Is there a way Remap the buttoned for Google as it's not needed as you can old the white dot on screen down for the same result.
Just did a quick Google search. There are a number of remap apps available for doing this. The one featured in xda is called assistant remap or something similar.
working for me
I used button remapper app (or button remapper pro)
and it works great
you have to first disAble the "Google Asssitant Button" from settings
then run the button remapper app
in my cases it asked me to ad some adb permissions via an app tool
but it is working great
now I have
double click - camera opens
single click - take a picture

I was actually going to ask if it could become the camera button. Something perfect on the Lumia's that im surprised never took off on Droid phones.
Thank you for this.
Works great.
Not working
Hi,
I have few Camera apps installed, it works on the Google camera port and most (except Camera PX)
https://forum.xda-developers.com/nokia-7-2/themes/gcam-nokia-7-2-google-camera-port-balu-t3981019
also I had to buy the "button remapper pro" app
since the regular version does not have the action "camera shutter" available
other than that, it works well for me

I'd like to remap the camera button to launch the voice recorder when suspended, but available as shutter button when in the camera app. Can this button be context sensitive like this?
I found a key mapping in the /system directory, and saw a keycode with the word CAMERA next to it. Is it just a matter of replacing CAMERA with the appropriate voice recorder binary?
Thanks!
I don't believe there is any context sensitivity - however, you can map the camera half-press to the shutter, and a full-press to a voice recorder?
I had to remap my half-press camera button to the "BACK" action when my capacitive "back" button broke on my streak. You'll have to get root, and afterwards you can modify /system/usr/keylayouts/{qwerty,surf}.kl I believe.
Key 52 is the halfpress I think.. 52, or 59. Dig around the .kl files and search for "FOCUS" and "CAMERA" to see which key IDs map that button.
btw, i grew up near/in cerritos from 1986-98. I miss that area very much, esp. during those times. /me waves

Thanks! Am I right that I would replace that action with the binary name of the voice recorder? Or is it the apk name?
Wife said we "had"to move to Cerritos, so we did.
I have done this same thing.
It is very easy to do with the Tasker application.
I have set mine so that when im in the car (with my own car mode set on) that the camera button brings up a choice of the dialer, call log or contacts. yet it still functions perfectly when in the camera app.

Please describe step-by-step what you did! My ROM is 2.1 (o2), 8105 build.
I tried tasker but I dont see how to remap the Camera (FOCUS) button.
I changed an event (hardware - CAMERA Button) and added an action (load App) then applied.
The notification says, no profie activated? Why?

Hey Kertong, needing to do same thing. Replaced my screen and keypad now only performs menu. I am in shell trying to find the right action. Can you describe what you edited the .kl to?
Option 1
2 apps combined together can remap camera
button remapper - remap camera to search fn
launcher key to set search to any app u want
Option 2
Use tasker
Tried Tasker, great program just couldn't get it to work right, but will be a great application when I get it all setup.
My resolution.
Instead of using applications...
I did 'adb shell'
went to /system/usr/keylayout
did 'vi surf_keypad.kl'
And edited key 212 which is Camera, with Back.
Although now the softpad doesn't function as Menu only. Atleast I can go back now.!

I never use the camera button on my streak so I want to change it so it would be useful to me (maybe locking auto rotate or assigning a task killer program to it for instant memory). Any have any ideas on how to do this and/or do you want to change the action of your camera button?
You can use buttonremapper to reassign the camera key (but it will no longer be a camera key, even if you are using the camera app or something like vignette). You need root for this- I have it as media pause/play
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850464
you can use 2 apps to make use of both the keys
1. Button remapper
2. then launch key
I use 'tasker' , it have camera button clicked event .

EDIT : can u post the mod that you did
I was wondering if anyone knows a way to change the function of any of the four hardware keys at the button of the device.
For example, I do no use nor like the search key. So I was wondering if there was a way to change it so when I tap on it the applications drawer would open instead.
Any help would be awesome, thanks
I was going to suggest Button Remapper, until I saw that you wanted to open your app drawer with the search button. I used it to make the search button duplicate the menu button action for a while, but ended up changing it back.

I don't have a ton of experience with Tasker, but you might be able to get Tasker to do it.
I will check it out. Thank you
Yea button remapper best i could think of i use it turn my search key into the camera button

Looks like there is no option to change to open the app drawer. Worth a shot

Sorry to raise an older thread, however, I am curious if you needed to do anything other than install / run the remapper app?
I am trying to get it to work, to no avail. It opens, I see the options, I change the functions from search to camera, save, apply. After I reboot, it still does the search, no camera. The remapper program also sees the 'saved' functions of camera, but still no luck.
Sort of just been pondering about how useless the capacitive search button is to me (and probably a lot of other people) and how I'm a little envious of the physical home button on the International Note, then I came across an article about how a HTC rom dev had switched their capacitive multitask button to perform the function: menu due to app incompatibility. Now I didn't know capacitive buttons could have their function switched but it kind of had me flirting with the idea of how insanely epic a menu/home/back/multitask capacitive layout would be on Ice Cream Sandwich. I wouldn't be jealous of the International Note's physical home button at all if that were the case. I thought this was a little day dream of mine worth sharing. From what I've read it's just a file in system/usr that needs to be edited, I took a quick look but haven't quite figured out which it is yet.
What about you guys, do you like the capacitive search function or would you like to see it something else?
inb4: yo dawg u can just hold down home
multitask with long-press for search would work for me. maybe there is something in the play store than can do this
The galaxy tab has a button remapping app. I used mine to screen off.

I love the search button, especially since it's app-aware for context. I see your inb4, but can you explain why reassigning the search button is better than just holding down home? Is it just a second of time you're trying to recover?
I have my long pressed search button mapped to an app called "AltTabApps" which gives me a longer list of recent/installed apps. Long pressing the home button only gives you 6 recent used apps, which sometimes isn't enough.
I think the button does enough multitasking. Short press to search, then long press to voice search or voice talk"hi galaxy" control... I like the voice search because you don't have to access the s voice controls. You could just simply long press search then select voice search and say text blank, "come over after 3" and it will do it... So having there separate functions under one button works for me great.

I wanted to do this for a while now and finally I got around to it. Basically all I did was to replace search key 217 in system/usr/keylayout/generic.kl to APP_SWITCH. Rebooted and now I have search key remapped to recent apps.

Mine is showing 13 recent apps right now. Have seen more than that before.
I use the search button extensively. Wouldn't want to change it.
Edit: just saw how old that post was.

Id love to switch the search button for S voice, and set long press to nothing. Then just tap the search button and it opens s voice.

If you have the Google Now apk installed, the search button launches it.
Hi dears,
I would share here our analysis/solution about the way to remap the Google Assistant button with other features... e.g. the camera.
Thanks for your collaboration.
I like the double tap for Lens. I like the hold down for voice. I wish the single tap would take you to Google Discover feed though. Seems like tapping it and holding it down pretty much do the same thing.
I'd like to disable it altogether because my big hands keep activating it.
Or maybe a Double-Tap to activate it (or any other programmed App).
Thanks, I'll be watching closely.
Disable Google Assistant key ALL MODELS
Here is where disable the Google Assistant key
I agree. I like the HOLD to open assistant. I love the double tap to LENS. I ****ing hate single press to open assistant. I constantly hit it on accident.
Disabled
I had it disabled from the start. It's an insult (as always) to force functions on you without options. I never use assistant and never will. It's a simple thing for Lg and/or Google to give us plenty of options, in this case, to remap to anything we like.

Important Note!
It is possible to change the assistant button to launch the Amazon Alexa app.
So maybe it would be possible to get a custom app to show up in the selecton menu.
(See attached screenshots, they're german though.)
Sadly enough,

Alright... I should have tried that before pointing it out... In fact if you set it to Alexa, hitting the Assistant Button will prompt you to change it back to Google Assistant instead of either launching Alexa or just bringing up Google Assistant... Which basically makes the button completely pointless...
Has there ever been a more pointless hardware button than the 'Google Assistant' button?
Root/Xposed is possibly the solution.

Maybe some LG product manager reads all this threads about us, wanting the "Google Assistant Button" to be remappable to any other app. But maybe not...
Please don´t just write here about your anger, but start doing something more. Help LG to see, that there is room for improvement.
It is possible to contact LG via an email form. If they got an email from everybody in all this threads - maybe they´ll start thinking about changing something.
And please keep in mind, that one customer complaining means many more (probably thousands) thinking the same thing.
I wrote to them and choosed "Product Operation" at the "Type of inquiry" field and asked how to change the button remapping. If you want to write to them too - here are the links to the feedback forms:

german -> https://www.lg.com/de/support/kontakt/chat-email/email

No!

PSA the pro version of Button Mapper now supports the LG Google Assistant button... not sure if you need root. I can confirm working great on stock rooted Pie with lots of options for the button functionality. It will cost you 5 bucks though...
