S9/s9 Plus AI support - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Questions & Answers

Hi there i just want to ask. Will s9/s9+ have AI software in android 9 or newer version. (Or does it already has?
AI like huawei's Artificial intelligence or note 9's camera AI. Not talking about Bixby.
Do you have any information about it, or any explanation from samsung/reliable sources
Thanks.

There is already a note 9 port custom rom for s9 and s9+ exynos models which has the AI

I may be wrong but I think that the adaptive battery feature of 9.0 uses AI, but it does so remotely. I.e. usage patterns are sent to Google and then analysed. But I may be wrong!

How can I create a rom for Huawei P9 or Samsung Galaxy S7 (Edge) from Stock Android

My last and my current smartphones were nexus devices. Since google revealed the pixel I thought about other smartphones. But I don't like update speed from non-google companies.
How difficult would it be to convert the current Stock Android (for example android 7) to the Huawei P9, OnePlus 3 or the Samsung Galaxy S7 or any other top device.
And how much time would you need to support also the curved Display from the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge or to support the notification button from the OnePlus 3 and the fast charging.
To myself: I would say that I am quite good at Java but not in a professional way.It is just a hobby.
In general: If I buy the latest smartphone of a company like Huawei, Samsung, OnePlus or LG would it be possible to convert the current Android version to my device? How much time would I need for that if I only want the Stock Android functions and the fingerprint sensor (Cyanogen features are not needed) and how long would I need if I also want to support the device specific features like a pen or a curved display?
How dangerous would that be? Breaking my device would be pretty easy right?
If that is possible how do I convert the Stock android to my device?
Thanks a lot
p4
short answer: very difficult. Huawei uses custom SoC from HiSilicon, and the specs for these chips is not published. similarly for Samsung devices using Exynos chips. Samsung phones running Qualcomm have a better chance.
if you want to learn to build AOSP (or something like CM), start with the AOSP documentation, then the CM wiki. Or go to the device forums here and check if someone has already started progress. for Huawei and Samsung (exynos), it's a long journey.
it goes well beyond knowing Java.
relatively speaking, modern devices are tough to permanently brick as long as you don't touch the bootloaders.
Thanks for the answer

Huawei P20 - port camera and master ai?

Hi Everyone! Huawei P20 was just launched today, looking at the specs --- I can't see much difference besides the Camera, do you think its possible to port its camera and so called "Master AI"?
Thanks!
Why only the camera? It should be possible to port over all of the software.
I think that Huawei should really provide an upgrade to 8.1 and all of the new software functionality. Pretty horrible to release a flagship phone and 6 months later simply forget about it.
Update: The camera app seems to be already available in a leak, see

****few months .... ya but in a few months android 9 will be released and maybe we will get it in april 2019! I don't like Huawei updates nor sammy's ... i really hope nokia will release a proper flagship soon... android one is the way....
Mate 9 never got EMUI 5.1 / Android 7.1 that came out with P10 and P10 Pro
Relax, this is the first phone that gets android 8.1+ NNAPI integration and not just a simple 8.1 like nokia and essential did. Basically as the guy said above with the leaks, all of the new features of the P20 are coming to us and that takes some time to implement. Granted our brand new mate 10 pro aka huawei's flagship feels obsolate, outdated and lacking in hardware compared to the P20 series(speakers, wireless charge, bigger sensor, laser) but that will soon change in some part with android 8.1.. Hold your wallets and do patiense like we all do

How do you know all the new features of the P20 will come to the Mate 10?
@tboy2000: Huawei Mate 10 to get P20 AI features with Android 8.1
We have internal beta builds of 8.1 for the Mate 10 (non-Pro Chinese version) so they are being developed.
That being said, with the Mate 9 we also had internal builds of EMUI 5.1, but it was never released.
Most likely time to get the enhancements publicly is when Android P rolls out.

Thanks. So it's not 'all the new features' of the P20. It's just some extra AI scenes. He did not confirm face unlock, super slow motion, AIS, etc etc

Ofc its NOT ALL THE FEATURES of the P20, because some of them are hardware dependent, which Mate 10 Pro don`t have

Actually NONE of the P20 AI features is hardware dependent compared to Mate 10/Pro, AIS is a software solution, it just needed to account for OIS which isn't hard. P20 Pro is a different story.

think again the option to record in 960 fps is hardware dependent along with a few other modes
Is it working on mate 10?
Camera was 'ported' (it works simply by replacing hwcamera2 in /product/app/) right after firmware was leaked.

I saw this thread today
The P20 Camera app looks nicer at least
Hello, I was interested flashing the port however I'm kinda stuck whether if I root my phone (includes unlocking bootloader) will I still be able to receive and flash updates thru the updates checker? Or every time update is installed, I'll have to reroot it again. Recently came from note 3, flashing and doing things in Huawei are kinda different. I bricked my Note 3 several times and used odin tons of times so makes me think twice before doing things bec not much of stock firmware is available for flashing

[REQUEST] Treble Support

Hello All,
So this thread is dedicated to bringing treble to our note 8! The Galaxy S9 has received treble support and it's disappointing to not see it here.
What is treble?
It's basically a method of partitioning the system by separating the drivers (vendor) and the actual system. This allows for flashing of GSIs and according to current results from the S9 EVERYTHING WORKS without a hitch.
So please developers bring this to our devices and let us enjoy bugless AOSP!
Link to S9 Treble: https://www.google.ae/amp/s/forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s9/how-to/howto-treble-s9-t3765558/amp/
So you do realize that S9 came with treble from the factory right? The only way to bring treble to the n8 is via repartitioning the device and it can be fairly risky if you dont know what you are doing. I suggest you read some device threads that users have partitioned to treble and not a device that comes with it from the factory

To be honest note 8 just need kenrel supporting treble . We got twrp supporting treble but no kernel . There are no devs who really care about note 8 so I wouldn't expect much . But it's possible to port it
I dont think it ever will come the note 9 just got root i think if im not wrong according to to majisk amd its already partitioned for treble so basically the note 8 is toast once the father of root decided to leave thats it.!! It happened to alot of snapdragon samsungs this one will always stay on 7.1.1 with root hope this helps. Ive planned to jump in november
On my side, i don t understand why it s not possible for the note 8 when one plus 3, oneplus 5 and galaxy note 3 are in the treble update list (i ve read this list on xda). I just think sammy doesn t want to give treble for note 8 to force peoples to jump for the note 9 which is not attractive for me because the new spen features are gadget for me and the battery life will be the same (yes the spen blutooth explain a bigger battery). I think i will wait for the note 10 or the oneplus 6t (maybe it will feature a pen lol). The time will say.

I m sorry. After reading your comment, i v searched for the link and realized that i make a mistake. You re right. The note 3 is listed to receive android pie and no treble. As we know that all of the devices wich have oreo out of the box will automatically have treble and reading that some oneplus old devices will get treble, and seeing note 3 will receive android 9, i did a very speed conclusion that the note 3 will receive project treble. It s my mistake and i apologize for that. Really sorry.

i dont know if that the same i have huawe mate 8 and i cant flash oreo rom over nougat becoz partion so when i debrand it and got oreo via ota im able to flash oreo rom and treble what i want to say oreo partions allows treble dunno about note 8! maybe?
would love to see treble for the note 8. the dev love will eventually come to the note 8 as well, it is a really popular phone and over the next year or so most "regular" users will upgrade again and the moding community ill pick up on cheap, second hand note 8's as it is an excellent phone. really wish there was an AOSP rom with absolutely no samsung bull****, even if I would have to give up a lot of features - treble would make that possible.

Anyone using the S9 Plus with Filmic Pro? (and/or Zhiyun Smooth 4 gimbal)

Hi,
I have a Galaxy S9 Plus arriving tomorrow that I had intended to use with Filmic Pro and a Zhiyun Smooth 4 stabilizer (anyone got one?).
Somewhat belatedly, I've just discovered (here) that inbuilt restrictions prevent Filmic Pro from using the second rear camera.
Has anyone any experience of using the Filmic Pro's zoom function without the S9 Plus's optical zoom?
Thanks,
John Latter
Sadly it's true..
Samsung S9 and S9+ FiLMiC Pro v6 Compatibility Guide
The Samsung S9 and S9+ are capable of absolutely stunning footage when used with FiLMiC Pro v6 for Android, and we have worked hard to bring the best possible shooting experience to both handsets. However there are two issues that can impact on the available features you have access to and overall performance on the S9/S9+.
Samsung’s implementation of the camera framework
Firstly, Samsung’s implementation of the Android camera framework denies third party developers access to some feature that are available in the native Samsung camera app. This includes high-speed framerates such as 60fps, 120fps and 240fps.
On Exynos equipped devices we have found a workaround that allows us to deliver high speed framerates even though not officially supported (up to 240fps at 1080p, and up to 60fps at 4k), however this is not applicable to snapdragon equipped devices (see below for more information).
The current Samsung camera framework implementation also prevents third party developers from supporting the dual lenses found on the S9+. At present only the wide lens is supported.
Finally, in order to deliver stable 4k performance we need to use Samsung's 'limited' mode that prevents access to the cinematographer kit LOG/FLAT profiles as well as custom white balance controls.
The Snapdragon CPU
And secondly, in addition to Samsung’s restrictive implementation of the camera framework, they chose to produce the S9 and S9+ with two different CPUs: an Exynos version - and a Snapdragon version.
You can find out which CPU your devices uses with the app AIDA64.
Unfortunately not all chips are created equal and the Snapdragon version has the following limitations for video:
No support for 60fps at any resolution
Whilst we can bypass the Samsung 60fps limitation on Exynos devices, this is impossible on Snapdragon devices.
No support for 120fps.
Whilst we can bypass the Samsung 120fps limitation on Exynos devices, this is impossible on Snapdragon devices.
Automatic White Balance UI doesn’t update.
The camera driver doesn’t provide information about the current white balance being applied, so we cannot reflect this status on the UI on snapdragon equipped devices.
HDR video unsupported
On Exynos versions of the S9/S9+ we can support access to high dynamic range video recordings, however this is not currently supported on Snapdragon equipped handsets.

According to this thread on the US Samsung Community forums, the 2 x optical zoom is not available to S9 Plus owners in Pro Mode.
In "Auto Mode" the second rear camera may or may not be selected by the software, depending - apparently - on "how much light is available".
In other words, there are probably lots of S9 Plus owners walking around thinking they've just taken a zoomed photo whereas in reality it's likely to be only a digital crop.
Amazing!

I don't have any experience with Filmic Pro.
But the default Samsung camera app also doesn't use the secondary camera for video. So it's not different.....
I had a few back and forth converstions with Samsung and Filic Pro support teams.
The following is the correspondence with Filic pro ragarding the matter:
Blue is me and black is Filmic pro support
"I'm sure you guys get annoyed about hearing about samsung users questions, but unfortunately I do not see any clear and open communication about it.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S9+
I would like to know if you guys are working on support for 4k 60fps, 1080p 120fps, and use of the telephoto lens. If so, do you have an estimated time frame that each of these will be supported?
How can I, or other samsung users, help to make the dream of full feature utilization a reality?
thank you"
"Thank you for writing in. Unfortunately, the lack of support for frame rates above 30fps on your device is due to errors in Samsung's camera framework implementation on S9 series devices containing the Snapdragon chipset. To learn more about these limitations, please refer to this resource --> Samsung S9 and S9+ FiLMiC Pro v6 Compatibility Guide
Furthermore, Samsung currently restrict 3rd party developers from accessing the tele lens on their devices. They told us at their developers conference last year that they plan to address this problem, but they are running late.
If Samsung correct these issues in the future, we will be quick to support for the features you mention. The best we can do is continue to raise the issue with Samsung until they recognize their users' demand for these repairs."
"I contacted you guys a few days ago regarding the S9+ and it's features and I received a very informative response that helped me a lot; so thanks for that!
I then decided to contact Samsung about the same issues and they seem to not be on the same page as you guys. After 2 support inquiries here is what I received from Samsung:
"We understand you would like Samsung to enable the [email protected], 1080p @ 60/120/240fps and utilization of telephoto lens to Filmic Pro app.
In the previous email, our agent had informed the camera specifications which the Galaxy S9+ supports. Indeed the Galaxy S9+ hardware supports [email protected] and 1080p @ 60/120/240fps using the in built Samsung camera app.
As the hardware supports the required format for videos, it is upon us the app developers to utilize the Camera hardware and develop the app code which can support this feature.
Samsung cannot change the software for the Camera if third party apps cannot utilize the camera hardware of Galaxy S9+. In this situation, we request to contact the app developer again and confirm if there are new updates available for the app which can support the camera hardware of Galaxy S9+."
With this in mind, it seems that they (or at least their support staff) believe that there are no restrictions on what 3rd party developers can do with the Samsung hardware. Because they are such a large company I would understand that their support staff is not privy to the detailed information of this one specific issue, but I'm curious if the entire company is not actually aware of the issue.
I realize this is a vague question, but I'm wondering if there is anything that can be done to push Samsung to allow Filmic pro to access all of the features that it's hardware provides. I have done extensive research of message boards and forums, but to no avail.
Can you point me in the right direction? Can we start some sort of petition? What can we do to get Samsungs attention?"
"Thanks very much for the followup. While it's true that Exynos devices are capable of the high fps/resolution combinations he mentions, S9 devices containing the Snapdragon chipset cannot achieve this with stability. It's a bit unclear to me, but it almost looks like he claims that 3rd party developers might now have access to both front facing lenses (!!). I at least I think that's what he means by "we request to contact the app developer again and confirm if there are new updates available for the app which can support the camera hardware of Galaxy S9+."
Anyway, I'm going to pass this along to the development team now to determine if maybe we did miss something in a system update that might grant us access to more features (at least for Snapdragon variants of S9 series devices, if we're lucky). We do understand that Samsung place restrictions on 3rd party developers in this manner, but we were told by Samsung at their developers conference last year that they plan to lift some of these restrictions. Maybe they changed their mind and pressing them with more requests for this improvement is not such a bad idea."
Conclusion:
Although I did not completely determine both company's standing on the issue, at least some light was shed on the matter. It also seems that Filmic pro will now press the issues further with Samsung to open up full feature capability at a future date.
If anyone knows of a way that we can group together in an effort to get Samsung's attention, please post about it here.
Just use an iphone. Had issues with my gimbal, drones, YOU name IT on android. No Issues on the iPhone.

Hello
On Oreo Samsung Camera app used Telephoto lens for video as well when there is enough light before you start recording it will switch to Telephoto. adjusting the zoom from 2.0 anywhere else while you are recording switches to Wide lens. (You can see shift in perspective and hear the click).
I could easily test this by pointing the camera directly to a light bulb before starting a recording on AUTO with 2x zoom.. (this doesn't work on current latest build of Pie and stock Camera app for video.
On Oreo you can verify that Telephoto lens is used by sticking some object or your finger in front of the wide lens while recording. ]
What makes me pissed off the most on Pie is that there is no support for Pro Mode Video - you cannot set manual ISO and/or Shutter and this was the main reasons why I purchased Filmic Pro.
To my surprise on Pie / Exynos The Filmic Pro app is able to switch apertures as well. I haven't see this on any other 3rd party camera app.

Martin

Switching Galaxy S8 to Xiaomi Mi 8. Worth it?

Hi buddies!
My 3 last smartphones were Samsung ones (A5/2016, Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S8) and now I'm thinking of trying something different.
I have nothing to complain about my Galaxy S8, but let's say that I'm tired of it.
I use the smartphone mainly for for social media and taking pictures, so, the camera is the more important feature for me.
Thinking of a new smartphone, I have Xiaomi Mi 8 and OnePlus 6T in mind.
I had in my hands the Mi A1 and Mi A2, but never used one with MIUI.
How about the screen quality? Will I notice too much difference switching back from 1440p to 1080p?
Is Mi 8 camera better than Galaxy S8's?
What you guys have to say about this deal?
No, you won't notice the difference between 1440 and 1080. Screen is excellent but s8 screen is a little brighter. Nevertheless xiaomi developer team is really really slooooow don't expect to be up to date with Android releases. I mean I am running 8.1 on mi8 (flagship) while the S7 is already on Pie.

Most of Xiaomi users even don't know what is MIUI Beta/Weekly and the Global Stable ROM is very slow to update.
I had the S8 and made the change to Mi 8.
At first, running the Global stable rom, i was kinda let down. Hdr didn't work, camera was not good and headphone audio volume was low.
Then i installed the Global beta rom (based on pie). All the above problems were fixed, the camera if you want to install the bsg Gcam is Amazing. Stock is good too but Gcam is miles ahead. The norch support is improved, you can now get notifications on status bar.
The mi 8 is snappier ( touchwiz is laggy).Battery on this thing is really good (geting 7h SOT on miui). The Mi 8's screen is a downgrade but not as big as i first thought. I played many videos side by side and could notice "blacker" blacks on the S8.
My opinion is to go with mi 8 if you want to install a custom rom, to make it pixel-like or AOSP in general.
Imho even a Redmi note 6 pro would be a massive upgrade from any Samsung device.
Can't stand their roms and bloatware. Great hardware but awful software.

S7 has Pie only on custom Roms! Mostly on crappy AOSP Rom's where the battery life and camera quality is really bad.
Mi 8 and also Poco has Pie on official Beta from vendor. Even the S9 didn't have a official beta from Vendor with Pie (as far i know, but don't keep an eye on S9 dev).
Please keep the facts! Has nothing to do with glorifying someone.

No. You are confusing them. S7 has no official OTA pie update. S9 does not have stabel OTA pie. Infact, both Xiaomi and Samsung are really slow.

I have Mi8 it is very good phone at an excellent price, I moved from Galaxy Note 4
Mi8 battery life is great, usually I get +7 hours of SOT, and sometimes I reach 48 hours of use on one charge.
display is great, colors and brightness
I don't play games on it but the performance is smooth in general
the design and dimensions are very good also
the finger print sensor is fast , convenient and well placed.
charging is faster than Samsung's
I have used Samsung's software for years and I like, but you can easily get used to MIUI.
the stock camera software is not that good, but you can use a Gcam port like I do.
I have one complain about the Mi8 which is the speaker loudness, it is nearly inaudible if compared to my previous Note 4.
if you "need" a new phone immediately it will be a very good choice at a budget.
If you are looking for an upgrade from the S8, I think you Mi 8 is not a suitable one, neither the OP6T, especially with that in-display slow andn insecure finger print sensor.
I explained my reasons here - https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-8/how-to/love-mi-8-t3876024.

You will notice the difference in sound quality if you have an In-ear monitor (IEM) like KZ ZSN.
but price wise, and performance yeah I will definitely choose Mi8. will just need to unlock and tweak the audio. cheers
I've done it myself and I can say that I love the MI8 for its overall performance and MIUI10 which is to me so far the best Android experience. I do miss some stuff tough like the wireless charging and IP68 certification which was really nice to have. But I don't regret my purchase.

And what do you say about the camera?
Do you think it's better than S8's?
Some guys told be that Mi8 + GCam crushes S8 in pictures.

I honestly couldn't tell if it's better or worse but it's really decent ?
I have the The mi 8 pro (in UK) and can confirm that the camera is nowhere near as good as the Samsung.
Very, very, disappointed.
