Hi,
Do I have to use original USB cable to transfer data to/from my Hero? I tried my USB mini cable which I use with my digital camera and other devices, and Hero started to charge it's battery, but didn't display any notification about possible file transfers. Also dmesg on my Ubuntu doesn't show any connected USB device. However, it works with original HTC cable, but it's quiet short.
You need the original cable. Sorry :-(
No you don't. A normal USB to Mini USB cable works fine.

So, why mine doesn't work? As I said, the cable works fine with my camera and MP3 player.
all generic usb cables i have used so far (at least 6, maybe 10) have worked fine. charging, file transfer, adb worked.

Whilst you don't need to use the supplied USB cable, this part of your statement is *incorrect*. There have been many, many, examples here on these forums where people have had to switch to using a different cable in order to get a PC to recognize the Hero correctly.
My advice to anyone having such an issue is to try a variety of different cables, even if the cables you are using work with other devices.

Dave
hey!
i got myself a used TG01 but it didnt came with a usb host cable, so i decided to use a gender changer and the data cable to connect the peripherals to my phone, but it did not work...it does not recognize anything, am i doing something wrong ? or cant it be connected with anything else then the usb host cable provided?
thanks!!

it's a generic micro USB cable, you can find it at NOkia or HTC store
thanks for the reply, i already made some research and found out that the host cable is in fact a special cable that has 2 wires grounded on the micro usb side.
i actually was able to make one, but it must have broke a soldering point and if i connect it, it drains my battery in 10 minutes...
after the failure i just brought one out of ebay.
regards!
BTW: i encountered and other problem...
i had 2 micro USB cables, and i destroyed 1 to make the host cable, they looked the same so i picked one at random, now the phone wont change with this cable with the ac adapter connected i have to connect it to the PC to that it can receive power.
I tested with an other cable and it worked...has anyone experienced this?
I made one using an old USB extension cable. It took about 10 mins. Short the green and white wires on the female side of the USB cable. Now will use any normal in-car charger.

you have to have a short on the 2 data wires for it to charge.
Thanks to a recent video by reverendkjr on Youtube, we now have a confirmed USB OTG method for CM9.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nc7tlPwFQpg
This has lots of potential and since I did not see much talk about it here, I decided to create a thread with what you need to buy listed in reverendkjr's video and what works. I would recommend only buying from Amazon Fulfilled sellers as they are backed by Amazon's return policy. All 3 items only cost a little over $10.

2AA Battery Powered Portable USB Power Supply:

OTG Cable With Female MicroUSB (Allows you to use any microUSB charger as the power supply)

OTG Cable With Male Full Size USB (Allows you to use any power supply with regular USB port)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-USB-H...i9100-S3-i9300-i9220-i9250-XOOM-/140825132367
You can use whatever source of USB power you want including a wall charger, but I bought the 2AA battery powered supply above and can confirm it works.
Compatibility List:
-Multiple USB devices will work if you use a USB hub. A non-powered one works fine for me since you will already have a separate power source.
-USB keyboards and mice work fine including all basic functions like scroll wheel on the mouse, num and caps lock on the keyboard.
-FAT32 formatted flash drives will mount by default under "/mnt/usbdisk".
(Added September 7th)
-If you want to mount NTFS drives or multiple flash drives, download Drive Mount. This software will mount drives under "/mnt/sda1", "/mnt/sdb1", etc. I can confirm it works for multiple drives and NTFS/FAT32. It was removed from Google Play so the apk has been posted. If anybody has had success with other NTFS mounting software please post your results.
(Added April 6th)
-I tried a Rosewill USB SATA/IDE externally powered hard drive reader and was able to mount a 400GB SATA 3.5" HDD using Drive Mount. Just to see what would happen I tried a SATA DVD drive but Android doesn't recognize it and probably doesn't even support the CD/DVD file system.
(Added April 7th)
-USB card readers will work, but I've had mixed results.
USB Device Info:
If you want to diagnose items and see some info about what the Touchpad is detecting, download USB Device Info free from Google Play. Everything shows up under the Linux tab. This shows some useful info about devices including current draw, device identification, etc. I tested it with a USB hub and a few flash drives and it successfully showed entries for the hub and the flash drives. It wont tell you if Android has drivers for the device, but merely IDs the device(s) confirming the connection if working.
(Added Dec 9th)
A plugged in USB OTG adapter will show up as "Qualcomm On-Chip EHCI Host Controller" under the Linux tab regardless of whether or not power is present. This is a good way to see if you have a working OTG adapter.
Flash Drive Unmounting Issues:
Flash drives are called an SD Card when mounted. There is no option to unmount a flash drive unless you use Drive Mount, so if you notice SD card removal error messages they are referring to your flash drive and not the Touchpad's internal memory partition that is mounted as /sdcard.
When a flash drive is removed or powered off without being unmounted, its common to get a "android.process.media" force close, just tap OK.
Charging:
You will not be able to charge via micro USB while using OTG even if your power source has enough current. You can charge via the Touchstone just fine. Knowing this, you can set up a really nice docking station by using the Touchstone as a stand/charger and then using the microUSB slot for peripherals like a USB keyboard and mouse connected to a hub with spare ports for flash drives, etc.
(Added September 7th)
Insufficient Available Bus Power Fix:
If you get this error, I haven't yet, some users have had success using this app posted on Rootzwiki.
I didn't feel like buying anything and already had some things laying around so I modified an Adafruit MintyBoost to accept a device via usb, add power, and continue on down the line...
Really all I did was solder a usb cable onto the female USB port on the MintyBoost, drill a hole on the other side of the tin and feed it out. The card reader conveniently fits inside of the mint tin so it's a pretty compact package.
The only down side I've noticed is that it also charges the TouchPad (the batteries will die quicker) and continues to send power to the card reader after the OTG cable has been unplugged from the TouchPad.
Excuse the crappy pic. I really don't feel like taking a better one.
I could never get the OTG cable to charge the Touchpad, I always thought when the Touchpad sensed OTG (grounding on pin 4) it refused to take power. You can disconnect the +5v Vcc to the Touchpad (red wire) on your OTG cable and OTG devices will still work.

I came to the same conclusion some days ago ,touch pad can't be charged using org cable, needs a regular micro USB cable and the barrel AC charger.I did many tests but having otg devices working and really charge at the same time its not possible,it seems like charging but its not.
Today I accidentally found this http://direct.sanwa.co.jp/ItemPage/400-GADR002W that by first look it could be awesome...

If its provides its own 5v power it would likely work, but I don't really see anywhere for an external power connection and it looks too small to house a battery.

For whatever reason, when I tried that the card reader wouldn't initialize. Once I connected the +5v from the OTG it'd light right up...
After it lit up I could disconnect the +5v and it'd stop the "charging" notification on the touchpad and keep working.

Then it should work fine as the Touchpad uses a standard OTG pinout, it just doesn't provide power so if it has a way to provide power to devices than I see no reason why it wouldn't work.
quick question that i didn't see answered above :S can i use the otg cable adapter without another power source (like can touchpad power it?)? Saw it asked above but didn't see anyone saying that the power source is required :S
kind of want to plug a usb flash drive into touchpad so I can type documents when I'm on the go and switch to computer. don't want to carry another power source either :S

No, the Touchpad doesn't provide any power for OTG devices which is why you need to supply it power. The cheap USB charger I linked to in the original post will work fine for a portable power supply if you don't want to build something yourself.
And it also appears you can't just plug the other USB into the wall?

So, we can't just plug it into a wall for power? I have to buy a battery powered unit or use a powered hub?

Nice and cheap and the best part it works.
USB Hub works...sort of.
I tried this with a cheap USB hub I bought. I had bought it for my laptop and made sure it had it's own power supply to keep the load off my laptop, so I thought it would be perfect for this. Nice try though.
Turns out it needs 5V from the host to activate as well as the additional external power supply. Just fired it up with my TouchPad connected via a Y-Cable and my Laptop providing the 5V to fire it up. Works like a charm.
As yet to find out if it works with my travel charger providing the 5V and no external power supply plugged in, and how many devices I can hook up. It's got 7 ports so I suppose the supply might be useful then, but do I really need to hook up that many devices? Otherwise...pointless. Back to the drawing board I go.

This would be really handy and it's a much more elegant solution than a y cable and external power source.
Too bad it seems like we won't be able to get one easily.
Am i missing something here or can i use my 3.5" external HDD (with a power supply) to provide power to my External so i dont have to plug the cable into a USB hub?

Hey guys,
I just bought a solar USB Hub (with white LEDs as a torch) from Ebay and combined it with the OTG Cable to have a portable USB Hub.(no need for AC adapter except charging the hub from time to time) I had to do a little mod to prevent Evo draining the battery of the hub to charge itself. If you decide to do the same thing, when you cut the OTG cable and original hub cable, there are 4 wires, you only connect black, white and green, leave red disconnected. This way the hub doesn't provide power to the phone (otherwise you can use it only for 2 minutes or so). I then disabled automatic mounting of USB devices (despite unmounting it in terminal properly, unmounting always gave error: unexpected USB device disconnect) and used USB OTG helper v4.0 to mount and unmount. Everything is great now

How You got Your Evo charging in OTG mode??
I have modified 2-port portable charger Bliss PowerBank u12000 and stock microusb<=>usb cable (NOT otg cable), and when I turn HOST mode on by running
PHP:
echo host > /sys/kernel/debug/msm_otg/mode
my Evo stop charging, but start detecting other USB devices plugged in another port of charger (I have connected same pins inside it and unsoldered all other resistors between them).
And, uhh... where can one buy this said solar powered usb hub? I haven't found anything on google

Here's a similar one http://amzn.com/B0084JVMBU but I don't see a spec for the battery capacity & charge rate (might be 700mah).
mpgrimm2 said:
OK I see what he did with the charger. It uses an adapter (host) cable to go from the main hub port to the PC (mini-USB to full size USB-A).
It looks like he spliced the micro-USB OTG cable (pin 4&5 shorted) to a mini-USB cable, and made a custom OTG Host cable. He mentions he disconnected/broke the +5v wire to prevent it charging the phone due to the small battery in it (understandable). I wouldn't do that myself, but I'd also ideally want a 3000-4000mah Solar Hub to modify for OTG & keeping the phone/tablet charged.
Have a look at my OTG cable schematics in reference post 9 above, particularly cable 1.

Where is the link to this "u12000"? I've clicked all the links in this thread and don't see anything that lists that item/model #.
Also, by removing the resistors (between D+ and D- lines), you've "likely" limited the output the phone will charge at to 500ma, where as shorted together (or small load b/w) it will usually allow the device to charge at it's max allowed rate. Hopefully you are already aware of this.

Bliss Power Bank U12000 - just google it and find internet shop to buy it.
Yes, You are right, removing those resistors limited default charging current to 0.5A, but I'm using latest FastCharge kernel patch and in smart mode it using full 1A to charge, with no side effects. I just tested mine U12000 and found that it can produce 2.25A in short-circuit on USB, it rated as 2A => fully follow its specifications. It can charge stock Evo 3D's battery up to 3.5 times with fully charged U12000 battery.

Yes, mine Bliss u12000 charging Evo 3D when Evo 3D is not in OTG mode (connected via STOCK cable, NOT via OTG or so). But when I turn on OTG mode on Evo it stop charging but start detecting other USB devices connected to another port of u12000.
I don't know if any charger can be easily modded, but I think if it has 2 USB ports one above another (like =) and NOT side by side (like - -)
- it can be modded (of course if You can disassemble it).

Here's the link to the Bliss PowerBank U12000. I translated that page to English in Chrome and the specs are attached, but I don't think Bliss ships outside Russia.
There are many battery based USB chargers available from other sources, including this 12000mAh solar model from usb.brando.com, the same website that has the solar 4-port hub in the OP of this thread. They are Hong Kong based and ship world wide, and their website is available in many languages, including Russian.
If you search for "usb charger" or "usb solar charger' on their site you will find many more models with varying capacities, most of which are probably available on eBay as well.

For some reason the provided with cable that came with my Verizon G5 is the only USB cable that seems to work with my computer for file transfers. I've tried other various USB 3.0 cables and occasionally they will work but 9/10 times my computer doesn't recognize the device like it does with the stock cable (which Im assuming is a usb 2.0 cable?) It just makes the pluggin in noise and the device doesn't show up in the windows explorer. Anyone know why? I've rules out the cables being the issue since I've tried like 3 now to the same effect. Thanks.
I just bought one of these that works perfectly:

Though my phone does keep reconnecting at first until I select File Transfer (that option doesn't seem to want to stick and it cycles through at least Charging Only and File Transfer). Not sure why it does that, but I did just confirm that it was working by copying an album over to my SD Card.

Yes it is. But even if it wasn't that shouldn't prevent it from showing up on the computer as a device as far as I know.
anyone determined anything other than whats mentioned? I have this problem as well.
I bought a Logitech cable when I stupidly left my charger plugged into a hotel wall and it works perfectly. I wouldn't rule out there being a problem with the cable itself - I've seen people say some their droid charges slower with a third party cable so there clearly are some differences.
