Seems like SMS delivery report is creating that notification.
If u r irritated with this and dont want to check delivery receipt u can try turning this feature off in setting.

Ok, I've looked around and what I'm looking for doesn't seem to exist, I was wondering if it was because it is technically impossible/very hard to do or because nobody try it yet.
This is my understanding of how things work:
After receiving an SMS message, the recipient mobile phone will send back a message delivery report to the SMS center to inform whether there are any errors or failures (example causes: unsupported SMS message format, not enough storage space, etc). This process is transparent to the mobile user. If there is no error or failure, the recipient mobile phone sends back a positive delivery report to the SMS center. Otherwise it sends back a negative delivery report to the SMS center.
If the sender requested a status report earlier, the SMS center sends a status report to the sender when it receives the message delivery report from the recipient.

What I'm thinking about is way to do this: Once a phone receives the SMS, it sends a spoofed "Storage full" or "Message format not supported error" to the SMS center instead of a positive delivery report.
That way you could receive and read SMS but to the sender it appears you haven't received it. In short this gives you plausible deniability.
I've had it happened to me recently because my phone memory was full. My phone sent a "Memory full" message to the network and the sender did not receive a message report. If a phone can legitimately refuse to receive a message it means it could also be possible to fake that "memory full" message.
Any thoughts?
I love the idea, but the only time I would see having the need for this kind of plausible deniability (i.e. a court of law), the person questioning the receipient of the text message could simply ask for a record of the phone bill which, in most cases (if requested), could provide the time and date of all text messages sent and received. lol. Just curious, but do you mind if I ask what you would use it for? (sorry for the run-on sentence)
I like this idea..maybe a reverse engineering hack of SMS Counter or another counter type widget/app?

There would be several uses for that kind of app.
One of the scenarios (the one that got me thinking about it) is someone receiving unwanted messages from a specific individual, for example from someone abusive. Even if the victim trashes the messages without reading them (they are several apps available that allow you to do that), through message reports, the abuser is still able to know that his messages were at least received by his target. If he keeps receiving "undelivered" statues, he'll simply stop sending texts.
I know that in those kind of situations the victim is expected to change her/his phone number, but that's the whole idea, not having to change your phone number just because of unwanted text messages.
Still no way? Any app to do this?
In the sms app it doesn't show the time for every message but only for a group of messages.
Is it possible to show the time for every message?
It's annoying that people send me a message and I don't know when i received it.
I was just wondering the same thing...
I have recently purchased an S3 and I am quite happy with it except it is showing one unread message and when you open messages there is not any unread messages.
I have managed to clear it by rebooting my phone and then when I receive another SMS it goes back one unread even though I have read.
How do I clear this annoyance.

Are you using the stock messaging app? I bet you're not... If you have a third-party SMS app, the stock messaging app will continue to register and notify about new messages received, even if they've been read in the third-party app.
To resolve this, just switch off notifications in the stock messaging app.
This is a bug in the firmware, it has been fixed you just need to wait for the OTA to be pushed to your phone

My colleague had this issue and I played around with it on Friday without success but she says that the issue was resolved on Friday and she has received several messages and calls but the 1 is not stuck on the icon after reading the message anymore. I am at a loss as to what I did...
I already have the last update over WIFI from samsung for my s3 after this last update the icon of messages and mail when new mail or message arrive it has "1" on it's icon to indicates new message or mail even if I see this message it still have this "1" and still even more sms or mails received
the only way to make it disappear is by restarting my s3
note: no root no custom rom only the official one come with it and official updates over WIFI

Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
I just swtiched to CM11 on my Nexus 5. In google hangouts the text messaging doesnt seem to be behaving the same now. Problem i am having is with group messages. I send text to 4 or 5 people at once but their responses all come back in separate messages to me. they look like they are just to me but it seems from responses that they are to everyone in group. It didnt do this before. If i sent messages to group, all their responses came back in the same message thread. if i had seperate message to someone it was in its own thread. please help because this is very annoying. there has to be a setting or something that got switched
I think using google hangouts its meant for that to happen if I am correct. If your sending a text it sends to individually but if you send a hangout messages thats a group message.

It definitely wasn't doing this before. Send a group message and it wouldn't seperate into individual messages. It absolutely shouldn't be sending me a message that looks like it's from one person and only going to me but actually is going to a group.
