Root the M4 Aqua E2303 Locked Bootloader/Install TWRP on 2.167/3.92
Before we begin:
Make sure you have the following:
•A Windows PC
•Flashtool (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_d8uWGbkaetTnhWX0J5UG5hN28/view?pref=2&pli=1)
•The .128 firmware (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzVQf67OZ9NtMFotOXRycTZoSlk/view?pli=1)
•Patience
•A good internet connection
•15 to 20 minutes
• The M4 Aqua Root Toolkit (https://www.dropbox.com/s/edse0h6b02odzn1/rootkitXperia_E23xx.zip?dl=0)
•ADB Drivers (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0MKgCbUM0itNVB1elljU2NPR0k/view?pref=2&pli=1)
•TWRP Toolkit (https://www.dropbox.com/s/yomdwq3p2le9hvi/M4Aqua-lockedTWRP-0.1-installer.zip?dl=0)
How are we going to do it:
The procedure is pretty straight forward, as the M4 Aqua is only on Android™ 5.0 we can take the kernel of the older versions of firmwares so we could root the device, while keeping the firmware version to the newest release (2.167/3.92). The method has been only tried on the E2303, there may be chances of it working for the E2306.
Let's begin! Part 1, Changing the Kernel:
First, we need to install the latest Flashtool version (link above), after you proceed with the installation of Flashtool, you need to install the Flashtool drivers, which can be found in C:/Flashtool/drivers or the path you selected flashtool to be installed. Once you open Flashtool drivers you want to select FLASHMODE DRIVERS, this is only so that the M4 will be recognised while in flashmode. After the drivers have been installed, you want to move the downloaded .128 firmware to C:/Users/*YourName*/.flashtool/firmwares or you can use the other method I will show later. Once you have done that you want to open Flashtool and wait for the Sync to finish. After that has finished, you will see a lighting icon in the top-left corner, you want to press the icon and select flashmode, now the second method, at the top you will see a path leading to the generic .tft folder in which Flashtool belives the .ftf files are located by default. You can change that by pressing the button on the right and lead the program to the path of the .128 ftf file. After you have selected your .tft file you will see on the right a lot of options *everything that the .ftf file contains*, if you want to keep the data on your device you can tick the first two options, a bit down on the right you will see a lot of options, including system.bin, you want to tick everything EXCEPT for the kernel.sin, this is the most crucial part. After that is done you want to let the program prepare the files, mean while you want to power off your M4 Aqua, after the process on Flashtool is done you want to press the VOLUME DOWN button while connecting the phone to the PC, once you see the green led light you can leave the button, if everything was done right the process of flashing should begin. If everything went well the kernel should be flashed and the phone should safely power on. Now we can proceed to the second part. Rooting the phone.
2ND METHOD
You can downgrade to .128 firmware and download the .167 or .92 firmware and update everything except for the kernel. You can do this by going into Flashtool, and doing the steps above but TICKING the kernel.sin. Try this if the first method doesn't work.
Part 2, Rooting the phone:
Now that we have changed the kernel we can use the root toolkit to root the device. Download the root toolkit from the link above, but before you do anything you want to go to Settings>About Phone, scroll down to Build number and press it 7 times, after that is done you want to go back to Developer options, and you want to tick USB Debugging, after you have done that you need to install the ADB Drivers from the link above, after that is done you can connect the phone to the computer, now you want to extract the toolkit and run install.bat *No administrator rights needed*, and then you should see a screen on your phone asking if you want to trust the computer, you want to tick the box saying always and you want to press yes, now the rooting process should begin and your phone to be rooted. After this is done we can proceed to the part 3, installing TWRP
Part 3,Installing TWRP:
Now, that we have root we can install TWRP using another toolkit. This part is optional but if you want any custom ROM's you need this. This part is the easiest, you need to download the toolkit from the link above and just run the script. We don't need any additional steps as we did them in Part 2.
If everything went well you should now be rooted and have TWRP with a locked bootloader and on the newest firmware.
In case of bricking you can use the Sony PC Companion tool and repair my phone/ tablet option. YOU WILL LOSE ANY DATA SAVED ON YOUR PHONE.
sir , can this apply to D2353?
I have only tried on E2303, but you use the right .ftf files the procedure should work

Root and flash stock kernel tft u use
I'm having issues with this also. Downgrading the kernel only causes a boot loop animation. I can downgrade everything to 128 and it works. Going back up to latest with everything BUT kernel causes boot animation loops also.
EDIT!
Oh heck yes, I did it! For anyone stuck in a logo boot loop despite following the above, here is how I did it:
- Use Flashtool to completely flash my .167 E2303 to .128.
- Use above tools to root and install TWRP.
- Use Flashtool again, but this time in Fastboot mode. I extracted the system.sin file from a .167 ftf and then flashed system using Flashtool.
- Reboot the phone into TWRP. Clear cache, dalvik. I did NOT clear data.
- Install M4 extras. Install AOSGP. Clear cache, dalvik.
- Reboot took about 15 minutes, probably less.. and BINGO.
Thanks to all.

When i upgraded from 128 to 167, phone works well but random reboots. Any fix this issue?
Clean install of .167 and .92. Flashing the .128 kernel causes the blue boot animation to hang (the start up sound cuts off half way). Flashing the previous kernel back over works.
Same happens when I flash .128 then everything but the kernel from .167 and .92.
Unsure what the FSC script option does, but yes or no makes no difference.

If your random reboots usually happen while downloading or updating apps in the play store, you should try this. Make sure you backup your data first just in case.

Hello. Please help. I got softreboot everytime I try to call someone

Hello,
thank you for this guide. I have a question: why not extracting the old kernel and just flashing the kernel.sin?
Hi guys,
Just unlocked my bootloader and began the root process.
I followed part of this guide but without backing up my DRM keys. http://forum.xda-developers.com/z5-compact/general/summary-tutorial-root-sony-xperia-z5-t3360515
I flashed my kernel and the recovery O.K.
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
flashboot flash boot boot.img
I've tried two versions of TWRP and two different versions of the kernel AndroPlus.
When performing fastboot reboot after flashing both files my phones LED blinks RED once and then does nothing.
Dramatic and scary. What can I do to fix this? When trying to boot without the cable in my phone just vibrates once and does nothing. Screen doesn't light up at all. I'm so worried.

Ok yo can try this too
Y tried and working fine root & xposed
It's tus stock kernel but with the habilita to support root
Similar issue for me
I've had almost exactly the same issue today:
- I unlocked boatloader using Sony standard process
- I followed the steps under 'How to Install CM13' within CTXz's guide here
- After flashing the Kernel and THEN the TWRP, I reboot and the phone flashes red LED, then green, then off, then red and then stays on green for a while (screen is blank). My computer registers that there is a new connection by making a sound but doesn't show up any devices that I can see.
- Periodically, I get the device disconnection sound and the green LED goes off, then red comes on, then solid green again until next cycle.
- If I disconnect the cable, the LED goes off. When I try to turn the phone on without cable attached, it buzzes but does nothing - no LEDs. I can't tell whether it is on or not, except that doing hard reset with PWR+Vol.Up gives no reaction.
- When I re-attach cable normally, the red/green LED sequence starts immediately with no need to turn PWR on, which would suggest that the phone is perhaps on.
- I am able to get into bootloader as normal and fastboot registers the device just fine.
- There is no yellow LED
I started with Kernel AndroPlus v24 and TWRP 3.0.0.0.
Failing that, I tried Kernel v20. Then I tried AndroPlus' twrp-2.8.7.0-E5823-32.0.A.6.152.
Have also tried Kernels v20 and v21 with TWRP 3.0.0.0.
I haven't had any fast boot errors - all flashes come back 'OKAY'.
I'd be very grateful for any help? Have I missed something?!
update to my post above:
I used: 'fastboot boot recovery.img' and this fired up the Sony logo with white screen and blue LED. However, after 10 mins of waiting, there was no change in status and I still couldn't get into TWRP with pressing Vol buttons, even after several restarts and unplugging, replugging etc.
Then, I realised the stock ROM on my phone before this whole process was Lollipop 5.1.1 Build 32.0.A.6.200. So, I flashed older versions of the Kernel and TWRP. Now, I can boot into the ROM and use the phone (almost) as normal except, being plugged in, it keeps re-detecting the USB cable. I now also get the Sony boot screen followed by yellow LED.
If I don't touch anything, it boots into the ROM. However, if I press a Vol button while the yellow LED is on during boot, then it just resets.
Thus, I still cannot get into the TWRP interface. Perhaps I need a TWRP version that is specific to my build - the one I have is from AndroPlus website and refers to the previous build (twrp-2.8.7.0-E5823-32.0.A.6.152.img)?
okay, further update (to save someone replying!)
I managed to boot into the system using AndroPlus Kernel v05a (I had Lollipop build ###.200), but still couldn't get into any TWRP.
I then followed the general process explained in this thread, albeit had to do a heck of a lot of research to understand the detail that is omitted from that (otherwise very useful and concise) original post. For example:
- how to actually use Flashtool (installing drivers and then getting hold of the right firmware from within the program);
- the difference between Fastboot and Flashmode;
- having to plug in the phone while it is loaded into the system before then flashing the selected firmware with Flashtool and ONLY THEN unplugging, switching off and booting into Flashmode.
- loading up the system after flashing the Kernel and TWRP so that I connect to computer and re-copy the erased SuperSU .zip file back onto storage, and then re-booting into TWRP and how to flash a zip file with TWRP.
Having now got a stock Marshmallow firmware rooted, my next step is to go back to the original guide I was following and try to install Cyanogen!
Thank you to all the people who have posted help guides throughout this site so that I could piece together what I needed to do - even though it has still taken me about 30 hours of my life to learn all this!
Hopefully my experience might help someone else in due course...

I had the same problem and solution is as is written here.
I had to flash Stock Firmware Marshmallow via Flashtool. After this I flashed kernel(boot) and recovery without problems and yellow icon will displayed.
Don't want to warm up this kind of old thread, but I have exactly the same issue (E8523). Would any of you mind to post their (stock) ROM versions which finally worked? I tried almost every combination that came to my mind (Customized CE1 32.2.A.0.224 => v31, several LP versions => more or less 20 to 32...).
Currently after installing the MM I mentioned the stock kernel worked, but when I flash the AndroPlus kernel (fastboot flash boot /path/to/boot.img) it won't boot up, black screen, looks like no dtb found (doesn't even try to load). This is also the message I get when I try to boot this img via fastboot directly.
I am sure I am missing something really stupid (quite new to android devices), but what?

Pro tip: hold shift and right click inside folder with recover.IMG or voot.IMG to open command prompt from that folder. Then all you have to do is type fastboot flash boot boot.IMG. I suggest trying to put a custom recovery like twrp on and flashing the xpower ROM from that, it will give you everything in one package.
Edit: fwiw I'm pretty sure custom recoveries have been able to flash .IMG fils for a few years now but I've never actually tried it. Might be worth a shot.
Thanks, but I haven't found cmd.exe on my linux machine yet^^ (I suppose wineconsole is cheating )
I know how to flash *stuff* to my phone, but that *stuff* seems only to work if some specific version of stock rom was installed previously. My best guess is the bootloader changes and supports different dtb formats on every version.
Stock Marshmallow 6.0.1 Customized CE1 32.2.A.0.224 does _not_ work for installing any version of AndroPlus kernel (tried a few...). It fails at boot (does not even load system, probably dtb).
Just in case someone might run into similar issues: What finally worked was Stock MM 6.0.1 Customized DE 32.2.A.0.224 with AndroPlus v31. It seems to be some older release (?), it says R2C instead of R9C for Customized CE1.
I could not find this information anywhere on the net (maybe its me), so for those with a slow internet connection the above version should work. You don't have to actually boot it, flashing is enough.
Thanks for sharing the information in this tread, it really helped me to unbrick my phone!
I started with Lollipop on my brand new Z3C and tried to root using AndroPlusKernel v31 / TWRP 3.0. This resulted in a softbick state, only being able to boot in fastboot mode.
After many hours struggling, an upgrade to stock Marshmallow (E5823_32.2.A.0.224) did the trick. This somehow seems ta make the device ready for the new kernel and recovery (I guess it has to do with the partitions in the filesystem).
Anyway, from stock Marshmallow I could start all over and succeeded to flash a custom bootloader, recovery and now have the ability to flash any desired rom! Thanks again.
To updrade to stock MM I used the instructions in this thread:
[GUIDE][18th Dec][4Noobs] Flashing A FTF File Using Flashtool
To set up TWRP recovery I used the instructions in this thread:
[ROM][UNOFFICIAL][6.0.1][E5823/E5803] CyanogenMod 13 for the Sony Xperia Z5C [ALPHA]
The stock rom I used for my E5823 is "E5823_32.2.A.0.224_R1C_CIS Generic_1298-5167.ftf" from xperiablog.net
Since I'm a new registered member I can't post external links
Google it and you're set!

I'm having the same problem, where did you get that MM stock version from?
And what do you mean by "you don't have to actually boot it"?
Search for XperiaFirm and Flashtool. There is plenty.
You don't have to start your freshly installed Stock Rom version "...". You just have to flash it (write it to your phone) Now you boot your phone in fastboot mode and flash your custom kernel and mod rom of your choice. Seems to be some incompatible whatever between not matching kernel versions and the "stuff" flashing installs (suspect sth like bootloader, but no idea).

Hi folx i tried it yesterday also and encountered the same bug - I came from AOSP and thought i have to flash stock first - but as i read your reports it is related to another reason..... Have you guys installed xposed in a first step ? Maybe this is the problem ....
Or is it related to another part of the aroma election ?

The same happened to me when I flashed the advanced stock kernel (https://www.mediafire.com/?bmhccw2x4papa4m) over another MIUI8 ROM... so maybe it's kernel related (for locked bootlader)...

Hi I had Xpower5 Rom. I wanted to try new Nougat. I had many issues with flash (error of processing system.sin and loader.sin). I dont know how now it work. After that I flashed AndroPlus 43 kernel and TWRP 3.0.2. Kernel works but No white led on startup and no recovery there (also adb reboot recovery not work) . I tried another img of twrp and nothing changed. Any idea how install recovery? Anybody has the same problem with flashing? Thanks
As this phone doesn't support universal recovery and only sports a ota partition that can be used for recovery but then requires a kernel that supports booting recovery from ota partition, it's a hustle to use non standard recovery systems.
Is there even a nougat compatible kernel with included TWRP ota boot support for this phone?
This should work

Also patching the stock kernel with the rootkernel tool integrates working twrp.

Flash firmware 5.11 first and flash nougat firmware afterwards.
This should work
Not work as well
the 3.1 3.0.2 TWRP bundled in rootkernel 5.23 messess up the internal permissions, so it will appear to work until you try and recover, or - TWRP runs a wipe with mkext4fs
i was talking a bit about it in https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3560135

Yeah, going back to Lollipop and going all the way up to Nougat works, this is what happened to me. I thought I had a psuedo-recovery-dual system boot .... where i could switch between Marshmallow and Nougat
But then I decided to factory reset, and that started all the problems.

Just make sure Restore works, so you don't get burned thinking everything is ok and end up with 12GB of partition mismatched data backup after a month, like I did

If you have AOSiP 5.6 Nougat I think you should already have root access with SuperSU, look for it in settings, if not, having a custom rom you should have a recovery, reboot to recovery and flash SuperSU.zip from the following link
https://download.chainfire.eu/696/supersu/
Good luck mate!

Oh dude, thanks for answering
But there is problem. I havent any option with "root" in name. And after install rom i losted my recovery. After this i installed cm recovery img by flashtool ( twrp image in flashtool bricking my bootloader). So when i flashed.... I have purple led. And okay... But when i going to recovery LED is correctly Orange. And after this phone screen is turning off and after few seconds going to normal system booting. For sure i have C6833. What i can do ? Im doing something wrong ?
Ok, I think you should flash TWRP 3.0.x directly to the new /recovery partition via fastboot:
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Here's a link to the full thread with detailed instructions and links to download the .img file you'll need, this way you'll never loose recovery again
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3307043
Then if successful you should be able to boot to your new recovery and flash SuperSU.
If you were to fail to get recovery with that method you might have a different problem, try the above, if it doesn't work I'll help. There's a chance your recovery partition wasn't created correctly....

Okay ill gry tomorrow. There is starting to be late. And i will informate You. Thanks You realny much
Hi!
After flashing that twrp 3 you linked, I still can not enter to recovery.
Power button, wait for purple, push vol down purple changes to weird lightbrown, than nothing.
before cm was working, than I was put a dual rom there, which wasn't able if I remember correctly to flash that nougat, so i flashed it from fastboot. From there I'm not able to enter recovery.
Also that link says "To use, make sure you have installed the new bootloader by flashing the latest stock Sony ROM at least once."
So it could be a problem? I don't know which one was the last stock Sony ROM it, I was bought it used, and w/o thinking I was put cm on it.

You seeing the led going purple and all colors shows you are on an old stock rom.
Flash the latest firmware with Flashtool: http://www.flashtool.net/downloads.php
And try again.
I need stock 5.1 lp for flash recovery ? Damn....
Ok I did it. No purple light now.
But now I don't know how to enter recovery.
Stock sony 5.1.1 is on. Tried to get in recovery, but just boots.
Flashed twrp 3.0 still don't know how to get in.
I thought to install XZDualRecovery https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2647492 because it says how to enter into it, but im not sure i can flash it via fastboot.
heeeelp!
edit:
adb reboot recovery just simply restarts back to android... ? O.O
eddit:
never mind, it works now
To enter recovery:
* Switch off the phone
* Hold Vol-Down & Power button simultaneously until the phone vibrates
* Release the power button and keep holding Vol-Down until the Sony logo appears

You don't actually need it, if you had latest Sony stock at least once then the new bootloader would have been installed, and new /recovery partition created.
If you read and followed AOSiP installation instructions correctly, you should have been aware that having had lollipop installed in your phone was also needed for any Marshmallow or Nougat Rom to work, since your AOSiP worked that should've been the case.
Did you try flashing TWRP 3.0.x via fastboot?

Yeah, now recovery working. But i installed supersu next to get in recovery, witthout checking than my rom working correctly. And now i have issue with AOSiP logo... Its stuck ( i had that before in diffrent roms).or recovery. So i will try to take my system wipe....
You're almost there man, you now have a decent recovery, now as you said just do a full wipe, flash rom, gapps and SuperSU, reboot and see if it's working the way you like, write any findings or whatever at your rom's thread, good luck bro.

If I do that nothing happens.
The purple light come back to me, so i'm waiting for that, and when it appears, i press the vol-up and twrp comes in. Though it freezes out, if i press vol-down when the purple light is comeing, or when i press restart in twrp. Black nothingness in both cases.
I think the purple light at boot come back when I flashed nougat boot, system and userdata. I don't really understand. Firmware is a different thing right? It is not on the partitions.
I probably will put another nougat on it, this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/xp...elopment-cm14-android-7-0-freexperia-t3457377
instead of this one: https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z-ultra/development/android-n-t3452954
I will hope it doesn't freeze inside the os.
edit: ohh its freezeng out there too: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68603461&postcount=17
eddit: your method also works i tried it again now. when i was powering off the phone it was freezed out. (but i thought it is off) so had to push that reset button.
Whenever your phone needs a restart, (i.e. something happened and it seems frozen...) you don't have to use the little red reset button, you can get the same result by holding Power button + Vol-up until it vibrates, that'll switch it off just like the reset button, then you can just turn it back on normally to boot to your rom or boot to recovery.
