I just found a unused Samsung galaxy SIII and I'm wanting to use it to bypass the school's website blocker on their wi-fi. I can't find an app that uses the phones wi-fi as the mobile network when turning on the hotspot. Also I was wanting to use a VPN with the hotspot on the phone. Does anyone have a good suggestion?
Also this isn't part of this thread's topic but does anyone know how to root the Samsung Galaxy SIII without using a pc?
WiFi as the mobile data = not possible as you need a source interface which is the Cellular Signal receiver (mobile data) and a separate interface for the destination which is the WLAN or WiFi interface.
Rooting is easier with a computer. Use PC running Windows and flash a custom recovery like TWRP using Odin. Use a PC running Ubuntu and flash custom recovery using heimdall. Search Google further and find the answer that works for you.
Wifi repeater is not possible on android. You could use the phones WiFi to connect to the network and connect a pc to the phone via USB.. In all honesty I don't think you'll get past the schools hardware firewall.

Hello Everyone! I want to use my Laptop's internet connection via usb cable using my Dell Streak. So I searched for an app that will enable me to do that. While I'm searching and reading all the stuffs that I think that will be the answer to my question, I stumbled upon the word Tether/Tethering.
In which will enable your computer/Laptop to use your Mobile Device's Internet plan or 3g connection. However, what I really wanted was the reverse of this process. I want to use my Laptop's Internet connection. From my laptop connection through USB? or Bluetooth, then to my Dell Streak. So I can surf the Internet using my Mobile device.
I searched the forums already and learned that the latest post for this topic was last 2008. I hope there is already a solution to do this.
Everyone, If you know any apps that I can use please do tell me. Thank you very much!
there aren't any that I know of plus I think it would need to be computer prog not android
There are guides to do it in linux but you need to do it manually I think.

You'll be needing to set up a local network via the wireless connection on your PC.
If you are already on the internet via wifi on the PC, why not use the wifi on the streak?
If you are hooked up via Ethernet/other cable, then broadcasting the connection on the PC's wifi is fairly simple.
Hope this helps.

he wants to do it via usb or bluetooth..
I was able to do this with Linux, but it was a pain and some programs couldn't access the internet. I think only the browser worked.
Would be difficult with usb.It might be easier if you use bluetooth or wifi.
Just go ahead and setup your ad-hoc network or soft-ap on your pc,and make sure you have inter access sharing service or similar software running.
I would recommend you use a wifi soft-ap,it's super easy to setup on winxp/2k/2k3.

I'm asking this question on BEHALF of MYSELF and OTHERS. Can you SHARE your LAPTOP or PC's connection with your android phone.
For example lets say i wanted to play a gameloft game but i need to download additional data through Wifi, is there a way for me to use my Laptop or Pc's connection through my phone so i can download the game for my phone.
If anyone has a solution to this question please make your answer VERY DETAILED
I am on a XPERIA X10, Please reply or answer THIS QUESTION
Advice:
I've Googled about this problem. I have data plan in my phone and no WiFi at home. Many people like me also use this way to get connection. But what they got were "FAILED". ONLY WAY = connect TO WiFi (can't say every game, but maybe 1% can use reverse tether method)

melvinchng Same here i dont have Wifi in my house, there certian games that wont download with my carrier network and insist on me downloading through wifi. I ALREADY know how to download GAMELOFT GAMES that require wifi only but it is very inconsistant and dodgy on my x10.
Theres a wifi signal on my laptop i can connect to the but the signal on android phones are so bad i just cant connect to the router.
If your pc has wifi(I know you don't have wifi in your house) you can download and use the app connectify for windows
If your pc has a working wifi card (with drivers installed of course), then you can share its connection via wifi. If you have windows 7, you can use "Connectify" or "Virtual Router". If you have windows xp and above (on a dell pc. Don't know if it works on others), then you can use "Dell Laptop to Hotspot Converter".
there is a guide on my device's forum about this here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1229558
for the step where it says "bridged local area connection and LG adaptor," you must find the equivalent of the lg adaptor that applies to your phone (if that makes sense). other than that, i think it should work.
What you are looking for is called "usb-internet pass-through" correct? Alot of custom roms already have it as a feature in the wifi setting, next to wifi hotspot. Im not familiar with your device or whether you are rooted but its pretty handy. Can also work as a wireless card, as in turn wifi setting on the phone and plug it into a desktop that doesnt have a wifi card and presto, wifi through your phone thats through a wireless router so its not eating up your data quota and much faster than the 3g on your phone. Submitting a pic of my wireless settings on Virtous Unity ROM.

That would be awesome, you could have a wifi router everywhere with you (as long as you don't forget to take the usb cable with you), just connect with the usb to a PC that has broadband, and then use the phone's wifi as a dongle.
I am currently in a situation that i would use something like that seeing that i have forgotten my dongle at home.
phone tether
There are a couple of different ways to tether your phone to your pc. One way is to use an app called PDA net, you can get your phone and computer setup through their website in about 2-3 minutes, super easy to use and you don't need to root your phone, the down side is unless you pay for the pro version all "https", secure sites, will only be accessible for a week. If you decide to root or have already rooted, you can download a number of different apps that give you the ability to use your phone as a hot spot without paying monthly to your provider.

=> use this app called FoxFi..its not on the google store..download it from internet..with this u can use the connection to tether via bluetooth in all devices..though, wi-fi routing works only in few..if it doesnt work..then first try this app to reverse tether(Reverse Tether build.2012.04.05.paid - torrents) and then use FoxFi..reply if it works or not..
AT&T detected my foxfi tethering and will now charge me for a 5g tethering package if I continue to use it. Greedy.... What does it matter if I tether? Bunch if nazis...

Hi all,
I just got my brand new Samsung Galaxy SIII
All is well except for the fact that the phone is failing to even detect the adhoc wifi that I've setup. I get my home's internet using a mobile cdma usb modem and I've setup an adhoc wifi connection thru internet sharing option in windows 7.
Here's a twist though: When using my Ipod Touch- I noticed that the Ipod manages to detect the same adhoc wifi network I've setup- the Ipod also manages to connect to the network but fails to provide any internet. (from windows 7)
Oddly enough- the only way I can get adhoc wifi to work is when I use it on my Ipod from Linux Ubuntu. I cannot connect to adhoc wifis from either windows 7 or linux on my SGS3.
Is there any way I could get my SGS3 to detect and connect to the adhoc wifi from either windows 7 or Ubuntu with the mobile internet that I use at home??
Bump. Anyone??
Android's Wifi manager by default does not detect or use adhoc networks.
There exist several patches (requires root) but I'm not sure if they have been confirmed to work/ported to the S3 yet.
CM9 should include adhoc support.
I strongly recommend using the Windows7 application 'Connectify' which creates a full-fledged ap-mode network and not an adhoc while still allowing you to keep connected to any current Wifi network.
I guess similar tools might exist for OsX and Ubuntu Linux but I've only used them in forward tether and not reverse tether so far.
By the way, this is a forum not a support center. So it might take some time to get a reply.
Bumping after 3 hours is just rude seeing that we all try to work together for free

This issue is ICS Related, I had the Galaxy nexus for 6 months, i tried every solution that is out there with no luck, hopefully CM will include this fix or else use "Connectify" which personally I don't recommend.

If you haven't tried it already- then I suggest you try disabling your antivirus when you share the network. That's what I did in the end to finally make it work.
hi,
i have a samsung galaxy camera and win 10 laptop.
i would like to know how do i connect the win 10 laptop to wifi with the wifi data that i have stored in my android device.
thanks
Connect both devices to the same wifi and your win 10 laptop should detect the camera in network menu.
idk what you want to achieve doing that. Transfer photos? the camera has inbuilt sharing functionality like mail or just use a data cable.
Since you didn't specify any specific way you want to do this, here is what I would've done:
1. USB Tethering:
Using a usb cable, you can share your device's internet connection with the computer.
2. Wifi hotspot
You can share the internet of either wifi or mobile data using your device as a wifi hotspot.
3. Copying password from device
You never stated if you had root or not, so I assume you do. So just download a wifi password recovery app from play store, open it and copy the password from there.
If you need help on how to do the hotspot or tethering option, google is your friend
