There seems to be a debate on this topic as to whether you should do a FULL drain on your battery and I wanted to know what people's thoughts were on this in this forum.
I've used my phone twice now to the point where it has auto powered down on it's own. I will then hit the 'Power' button to ensure that battery is truly at 0% (the capacitative buttons blink for a second to confirm that I've hit the power button but there is no more juice left to turn the phone on).
I will plug into the wall charger and allow it to charge for 4 hours (usually around 4 hours, I'll check back to see and hit the power button and the onscreen battery display will show 100% charged).
I will unplug my phone, power on and keep using until the phone fully drains and powers off on it's own again before repeating this cycle.
However, others have stated that this is NOT necessary for Lithium Ion battery and can actually damage the circuitry of the battery? I've always been under the impression that you need to do a complete & full battery drain for lithium ion batteries at least 3 -5 full cycles/times before the battery has been conditioned/optimized for capacity.
Maybe I'm wrong...after all I'm coming from a G1 and this practice helped my atrocious battery life on that dinosaur!
If this is wrong, when should I be plugging my phone back in to charge? When it gives me the first warning to charge in (battery level turns orange - I assume this about 20% battery left) or on the "critical" battery warning when the battery icon in the notification panel turns red (assuming this is about 10% battery left)?
from what I've read in the past, letting your phone drain completely down until it shuts itself off is not good for the battery. I could be wrong but thats what I've read

Yeah, I've heard both sides and I've conditioned my battery for the G1 because it seemed to drain faster if I plugged it into charge when there was 30% or so still left.
Well, I've done two complete cycles so I guess I'll just try recharging when it hits the red mark next time.
When you plug in to charge? Orange, red or whenever to top off?
i plug my phone in when i go to bed. I dont care what the battery is at. I also charge it while i'm at work so when I leave, its around 90-100%. My battery rarely reaches red.

LOL - that would prematurely killed my battery capacity on the G1! I went thru two batteries before I started draining all the way down. Made a difference between 4-6 hours and 6-10 hours.
Seems like this phone doesn't need to do that tho.
But what're you getting on average for battery life and display on time then?

I do the exact same thing. First with my Captivate and now with the SGS2 and the battery life on my captivate held pretty much exactly the same charge for the entire 15 months I used it. The battery on this SGS2 seems to last about 150-175% of the Captivate battery under the same conditions. I just came back from a week on the road where I spent 9-12 hours a day away from a charger and was using my phone constantly all day long and would get back to the hotel room with 30-40% battery left. Considering I was listening to music, playing plants vs zombies and sending and reading push email constantly throughout the day I am very satisfied with the battery life on this phone. I've never done any kind of conditioning or special battery maintenance.

i stopped looking at my battery stats a long time ago. I'll peak in there once in a while but I dont really care what the stats show because I'm always around a charger. As long as I get through 12 hours or so without charging, i'm happy.
Some devices need a full drain cycle to properly calibrate the fuel gauge - ours does NOT.
Lithium ion batteries don't like deep discharging - in fact discharging them too much will permanently damage them (fortunately, all batteries sold to end users have built-in protection chips to prevent overdischarge - but do you REALLY want to rely on that chip?)
Similarly, they don't like charge being forced into them - so don't "bump charge". (Bump charging is removing and immediately reinserting the charger when the phone says charging is complete.)
For long-term storage, store them at around 50% capacity if not being used. LiIons that are stored at 100% charge lose capacity MUCH faster than ones stored at 50%.
A Li-Ion that has been sitting for a long time (months...) will develop a passivation layer that can be detrimental to performance - a few charge/discharge cycles will fix this. You don't need to do a full discharge/recharge - probably even from 90 to 70 and back up a few times should be fine.

what about short charging during the course of the day? For instance, while I'm at work, I like to plug it in for a bit and then use it off the charger. Then before I leave, I charge it again for a bit. Do you think thats okay to charge the phone for short ~1 hour bursts?
No, the battery itself doesn't do well with deep discharges, but every device with one has circuitry to manage this and keep it from happening. The phone will shut off before the battery reaches a critically low discharge state. Just as it will cease charging before it blows up. Just because the phone shuts off does not mean that the battery is too low.
Assuming the phone has the proper cutoffs, it's not really any different to do two discharges to 50% or one to 100%. There have been studies that say leaving it on a charger is bad, doing two 50% cycles is worse than one 100%, etc. I've always just trusted that the phone manufacturers design the battery monitor and control circuits correctly and not worry much about it. And I've never had to replace a battery yet and always get acceptable life.
It's lithium ion, not nickel cadmium.
Full drains are bad for lithium ion.

lithium ion batteries dont like being under 30%. and they also dont do well if they are kept at 80 percent or above all the time. for longest battery life don't just let it sit on the charger all day after it fully charges.

Also, batteries take charging current better (less wear) at lower states of charge. That's why I put a variable-current charging algorithm into my Infuse kernels (charginghacks branch on github)
800 mA at low voltages (200 above stock), dropping to 550 near the end (50 below stock).
Unfortunately, charginghacks is likely not going to be possible with our hardware. One of the differences between the I9100 and I777 is a different battery charger circuit - ours is far less flexible.

This phone actually charges with the screen on though, so it's not like the Infuse where the battery would drain with the screen on and the phone charging.

Infuse would charge with the screen on - but not if the screen was on AND the CPU was cranking.
(worst-case was navigation at full brightness - and I've seen reports that the I9100 also has the same problem.)

When web browsing, playing a game, or other general use late at night I'd plug the Infuse into the charger. It would still drain. Doing the same on the SGS II and it at the very least maintains it's battery level, so it's a drastic improvement over the Infuse.
I'm having this problem with my i777.
Sometimes when I reboot the phone the battery charge drops enormously, like 30% or so. For example, I will be doing things with the phone, the charge will be at something like 60% then reboot and right after reboot it says charge is 30% which doesn't make much sense.
this happens with the stock battery but the effects seems to be more pronouced with some batteries I bought on ebay.
Anyone has any idea what's going on?

Normal behavior of our fuel gauge hardware - high load (boot process) immediately after a reset confuses it and makes it report low. Effect is much more pronounced at lower states of charge.

That's exactly right. Tends to happen more on lower states of charge.
Does this mean that the charge indicator will go up after the reboot? Or maybe it will take longer to drop and the effective battery life will be the same.
Yes when this happens to me my bettery either dies extremely slow or my percent just goes up..

I see this too. I will be at ~40%, reboot and see 10%. Come back after a while to 12%, and it stays on 12% with like an hours worth of heavy use before going lower. If I look at the battery usage, it trends down, then drops, but stays level, then about when the trend would have been it starts dropping again.
I thought I just needed to calibrate the battery, as I just flashed a new ROM. But, it keeps doing this after a week, and several charge cycles.
Guess I'm relieved to see this weird behavior is not indicative of a problem.

Correct - because the gauge thinks the battery is lower than it actually is when this happens.
Attached a screenshot of the battery use with the big drop in effect.
I particularly think this is a bug and Samsung should fix this behavior.
It can't be changed without hardware alterations.
As with anything in engineering, there are tradeoffs. The positive aspect of this fuel gauge design is that it does not require ANY calibration. No wiping battery stats, no "always flash firmware at 100%" - none of that.
The negative is that in a few corner cases, it gets thrown off temporarily. This is basically the only known one.
Ive noticed this as well with both Stock and ICScreweD. I just try to reboot as least as possible.

If you reboot at higher states of charge, OR reboot when on external power, you should not see this issue.
I just had this same problem lol. I was at 42% and when I rebooted my phone it dropped to 23%....This was a few hours after the OTA update to 2.3.6.
I had the same problem also.
-Battery would not charge to 100% ( it would charge between 97% -98%)
-Battery would drop 20% or 30% percent (when reboot).
I tried to recharge many times and cycles the battey but nothing would work.
I tried changing kernal, modem and roms . Nothing would work.
I actually thought i messed my phone up.
So i tried something that work for me.
1) i would let the battery drain till it was completely dead!
2) I would take battery out for 5 minutes.
3) put battery in and charge with phone OFF till it reaches 100%.
4) unplug charger from phone and take battery out and wait 5 minutes.
5) put battery back in and plug charger up and wait till phone marks 100% again ( This time the wait was longer to get to 100%).
6) i repeated step 5 untill finally the phone would mark 100% faster
7) unplug phone and then wait to see the battery status ( if your phone mark 99%) plug charger to phone and let it charge till it reaches 100% again. once it reach 100% reboot and repeat step 7 untill you reboot and it would show 100%.
not sure if this might work for anyone else but it did work for me. battery would charge to 100% and i don't have my phone drop 20-30 percent after reboot.
If it drops 20-30% on a reboot when the battery is near full, you may have a defective battery.
I've only seen major drops on reboot when the battery is low to begin with, never when at higher states of charge.
Doing a full discharge on Li-ion batteries puts a huge stress on it and greatly decreases the life of the battery. To get the longest life out of a battery, you want to generally stay in the medium range of charge (Don't over charge it, and don't discharge it too much). Cars like the Chevy Volt employ these techniques to encourage a longer battery life, however with phones, you get users that think discharging the battery all the way solves problems. If you want to see the true battery life that the fuel gauge averages from, press *#0228# in your dialer and check the battery voltage. Full is around 4.1v and discharged I believe is around 3.5v or so. (maybe 3.3? not sure)
3) put battery in and charge with phone OFF till it reaches 100%. <-- is probably what fixed it, and why I switch batteries instead of charging on my phone because the charger is able to control the current and voltage better than with a slight load on it (with phone on)
I'm sure that that user cut off at least 5% of his overall battery life with overcharging it like that though...
Same issues here pending the ROM I'm using.
4.2 volts is the upper limit for li-ion - and actually, it hits that at around 95% charge.
The method for charging Li-Ion:
Charge with a current limit initially - on our devices this is 650 mA.
Once you hit 4.2 volts, do NOT go above this - maintain voltage at 4.2 volts or lower regardless of current
Once current drops to around C/10 (on our devices, this is about 160 mA), shut off charging completely.
The phone's charge controller does this all automatically for you.
There's usually a timer/averaging filters in the final stages of charge termination - which is why "bump charging" can push a little extra into the battery - but this will lead to degradation in battery total capacity.
As somewhat of an extra trivia on Li-ion batteries, Motorola has apparently managed to get batteries that have nominal voltage at 3.8v and max charged voltage is around 4.3v as opposed to 4.2v.

Hi everyone i have been using wifi 5.0 about 3 months now it satisfied me enough and i am sure will continue. But the only issue which makes me unhappy is when i am gaming or using gps battery finishes rapidly. I would like to learn when to charge the device is 25% ok and when i am using it on charge even when its full is it bad for the battery life?
Yes you should unplug it when it gets full.

don't leave it on the charger longer then 20-30 minutes after it reaches 100%, any longer can be damaging to the battery if done repeatedly.
Wish these chargers were more like the motorola ecomoto chargers that cut off charging automaticaly once the battery hits capacity.

Thank you for your answer but every time i am charging it over nights i am always turning it off and go to sleep what i want to say i cant wait to be 100% then sleep is there any app to stop charging when its fully done. And isnt it ok while gaming o keep the charger cuz u know after playing 1 hour of fifa12 battery nearly going dead? thanks again.

stopping charging has to be done within the charger itself, so no there is no app that can stop it, plus apps couldn't do anything when the device is powered down anyway.
An hour of a game kills your battery? I can play atleast an hour probably closer to 2 of angry birds and thats from less then 30% and i'm on the 4.0 player which has a much smaller battery, sounds like you've got some battery drain issues to work thru.

yeah u are right about apps no way any app to work when the device off.
I mean maybe 1h and 20 min. with 50% brightness on and i guess fifa use more data than angry birds when ur playing.
anyway its important to know that i shouldn't keep charger on when its 100% because usually when i am home i was using it like that thanks again.
do u think the app called 'sense analog' may make the battery life shorter.
Something is definately wrong, because I can play MC3, which is even more intensive the FIFA on my Gplayer 4.0 for more than 1.5 hours and still have some life left, and the Gplayer 4.0 is only rated for 4/5 hrs and yours is rated for over eight!
After a full recharge, while still plugged in download battery calibration from the market, and follow it's instructions, after you do, while STILL plugged in, reboot. After a full reboot, unplug it, and DO NOT REBOOT until your gplayer completely dies (forces shutdown). Once that occurs, plug it in, let it charge to 100% (while on), leave at 100% for about 15 minutes, unplug, and use as normal. That should fix your issue, unless your battery is dying, which should not occur, even if you are abusing it badly, for awhile longer.

haven't seen the 5.0 screen in person but if the brightness levels are anything like the 4.0 why do you have it so high? My brightness is at like 15-20% with autobrightness OFF.
First, like many others already said, it sounds like something is wrong with your battery. I'm on a 4.0 and playing two hours of a really intense 3D game with auto-brightness indoors will bring the battery from 100% to 50% (maybe it even uses less battery).
Second, as to how to conserve battery life, Rule #1 (as others have said): definetely do not keep it plugged it at 100% for too long. Then, something I tried on my iPod and have been using ever since: keep the battery between 50% and 100%, and once a month, completely empty the battery (until it shuts down) and after that charge it to 100% (this is called a charge cycle). As to my iPod's battery, before I was using this, the battery life got shorter and shorter, but after, it didn't shorten noticeably anymore. On the computer I'm writing this on, for a couple of months, I barely followed this plan, and I lost about 5% of my battery capacity (I have a battery widget that tells me what the total capacity is) within one or two months, but then I started following it a little more closely, and actually got some of it back. Over six months later now, I have lost about 10% of my battery capacity (from the original capacity), except that I should do a charge cycle in the next couple of days, and the last time I did a charge cycle, I got about 5% of the original capacity back, not to mention I have broken rule #1 probably too often and for way too long, often for several hours
My 5.0 can play games for hours before it dies but it has strange batery levels..From 100% to 75% it goes very fast.around 40 minutes when you play game..and then on 75% it stays there for 2hours when you play game and with regular use it can stay all day on 75-70% ..after that it fastly drops to 25% and just when you thing you need to recharge it can stay on 25% forever..you can play 2 more hours of game on 25% or with lighy use it will stay all day on 25%.

This is not correct. NO modern device has ANY smarts in the external charger - nearly all current phones (and every smartphone on the market for the past 3-4 years) has a constant voltage 5.0 volt USB input. Modern "chargers" are not chargers at all - they are dumb 5 volt power supplies, nothing more.
Charging "smarts" are handled by electronics in the device itself and have been for ages. (For all practical purposes, the Player 5.0 is a Galaxy S smartphone minus the cell radio...)
The kernel and charger hardware automatically handle charge termination and restart themselves. This is, for example, why Daily Driver can charge at higher current levels than stock at low battery (but drop the current as the battery reaches nearly full in order to stress the battery less).
Oh, as far as battery percentage display - the method used for estimating state of charge on the Players is abysmally primitive and highly inaccurate.
Battery Charging YP-G70
I always charge my completely standard YP-G70 overnight. As I understand it, the charger only provides voltage and in this case it's 5vdc. The device's battery management software draws the required current to charge the battery. If you install 3c's "Battery Monitor Widget Pro" you can see a charging graph showing the current levels drawn over the full period of charging. The charging current is stepped to control battery temperature and is reduced as the battery approaches full charge. By the time the battery reaches full charge the current draw is down to a trickle charge and will not overcook the battery. I usually leave the device switched on, which further protects it by maintaining a small load. One of the problems I have found with this device is that this charging regime, along with the fairly large capacity of the battery, mean that the battery can take up to six hours to fully charge, which confirms, in my view, that overnight charging is OK.

First of all thank you for this valuable information, thus I can keep my device on plug while i am driving and using gps otherwise on long distance its annoying to keep checking the battery while driving with gps app on.
Other think is i guess its normal but just to ask, The device becomes really hot on charging while i am gaming. What do u think?
Is there an app that takes time of your battery like today I turned on at lets say 7:00am and the battery dies at 9:00 and you forget the times but the app says how long it lasted. Is there some app like that?

3c's "Battery Monitor Widget Pro" gives all the battery information you could ever need. A data log and graphs allow performance to be analysed over any period of time. You can set markers to indicate charger plugging and unplugging times. Hope this helps.

Off course it will be hot..you play game which hots cpy and gpy and at same time you recharge batery which hots battery..but if battery reach 50 degrese celsius player automaticly stop recharging no matter whow much battery is full.

Gaming = CPU and GPU cranking at full tilt with the display on - of course it's going to get warm.
I love my Mega. It is by far the best phone Ive ever had. But, the problems I have with the power usage and management on the device are a total nightmare.
1) The discharging nightmare:
The battery lasts NOTHING. Basically I get about 5 hours of use.. maximum.. no matter what I do.. and I have slimmed down to the ROM to having that NOTHING active.. I literally am left with active 6 services and I monitor CPU usage that is always near zero with NO apps hogging resources. From what I monitor on the device's battery usage, it's clearly always about 90% from the display! And yes, I dim the screen as much as I can of course, but usually not below 1/2way.. I hate screens too dim. However even just on standby with the screen off I still lose about 5% to 8% of battery an hour. Worse, even with the device Powered OFF, I still lose about 20% of battery a day. The ONLY way I have found out to control battery drain completely, is to take the battery out. That's it. Anyone else with similar symptoms and a fix or, is just that the stock battery totally sucks??? Also, any other off brand batteries are any better?.. (not the fat ones rated at much higher amps but that have an extra bulge.. that I don’t want)..
2) The charging nightmare:
This to me is the worse problem. It is bad enough how quickly this device issues battery, bit not nearly as bad as trying to charge efficiently again. I now have tried 3 different chargers/brands (and cables) to try fix the charging problem that is, it takes HOURS and HOURS to charge the battery. I am talking 5 to 6 hours to get it charged and if the screen is on and Im using the device it actually charges NOTHING at all and still keeps discharging (albeit much slower of course)... the fact is that the charging process is so pathetically slow that is less than real-time which means, with the device connected to power supply, the battery STILL drains if I try use it. This is absurd. However, mysteriously enough I have found ONE way that charges the phone super fast.. using a SONY External Power Pack (model CP-F1L) rated at 2200mAh. This is seems crazy because the power output of an external power pack should be much lower than the stock (and other Samsung) USB chargers.. but, it's what works.. the ONLY thing that works. And I have noticed that when connected to a USB Power charger, the Mega's Red LED light turn on faded.. however, when connected to the SONY External Power Pack, is bright red. Clearly more juice going in.. or something like that. Again, anyone else with similar symptoms and a fix the charging time, or, any good recommendation on a extra strong USB power adapter/charger that will make this thing at least charge faster?

Sounds like something is not letting your phone sleep or the battery is defective. Try putting CPU spy on it and let it set for a while. Then check to see if it is getting into deep sleep or if it is even stuck at a certain frequency.
There is an app on the playstore called Galaxy charging. Try it to see what rate it is charging. Though with the rate your phone discharges, the charger may only being supplying an amount just over the drain rate which is why it takes so long to charge.

I would flash the stock rom back into your phone and see how the battery works then as this not normal as mentioned by other members as I am still on the stock rom but rooted only and I have great battery life.
That is were to start by flashing the stock rom and if no change then battery or maybe a hardware problem.
Did you have good battery life before you starting flashing with the phone or did this occur after the stock rom was removed and custom rom with stuff removed to gain performance?

You could try to remove the battery from the phone for about 5 secs and re-install and see it that helps as sometimes if you take the charger off as soon as it is done charging it might not show 100% at times when booting as I leave mine on for a bit longer and it seems to help..even though charge light is green..I leave it longer on.
If your phone is rooted get a app called battery calibrator from the google store as it is free and install it and just before you shut down the phone to charge wipe the battery stats with this app and then shutdown phone and fully charge and then see how the battery works after the battery stats wipe as that can usually help.

Thanks for the tip. Installed the app you recommend, now I understand better. With the stock Samsung USB charger I get 420 readings. With the other 2 chargers I get 500 and 540. However, with the Sony External Power Pack I get 1900!..no wonder it charges super fast with it! My question now is what's up with all the USB chargers I have? I even tried my old Galaxy Tab 7 charger (strongest rated charger I have) and still only feeds 480. This is all so bizarre. So, where to get a super strong charger for the Mega?

Usually when this happens there is something wrong with the USB cable not necessarily the charger. Is the sony cable a USB type cable or a hard wired one? If it is USB type try using it with the other chargers and see what your results are.

Yes indeed I notice the Sony Power Pack cable is short and thick. The Samsung cable is long and thin. I get much higher charging power using the thick short cable. Maybe I need go shop for a proper longer/thicker cable.

I've certainly found the USB cable makes a big difference to the charging speed. I got a couple of 2m cables off Ebay and they're hopelessly slow, but the stock Samsung cable is fast. I just wish it was a bit longer!
I have the same issue
I have the Sprint Mega. Not refurbished and original factory state but I have horrific charge/discharge issues. Right now, my phone just got to 100% charge which I then unplugged the charge cable. Within 5 mins, I went from 100% to 96% and it is losing battery even quicker.
VeEuzUKY: It's been a while but do you still have this phone? Any updates? I should prob invest in a thicker USB cable like you've describe. It has the most charge rate.
I got my mega 6.3 last week. Since then it has said 100% charged... even when charging or dead. So I got a new battery thinking it was the battery but its obviously not and im not sure what it is that could be the problem. Im not sure if its crucial for my phone, if it can be fixed easily and cheaply, or if I need to return my phone to the place I bought it from.

Anyone else experience slow to almost non existent charging speed if the phone has been on for a few hours?
The only way it goes back to charging fast is if I restart the phone while its plugged into a charger.
I have tried using the stock charger and aftermarket ones and different cables as well. Makes no difference until restart.
Chime in if anyone has any idea whats happening and/or how to fix it.
PS: I am unlocked and rooted if that matters.
Is the screen off? Having the screen on during charging will skew the charge cycle.
Does it charge normally when shutdown?
Possible battery, charging port, or mobo failure.
Check phone for any signs of battery swelling.
Same issue here. Got the phone today, charges sloooow by USC-C as well as QI... Although it shows "fast charging" in settings. I will check, if it's better after a reboot.

Doesnt matter if the screen is on or off, I even left overnight and gained like 8% charge.
Battery seems to hold a charge fine, there is no swelling and discharge behavior is normal. Used to charge normally a few days ago.

SOT has it diminished significantly?
Charging at a start temperature above 72°F?
If so it sounds like a charge port or mobo failure... sorry.
Try clearing the system cache and a hard reboot.
Try toggling fast charging on/off 3 times.

Ill have to check the temp next time I am at room temp. I was playing some COD so I was over 80F when I started charging just now. Did not have to restart so maybe its good.

Make sure the port is clean and free of debris.
Inspect and carefully clean* if needed with a toothbrush and a small amount of anhydrous isopropyl alcohol.
Lol, RO water if needed than the alcohol.
Allow to dry completely.
*I live in a dusty environment and even after 2 years never had to clean my C port. However my bdu cargo pants pockets are lint free, not all pants pockets are. In general these ports seem to stay clean but you know how that goes...
Same here. Did someone find a solution?
In my case it just normalized itself after a few days of usage... strange thing was, that the slow charging affected both, usb and qi charging.

Btw maybe intelligent charging. If phone can't detect a time where you don't use it it have problem adapting charging speed. If you change everyday the moment you put it on charge better deactivate that option

I only charge at night so I don't need my phone to warm up from quick charge. On my old Samsung Galaxy Note 9 I could do it, but now I can't find the setting.

The only harmful part of the charge cycle on this phone is the top-off, and you can adjust that. You could use a 5W charger but I doubt it would extend the life.
More beneficial is checking other threads for features that may drain (add wear to) the battery.

Simply use a 12 watt or less brick.
Fast charging needs a compatible 25w brick and cable (Samsung). In most phones it has to be enabled. Disabling fast charging is easy... enabling it sometimes is not

The whole point of having a feature is to use it when needed. If I am in a hurry I want to activate 30W charging with a single toggle in the settings. I don't have to bring two different power bricks, one 5W, one 30W, and manually switch between them.

you should get a new phone it's the only way to fix it because it's broken and you can't fix it when it's like that.
