Battery saver killing bluetooth connections (Amazfit watch & VW Connect apps) ?? - Xiaomi Poco F1 Questions & Answers

I have the Xiaomi Amazfit Stratos watch, which worked well with my old Mi A1. However, since getting the Poco F1 notifications to the watch do not work (unless the app is open in the foreground). In addition, the VW Connect app (also a background app that uses GPS and connects automatically) did not pick up any trips made since using pairing with the new phone....
This made me think it was something to do with the MIUI battery saver settings. Since then I have changed the settings on both these apps to 'No restrictions' and it has made a slight improvement (I would say about 50% of the notifications are making it to the phone now). So I am at a bit of a loss now....
You would assume that a smartwatch made by Xiaomi would work seamlessly with a phone of the same manufacturer.... but it seems not!
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Amazfit 2 Stratos battery issues - suspect software bug - reset daily helps

Hi, i have a new Amazfit 2 Stratos with official international firmware US FW (2.3.2.7) and noticed cases where the battery would rapidly drain within hours, for example I would go to sleep with 60% battery and 6-7 hours later it would be on 5%...
I then noticed that if i reset the device, the rapid battery drain would stop, for example i noticed a rapid drain of 10 % an hour, so i reset the device and it stopped draining the battery...
Which made me think there is a stuck process or some firmware issue that keeps draining the battery, and I now reset my device every morning which makes it lasts days.
Anyone else noticing battery drain issues?
Having the same issue. What watch face are you using? I'm trying to narrow down the issue.
I've noticed the same after converting from Chinese to US. I'm thinking it might be caused by WiFi (or something using it) as it didn't start happening until I added my network.
...
try to install Task Manager and you can kill some processes which are maybe draining your battery. I use it as i have plenty of apps there.
I found the cause - the data sync. Each time you access the app on your phone, it syncs the data.
When you disable the wifi/data connection on your cell and access the app (while watch is paired), it tries to sync and fails. Problem is that it seems to be stuck in a loop until data connection is available and by then the battery depletes rapidly.
Solution - don't access the app while there is no connection in your phone to wifi/data.
Not sure if this is the only case when the watch syncs data - it might be syncing it automatically each day at a specific time - will post more info if i find out.
I also don't know if this bug is caused by the new firmware or not because i received the watch only last week and immediately updated to the new version based on the notification in the app.
It seems there is also a difference in battery use when using different watch faces. For example, I've observed that a watch face with no temperature will consume less battery than with a watch face with a temperature reading.
Anyone with similar experience?
I've bought an Amazfit Pace that sufered from same issue, te battery starts to drain all the way down in a couple of hours, so i returned it and decided to buy the Stratos, and guess what?
I have exact the same issue.
Tryed some things and i think the cause is related with smartphone bluetooth, in my case OnePlus 5T bluetooth.
If i desconnect smartphone bluethoot it stops draining, if i put it on again it starts draining again, if restart smartphone it stays good until it happen again next day or so.
Problem with battery discharge Amazfit 2
Hi, I also have a battery discharge problem. The watch battery will start to discharge quickly when I turn on the amazfit application on my phone. When the phone is restarted and I do not go to the Amazfit application, the watch connects everything works and the flashlight is ok, I turn on the application amazfit and the torch goes down. Tonight I put the plane on the phone and plugged in only the bluetooth and my watch was discharged in the morning. The red bar at the bottom of the amazfit app only appears when I'm not connected to the internet, I'm connected all the time. I have amazfit 2 China, recorded by Rom 2.0.14.0, Amazfit Watch 3.0.0 and HUAWEI Mate 10 lite
So it has exactly the same bug as the first one... (and I have it on my wrist). Well time to go back to regular (but expensive for nothing) watches

Basically what usually cause these problems are wither data sync issues or a problem with Bluetooth/WiFi.

I noticed the same issue with my pace on my OP5 after à phone update. Tried to reset, pair un pair still the same.
Issue was removed after oxygenos 5.1.0 but immediately back after last oxos 5.1.1
To move on I paires the watch to my xiaomi mi5 on global stable rom Android 7, all is fine.
Seems many phones are bt broken with oreo.

I think too, that this is some sync related issue. If I check the watch data in the Amazfit app, then the watch starts to drain with 2-3% per hour. However if I exit the app and turn off Bluetooth on the phone till the notification icon and the watch show disconnected and then turn back BT to get the watch connected again, the battery consumption goes back to normal.
Opening the app again starts the battery drain issue again.
I wrote it already in another thread here, I own an Amazfit Pace, of course with battery drain issues. So I tested a bit. When the phoneapp is syncing it shows an information field at the bottom, this field becomes green when finished. But a few seconds later another datasync is made, not shown in the app but indicated by network speedmeter in androids statusbar. I think weather is syncing there but if you aren't aware of this and close the phoneapp before this second sync is finished, the watch runs into battery drain.
Since I wait 10 seconds after the app shows the green sync complete field I never had drain issues again.
amazfit watch app
I have the opposite problem. My phone battery drains like crazy. I have the Stratos for 2 days /int. version/. It works great, battery life is excellent. I suspect the Amazfit Watch App /Android/ is the culprit. I have to charge my phone 2-3 times daily??!
I think my Stratos worked fine until I activated the 'continuous HR' feature (and switched it off again). Before that, it would easily last for 5 days on a full charge. But I also get these fast drains now.
I restarted the watch a couple of times, let's see if this did it.
I've had the same issue a while ago (also after testing the continuous HR feature), and there I really had to reset the watch and reboot 3 times to get it back to normal again.

Something is breaking the Bluetooth connection between phone and watch, the most common cases are WiFi interferences (test with phone in Airplane mode and only BT on and see if battery usage is OK on phone) or corrupted data when syncing to the cloud (open Amazfit app and check if syncing is OK - you should see a green bar at the bottom -, you may need to unpair - it will delete all data on watch - then pair again and answer NO when it asks to restore old data).
Indeed seems bt is corrupted. When draining occurs, even if I switch off the bt from the phone, the icon on the watch says it is still connected. Again for me this does not occur on nougat, only when pairing with oreo device.

Mate 10 Pro - GPS issues

Hi,
as soon as I bought this phone I am struggling with making the GPS receiver working properly in app such as Starava and Endomondo. Mate constantly drops the signal for couple of seconds. I tried different solutions such as:
apps->ignore battery optimization
manage the apps (running in the background) manually
Strava works without autopause
last used apps -> padlock is set to locked
Below you will see a compare of a proper signal (red) and Mate's (blue) with a lot of losses.
Please help as it is very annoying 'feature'.

I have exactly the same experience. My (new) Mate 10 Pro has far worse GPS accuracy than my (previous) Galaxy S7 Edge.
Tried many possible solutions, nothing helps. Shame on you, Huawei!! :crying:
I don't use these apps but I remember the same complaints about Mate 9. A joke that it hasn't been sorted out yet!
Mate 10 lite garbage gps
Same issues with endomondo amd my huawei mate 10 lite.... Gps loosing signal when running in the park, but no issues with gps driving applications... Instead of 3.14 km it shows me only 2 km, it is loosing signal every 5 mins.
Same thing here, bought mate 10 pro (bla-l29) 3 weeks ago and besides its great camera and other stuff, this problem with gps and strava is so annoying.
Here are two pics, first from a bike ride, with numerous spikes, and other, walking, where red line is gps track from the mate and cyan is actual track that I was walking.
I have sent a question today to the official croatian huawei forum, but I don't expect some remedy. Maybe a new Android Pie and EMUI 9,which is scheduled to arrive in my country on 14 December fixes that issue, otherwise I'm thinking on selling the thing, because I'm quite often on my bike and trekking in nature.
Edit: Since I'm a new member, can't post external links to pics, sorry.
My mate 10 works great with GPS.. In the car or walking. Even in the train..
Is GPS dropping only while the screen is off (or app in background)? If rooted, the solution is to disable the Power Genius app using either Titanium Backup or Service Disabler (and then reboot). If not rooted, you can try via ADB but I'm not sure it will work.
"Ignore Battery Optimization" affects Android's built-in battery optimization. Power Genius is responsible for Huawei's built-in battery optimization features - which don't increase your battery life but do cause issues with GPS, music playback, screen brightness, etc.

There are two things which can be done, one is to manage apps manually (via battery settings) and other with that "Ignore Battery Optimization".
So you are saying both are standard android features, nothing to do with Power Genius service?
Yesterday I've allowed "Ignore Battery Optimization" for Strava, restarted the phone (as suggested on many places after this), and went for a short test ride. It seems that there are definitely less spikes than before, but still there were two of them on a 5km trip. And the GPS accuracy is still not satisfying. The screen was locked, as was always on my previous Samsung A5 and all iPhones before that.
I've tried disabling the lock screen few days before, but during walking. Half trip the screen was on, half off. I didn't notice any difference. During walking there were no spikes, but the accuracy was very bad, the track had two very strange off-paths in order of 40-50 meters.
Static accuracy of GPS is always ok, in several apps. But dinamic gps tracking is bad.
I'll try Endomondo, other app for the same purpose and post results here.
"Ignore Battery Optimization" is an Android feature.
"Launch" (manage apps manually) is an EMUI feature.
"Power Genius" is a separate EMUI feature. Amongst other things, it uses an algorithm to determine what apps and processes should be killed off when they are in the background. But it is artificial intelligence that is not intelligent - when you are streaming music, it kills processes necessary for bluetooth music playback. If you use an app like Google Maps, it gets killed off like clockwork after so many minutes in the background.
There are sometimes ways to manipulate it, i.e. I think it looks at how long a process has been running, how many apps are running in the background, whether the phone is being charged. But generally, there is no downside to disabling it if you are rooted.
I am relatively new to Huawei, Power Genius is the main reason I would never be inclined to recommend a Huawei device to a lay person who did not intend to root it, or what not.
Oh, bummer.
Well, I'll test some more, with Strava and Endomondo, and if nothing improves, I'll see whether to consider rooting, or that ADB thing, or replacing it for Samsung S8.
I don't have experience with rooting, but I jailbreaked every iPhone I had, my occupation is software developer, recently changed the firm and now beginning to develop under Android studio, so i think I could do that. But I'm afraid it could be pure GPS problem, either hardware or software, I'm not sure.
If I leave the screen on during the ride, and problems persist, can we exclude Power Genius and blame GPS receiver or code responsible for it?
The phone has a problem with the GPS, thats for sure. Even after the Pie update, nothing changed. I personally had no issues with killing apps, but overall GPS accuracy is very poor. For example, Im walking down the road on a left sidewalk, google maps says Im on the right side of the road. Thats about 10 meters away ! And in a open space with no obsticles. Definitely a HW issue

[BIP] Call notifications without location?

Hi,
I am trying to work around Mi Fit requiring location to connect to the BIP. I don't usually have location on (and don't want to) and every night when I set flight mode the connection is lost and notifications won't work until I enable location again and Mi Fit connects.
So, is there an app that does not require location to connect to the BIP? I asked Amazfit support and they said it is necessary - but didn't say what for.
If not, would it be possible to trick Mi Fit into "thinking" that location is on? Would there be an app to do that? I've seen apps to fake GPS location, but what I'd like to do is make Mi Fit read location as enabled (and maybe remember last location obtained?) without having location really enabled.
Any ideas on how to keep the connection between the phone and the watch without enabling location every time are welcome.
Thanks!
In case anyone wonders, I got it to connect by connecting to the watch via Bluetooth settings. First I had to force stop Mi Fit, then go to Settings, Bluetooth and link the phone to the Bip. Then, reopen Mi Fit and it connects everytime you expect it to
Cheers!

Smart watches compatability

I had a Ticwatch E before switching to the mix 3 but using it on the mix 3 now I've had so many connectivity issues. Sometimes I'd get notifications and then sometimes the watch would disconnect, just wondering if anyone is using a smart watch that doesn't have these issues or if this is just an issue with the mix 3 and ticwatches.
Thanks
My moto 360 1st gen has also some issues.

No problems at all here with a Huawei Watch 2 Classic
Amazfit Pace and no problem
Dont know what happens but now All Apps works and the notification grafics are now perfekt again. No more Problems with transpatency

I had some connection issues as well.
I figured out that it only loses connection when I kill all apps and so i tinkered with a few settings:
- disable power-saving for wear OS app
- enable auto start for wear OS
It still loses the connection if you kill all apps but reconnects as soon as you check your watch.
It never loses the connection if I don't kill apps (anymore?).
Hope that helps!

True, but than you have to open the app in general while it is never actively opened otherwise.
Same thing with automatic started music that gets killed, even when you don't have your player open.
I've got the Galaxy Watch (46mm) and I am able to use it but with a caveat; if you unlock the bootloader you MUST root with Magisk in order to hide the fact that the bootloader is unlocked. Otherwise, the Galaxy Wear app and Samsung Pay with not even open, and you won't be able to connect the Galaxy Watch to your phone. If you keep the bootloader locked and don't want root access, it works normally.
I have a Gear 2 I flashed with Android Wear and it's been working perfectly.
My Watch GT doesn't automatically reconnect after I go out of Bluetooth range.
I've whitelisted all apps from the MIUI battery saver and granted all permissions.
I have also LOCKED the Huawei Health app to stop the system from closing it.
Once Bluetooth has disconnected, The ONLY way to get the watch to reconnect, is by opening Huawei Health or toggling the phone's Bluetooth off & on.
Unsure if it's the Huawei Health app or MIUI that is at fault.
Very frustrating.
Also using a Galaxy Watch (46mm) and it works great for the most part. You do have to root with Magisk to hide the unlocked bootloader (if you unlocked it). Other than that, for some reason I lose notifications on the watch almost every time I reboot the phone or put it in battery saver/extreme battery saver. This has something to do with the way MIUI handles notification access and is very annoying since the only way to fix it is to disconnect the watch from your phone (as in unlink it which wipes the watch NOT just turn off bluetooth), uninstall the Galaxy Wearable app completely, reboot, then re-install the Galaxy Wearable app, reconnect the watch, and restore my backed up data to the watch. It only takes a few minutes now that I know exactly what fixes it but it is really annoying that I avoid using battery saver and rebooting just to not have to deal with uninstalling and reinstalling the watch. If anyone has any better fix for this please let me know lol.
Does anyone use a FitBit? My wife bought a FitBit Versa and it constantly shows and error about the notifications not being available. She has to constantly reboot the phone to get notifications working correctly.

I bought the FitBit Versa and had to return it due to notifications never working, even with all battery saving options disabled it just didn't work. Picked up the Galaxy Watch Active instead and that works perfectly, I'd recommend it instead if you still have the option of returning the FitBit. Used it with MIUI at first which worked perfectly after disabling the battery saving features.
I'm now rooted with Pixel Experience, had to download an older version of Samsung Pay to get it to work without detecting root and it's working great on that too.

Bad bluetooth connection with Amazfit and Bip/Bip S

I've been using an Amazfit Bip together with the Mi Fit app for a long time without any problems. The Bip hardly ever lost connection to the phone. Then I bought an Amazfit Bip S and as the Mi Fit app does not support it, I had to use the Amazfit app. I recognized that the Bip S permanently lost bluetooth connection to the phone, no matter what settings I changed. So I thought it would be a problem of the Bip S and bought a normal Bip again. But same problem... if the phone does not lie directly on the table, most of the time Bip has no bluetooth connection. Even if the phone is in its case on my belt, the Bip loses connection.
So it must have something to do with the Amazfit app, I guess. Somewhere I read that if you uninstall and reinstall it, Bluetooth connection problems may be gone. But if I uninstall the app, I lose all data, so before I do that I try to investigate what could be the problem.
The phone is a Blackview BV9700 Pro. I already cleared all data and cache of the Bluetooth app. I restarted the phone. I turned Bluetooth off and on again. I turned the option for a permanent notification in the Amazfit app on and off, makes no difference.
Can anyone confirm that the Amazfit app has a bad Bluetooth connection compared to the Mi Fit app? Could the problem be caused because both apps were installed at the same time at the beginning? I had Mi Fit installed, installed Amazfit and because the Bip was recognized by both apps I uninstalled Mi Fit and kept only Amazfit.

Hello,
Few things:
- I would recommend you to use only one App, AmazFit or MiFit at a time. I guess AMazFit is preferable depending on the watch you have. Unpair from one app and uninstall the app you don't want to use
- if you uninstall and reinstall the Amazfit or MiFit app with same credentials, Mi account or with mail/phone number, you should recover your data saved and you won't loose all your history. Maybe the one from the current day, I think. I jumped from MiFit to Amzfit with same account with no problem, recovering data for many years
- concerning the bluetooth, not sure what OS your are using, iOS or Android. You could check in the Amazfit or Mi Fit app properties if the OS is not using "battery saver" functions. Sometimes, by default, the battery saving is in "restricted mode" which can affect connections like wifi/bluetooth to save power. Try to see if you have this battery saving function ON and set to "no restrictions" - at least this is what I do on my Android phone.

The phone uses Android 9. The Amazfit app is not restricted by any battery saving modes as I put it on "Not optimized" just like the Mi Fit app before.
