I've looked and looked but can't see what it is and its bugging me that something might be running in the background using up battery I don't need
It's the nfc icon
I thought the NFC is the mobile one on the left
Mine appears on the left; however, if you zoom in on the picture, it's the nfc icon. Strange how it's on the right though ?. Have you tried enabling/disabling nfc from settings to verify if?
Yep and it does seem to be using 2 icons, one when NFC is switched on and the second when the NFC is enabled on the banking app which seems a waste of screen space
Hmm, that's really strange. When I turn on nfc, only the 1 icon appears but then again, I don't have a banking app installed. Are you able to turn off nfc on the app?
If I turn it off my app the mobile icon will go but the NFC one will stay until I disable NFC itself.
Never had two icons for NFC on a mobile before so this is a first
Maybe your banking app is creating the second NFC icon. You can look at what notification permissions it has in settings.
I only have 1 NFC icon. I have two banking apps and use Google Pay at registers and I haven't noticed a second NFC icon.

In that case, it is the app you are using not the S3. Your title is misleading.
I am having trouble finding out what the "circled dot" icon next to the battery icon means. It is a large dot with a circle around it. I think I noticed it once before today, but I am now seeing it a lot for about the last hour. Is it related to the no cell strength I had? I'm not seeing the circled dot now that there is cell connection. Microsoft's WP7 page explains all the various icons, but not for WP8. This appears new. Don't see anything in the manual or thru search.

Thanks. That appears to be it. Using apps that access location causes the icon to appear. But I wasn't using any of these kind of apps, I believe, when I noticed it today. Just turning the device on, I would see the icon on the lockscreen. Perhaps it was Weather app live tile or other background process. Also I don't normally leave wifi / data on, so that might explain why I don't usually see it.
Weather app live tile will do that as it updates weather info for your current location.

What's the dot with the two brackets around it? I see it under my music controls.

I've turned off all of the location services in settings, but my notification bar still has an icon that looks like the GPS is still on. It's a circle with a cross in it and arrows at the cardinal directions. I've even turned GPS off using the power control widget, but it's still there. Anyone know what this and how to get rid of it?

That is the GPS icon and unless you are unlocked you cannot get rid of it (that I know of).
Hey guys,
I've been trying to figure out why the NFC icon is missing from the status bar. NFC is turned on in Settings and Quick Settings; but the icon isn't present on the statusbar.
I checked NFC, and it worked when I tried to pair my SmartBand and my M8.
I haven't tried restoring the phone, but I have serious doubts that would fix (this is the last resort).
Any suggestion so far?
I'm unrooted, and I haven't unlock my bootloader.

see if the NFC icon is checked?
edit: oops.. just seen you went to check on quick settings, then i got no idea sorry maybe restart the phone?
Have you accidently pressed "hide NFC icon" in the settings?
Never mind you can't hide NFC.

Certain versions of FW don't display the NFC icon by default even though its activated.
You have 2 options;
Flash a FW with the NFC icon displayed, or
Root the phone and modify the buildprop to show the NFC icon.

Thank you for the answer! Unfortunately, me being impatient… I wasted time flashing another firmware. Oh well, not all is lost… only time!

what to modify exactly?
Hi,
as soon as I'm running any program like google maps, waze or other SW using the GPS I get an "icon" in the status-bar telling me the obvious (that positioning is on). The Mate 20 PRO's large screen Notch does not make room for taking up space with that kind of unnecessary "information".
I tried to turn this status indicator off but failed miserably.
Is there any way this can be done?
System UI Tuner is probably the easiest option - I have it hiding the Bluetooth, NFC, and alarm icons, but it can do GPS as well.
If you can't use ADB you can use this method to hide a few of the icons, but GPS isn't one of them. Nova launcher can also create the shortcut for you.
I'm running Nova, which shortcut is it I can create with it?

Thanks, have installed it now. Strangely enough I do not seem to be able to get it hiding my bluetooth icon.

Thanks, the other symbols dissapeared immediately but as you said, BT needed a complete restart.
