I mentioned it briefly in another post and searched the forum - but found nothing.
I am talking about the Sweep Panorama mode of the Xperia-S camera. Not the '3D' versions, the 'normal' (2D) sweep panorama - the last icon in the first ('Shooting mode') menu. I tend to experience problems with it and am not sure if everyone has observed the same.
In Sweep Panorama mode, whatever direction of sweeping I choose, I tend to get error messages that either:
- I am sweeping too fast, or
- I am sweeping too slow, or
- just 'Picture could not be taken' with no explanation why.
I need to mention that I have plenty of sweeping experience on my previous Xperia X10 and on a Sony Nex camera - so I am sweeping really smoothly and at medium speed. Are the phone position sensors and accelerometers too sensitive? (And the camera software inadequately set to interpret them?).
This is happening in roughly 3 out of 4 attempts (or even 4 out of 5) making the function hardly usable and very annoying.
Ironically, while the X10 had no such function, I was using a 'beta' version (called Panorama Beta) as a standalone app, offered by Sony Ericsson on the Android Market (now Play Shop). Despite being a beta, that app worked flawlessly and never gave me such problems. I have many excellent panoramas from that, and some have even won photographic awards. I particularly like the 'vertorama' mode, i.e. vertical sweeping. With the camera in 'landscape' mode, this captures a square-ish rectangle - with a wider field of view and more scene detail, at highest possible resolution. To capture a square (or 4:3 'portrait') vertorama, you need to stop sweeping early - and the Beta app had a 'Stop' button.
The new version integrated within the Xperia camera has no 'Stop' and expects you to make very long sweeps. I tried to stop by pressing the on-screen or physical shutter button, but that produces the above errors - or a very long and narrow rectangle, half of it greyed and the other half a blurry, low resolution panorama.
Disappointed with the function, I wanted to use the standalone Panorama Beta app, but it doesn't appear in the Market. Is it withdrawn by Sony? (As no longer beta and included with newer firmware)? Or is it only not appearing for the Xperia-S - presuming you already have it?
I tried taking a backed-up .APK from the X10 and 'restoring' (installing) it on the X-S, but it does not install. The install process starts normally, but when the blue 'thermometer' finishes, the message is: 'The app did not install' - with no further explanation. I imagine it discovers the newer version already installed and avoids a conflict with it?
All other 'panorama' apps on the market are much worse, from primitive to utter rubbish. They are either not 'sweep' and ask you to take multiple separate shots, asking you to manually align them to on-screen guide marks, before running a 'stitch' operation (resulting in very poor blends with obvious fault lines). Or they shoot relatively smoothly, but the end image is very lo-res, small in size and out of focus. Among all of them the Photaf app was closest to 'working' but it's only horizontal and stitches are a hit-and-miss (most of the time a miss - too obvious).
Can others, please, share experiences with the Sweep Panorama mode in the Xperia-S camera? Does it work for you or have you got similar problems? Has anyone found solutions?
Any suggestions how to make the Beta standalone app install and work? (The new one isn't standalone, so I am not sure I'll be able to uninstall it, even when I root the phone).
Thanks for any info!
The new Sweep Panorama sucks big time indeed. There's a modified APK of the beta floating around, I've been using it on my Arc S/Neo for ages, works just fine!
Don't have my S yet, so can't try it, but you can give it a go:

Thanks a lot - this is the same Panorama 'Beta' I loved on my X10, works well on the X-S. I'll now use it as main pano tool and hope Sony will fix their in-camera version with one of the firmware updates.
Not sure if they read (or at least scour with spider-bots) this and similar sites for insight what needs fixing - if I knew a contact point I'd write to them but won't spend time researching their feedback channels...
The S camera rocks otherwise, wish you to get yours soon!
I'll let them know whenever I get the chance

You can try both
I'm running these B12 , but the kernel it's driving me nuts it's not letting the phone go into deep sleep ... Any fix for that ? Can you guys share some battery stats
What's the difference between them?
I just flashed this version on my U since I thought it would be more suited, coming from the U beta program rather than G.
So far I have noticed out of the box this gcam camera port seems to work whereas on the B01 you need to install Nfounds patch to get even v4.4 of gcam to work.
Biggest negative so far is much the same as the Nougat rom on the U version and something I believe Nfound was trying to work on before he released the ROM; Thats localization issues, you only have a few languages to select from so that means for an app like google maps you can't use an english UK computer voice as the phone thinks you are always in the US. Same if you wanted to use a computer voice to pronounce street names in any language for that matter. Changing the text to speech values in the rom do not affect this as maps uses separate info now.
This has an impact outside of maps too, with some apps defaulting to you being in the US regardless of your current location. It would be lovely if other locales could be added just the same as the Euro B01 ROM.
Apart from that I can't see any differences really, the power manager looks more modern and up to date and there seems to be an option to customise mi-pop, can't remember if that was there before.
I still don't know what to make of this craze right now of HDR+, I've done several tests with the stock camera app and to me when I use HDR+ the image just looks the same without HDR. HDR however looks better. With Gcam and my limited testing its different though, HDR and HDR+ both look better than non-HDR.
I am a sceptic and my guess would be this, despite the apps having HDR+ they aren't working properly with it. Gcam when you used HDR+ or HDR+ enhanced is just taking a standard HDR picture and the stock camera is broken when using HDR+ and only takes a non-HDR picture whilst using standard HDR on the stock app does work. Maybe someone can help me with my findings?

What do people think?
Edit# also noticed that each time you first open Magisk it crashes, works second time each time though and passes safety net fine.
Edit2# Magisk v 16 just broke for me after a few reboots, v16.4 seems to work better.
Major issue so far is system isn't writable any more, had this issue a while back with Nougat and back then it was related to the bootsect.
Edit3#
Code:
su
reboot disemmcwp
does not make system writable either, just the same as Nougat with this problem.

HDR+ enhanced lowers shutter speed so as to capture more light. Downside is you have to stay still longer while taking the photo as it takes more time to capture it.
HDR+ is almost instant with fast shutter speed. Tradeback is lower quality, noticeable mainly in very low light.
I use HDR+ almost always and HDR+ enhanced in very low light situations. That's the only time where it makes a big difference IMO.
If you always want best quality just pick HDR+ enhanced.

@Victor13f perhaps put it in the OP
just installed this rom coming from a non stock non rooted phone.
Having 3 issues
-When the device is rebooted it goes in to an error message "Your device software can't be checked for corruption. please lock the bootloader.","error g+xo/ABH"/ and that it will "boot in 5 seconds if no button is pressed". If volume button is pressed it wil go in TWRP otherwise it will just boot up Android fine. Not sure what I did wrong.
-The onscreen navigation buttons keep appearing, i disabled them in settings -features, most of the time they are not there but they keep coming back
-Cannot find Daydream in the appstore, guessing it does not detect my device as daydream supported
thats are no issues. all is fine
open bootlader = corrupt message
buttons come back of you swipe up from bottom
no daydream support

The unlocked bootloader message is normal. Still haven't found a working method to remove it. Do not try any flashasble zips for different android versions as they can brick your phone.
The on screen buttons I've never had that problem it I'm running the EU version B01. Can't help you with that one.
Daydream doesn't run on betas therefore not showing on the play store or showing as unsupported. Download the APK from a reputable website and it should work flawlessly.
VR services was already installed, sideloaded daydream & daydream keyboard but as daydream starts up it says device is unsupported with a link and a close button.
I already found out about the /system/etc/permissions/handheld_core_hardware.xml where you can add lines to make it think that it supports VR but it gets overwritten after reboot back to default.

Okay, I didn't know about that. I read somewhere that the only problem was downloading the APK. It could be something as easy to fix as the Magisk not passing safetynet. Let's see if anyone releases a fix.

Weird indeed as I saw that someone on the EU version did get daydream to work. I think I will try the EU version.
Just found out something new, the controls from my wired headset is acting up, it only activates voice control instead of controlling next/previous and stop/start music. Not tested yet if I can answer a phone call with those controls.
Is it possible to hide the carrier name in the status bar?
Wanted to share with you some experience with the very nice phone from Xiaomi, and my first impressions are:
- Very nice look, excellent finish.
- Nice value and really high performance.
- Speedy unlock - either fingerprint or face - do not need to touch anything to get the phone unlocked via face recognition, however to enable face unlock I had to change the region of the phone to get it in options.
- very decent battery
But...
- Google assistant does not support "OK Goggle unlock" and voice control (seems not to work with all MIUI phones?)
- Widevine L3 - so NO HD Netflix or Amazon video
- Wide notch - is this the problem - anyway no notifications on top of display - so I have to pull down on top to see what is going on..?
- AMOLED display vastly inferior to Galaxy display - very washed out videos in direct compare
- Till now it seems for me impossible to implement the ported stock dialers (phone) to get the look and feel of stock Android.
- Camera disappointed me - cannot understand the DxoMark rating of 99 ??? In direct comparison with my Galaxy S8, very poor in low light, and despite OIS very shaky videos - Xiaomi desperately need EIS implementation.
- It was very tricky to implement multilingual setup, some bugs in MIUI perhaps.
- I have Xiaomi BT headset, but the sound paired with MI8 on this unit is too low. Also the call volume is a little to soft, wished the earpiece would be louder.
So, as I've stated much more negative comments, seems as not satisfied with the phone, what is not true, but these observations are really there and making some problems in real life.
And after a lot of playing I still do not know how to change the default icon look on the phone (needed for ported pixel launcher), since when applying different themes only the MIUI launcher displays new icons.
Any comments from other users?

Just a summary from another Mi8 owner:
- Google assistant does not support "OK Goggle unlock" and voice control (seems not to work with all MIUI phones?)
you complain about "ok google" doesn't work on a Chinese smartphone? Really?
- Widevine L3 - so NO HD Netflix or Amazon video
Widevine L3 was never supported on a xiaomi smartphone, nor a Mi6 nor a Mi5s. Why should a chinese phone support DRM from Netflix or amazon?
- Wide notch - is this the problem - anyway no notifications on top of display - so I have to pull down on top to see what is going on..?
did you buy the device without having seen it? Notch was known ....
- AMOLED display vastly inferior to Galaxy display - very washed out videos in direct compare
In my opinion, I love the display, it hasn't an exaggerated saturation as Samsung and its lot better than a Oneplus5T Display.
- Till now it seems for me impossible to implement the ported stock dialers (phone) to get the look and feel of stock Android.
There is no Guarantee to install google phone on every smartphone. Just for me, i've installed xiaomi.eu rom and can install the google phone dialer offically from google play store without limitations.
- Camera disappointed me - cannot understand the DxoMark rating of 99 ??? In direct comparison with my Galaxy S8, very poor in low light, and despite OIS very shaky videos - Xiaomi desperately need EIS implementation.
Can't really understand this point, i've compared this cam round about two weeks with a Huawei P20 Pro and JUST FOR ME: the Mi8 cam is better, the AI on the Huawei device is horrible and in low light situations i can't see no advantages too. Maybe the P20 pro is better in some conditions BUT compared with the price the MI8 is more better !
Here is my comparison of P20 Pro and Mi8, everything on AUTO and just Point and shoot:

Xiaomi MI A2 is a really good example why "Ok Google" works, it doesn't run Xiaomis Miui. It runs Android One, its a stock android fork and it would be a misstake when "Okay Google" wont work here....
Try the camera with xiaomi.eu MIUI 10 Stable. MIUI Global for Mi 8 is a big joke with a lot of problems and missing features. The DXO review was made with the Chaina ROM, that is why it shoots good/great.
I'm a happy Mi 8 user with the latest stable xiaomi.eu. After 1 month of using it: Mi 8 is not the best phone, but for this price, it's unbeatable right now and probably in the near future among the flagships.
Best regards!
After 3 months with Mi8
Summarized - A great phone!
- Screen is very good balanced - normal colors, nice.
- Battery durability is much better then expected, keeping it charged for 45 minutes a day.
- very snappy. Quick to browse.
- WiFi has very good reception.
- camera is excellent, but telephoto not very usable in lower light conditions (due to lack of OIS)
Never had any problem with this phone, which is - from my experience - very rare in praxis.
Hope to get Pie and camera update soon.
I hab similar experience with miui 10 global. Can't wait to unlock :|
Camera ist not good. Many bugs like Bluetooth disconnecting and big standby battery drain. App crashes. Always on display not working.
I also don't get why they don't display notification icons, it's so easy to do.
What I really like are the full screen gestures but that's about it lol

1. Google Assistant isn't working for a ton of phones, Samsung ones included. It's a GA bug.
2. No idea why they didn't certify L1...which is FREE!
3. The display is great, the only problem is with the older ROM, HDR isn't enabled yet so HDR videos look absolutely crap. Android Pie update has fixed this somewhat.
4. The Mi 8 has both OIS and EIS, and videos are very stable from my tests.
The other points aren't relevant to me so I hope they fix it for you.

There's an issue with HDR if you have not noticed with the update. If you watch HDR videos during night time, the whole system turns a yellow tinge (Night/Reading mode OFF). When you quit the video, the system UI turns back to white. I've tested this, and the system returns itself to normal at 7.14am (I don't know why lol). It's as if HDR somehow forces Reading Mode on during night time, even if you have it turned off.
Global miui 10 8.12.20 beta,
No issues with ok Google (no unlock though)
Camera is excellent
Notch is too wide
Ported stock apps work (Google dialer, Google camera with night sight)
Got 300,737 in antutu, basically rivalling a Kirin 980 (ok I was outside in 4C temperature running it)
As for MIUI, previously owning an honor 9, I got rid of EMUI as soon as possible , I actually don't mind MIUI 10, it's not very intrusive, and is fairly minimalist, paired with ruthless launcher and a pixel icon pack, I might actually keep MIUI after I unlock the bootloader

Hi, I am a few hours away from unlocking the boatloader on my Mi8. Can you please direct me to some sure steps on installing Magisk after the Miui 10 stable update. Thank you in advance

>No unlock with assistant is problematic a little
>Which Google Camera is Working for you? Is it better the na new stock?
no need to check benchmarks, MI8 runs very fast.
A feature which would i welcome is a ported pixel 3 launcher which works (with assistant button)
Otherwise might be the best phone for the money. A big difference to slightly lower cost Pocophone (display and camera are really much better)

Indeed, no unlock is a bit meh, but at least Assistant/Google Voice works now.

for the pixel launcher, just download the modded APK from ApkMirror, this is the latest version, should work fine https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/papho...tless-pixel-2-launcher-mod-9-4889482-release/ Although, to be fair, i much prefer ruthless launcher, as it offers a few more features over the stock pixel launcher, unfortunately, you do need to install the pixel bridge fro assistant to work though.
I'd check the cameras, but my screen decided that working was not in its job description, so (luckily) i am getting a replacement device from amazon (still within returns window), should be with me tomorrow, so i'll test, but as far as i can tell, from taking a few pictures before it died, the stock camera seems very good, especially in the dark, i took a few pictures in an almost completely black room, upped the exposure, and got some rather nice (abeit a bit blurry, because i cant hold a phone still for 4 seconds it seems) images. This was on global beta 8.12.20, so may not be the same as stable 10.1.2.
I will say though, that the secondary lens, switched to using it independently (there's a setting for telephoto somewhere in the camera app), isn't very good in low light, and doesn't have brilliant saturation, but i think its a software thing, need to wait until there are a few 3rd part camera apps that can use both cameras, given pie offers an API to do that now.

Cannot find a ported Pixel 3 Launcher which would work on my MI8.
Using the rootless launcher, but missing the assistant button on search bar...
Do you have a link to a working port?

try ruthless launcher https://labs.xda-developers.com/store/app/com.ruthless.nexuslauncher
you need to download rootless pixel bridge from github too
if you want a stock pixel launcher, just try an earlier version of the one on APKmirror, just scroll down until you get to the list of versions
Seems you have not understood me...
I am using thee rootless launcher from the first date and it works very good, but I'm missing the Assistand button on the search bar...

ah, ok, have you actually got google assistant enabled, you actually need to open the assistant app at least once and set it up for it to work properly, or do you mean that the button isn't there in the search bar, because if so, that's a bit odd since it worked fine for me, to be fair, i'd just say switch over to ruthless launcher, i personally think its a bit better (although i do miss the 'right click' menu on long press of background), since the assistant button is built into the launcher, i cant see any reason why it shouldn't be there, possibly its an OS issue, i was on global beta 10.12.20, if you are on the chinese ROM it might not work, not without google services installed properly at least.

everything works about assistant (voice or button activated), I'm on global ROM. Just there is no specific assitant button on the right side of the search bar. I'm on MIUI 10.1.2.0 stable.
If there would be an specific assistant button I'd be able to switch to gesture control.
