Very weird....
I had two Google accounts on my phone. I found out that on each one of them there was a different WhatsApp backup (on each google drive account) - one from today and one from 2016.
After formatting, WhatsApp finds the backup of today, but after finishing the process there are only messages earlier than 2016....
I tried to delete the google account with the early backup from the phone and perform the process again, but it acts the same.
Any idea?? Help

Lately I had been having a problem with my contacts and messages, that I've seen mentioned on here a few times and I seem to have fixed it on my phone. Btw, I am stock, rooted, TWRP, S-ON. The symptoms I was having were:
20-30 seconds to open text messages
entering names to call/text/email would not auto complete
my "people you may know" screen would come up blank
my "linked contacts" screen would come up blank
I tried clearing cache and data on all the contacts storage apps, and wiping cache and dalvik cache, removing my google account and unsyncing facebook account, then wiping all contacts and resyncing them. None of these helped.
Thinking that possibly there was some kind of corruption in the contact database or app, or that I possibly caused something when I restored texts or contacts with Ti Backup at some point, what I did was create a new Ti Backup of Contacts Storage, and a Nandroid just to be safe, then I used Ti's Extract from Nandroid Backup feature to restore Contacts Storage (app + data) from the very first Nandroid Backup I made after I installed TWRP. I had to relink some contacts but everything seems to be working just fine now. From what I can tell, the app version on Contacts Storage hasn't changed, so I think it's a database or config problem.
Hope this helps someone, or leads someone to find the root cause and fix for those who may not have a good backup to go to. Good luck.
I'll need to try that
Update
I backed up the app in TB, wiped the apps data in TB and then restored the apps data again in TB. It helped with the contacts but the messages were slow to load on a few of the threads.

Well, my phone was with the internal storage almost full, than I couldn't update my apps. Then, my whatsapp was an older version.
Today, I woke up and all my chats were gone! It asked me if I would want to restore, but it got stucked at 81%. I closed the app and tried again. Same problem. Then, I had a backup on drive from yesterday 23h30. I reseted my phone and would restore my chats from there. I didn't do a bakup for msgstore .db.crypt file, because the backup on drive was updated.
When I installed the whatsapp, it asks me about the backup, but it fails and the chats aren't recovered. I noticed that there was missing an google account in the phone (I use two), but still not working. Now I have to wait 24h to try again.
The problem is that I was using an old version of whatsapp and now the app is the new? Can I recover the msgstore .db.crypt file?
Thanks
Hello,
I suddenly lost all my WhatsApp messages for no reason, and restoring them from my local backup does not work. Can you help me fixing this issue?
Let me explain:
In January I used the app « Import That App Messages from Windows Phone », in order to recover my WhatsApp messages from my old Windows phone to my new Android phone. I successfully performed the data transfer process to this phone (OnePlus 7T Pro, Android 10).
However today when I opened the WhatsApp app I suddenly got a message which said something like « Your chat history stopped working. You can restore your data by clicking on Restore ». I chose Restore but it actually only restored empty group discussions, without any messages inside, and no discussion were restored. Then, in the WhatsApp settings I checked my backup settings and saw there was a Google Drive backup dated of January (which corresponds to the moment I originally transferred my data from my old Windows Phone) and a local backup from February (which contains important new messages arrived in the meantime).
So I decided I would try to restore the local backup, since it is more recent.
I uninstalled WhatsApp, then installed it again and followed the instructions until it asked me to restore from a Google Drive backup. At this moment I turned off my Internet connection, clicked on Continue, waited until a message told me something like « The research is taking longer than expected ». Then I clicked on Skip so that WhatsApp detected my local backup and asked me if I wanted to restore it. I clicked on Restore, then the process started with a progression bar, but when the bar arrived at 100% I got an error message proposing me to Ignore or to Look for an older backup. The 1st button led to a restore only of empty group discussions.
I uninstalled WhatsApp again, did the same process and tried the 2nd button, which led to a search for a Google Drive backup, which I don’t want to use.
I tried the process several times but it failed every time.
I precise that in my internal phone storage I kept a folder « WhatsApp » inside which I have 3 visible folders: Backups, Databases, and Media. There are also 4 hidden folders: .Shared, .StickerThumbs, .Thumbs, and .trash.
Inside Backups there are 4 files: chatsettingsbackup.db.crypt1, statusranking.db.crypt1, stickers.db.crypt1, and wallpaper.bkup.
Inside Databases there is 1 file: msgstore.db.crypt12 (which I believe is the main backup file to recover my messages).
Inside Media there are 10 folders : .Status, WallPaper, WhatsApp Animated Gifs, WhatsApp Audio, WhatsApp Documents, WhatsApp Images (this folder contains all my pictures sent and received), WhatsApp Profile Photos, WhatsApp Stickers, WhatsApp Video, and WhatsApp Voice Notes.
I really need help. Can you help me restore my messages? What should I do?
Thank you a lot in advance!
Hello,
I need to restore an old WhatsApp backup from 2014 (crypt7). I still have the same phone number, so there should be no problem.
Usually I do the following:
1) Copy the backup to "/sdcard/Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/"
2) Install WhatsApp
3) Start WhatsApp and verify the phone number
4) A notification asks me if I want to restore the local backup
5) Done
This worked for recent backups and also for backups back to mid 2016.
For the backup from 2014, WhatsApp didn't find the local backup, instead I was asked to check for Goode Drive backups.
As mentioned here in this case I turned off WiFi & mobile data, let WhatsApp check for online backups till the network error appeared and skipped.
But in the end, there was no local backup found.
The problem is also, from all this trying, my number got now blocked for 12 h because WhatsApp thinks I'm a spammer, sadly.
What am I doing wrong?
1) Should I remove my Google Account from my smartphone (Android 12) after installing WhatsApp and before staring the verification process?
2) Would it maybe help to install and old WhatsApp version like 2.21.8.17 as mentioned here?
3) Is there a way to push a local WhatsApp backup to Google Drive, so I could restore it from there?
4) Can I do anything against the spam protection mechanism, so WhatsApp knows that all these verifications are for a good reason and not for spamming?
Thanks in advance.
Hi All. I downgraded my phone from MIUI 13 to 12.5 and forgot to take local backup of Whatsapp. Although i did a google drive backup one day before flashing. Now I am having difficulty retreiving my data from google drive. Whatsapp is giving me this error after locating backup on drive and downloading chats of 290mb, it fails to inititalize. although it does download the media later on in gallery and file managger but no chats in the app.
this is the exact error i get: Unable to restore your chats from this backup. Do you want to restore your chats from an older backup?

Yes. Same account. Apparently before making a backup i momentarily turned on end to end encryption and turned it off at once. For some reason it created a crypt15 file and corrupted the chat. I was able to retrieve the crypt15 file from gdrive from a third party app. But I'm unable to use it on whatsapp since it's asking for a password which it shouldn't since i turned end to end encryption before backup
