTA. I think after Z3/Z3 concept ended, we will get the 6.0 at the end of this month or early next month. Hope this is true.

I think he refer to this news. "Good news coming from Turkey, namely the Facebook profile of the company. It appears to have begun the roll out of Android 6.0 Marshmallow to the range Z5 . At the moment there seems to be a bit ‘of traffic on servers but the OTA was sent and is therefore only a matter of hours or at most a few days."
Unfortunately, we can't confirm whether or not it is true or fake. It's very unlikely Turchey will get it first. Turchey is the country who used F-16 to shoot down Russia SU-25 last year.
I am from Turkey and unfortunately there is no any OTA MM update yet.
It was March last year when the z3c got the lollipop update. I'll say same for z5 line and MM. Sony is officially terrible with updates.

You hit the nail on the head. The existing camera firmware and the poor fingerprint sensor recognition are my two major disappointments with my Z5C. Will be great if they can fix them.

When the Z3/Z3c Marshmallow beta concept going to end, we'll know 6.0 is real coming. The same as Galaxy S6.
It has been forever that sony updates are really late. Ive actually given up on waiting. It will come when it comes

Same here HAHAHAHAH thats the best thing to do
We've also waited for LLP and after months of struggle, Sony released it full of bugs... so they are not really taking the time to release a bug free software....they are just taking the time ^_^. Hope i'm wrong with this one.

Well...they only did a Concept for the Z3. So I'm expecting a buggy Z5 Marshmallow firmware and a more polished Z3 firm....
I hope I'm wrong.

Hey guys. I'm coming from a Nexus 6p. I wanted a small phone and this looks like it. I know the z5c won't be getting n for a while officially, but based on your guys experience, will there be a decent stock ROM available around the time of Android N's release? Was this the case when Google released marshmallow?
Thanks guys.
HTC is usually one of the first to announce support of the latest Android release once a new one is formally available. They strive for 90 days historically, but delays come in for carrier based versions of their phones.
Sony seems to typically fall into a 4-6 month window after major Android versions are released, so early spring 2017 is when I'd guess N will show up on our Z5C's.
We should let SONY know that the current Android 9 Pie is the worst lazy treatment since the SONY upgrade system.
Xperia XZ3,Xperia XZ2, XZ2 Premium, XZ2 Compact, Xperia XZ Premium, XZ1 and XZ1 Compact, XA2, XA2 Ultra and XA2 Plus, which can be upgraded to Android 9 Pie, should be displayed to tell SONY about the Android 9 Pie experience.
For details, please go to the Xperia Support Forum.
XPERIA XZ3 Discussion - Article title: SONY Bad Android 9 Pie
Let the user wait for a long time, Pie is finally updated.
The update found that it is very different from the Android 9 Pie we know.
SONY's Android 9 Pie seems to be android oreo 8.1 experience
We lack many important features
No New-System-Navigation & Digital Wellbeing & Slice & actions
There is no change in the Setting UI.
Perhaps SONY developers should refer to what is Android 9 Pie
This is just a waste of time for the XPERIA XZ2 participating in the Android 9 Pie test.
Other complaints
1.Always on display Why not do a unified drop to all Android 9 models only XZ2 series
2.No. There is still no port Systemui with new clock (XZ Premium, XZ1, XZ1 Compact)
3.GOOGLE active marketing developers should have a dark theme
The dark theme that our sony music APP and Sony Album APP already have.
But should the apps used by Sony Phone, Sony Contacts, and Sony Mobile SupportXperia keyboards also include the dark theme option?
I don't want the "new" navigation that is in Google's launcher. It looks awful and less usable than the "old" one.
Auto super slow-mo
All I wanted from this dumb update was AUTO SUPER SLOW-MO...nope.
It's xmas so a little gift like an S9 would do me good right now
This update has has been terrible, for the sake of simplicity sony is just doing nothing and calling it stock experience. This is the laziest iteration of an update and it hasnt even come to canda yet. 2 months of update and nothing yet here in canada.
The phone seems slower than that of oreo, the phone heats up more than ususal even when doing simple things like browsing and listeniung to music. The camera application is slower, touch is sometimes unresponsive. This update is very buggy in my opinion and sony f******up big time. All samsung fans will be treated to something new and all sony fans have been using the same **** ui from xperia z1 with minor changes
OP, you're an idiot. Android 9 (or any other major update) isn't about a new UI. It's the technology in the background that makes it worthwhile.

what do you mean by auto super slow-mo ?
Does anyone have wifi issues with android 9? I use to have to reboot my phone at some point because it won't take any wifi communication any more (on oreo)

No, change in UI for an update is stupid in a consumer sense.
I am sure 90% of the users will find it confusing, one day when you wake up, the whole UI has changed and you have to learn again. If I were a developer, I would hold the UI until I release a new phone. However, I think they should have include an option to enable the new navigation though, as well as the dark theme.
Overall, I like the new pie update. Its smooth and responsive.

How many have this update installed?
My gf got the update on her phone and wifi is really acting up.
It seems like when connecting it works for a few seconds, speedy like it should be and suddenly the wifi connection speed is down to 2mb no matter how close to the ap the phone is, and I'm running Cisco AP's so the network is not the issue.
I REALLY hope someone has some clue how to perhaps fix this without rooting the phone.
I have my own rooted and still on oreo and it seems that I will stick with oreo for now on my phone.
For me its very important, battery drain its really great, on oreo battery drain fast, new system ui looks very good, settings has been changed in many sections, and super slowmo in full hd..

I think what the OP is saying is the lack of Elegance in the UI. Looks blocky and almost like Android 6.1. They could at least implemented the rounded edges in the notification shade. Little things like that go a long way.
Does it drain battery lesser than it used to in 8.1? Is it worth upgrading?
