Yes, it is true.
If you only update one part of the firmware package (AP, BL, CP and CSC) you won't receive updates anymore.
Not OTA and not via smart switch.
But you can flash a complete firmware package with Odin again. (AP, BL, CP and CSC)
These package must have been released for your CSC as an OTA Update.
Then you will get OTA/Smart switch firmware updates again.
I don't know what any of those stand for. My bad

If you have successfully flashed all the parts from the same officially released version then yes.
Also because you asked earlier:
AP is the system partition.
BL is the BootLoader software
CP is the modem software
CSC is carrier specific/country related components. So things like any preloaded software, WiFi calling, etc
Take note that you only need to flash one of the CSC files. Flashing CSC_HOME will not wipe your data, but flashing the other one will.
The only thing I have done is went from build number arf4 to 8. If I go back to arf4 will I receive otas again. I don't want to miss out on pie

I am running ARI1, which is newer then ARF4 or ARF8. I see references to ARF4 but not ARF8, so I have no idea where or what the ARF8 is for you. But let me explain it again for ya.
In order to get OTA updates normally you need to be running the same parts from one firmware version. This firmware version must be one that Samsung has actually released.
You will not get any OTA updates if you mix and match parts of firmware versions... This means:
You will not get OTA updates if you install the BL from ARH7 and the AP, CP and CSC from ARI1 (firmware versions are examples and this assumes it is even possible to mix/match like this)
If the AP, BL, CP and CSC all came from the same version (for example ARI1) you would get OTA updates.
This firmware version needs to be one that Samsung has actually released. It doesn't matter where you get it from (Sammobile, Updato, Samfirm app, a link on the forum here) as long as it comes from a source that you trust and is a firmware version Samsung has actually released.
So if you installed a firmware bundle that came from Samsung but that Samsung did not release (like the ARG7) then you will not get any OTA updates. In this case you simply install a version that they did release (like ARG8) and you will get OTA updates again.
Lastly the android Pie beta has additional requirements that must be met. What info I have read indicates that in order to participate you must have a device that is either:
locked to the Sprint or T-Mobile network
a non-operator-locked device
an open-market version.

Hi all,
I recently bought a Galaxy S3 I9300 International through a coupon (like groupon) and they sent me a Phone with CSC "COA" (cosmote, Romania)
Iinstalled my Italian sim without any issue, so i think the phone is unlocked or similar.
I noticed that the phone has the firmware XXEMC2 (March 2013?) and i want to install all new updates... but i think that Romania doesn't update regularly the official firmware (i don't see custom icons for the romanian firmware)
Is it advisable to flash the Italian Firmware (maybe the latest XXEMF6, or the actual XXEMC2), and change the CSC code to ITV to get newer updates soon?
Or i'm approaching to an unnecessary procedure that may brick my phone (or voiding the warranty?)
Thanks in advance!
Having the right CSC and unmodified status will allow you receive OTA updates, which will probably be six months behind those posted on xda.
Go to sammobile and download the latest rom for the country where you will be using the phone, flash using odin on your pc. This gives you the right modem and won't brick your phone.
Thanks for the reply.
Now i'm downloading the latest ITV firmware I9300XXEMG4_I9300ITVEMG2_ITV.zip from the site you specified (seems to be the one that Kies tries to install, since it has the icon highlighted.
Then, i need to flash the firmware twice in order to change the CSC Code, right?
Do i need to do other task, in order to have the "unmodified" status ?
Remember that the latest MG4 firmware alters the format of your efs folder. Have a look in the general section for more info.

Thanks, i'll download the same firmware i'm using now, but with CSC ITV (XXEMC2, March 2013)
Best go read the stickies in general before you flash anything, your logic on updating seems confused. The CSC code makes almost no difference to how you use the phone.

Yes i'm aware that the CSC makes no differences to the phone, but now i'm actually bound to the Cosmote carrier, and i think he doesn't release updates regularly; am I wrong?

No, the firmware is irrelevant to the carrier. Only simlock is carrier specific, if your sim works then you can use any firmware.

I think i'm confused now
That's my noob point of view:
I unboxed the phone and installed my sim without any issue, so i think it's not simlocked.
I think that the Cosmote - Romania carrier (CSC "COA") doesn't release updates often (I don't see firmware XXEMF6 or the latest XXEMG4 (/efs issue apart)
I'm sticky with stock/original/samsung firmware XXEMC2 (march 2013)
if i flash the exact revision, but ITV, (since i'm italian) Firmware i can obtain all the fresh, unbranded, updates.
now... i don't know exactly the roll-out date policy for every firmware /country, and if any carrirer can/has to "customize" a firmware in order to release (with a delay, of course) And/Or if it's interested to release an update.
What i'm thinking now is "nice. an update... let's install." but i want to be more-than-sure that this simple procedure won't brick my phone.
Please be patient with me.

Anytime you flash anything you Risk bricking your phone and or voiding your warranty. The. Only official procedures for updating your firmware are kies and ota updates.
allright.. i flashed the ITV firmware adn it went OK
but now i see the correct CSC, and Kies says that my phone doesn't support updates.
I correctly flashed a second time, but with no result.
Any tips?
You can still update your firmware with kies. To do so you need to manually input model and serial numbers . also you have to put phone in download mode before connecting to computer.

i did this procedure (i told to Kies my model and S/N ) to factory reset the phone and Kies downloaded a Firmware.
it downloaded I9300XXEMC2 (the same) but with CSC I9300QXFEMA2 :silly:
Now my phone has a UGLY splash boot of "La Fleur" carrier!
Before this madness i had a, as far i know, a International S3 (CSC EMC1 (COA))... now i have a branded Phone!
(though my sim still works without issues)
What the hell has happened?
If you want ota updates or want to update by using kies than stay with this firmware. If you want the newest unbranded firmwares than flash with Odin any firmware you like that is compatible with I 9300. Make sure CSC matches your region. The lafleur screen is the boot animation which can be replaced manually if you root. You may be able to change csc with CSC changer app. Probably need root for that too. You can always reflash the firmware update you initially flashed and were happy with. Whatever kies gives you is what the phone was programmed initially for your phone. I think. I prefer to use sammobile and Odin as you can get more current firmwares
if you want to customize your phone by changing csc or flashing firmwares even official firmwares than do not use kies or ota for updating for updating. also since customization always risky it is best to back up your EFS. this too requires Root. PLEASE READ THE STICKIES . and the FAQs . before you proceed with flashing anything else. Right now your phone is official and upgradeable through kies.If you are not happy with what samsung gives you than I suggest you ROOT

The ARF5 Isn't official, at least not yet. If you use apps like SamsungPay that rely on safety net, you're best off not to use that version, at least until or if it becomes official.

The reason I say it *was* misleading is because the title made it seem like there was a U1 version of the 2ARF2 release. While I'm not in that boat, there are people looking to swap carriers, which requires flashing to the U1 to remove carrier settings, before then flashing to a new carrier.

The reason why it is failing is because you are on a high boot loader, you current on V3 while the U1 firmware that you was trying to flash is on V2.. You can only flash firmware that's on the same boot loader.
You would need to download G965U1UEU3ARG7 and flash it in order to be on the U1 firmware...

To be honest it takes as long as it takes... Though for the U1 firmware it does appear to be the last one released after the carriers.
I would imagine that before they release a firmware that covers all the carriers they want to make sure it works for the individual carriers... But that's a theory/speculation I have.

Think I found what your talking about... I am not sure if flashing the U1 firmware will work in this case given it's an S9+ and not an S8. Hopefully it does when the appropriate U1 firmware is released.
Depending on where you got the phones from maybe try doing a return and get a refund?

No biggie... Just for clarification (if it helps in the future) you can only flash files with the same bootloader version as what is currently installed. You can also flash bootloader versions that are higher then what is currently installed on the device.
What you can not do is flash bootloader versions lower then what is currently installed.
Finding the bootloader version is easy once you know how. Using the firmware version indicated:
G965USQU3ARG7
The bootloader version is the number before the last 4 characters of the firmware version... In this your looking for the number before ARG7... Since the number is 3 it means this firmware uses the version 3 bootloader.

My device is unlocked, but I have the same problem of lease Sprint. I did search in the web and I found this thread, I did download the files you posted, but I have already the firmware before mentioned and flash it using Patched Odin, but it didn´t work. Still having the same warning from Sprint.

To carrier switch you would need to flash the U1 firmware, then insert the carrier of your choice [not Sprint] then set up device, after download the latest U firmware which is 3SARI4 and flash it.
Do not flash the USERDATA unless it is for the carrier you switching to

You could try flashing the unlocked version of the firmware, but that only changes the boot animation to a different one. With my sprint phone it went to the stock Samsung one after flashing the firmware for the G965U1
Otherwise no way I know of to customize it. Things like that require root access which we don't have.

Just keep in mind flashing the G965U1 firmware may cause certain sprint features to not work.
The G965U1 is from the non carrier branded phone so it is the most generically compatible firmware. Any carrier specific additions added to the firmware by the carrier wouldn't be present.
Like for example the tmobile firmware has the video calling built into the dialer. With the g965U1 firmware it is not present.

It's there.
If your using Samfirm app to download the firmware you search for the model SM-G965U1 and then XAA for the region.
Using sammobile you search for the model SM-G965U1 and then at the drop down menu select "(Unknown) XAA" from the available options.

The only thing I can see causing the issue is the bootloader version. You can only flash firmware with the same bootloader version or higher then what is currently installed on your phone.
To locate the bootloader version look at your baseband version. Start at the very right hand side count left 5 characters inwards. The number that is present would be the bootloader version.
Using the example below the bootloader version would be number 5
G965USQS5CSEA

I have a SM-G965U1 S9+ unlocked phone purchased from Samsung. I recently downloaded an OTA update. I lost the ability to use the hotspot feature. It has always worked in the past. I downloaded Odin and the last version of the firmware that had full capability to use the hotspot feature. I tried installing and it failed.
Is there a way for me to rollback the latest update?

Depending on your binary ( Bootloader ) version you can download firmware and flash with odin.

XAA doesn't tell me much

My bootloader says RP SWREV: B9(2,2,2,9,2) K9 S9
I tried to flash Android 10 G965U1UEU7DTA5 and Android 9 G965U1UES7CSK2. I downloaded them from sammobile. I entered my model number G-965U1 and since I have an unlocked phone that already had the CSC code XAA for USA I chose the list of XAA firmware. I tried the closest date to when I got the phone and one other. Sorry if I don't know exactly what I am talking about. Looking at the versions I downloaded they look to be for bootloader version 7 not 9 is that right?

Your are on bit ( bootloader ) ver 9 you are trying flash firmware with ver 7. You can not downgrade firmware. You need to find ver 9 or higher ( 5th number/letter from right of firmware file name ) to be able to flash.
You could try a pc app called frija to download latest version. You have to search here on xda as i can't post links at the monemt.

Well I was able to flash the new firmware. However my hotspot still does not work. Is there anything else I can try? I have another phone same model and its hotspot works fine but that one did not get the most recent OTA update.

Sorry my mistake. I forgot about your hotspot issue. Frija download latest firmware only.
If your on G965u1eu9fue4 ( problaby updated to G965u1es9fug2 ) the early version before your update is G965u1es9fud1.
Try downloading this and see if it works. You should be able to flash anything with a bit 9 firmware ( 5th number from right of firmware name )
From sammobile firmware for ATT
Download Samsung Galaxy S9+ SM-G965U1 ATT USA (AT&T) firmware
