I have a question, did anyone use qualcom izat? is it more accurate and more battery friendly than normal gps or location using network?

Yes I'm using it it helps with indoor locations like in malls or big buildings. It is battery friendly yes.
My understanding is that it is to supplement regular GPS not replace it. You use both.

I use it, i'm not sure how i feel about regularly sharing my location data with qualcom in addition to agps/location accuracy with google (that uses network and bluetooth in addition to gps).
I did some research, i'm not sure how it goes about increasing location accuracy in addition to agps. Not a lot of documentation on it other than a few qualcom marketing blurbs.

Agreed. I haven't found a use for it.

aGPS vs. Hardware GPS

OK folks, I've loaded up the DCD Rom found here (version 3.3.4) and I now have a working GPS.
I noticed something, however, and that's that the GPS drains the battery fast. Reading some of the other forums, I've heard that Assisted GPS (one that uses the towers rather than the hardware in the phone) uses less battery power, but on the downside, is not as accurate.
Since I don't always need an accurate position, I was wondering if it's possible to switch between the two GPS versions.
Then it occurred to me - how does one know if I really even AM using the hardware GPS.
So.....
Here's some questions for some of you who know better than others....
1. How can we even tell if we are using the hardware GPS vs. the aGPS?
2. Is it possible to switch between the 2 without having to re-flash, or get into QPST?
I would think that this would be very desirable to switch between the 2.
.....and here's what I have....
Verizon XV6800
dcd Rom 3.3.4
Radio version 3.42.02
Thanks!
Gps does about no drain on the battery. Programs like garmin that run constantly using the gps drain the battery. Agps is great for fast accurate fixes. Standalone gps is great for accurate but slower fixes.
I would use agps if you have a data plan. The speed is the only difference. Just so you know agps pings the tower for your location and tells the phone which satellite to find first which is what makes it faster.
gps
seems to me I already know the Ans to this one, but I'll ask anyway.
I have a data block, that means no GPS for me with the 6800 Correct?
or is there a program I can load?

No, I think you should still be able to use "hardware only" mode.
yes you can use standalone gps. I do.
drewcam888 thanks for the help... but one last Question. is there a program needed that you would suggest?
*Edit* I had searched GPS and didn't find much for some reason, but now I do. I'll do my research sorry to ask, but if you have a suggestion I'll gladly take it.
I suggest quickgps.

[Q] GPS Acquisition -- Is It Incredibly Slow?

On my Nexus One, GPS would acquire location within 50-100' accuracy within 15-30 seconds of being activated in Google Maps or the Instamapper.com GPS Tracker App.
On the Thunderbolt, it is taking on average about 2 MINUTES for initial location acquisition.
Has anyone else noticed this terrible lag in GPS?
mine takes about 30 seconds to lock. this is WAY better than my vibrant which NEVER locked be happy lol
Only inside my work building. At my vehicle.. Not bad
Outdoors I lock in less than 15 seconds....
My initial GPS locks were incredibly slow
Initially the first few locks were slow, but now it's not a problem.
Mine is very fast.. just about as fast as my Garmin
Mine locks within seconds in my house, pretty much immediately outside.
In addition to having your GPS powered on, make sure you have Google and VZW location services enabled.
Immediately

No problem.
As I understand it:
Standalone GPS = The actual GPS antenna.
VZW location services = Uses verizon towers to get a general location
Google location services = Uses wireless networks to get a general location (more accurate than VZW services).
Once the general location is obtained, it can get a GPS lock quickly.

GPS on Note

I heard a rumor that there isn't GPS on the note, does anyone who has this phone know this for sure??
That rumor is extremely inaccurate. The Note has probably one of the best GPS setups I've seen on a cell phone. It locks swiftly, even indoors.

awesome thanks for the quick reply
Not only that, but it has TWO GPS receivers, GPS and Glonass.
I used it on a hike yesterday. Drove well into the mountains far out of cell range. I could not believe how absolutely outstanding the gps was. Not only for the drive, which Google Nav took me exactly to the lat\long requested, but along the hike as well to track my distance. Just amazing!
Been using my Vibrant fo r a year or so while cycling. It was notorious for crappy GPS signal even with a plethora of "fixes". So when I started using this I was astounded by the fast lock time and amazing pinpoint accuracy. OP rumor is absurdly inaccurate, probably started by one of those apple fans while standing in line
You should probably slap the source of this rumor swiftly with a good backhand. Seriously...who would start such a rumor? As the others have said, the combination of GPS and GLONASS antennas gives the Note one of the best, if not the best GPS system in a cell phone that is mass produced today.
Coming from a Captivate, which all but seemed like it didin't even have a GPS, this is a breath of fresh air. Saves me from having to take my Garmin on my next trip.

Any phone GPS is better than the crap Samsung built into Captivate/Vibrant/Galaxy S.

I was just using Google Nav and My Tracks. Didn't seem phased at all by being out of cell range and relying solely on the satellites. Seemed that cell phones I had in the past relied quite a bit on cell towers for accurate location, however this one does not from my experience yesterday.

Since the Note includes the GLONASS antenna, you don't need cell service, stock.

GPS by itself doesn't really require cell service (that's why standalone GPS works). Having the cell service helps speed up the initial lock on satellites. Once locked, it doesn't require any cell service.
Google Nav will cache the route data once your setup the destination.
The GPS on the NOTE is by far the best GPS experience I've had with any phone/GPS unit. It literally locks in on your location in seconds!

You mean GPS Navigation? Many apps have offline capability.. I use Locus for general "gps" activities (hiking, geocaching, etc), and there are several offline navigation apps on the market, but I don't use any offhand.

Technically, cell service has very little to do with it, aGPS downloads data every few days, it doesn't poll data constantly. It could as well do it from wifi.
Agreed, cell service has little to do with the GPS position data, but with apps like Google Maps you won't get any map data (although you can turn caching on to get around that problem).
That said, yes, there are some assisted GPS techniques which use wifi and cell phone tower data to get an approximate location. But the real GPS receiver doesn't use that stuff at all.
The Note is actually capable of reaching out to 59 satellites worldwide. In my area, KY, it snags about 20 on average even when under fast acceleration from a dead stop.
Vast improvement over my Cappy.

So, you get faster location with gsm data than WiFi? It is built so. That's what I understood from there.

Better for Battery Life: Wifi or HSDPA

Hi all, Blue here,
I am using a slightly modified rom made bsaed on the hktw rom made by a local. I am just wondering if wifi or data takes more battery generally?

2g<wifi<3g<4g for battery drain, or at least that's what i've found from my side, with 2 g taking up the least battery, and 3g/4g taking up the most.

On the Droid Razr (and infact any Android device) wifi uses MUCH less power and resources than HSDPA/3G+ services. The reason being that the gain needed on the radios part to receive a packet via wifi is (generally) much less than over a cellular connection, due to the quality of the signal being much higher. It hasn't got to work as hard to get a good set of packets to work with. Your phone will be working like a mad thing trying to buffer a YouTube video on HSDPA - dealing with massive packet loss and syphoning the 'good' data from the 'bad' data - whereas on wifi with much less packet loss and a higher rate of that 'good' data being received, it can relax a little.
My advice on battery life - download a data "toggle" widget and place it on an unused home screen. Whenever you are not using any mobile data services turn it off using this widget. Leave wifi on only when at home/a location where you know you will be able to use it. Turn it off when you go out. When you want to use mobile data when wifi is not available, just toggle it on. I get 3+ days of always-on use using this method.

Thanks guys, coz I notice that it seems like when I am using wifi, the batter goes faster. Maybe it's because when I am connected to wifi I use it more often? Thanks again

It could well be. Or if you have applications that are configured to only sync/update when on wifi, this will naturally put your phone to more use than if say you only used 3G/HSDPA for checking email.

When you say you have compared them with 3G , it means the phone's data sync causing this problem is out of question. As in both cases ( wifi and 3G) the phone would connect to data based on the set intervals.
Possible cause: if you have multiple wifi sources near your devices and you have granted them access, here your phone constantly tries to connect to the best available wifi . If this is true , just use wifi managers available on Play store or remove access to unwanted wifi routers/access points.
