Hi dears,
I would share here our analysis/solution about the way to remap the Google Assistant button with other features... e.g. the camera.
Thanks for your collaboration.
I like the double tap for Lens. I like the hold down for voice. I wish the single tap would take you to Google Discover feed though. Seems like tapping it and holding it down pretty much do the same thing.
I'd like to disable it altogether because my big hands keep activating it.
Or maybe a Double-Tap to activate it (or any other programmed App).
Thanks, I'll be watching closely.
Disable Google Assistant key ALL MODELS
Here is where disable the Google Assistant key
I agree. I like the HOLD to open assistant. I love the double tap to LENS. I ****ing hate single press to open assistant. I constantly hit it on accident.
Disabled
I had it disabled from the start. It's an insult (as always) to force functions on you without options. I never use assistant and never will. It's a simple thing for Lg and/or Google to give us plenty of options, in this case, to remap to anything we like.

Someone started digging in to this on the G7... Let's keep an eye on it!

Important Note!
It is possible to change the assistant button to launch the Amazon Alexa app.
So maybe it would be possible to get a custom app to show up in the selecton menu.
(See attached screenshots, they're german though.)
Sadly enough,

Alright... I should have tried that before pointing it out... In fact if you set it to Alexa, hitting the Assistant Button will prompt you to change it back to Google Assistant instead of either launching Alexa or just bringing up Google Assistant... Which basically makes the button completely pointless...
Has there ever been a more pointless hardware button than the 'Google Assistant' button?
Root/Xposed is possibly the solution.
Is it possible to remap the button by using Google Play Apps like this ones?

Maybe some LG product manager reads all this threads about us, wanting the "Google Assistant Button" to be remappable to any other app. But maybe not...
Please don´t just write here about your anger, but start doing something more. Help LG to see, that there is room for improvement.
It is possible to contact LG via an email form. If they got an email from everybody in all this threads - maybe they´ll start thinking about changing something.
And please keep in mind, that one customer complaining means many more (probably thousands) thinking the same thing.
I wrote to them and choosed "Product Operation" at the "Type of inquiry" field and asked how to change the button remapping. If you want to write to them too - here are the links to the feedback forms:

german -> https://www.lg.com/de/support/kontakt/chat-email/email

No!

PSA the pro version of Button Mapper now supports the LG Google Assistant button... not sure if you need root. I can confirm working great on stock rooted Pie with lots of options for the button functionality. It will cost you 5 bucks though...
Confirming

Would love to remap it to play/pause for a music player. This is coming from someone who still uses mp3 players though.

This isn't a too much of a big deal, but curiosity kills me. Since the SGS 2 looks like it lacks a dedicated search button, I wonder if it has a substitute?
What I appreciated on my Nexus One is the search button which is excellent to Google something on the fly and to activate Voice Search. So I'm just wondering if the SGS 2 will have something to generate a quick search or if the U.S. variants will have search buttons?
like the first galaxy S i9000 , you will be able to long press the menu button to simulate the search button
And for the voice search double pressing the home button will do the trick as seen on the vids floating the web
Search seems like the biggest waste of.a button ever. Never missed it on the i9000 at all.

I never used my search-button as it is now, but if the menu-button long-press is assigned to search, how do you switch on and off the on-screen keyboard?
On other android-devices a long-press of the menu-button will activate/deactivate the on-screen keyboard.

I have a Hero, never ever have I had to long press the menu button to get the keyboard up/down. It comes up when it's needed, it disappears with a press of the "hide keyboard" button or the back button!

The hide keyboard button is only on HTCs Sense keyboard no? It's certainly not there on the stock android keyboard.
I've had instances where the keyboard blocked part of the screen and if I had pressed the back button the program would've closed/gone to a previous screen and I wouldn't have been able to do what I wanted without pulling down the keyboard with a long press of the menu-button.
It might not be a big problem or something that occurs often, but it can be annoying and that's why I ask.

You just hit the "Back" button to hide the keyboard
As he just explained, in certain programs (very few) pressing the "back" button to switch off the on-screen keyboard can quit the progrmam you are actually using. But samsung made a very neat trick for that since the first version of the Galaxy S i9000, just swipe down from the upper part of the keyboard to the bottom and the keyboard will disappear, no need for a specific button. I find it very intuitive personnaly, and in the same situation you can also swipe left or right in the keyboard area to switch from letters to numbers view back and forth.
That is an excellent feature. Do any other phones do this?
I don t know any other phone that do so natively, but there is some third party keyboards that copied that (just like CyanogenMod and everyone else copied the wifi, bluetooth etc toggles in the notification bar) "smart keyboard" or "better keyboard" I think.
Meh, I love the design but I love my search button; using Vlingo, I can hold the button and tell my phone to do whatever I want, much better than tgr default Google voice command app.

That's no big deal, you can easily fix it with a third party app.
And btw it's a matter of time for Android 2.4 Ice cream to come.. and there are rumors that it won't need buttons at all...

Doubtful... Why would I want screen real estate taken up with buttons? It works on a tablet, It would be nonsensical on a phone.
samsung hasn't actually officially confirmed if there will be a 2.4 update...

They haven't confirmed that the SGS will get Gingerbread either yet I'm running XXJVK which is Android 2.3.3.
Not sure if you guys are aware, but if you keep the menu button pressed for a couple of seconds it becomes a search button?

I'm aware of this, just when I tried out pressing the buttons haha
But I've read this once, cause it works the same way in SGS I as far as I can remember
Awesome! Thanks!
Does that mean however there will be no "one button" way to get to voice search?

i see no equivalent for this on the galaxy, am i missing something?
but how can I add an installed app to the researchable item list of "Google search"?

Hey guys... before people start jumping the gun, I know all about remapping the bixby button to another app.
What I would like to ask, is there any way to remap the Power Button to an app/action and the Bixby button to become the Power Button ? (without root)
I ask because I usually have my phone in my left pocket and it's just easier to use the thumb button for power rather than trying to find the power button on the other side of the phone.
It would have been nice if they gave us the option to assign specific abilities to individual buttons, for left and right handed users.
Thee is an app on Google Play called "bxactions" that might do what you are asking
The 'pro' version of the app does a lot more than the free version, which still allows some button remapping upto a point
There are quite a few Bixby button remappers out on Google Play Store, I've trued some of them and 'bxactions' seems to offer the better choices

Yeah, I found the bixby button remappers.
Haven't found any power button remappers though
Remapping of Bixby key comes to Note8. Samsung pushed update in Galaxy Store.
"remapping" consist to select if you want press 1 or 2 times the button for bixby opening....is not a real remapping.
version 3.0.02.6 installed on my phone right now but I couldn't find such an option.
Nice I got it and couldn't be more happy, update through galaxy store you will update 3 new package
Yup, working great.
Single press opens Google, double Bixby
I've always used bxactions to do this, but the inbuilt remapping now seems much quicker to open Google
Can't find the upgrade anywhere... can anyone get me some more detailed steps to finding the update? TIA
If i swipe left to right, opening bixby home and it hasn't this option. But if i press bixby button opening bixby voice and it has this option.

You can now remap either the single press or the double press to open a quick command, or any other app (such as camera). How is that not "real remapping?"

I had to go into the bixby voice setting then to the About Bixby Voice button at the bottom of that screen and it had the update button there, not in the Galaxy Store.
Hope this helps.

Because i'm talking about the first update where there is no option to remap single or double press.
Launching an app is nice and all, but i would preffer if i could just put the phone on vibration mode -on or off - but i guess this is not coming so..

@drmilosh
Actually you can map almost any command to the button. Choose from different standard quick commands of define your own, choose from settings...
Playing around, I could set phone to vibrate... As long as you could Bixby to do something, you can map it to the button...

Is there a way Remap the buttoned for Google as it's not needed as you can old the white dot on screen down for the same result.
Just did a quick Google search. There are a number of remap apps available for doing this. The one featured in xda is called assistant remap or something similar.
working for me
I used button remapper app (or button remapper pro)
and it works great
you have to first disAble the "Google Asssitant Button" from settings
then run the button remapper app
in my cases it asked me to ad some adb permissions via an app tool
but it is working great
now I have
double click - camera opens
single click - take a picture

I was actually going to ask if it could become the camera button. Something perfect on the Lumia's that im surprised never took off on Droid phones.
Thank you for this.
Works great.
Not working
Hi,
I have few Camera apps installed, it works on the Google camera port and most (except Camera PX)
https://forum.xda-developers.com/nokia-7-2/themes/gcam-nokia-7-2-google-camera-port-balu-t3981019
also I had to buy the "button remapper pro" app
since the regular version does not have the action "camera shutter" available
other than that, it works well for me
