Hi guys,
Have had my Hero just over a month now and love the thing to bits...
The one thing (battery life aside) that pees me off though is that the phone can be slow at times...
It seems to stem from apps either opening themselves and running in the background, or not closing properly when I select to close them.
I seem to spend half my time using the phone in TaskKiller getting rid of everything that shouldn't be running before I can do anything.
Has anyone got any smart ideas on how I can improve the problems above?
I've also noticed when I switch the phone off and back on a) it improves things slightly, but b) it also runs lots of things that I don't need open so is there a way to stop things running on start up?
Thanks for the help guys.
To show you what I mean, I just restarted the phone and killed everything except:
WaveSecure Beta
com.google.android.apps.mapssomething that goes off the screen) - can't kill this
HTC Sense
Touch Input
com.htc.provider
Go back to it 10 minutes later and I also have the following open:
Settings
vizBattery
Wi-Fi Status
Google Mail
Thats without me touching it at all.... if I had also used the Twitter app, Facebook, messaging etc then they would all still be open, the browser and music player would probably be there too.
It's normal fo it to start some apps on its own, for example peep (htc's twitter program) the music player (only if you have a widget on one of the homescreens)
same goes for calander etc etc google mail is push so it has to be opened to recieve messaged realtime.
Things like batterystatus thingy's often drain your battery and sometimes slow down your device I suggest removing that.
Also I don't know about wifi status but can imagine that draining battery to since
I don't think that will be running without your wifi being on. When continuosly searching for networks your device also will slow down, and drain the battery
My english isn't perfect so I hope you understand what I'm saying.
edit: do you use the official t-mobile rom or a custom? Don't know if htc released the last update for t-mob devices. That update really improved almost everything
so if you don't have that it's ''normal'' for the device to lag.
Some apps register themselves to start automatically. Obviously Gmail needs to run if you're syncing a Gmail account.
There's at least one app (paid) that can override this - I believe it is called Startup Auditor.
However, for the most part, it doesn't really matter since many of the apps that appear to be "running" will not be consuming any CPU time (and by extension battery life) unless they are designed to run in the background.
In addition, as Stafflover has already said, I'd also suggest you try removing vizBattery - whilst I've no specific experience with this app, I've heard that many battery status widgets drain the battery significantly.
Regards,
Dave

Hey Pal! I had the same problem then I got into a bit of app development and understood. Some service need to be "broadcasting" and some other to be "listening". Best you can do is sometimes tell them how often to "wake up and check". But if you think about it, a program MUST be checking on a few things, at least sometimes, to give you the "android experience". Also, no matter how much you care about that number you see in the "free ram" widget (assunming you use taskiller with the widget), it is not very important until it REALLY does slow your phone down. Some apps are worse than others at clogging up or draining your battery: try them, weigh how useful they really are for you and then decide what to keep (running) Ciao!
Hello everyone
My phone appears to have some quite bizarre problem. It's to do with the alarm clock. Regardless of what time I set it, it plays maybe a second of the song I told it to play and then turns off. Naturally, that's not nearly enough to wake me up, so I sleep through that. That's the basic problem.
I then decided to see if the problem persists if I am fully awake and I set the alarm to a minute from now. Lo and behold, it worked flawlessly. Same song and everything.
Another test was had. I thought that maybe the alarm clock crashes and needs to recover to properly work. So I set a second alarm. One was set for 6.59am, the next for 7.00am. The idea was that it would crash at 6.59 and would work properly at 7. That worked for one day.
Today, the alarm clock stopped twice after a second.
So obviously, something is wrong here. I have no idea what is going on and I have no idea how to fix it. Any help would be appreciated. I've now cleared all alarm data and re-set the alarm. But I would really like to know that I will actually wake up when I should.
Thank you for your help.
Have you tried a different song? Is the song on the internal memory or on a microsd? What ROM?
I'm running Android Version 4.1.2, the song is on the memory card in the directory \music.
I have tried a different song, to no avail. And it does sometimes work with the one song I'm using.
Try copying the song to the internal memory, also try resetting the Clock's data from System Settings > Application > Application Manager, find the clock there and delete its data.

How can I copy a file to internal memory? I have never had to do this, so I'm sorry if I'm sounding a bit daft.
Well, when you connect your phone to your PC (assuming you have windows) you'll see Phone Memory and SD Card, put your song in the Phone Memory
I'm sorry to be such a bother, but I don't see it. All I see is this: http://i.imgur.com/G7iTE4j.jpg
Would I maybe need root access?
That's the phone memory, so it's already as I suggested. I'm sorry, I have no more ideas. Maybe see if other music formats work better. I'm assuming you use mp3? Try wav. It should work with any supported format though, this isn't a solution as much as it is a workaround. I'm sorry I can't help more, hope you find a way, good luck.
I have indeed been using an MP3-file. And I've cleared all the memory, re-set the alarms and it happened again today. One second of alarm, then silence.
I'll try do a WAV now. I have my doubts that it will work, seeing as it does work with an MP3 occasionally, but it's worth a shot.
Also, don't worry. You've been a really great help. I greatly appreciate it. So: Thank you for all the help, even if it didn't work. While you've not found the one way that works, you've found a number that didn't. And that gives us something to work on.
Gentlemen, I have fixed it. Here's what I did: I got Tasker and I followed a handy guide to make a badass alarmclock: Have a Guide!
But because I'm too lazy to reset my alarm every day, I made multiple profiles. One - in my case - was for Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Then I added a second condition, adding 7am as the time. Tuesday and Thursday, did the same, but set the time to 8am.
It's a bit more difficult than just setting a regular alarm, but you're not running the risk of the alarm failing.
I'm having this problem too with the alarm, and i'm being looking for answers as well...
One thing new, I found that the alarm problem stop if I disable the lock-screen.
I try for some days, and none of the alarms stopped.
Today I enable the stock lock-screen and my first alarm stop - just work for 1 second... like I thought.
I try something new now, enable the lock-screen but not in the simplest finger mode, I configured it to swipe code.
Let's see what happens.
I'll be back with feedback.
BTW, I'm with a Samsung Galaxy SII

Any progress made? I have the same problem on my galaxy note. Havent really tried to fix it, but it looks like the same problem. Can't remember when it started. But when the alarm goes of, it plays my selected alarm for under a second, and then goes silent.
Well, yes and no.
I mean, I could not find a reason for this neither was able to get an answer...
But I get a workaround, you need to disable the stock lock-screen.
You will have the alarm work well with no issues if you disable it. You can use any other lock-screen, like "Go Locker", "C Locker", "Widget Locker", and so on, except the stock one.
Try and feedback.
I think this is an Android JB bug...

Will try your workaround. Strange thing here is that it works fine when I test it by setting the alarm 1 minute into the future and lock the phone. Goes off and works like it's supposed to. But every morning, everything else is the same, just set the alarm a few hours ahead instead of a minute, it will stop after half a sec. Deep sleep state or something (on the phone that is)? I don't know how it works.
please,
the alarm does not work with the phone off?

Yes, that's my problem too. If you set 2 alarms in the morning with just 1 or 2 minutes break, the second one always ring... eheheh...
That - I don't know why - is the NORMAL BUG behavior.
Anyway, I don't have that bug now, just stop using the stock lockscreen. With me works with all the others...

Never tested that...
Turning off the lock screen did fix it. Looked at the lockers you suggested, but go locker would only work with go launcher, which is not what I use. You can buy go locker pro, and it will work with any launcher, but I didnt really want to pay for a lock screen. C locker is free but looked a bit unfinished. Also both c locker and widget locker has comments saying just pressing the home button will bypass the lock screen all together. And widget locker is not free either. Will see if I can find one I like
However I do think it's strange if this is a known problem or bug, that not more people are reporting this. I would think the alarm is something people use and rely on.
I'm not sure that Go Locker only work with Go Launcher...
There is an option to disable the home button from disabling the lock... in all of them. My Galaxy S2 have a fisical Home button and it's disable, don't bypass the locker.
C Locker have a new version...
I know this problem in several phones, including Sony or Assus Padfone. So, it must be Android related...
Anyway, too many rom's, lock screens and alarm app would change this, so not everyone have the issue.
PMoto.
The go locker did work, but I could not configure it. It said to activate go locker fully, please install go launcher, when I tried to run the configuration. Mite be me doing something wrong, but I didn't bother to investigate further. Anyway, I found another work-around. There is something in the android alarm clock app called smart alarm. If you activate this, the regular alarm will work properly. The smart alarm plays a pleasant ambiant noise track before the regular alarm kicks in. I have it set to go off 3 miniutes before the regular alarm. So the smart alarm kind of wakes the phone, so the regular alarm will work
Huummm. I never saw that...
I'm curious. And, yes, that could do the trick.
I'll try out.
Hi,
This is my first time specifically posting a question as a Q&A style thread so I hope I'm doing this right.
I have been using the Redmi Note 2 for about a month now. Overall, it's been a great phone (especially considering the price). However, I've been experiencing a couple of issues and I am hoping that some of you may be able to help.
I have rooted the phone but have not installed a ROM/kernel.
I have been using Wakelock Detector to track my battery life. Of most significance is com.baidu.map.location (NetworkLocation). I have attached the two screenshots showing the frequency of how often it wakes up my device. I tried to greenify it but it wouldn't allow me - it says "Sorry, "NetworkLocation" is ingreenifiable". Does anyone have any idea for me?
I have also been trying to use Amplify as another means to try and improve battery life. As mentioned, my phone is rooted, and the app prompted me to install the Xposed app which I did. However, after installing the app, it wants me to install the framework but it does not allow me to. I have attached the screenshot of this too.
Nova Launcher - Sometimes when I open the app drawer, the resolution of the app launcher appears funny. To fix it, I normally just press back and go back into the app drawer and it goes back to normal. I have attached a screenshot of what this roughly looks like. This is not a big deal but can be a little annoying. Has anyone experienced this?
SD Maid - I used to use this app on my old Galaxy S3 i9305 to clear out storage space taken up by unnecessary stuff. This app no longer works on this phone. I have attached a screenshot of the issue that I am having.
I have downloaded Auto Call Recorder from the app store with the intention of having it automatically record my phone conversations. It does not work but I am unable to figure out why. I have checked the settings and I cannot identify any obvious setting that is incorrectly configured.
Flynx - I have been trying to use Flynx as it appears to be an incredibly useful app, but it seems something is not working correctly. In the screenshot that I have attached, where it says "Tap on the bubble to open it!" I am assuming there is a bubble that is supposed to appear for me to tap, but it does not appear.
APUS Launcher/Clean Master - finally and maybe most worryingly, I sometimes get 2 or 3 apps "pushed" to my device prompting me to install it. I can only remember 2 at the moment; APUS Launcher and Clean Master. Fortunately, I am asked to give the app permission for installation but it worries me because it has occurred a few times and I did not download it at all. I do not have a screenshot of this at the moment, but I will do it next time it occurs.
I have been told that my provider (Vaya in Australia) sends out a SMS for "automatic update" purposes. I only spotted this because I have noticed that I was charged for 2 separate international SMS on 2 occasions when I did not send them (to a UK number, +44 7786209730). I am not sure whether this one is a phone problem or something else.
I appreciate any of your assistance in advance and I am sorry if I have not provided enough information. I am also not sure as to which issues may simply be app problems as opposed to a problem with MIUI software or Xiaomi.
Hope I will be able to get some assistance!

Does the crash happen when the dialog opens, or when you click the orange entry?
Try giving your sdcard a name, possibly doing it from a desktop computer.
Hi, the crash happens when I click on "Overview" then click on "To start press [refresh icon]" and then you just press there - what normally happens is it will give a overall summary of the phone.
However, I have just tried it again. When that error message comes up, instead of tapping on the listed entry (as is instructed), I press "Done" and it is able to give me a summary!
So for some reason it appears as though it doesn't work (at least from the error message), and I just press done and it still works.
Thanks for your reply nevertheless! Would not have figured that out had you not replied hahaha.
If you just press "done", SD Maid won't have access to your external sdcard.
Did you try installing the Xiaomi EU rom, since it's supposed to be cleaned from chinese apps (Like the baidu one).
Hi all,
Sorry it seems like I never came back to expand what I have done to try and fix these problems.
I ended up changing to Hermes ROM here http://www.smiui.net/redminote2_hermes.php
Most of the issues above are now solved, but there are some that are still present such as #2 and #5. So Amplify still doesn't work, but I think this is a hardware limitation and Auto Call Recorder still doesn't work. As for why Auto Call Recorder doesn't work, I don't know why, but I am not greatly bothered by it so I have not attempted to do anything to resolve that problem.
Greetings,
About a day or two ago, I noticed that my alarm (Gentle Alarm) stopped working, meaning that the app seemed fine but the scheduled alarm time would come and go with nothing happening. Thinking it was an app issue, I tried several other alarm programs, including stock Clock, with the same result. No alarms actually went off. I have a ZTE Axon 7 running 7.1.1 stock on T-mobile.
It gets weirder. The same behavior began at the same time on my girlfriend's phone—Samsung (S4 or S5) with stock Lollipop (not sure of version number) on Verizon. I mean, we both tried a bunch of different clock apps, set alarms, and watched the times come and go with no actual alarm.
Needless to say, up until a couple days ago, we had no issues with alarm apps. Neither of us has updated the OS in that time period (or recently at all). We've both updated and installed some apps, but there was no overlap between us, so there didn't seem an obvious app that could be causing issues.
Also, a few other weird symptoms have shown up in the same time period; no idea if this is related in any way, but here goes. On the Axon, when I try to install from Play I get 100% downloaded and then...nothing. When I reboot the phone, I have a notification that the new app is installed. Also over the last couple of days I keep getting repeat notifications for things that are hours old. For example, I have gotten the same Facebook notifications several times over the course of 8 or 10 hours, and as I went to bed last night around midnight I was still getting MLB At Bat notifications (score changes, etc.) for the game I listened to mid afternoon.
On the Samsung, my g/f is sending texts that her phone reports as undelivered even after I (and others) have read and responded to them. The texts themselves seem to be very delayed in going out.
And to reiterate, all these issues have cropped up just in the last couple days on both phones. It would seem a virus might explain things; on the other hand I haven't used any public WiFi in that time period (or recently at all), all my downloads have been through Play and not of any (what I would consider) suspicious apps, and I run Lookout to scan all my app installs. As for my g/f, I think all she has done is update a few apps from Play that she has used for quite a while, and I don't think she has used a public WiFi, either.
I appreciate any help you can offer. We had to resort to using her work iPhone as an alarm clock this morning, which is just mortifying.
Thanks,
CJW
