LG vs BOE battery life - Huawei Mate 20 Pro Questions & Answers

Few reports of battery life not as good on the BOE devices, let's try and get a better picture of what's happening.
I now have a BOE.
While I can get through a day of good usage I'm sure it was better on my first device with an LG screen.

How do you know the manufacturer of the screen?

I didn't expect their to be a difference in battery life between the two devices due to screen manufacturing. However I replaced my device with a BOE screen. This is day one for me and I will monitor and see how things end up in terms of battery life. The screen quality is much better though with the BOE

Andriod noob here. I feel i have the same issue.
My last phone was a iphone x, used phone clone to transfer pictures and contacts to my new mate20pro.
Installed all the apps i needed and i instantly loved the phone, fast and so much battery life. I didnt mess with any battery settings, wifi and 4g always on, brightness auto, auto updates and highest screen res.
I was watching twitch for like 4 hours straight and used very little battery.
Unfortunatly i had a LG screen and got the green edges. So i got a new phone with BOE screen (checked with the hw app) . Transfered everything via phone clone and i instantly felt like something was wrong. I really feel like the battery is draining fast. Turned off auto updates and been messing around with the app launch settings. Just installed gsam battery monitor pro. Will post picture. Any help is welcome.

How to attach picture?

Hm, AnandTech review suggested that LG panel have high standby power use.

My new BOE Mate 20 pro has the same battery life of the previous 6 LG ones. 8hrs SOT to 10 depending on useage.

I'm still not convinced I'm getting anywhere near the same battery time.
I've got 5hrs SOT + 1hr 45 of Talk time and I'm down to 23%. Wish I had recorded either of my previous returns (LG) to compare against.
Sent from my LYA-L09 using Tapatalk

It wouldn't make so much difference..

Screen on time with 43% battery left, used GPS for 30 minutes, 20 minutes of YouTube, Slotomania game for 30 minutes. 3 short phone calls.
Pretty amazing I think.

Today's usage, been watching YouTube, and 3 hours of tv shows with Huawei video player. ?

Have you changed any settings or apps out of box? I barely got 7 hours today just browsing and YouTube with a few camera shots and 30 min talk time... Seems definitely lower than my LG screen. Oh and which resolution are you using? I'm full quad HD highest res possible.

I'm using full quad HD, vivid colours, default. All other applications are set to battery optimisation except for playstore, play services, glasswire, zetatorrents.
Everything else is pretty much standard out of the box.

Thanks and were you on Wi-Fi most the day as opposed to LTE?

Awesome, thanks. I've only had my phone a day and a half so 7 hours was still pretty good today though I was on LTE most of the day. I'm thinking it will get a little better in a day or so as everything settles in.

How can I do that?

Well, my experience is the same. I had two LG screen Mate 20 pro units and while the green glow was a nightmare, I never had any issues with battery life. I was surprised that the battery test result on GSM Arena was not good at all...
Then I got my replacement phone with BOE screen and while the screen is ok compared to the "green lantern" LG screen, it goes nowhere near the two devices I had in terms of battery life. The standby drain is enormous, screen on time only around 3-4 hours and the features most draining the battery is mobile signal and wifi and screen in hardware. I needed no optimization with my 2 LG units, while I hibernate apps here when screen off, I also switched off autosync, but still my standby drain overnight (approx. 6-7 hours) is about 12-16 per cent, which is another nightmare considering how majority of reviews boasted with super amazing battery life - and every reviewer got a Boe screen version of the phone I reckon, at least in our country. When I take it off the charger, I lose a percent every 5-7 minutes I have the screen on. I do not get it but it is a real disappointment. Today I switched off automatic 4g-3g-2g because my signal at home is rather poor, but I did not do anything with the LG unit and when I charged to 100 before I went to bed, I woke up 7 hours later with still 100...

First True Battery Stats with GSAM and On Screen Time

I was able to get 5.5 hours of on screen time with the phone being on for 17 hours.
That is with a mix of youtube, phone calls, small amount of Netflix for testing, watching a movie from SD Card.
I left the Wifi on the whole time as you can see with one of the screen shots. I did have on Stamina mode.
This was after letting my phone charge the first time to full and not plugging in again. The down time with the phone not being used was because I left it on while I slept. In 8 hours the phone only dropped 8% while I slept (very good).
So to answer a lot of questions about the battery, it is AWESOME!

Could you give us a bit better test , like more usage , I mean screen time is great but you barely did anything in t he phone , 41% of app usage is nothing , 1 min of phone call is also nothing.
Don't get me wrong I'm interested into xzu but I'd like to see regular / intensive usage , also could you tell us which brightness you were using ?
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium
This was Web surfing, watching Netflix, you tubing, etc. It never just sat with screen on. I actually used it the whole time.
Screen brightness was about 30% the whole time.
With the screen at 30% brightness, was the perceived brightness level pretty good? Maybe a little low? I'm curious to know, because I suspect lower brightness settings than usual will be satisfactory with this display.
Screen brightness is good. Although I have not tested it outside in the sunlight. I am going on a canoe trip tomorrow so I will be able to test the waterproof and brightness out
**** dude, be careful, lol. I'm sure the phone will be fine in the water, but I'd hate for it to slip out of your pocket and be gone down the river! You'd never find it. Makes me sick just to think of, lol.
Anyway, I am definitely getting the LTE version of this when it becomes available. Thanks for the battery and display insights.
That's why I bought the insurance haha.

In the first attached print screen with the list (phone, screen, phone radio, etc.) how did you disable the graph at the bottom to show up or how to make it disappear?, thanks
I had 18hrs 40mins of up time and 5hr 15mins of screen time. 3G/WiFi mode, Stamina mode OFF
Usage includes web surfing, facebook, messaging and video playback (1hr).
Don't worry about the brightness. ZU at 0% is brighter than S4 at -1 (lowest is -5) lol. ZU really had a bright screen.

The battery capacity won't be at max after just one or two cycles. Use it for a full week and then see how it performs.
So far for me, I am down to 24% after 10 hours. I won't make it through the day since I"m still up for 5 more hours. This was on moderate usage. With Stamina Mode Enabled.
- one phone call
- three emails
- checked facebook twice, and instagram twice
- watched 20 minutes of youtube tho
- listened to music while working out for one hour
- 57 texts sent/received

I don't know, over 3.5 hours screen on time with 17% remaining seems pretty good to me. I haven't really done any formal tests, but I don't seem to get much more than about 3 hours screen on time with my Nexus 4 period, let alone with almost 20% remaining, and I can always make it through a day. This is would be an upgrade for me. The most telling thing, however, is the screen brightness. About where did you have it set?

Battery life seems to be totally acceptable, I never saw a powerful smartphone able to survive an heavy use for a full day or maybe at its time only the Nokia 6310i able to last 4/5 days of heavy use, but it was a tiny monochrome screen for a big phone and huge battery. And yet there i still no ROM/Kernel available so the battery life can be optimized.
But a question, what about the charging time?

Got 4.5 hours SOT with mainly browsing reddit yesterday, auto brightness 100%. Not bad considering my old phone would give out in around an hour.
I'm pretty pleased with the battery life so far. The pics below were at the end of my first full day with the device. It is rooted & debloated. I left it on 4G all day and, since I was in the car for most of the day, I had a little over 7 hours of streaming music via the SiriusXM app and Google Music. This includes the debloating process, which is why the screenshot shows a 28% loss in the previous 3 hours alone. It would've gone a good deal longer with normal usage.
I've not been getting good battery life since I've had my phone. I've noticed that my Android OS has been awake for 4+ hours, I mean I could lose 30%+ in an hours and a half sometimes, with auto brightness on. I don't play games at ask on it or stream anything. Idk what's going on.

My last phone was a s4 samsung.. the battery was pretty weak, getting down to nearly 10% every day.
Bringing home my G3 with moderate to heavy use and im easily getting home with 30%.
i have my brightness set at about 65%
My original razr maxx was only slightly better.. but over all the phone was a laggy sack of sheet.
My Batt life is NOT good. The S5 did a much better job at handling what I throw at it. Hope it improves.
I was able to get over 2.5 hours sot during 17 hours of use with 50% left. I say that's pretty damn good

Well
My battery is okay. Not great. I rooted and debloated; that seemed to help. I'm a heavy user. I stepped down from a 3500mah phone (xt1080), so it's definitely a bit of change.
Since the battery is removable, I went ahead and found a 3500mah battery on eBay to replace this 3000mah. We'll see how it performs. Either way, I'll have a spare battery.
Getting great batt life. I'm coming from the M8. I always have WiFi and BT turned on...I did get 1 bad day where batt just kept draining. Did a full charge and it was all better
Bad Battery
You guys with poor battery life might just have a bad battery. Plenty (including myself) are getting good/very good battery life. I can go a whole day easily with moderate/moderate-heavy use.
Hit your local Verizon Store and see if they will help you out by giving you a new battery.
be gentle plugging it in... my charging port is broken.
Lookin at at least 7 hours on screen . I love this phone. I'm running 4g all the time. Running high accuracy mode location when screen is on and taker turns off location when screen is off. Greenify to hibernate various non essential apps. Been listening to music, taking pics, and browsing web worth usual social networking apps. Enjoy the g3! Oh yeah screen at auto/85%
42%, Off charger for 24 hrs., Estimated 20 hrs remaining, ~2 hrs Screen On Time
I don't use my cell phone much on the weekends and it's been on wifi 90% of the time. I still think this is quite impressive
I roll with screen at 100% as I do with all my phones. Battery has been terrible. Wasn't much better when I dropped to 80% brightness

Mine went off the charger at 11pm, Thursday, Aug 28. Lite usage through Monday, Sept.1
At 1am I had 38% or 10h 25m remaining.
On a typical work week, I get 2 1/2 days on one charge, with the power saver set to "normal",
the lowest setting.

Hi! Can I just do a quick check with u regards the China version. Is it the one that's with their in house processor? And if they come with gapps installed? And the lte band? You must choose MT2-L05 version in order to get LTE working in Singapore. It is with Huawei in house Kirin processor which different from US Snapdragon 400. You just need to download Google.apk and installed on this China version HAM2.

Nearly 9 hours off charge. 1 hour of listening to radio/podcasts. Other time spent Checking emails and looking at Web.. .. .. I am currently at 86%. I will not charge it until I get down to near zero.... We will see how long it lasts. I'm guessing sometime on Saturday, lol. I will let you know.
Battery Test
I quit my battery test once I hit the 2 day mark. Let me start off by saying I did this test on a week day so I'm not limited to my lazy day weekend phone usage. I'm in the I.T. field so i'm a power user when it comes to smartphones. My phone is my central hub to my life. The things I use daily and can not live without is phone, text, EMAIL, Facebook, Dropbox, my flash light widget, Evernonte, Google Maps, Amazon, eBay, Pandora, and Camera. I know that sounds like a lot but I promise you I access every one of those apps on a daily basis at least twice a day. (flash light for dark places behind desks or when on the porch at night). I have the power setting to "Endurance". Keep in mind I followed the correct profile settings also. The only two I used out of the four is Normal and Sleep (the other two is meeting and outdoor). I also kept my screen brightness on Auto for most of the time unless I was playing a game or watching youtube. At night around 1 am when I usually go to sleep I turned my phone on "sleep" profile which turns off everything except phone, and text. Which I want left on in case my 82 year old grandmother needs to call me in the middle of the night for some emergency (or my brother gets arrested, lol). When I woke up I simply turned my profile back to normal which you can set to the way you like. I kept mine on the original settings. That being said I did not use my phone like it was under some battery test trying to screw with the results. My brother and I have had many phones in the past and all the batteries do not live up to the description. After 2 days of being off the charger. I woke up with 28% on the 3rd day and could not wait no longer to charge it because the power manager said I have another 9 hours of charge left. I prob could have made it through another work day but being the techie I am can not afford to have my phone die. My brother has a Note 3 right now and he swears i'm tweaking my phone to get these results. (hahah Samsung Sucker, I'm an LG Fan). I attached some pics of my Battery Stats. This phone is a flagship for all smartphones. I can't wait to see next years phone. I thought the display would be a little upsetting because its not 1080p but after doing a test next to my brothers note 3 with all out power saving settings off and screen on 100% brightness his phone only looked a little better then mine. like so little that he was getting upset. hahah kept giving me excuses of how the video is not really HD or its streaming different or bla bla bla. after 10 videos he was still talking sh*T. I was cracking up. This phone is actually brighter then the Note 3 which makes it look almost as clear.
As a Note I use Mobile hotspot in my car all the time because I have an in-dash Android Tablet as my radio and I need wi-fi to listen to Pandora and Spotify. I used hotspot about 4 hours within the 2 day test.
I also used in the two days that would consume battery:
Pandora - 2 hours
Hot-spot- 4 Hours
YouTube- 30 Minutes
Games - 30 mins
Facebook- random check ins all day
XDA Free- random check ins all day
Text (screen time) no way to guess. I text all day. hahahaha
Play with settings- 2 hours
Live wallpaper - sucks power ( I had it on)

[Discussion] Note 7 Battery Life

I just got my Note 7 yesterday and so far I'm pretty happy with the battery life. It's a great improvement compared to my previous phone (iPhone 6+), though I'm still figuring out on things to do to make the battery last longer.
if you want the maximum battery life, then disable animations in the dev settings (look around to learn how to get there if you don't know. only saying it cause you said you came from iPhone and thus idk what knowledge you have on android lol).
Um, also use minimalist wallpapers with a dominate black aspect.. (as in, use a wallpaper that is mostly pure black, since with AMOLED screens, true black means the 'pixels' are turned off completely, thus saving you a tiny tiny bit in battery). Also just don't use live wallpapers in general.
Ummmmmmmmmm..... oh, don't keep the phone at 100% alot. I'm kind of a hypocrite with that one though. I keep mine around 100% all the time because I never know when I'll randomly be out of the house for the majority of the day. thus having a 'full' battery means possibly an extra 30 minutes to an hour of 'usage'. But this also means that the battery will not last as long later on during its life. It also produces its most stable power delivery around the 83-85% area, so that's where you get the best 'bang for your percentage' so to speak. You'll notice it stays in the 83-85% range alot longer than it does at any other percentage.
But all in all, just keep the brightness down to a reasonable level, don't install apps that constantly run in then background (for example, I recently started using a podcast app called Pocket Cast, and ever since installing it, my battery % at the end of the day is generally 60% less than usual. As in, i normally can end my work day with about 78% battery remaining during an 8 hour shift, but after using this app, i'll be lucky to make it out with 10-20% battery. It seems to hog the battery when you're using it as well as when you're not. So at this point, I'd highly NOT recommend using it, even though its such a pleasure to use. Wow this was a long side note haha.), don't use the phone if its hot or cold, and idk I mean, everything I've listed is pretty much everyday basic things. So I doubt you are someone who doesn't already know these things XD

if you want the maximum battery life, then disable animations in the dev settings (look around to learn how to get there if you don't know. only saying it cause you said you came from iPhone and thus idk what knowledge you have on android lol).

Thank you for the very informative reply, i have been switching back and forth from iOS to Android (eversince the first iPhone the first Xperia X10)
It is indeed an awesome switch for me this year, i hated my iPhone 6+ and the more i use the note 7 the more i like it. Given that it isn't "perfect", it's keeping me satisfied so far.
Let them tips coming

Well the biggest tip I can give is this: GET A GLASS SCREEN PROTECTOR.... if you don't, you will regret it within weeks. The "Gorilla Glass 5" screen is complete crap. It scratches easier than plastic screens.... most Gorilla Glass phones have a hardness of around 5, but the Note 7 is only a 2-3. Some people have their phones scratching at level 2, others level 3... level 3 is just slightly better than plastic, and level 2 is worse than plastic... So get proper screen protector for the front, probably one that is good to be used with a case if you plan on getting a case as well. I'll personally be getting a DBrand skin for the phone and a screen protector from a company called Myrax? I think that's what it is. lemme go check.
Myriann is who makes it =3 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JFHA16G/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=KYMJDORDQX1V&coliid=I2ELMRA3UAHQMC&psc=1 and here's the link to its page. lol.
I thought the TGSP for the "edge" type phone is a hit and miss. I mostly read bad reviews about them and i think i only saw around 5 good reviews (or posts here) out of like 50 reviews
Have had mine for around 24 hours now and after a good charge after buying it, I got around 6.5hrs of SoT. Pretty happy with that. Only gonna get better haha.

The battery saving option really does work!
Move from 6s Plus to Note7, I'm not really happy with Note7 battery life. But I think it will improve in next two week. I aslo need UVable kernel to make phone cooler as I did on Note5

Will updating affect the "rootability" of the phone?
First run (52-0) I got 4hrs SOT during initial set up.
2nd most present run I got 6hrs 26mins (8% left) within 15hrs of usage, although I played Pokemon Go for 3hrs on max brightness which did some pretty hefty damage.
For those who want max battery life, this is what I've learned in my limited time:
- Download (buy) Package Disabler Pro (PDP) and disable the bloatware
- Disable the unnecessary sensor stuff throughout the settings app
- If you dont use Always On Display, disable it
- Disable Auto Brightness, and use the minimum brightness manually
- If you play Pokemon Go, download "Battery Saver for Go", it turns the display off when idle
- Enable MID Battery Saver mode with unchanged resolution, enabled Limit Performance, and disabled Prevent background network (if you stream or need it, otherwise enable it). Set max brightness to 80%
---- Be sure to re-enable Device Maintenence in PDP to get customisable power savings back.
- If you want, use the BLACKEST theme you can. I personally dont like any of them, so i kept to Samsungs stock theme
- DONT USE FB OR FB MESSENGER, TWITTER, INSTAGRAM etc. Use the web versions
- DONT USE CHROME. Samsungs Stock browser takes time to get used to, but its much more battery friendly
Without me playing Pokemon Go, I could have easily pushed for 7hrs SOT++ which is damn impressive for having the brightness at 80%.

Screen on time

It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day, especially when we watch "videos"! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ before depleting the battery.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Firs day note 10+ exynos.

This was my first day after battery learning usage patterns went away. This was actually like day 4 or 5 of owning the phone.
Not bad I'd say...
Here's a screenshot of my screen on time. I used to phone pretty happy today but this is my best so far. Yesterday the phone died at around nine and a half hours fuse lately I've been loving the consistency of the battery life on this phone. It's similar to the s10 plus in the fact that the more you use it the longer it lasts. Thankfully I've had zero issues with battery drain to my knowledge.
this is on a day off with all the Bluetooth tracking nonsense turned off,
Location on during the use of one specific app for about an hour and a bit,
Optimized setting on battery,
Sync on for Gmail, ig, etc
Wi-Fi turned on all day,
no always on display,
no adaptive brightness,
What are your thoughts if anyone has questions please let me know?
(Edit phone is at 1 percent with 10h and 12min)

Where do you see that learning patterns?
I actually never saw that on my phone, no matter which option I turn on or off.

Watching YouTube for over 5 hours would give most phones a high screen on time.

Here's a list
Sad
Terrible
Note 10+, adaptive brightness, dark mode, medium power saving mode on
Great reception and signal. Weak results.
Maybe a rogue app you got there. Check for any app crashes.
I'm not getting good battery life...
With brightness below 50%, max resolution, always on display... I have the exynos version.

Me too... battery sucks on my exynos, brightness 35%
Why??? 5h without game or video
Haven't really formally tested all the way to zero, but today at 80% I had about 2 hours of screen time. Now I'm at 63% with nearly 3 hours of screen time. So I'm thinking 6-7 hours of screen time with my daily usage, which is excellent for me.
Performance mode on, FYI. Brightness usually 50%+.
