What benefit other than extra storage would you expect?
The card is pricey compared to standard Micro SD cards but high end phones for the most part stopped offering the expanded memory option because it has the potential to seriously slow down a phone.
I'm using my 128GB card just for media storage (I don't think it is intended for running apps) and so far I'm very happy with it. I don't notice any difference running media from the card compared with the internal storage and having storage free is always a good thing with Android phones.
The card also worked out to be much cheaper than buying the 256GB version of the phone, at least for me.

It does not give you the option of using the card as part of the phone's internal memory which is normally what ends up causing problems--but that also means the card might not be useful for people looking to install a ton of games or other apps.
When a memory card is treated as internal memory you can't move anything to it and apps are installed on it by the system but it's always slower than the physical memory--and if the card starts to go bad it can make your device unstable.
I think Huawei wanted to minimize the possibility of the memory card causing any problems on the M20P and one of the easiest ways to do that is to make sure owners can't use third party memory cards.

Yes suppliers are the most important part. I bought a "brand" but it was Counterfeit. I was able to get money back when I confronted the seller who feigned innocence but he was quick to refund
I got a class 4 32gb with a tiny usb adapter since all my card readers didn't handle the shdc cards. Now I have 5000 songs + backups and 2gb free.

I've seen others comment on the 64GB (and up?) microsdxc cards working on the Evo3D but figured there were no details.
Periodically on Best Buy - the Sandisk Class 6 64gb card has gone on sale for $100. I ended up biting and installed it in my Evo3D this week. Initially - the card registers as being "damaged" in the operating system. But tapping on the notice gives you the option to format the card, and you just have to be persistent - eventually the card will format and be fully functional.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/searchp...p=&qp=&list=n&iht=y&usc=All+Categories&ks=960
I figured I'd comment on the speed. I was previously using a 32GB PNY Class 10 memory card which was not living up to it's speed rating. Using SD tools - the card would only write at 7 megs/second. Which was consistent with other user reports - but still disappointing.
I'd heard that Sandisk has a habit of underrating their cards - so I hoped this class 6 might actually exceed the speed of the PNY card. I would be disappointed. SD tools consistently reports the write speed of this card at 5.5MB/S.
That said - I'm happy with my purchase. I'm very pleased with the additional storage this card gives me and I've yet to see any downfall to the speed of the card - except for the few times I transfer large amounts of content at once. This card is storing my full 23 GB music collection - and still has room for a ton of HD video and games. For anyone curious - this card plays 1080P sample videos flawlessly while using Diceplayer.
I'll keep looking to see if they go on sale any time soon. If they hit the $100 mark, can you post a reminder here for us? (If you happen to see it)

Will do. I'm curious if our phone will be capable of accessing even larger cards. I'm also hopeful that ICS will allow us to more easily format the card EXFAT so we can have HD files above 4GB. My cheap Chinese Android tablet can easily handle NTFS - so I wish it were possible on the phone.
Hmm that hadn't even occurred to me yet, but I agree. That would be a great bonus with ICS!
Also, do they even make cards larger than that yet? I'm on my phone so can't search all that well until I get home. (promise I'm not that lazy lol)

You probably already got home and researched it, but they don't yet make micro SD cards that big yet, but the theoretical max for microsdxc is 2TB. I'm just pleasantly surprised that our phone can handle the new format.

Sorry I didn't report it out . . . I didn't want to be responsible in case our phone didn't work with the card. If it pops up on sale again (it's happened twice since Christmas) - I'll post.
The compatibility issue was just that the card came in formatted EXFAT. Formatting to FAT32 fixed the issue right away. I really wish a future kernel or firmware would allow EXFAT support - so files larger than 4GB could be played. I have a cheap chinese tablet that handles EXFAT and NTFS no problem.
not quite as good....

That's the same card, yes. It's gone on sale for $100 a couple of times on Bestbuy this year - hence the reason for this thread.

There is another one who fell for the 10 rating. PNY also makes a card specifically for smartphones. It is same price as the 10. I get about 18 write high 20 read. SanDisk you can look for about 6 write12 or so read but they hold up good from what I'm told. Personally I think PNY makes best card now but a lot new ones will be out within year. I'd like to try Samsung when it arrives. Everyone will be using cloud or some type online storage soon. I'd say there won't be much use for bigger cards but wtf do I know? Just guess......

I picked mine up at Best Buy around the holidays for $99.
Just remember to format it from the phone, not the computer . I lost all my previous data because I forgot to.
Grr.
I got a 64GB SanDisk card from Best Buy. It was in the usual cardboard FrustratorExtreme-pack.
It won't format. Not on the phone, not on Windows, not on Linux.
It looks like the device is permanently write-protected. Fdisk appears to write a new partition table, but no...
Windows thinks it's a 32MB unformatted disk that is write-protected. That's 32MB, not 32GB, and this is a 64GB card.
BestBuy:
The problem is not with Windows. It's most likely your card reader. I just got the 64gb sandisk from best buy, put it in my phone, formatted fine.
My usb card reader showed it being a wrong size and unformatted even though I had just formatted it in the phone.
Put it back in the phone and did usb storage through the phone and bam, got my 59.7gb of space.

Yeah 32GB are definitely at a good price point; I bought an excellent SanDisk class 4 from Newegg for $33, and could have saved a few bucks with a less reputable brand.
I haven't seen prices drop at all on microSDXC cards in the last four months. I'm not holding my breath at this point that they'll be priced competitively with smaller cards any time soon.

Have you ever seen anyone selling a 128GB microSDXC? I don't think there is any technological limitation of the phone that would prevent your phone from reading even larger cards, as long as you can format them with a supported filesystem, and the SDXC standard allows up to 2TB. The limitations are just based on what's available.

Note does not see sd card contents
Having a little trouble with the external card being seen by the Note. I have a samsung 32 GB, class 10. I have pics loaded, ringtones and apks on it. Pics and apks are in the root of the card. Ebooks are in a folder called ebooks. Ringtones are in a folder- Forget how labeled, but copied from my infuse card. They work correctly.
My app installer does not see the apks. Gallery does not see the pics, but the ringtones are selectable by the settings thru contacts or setting sounds. STock ebook reader does not see my ebooks that are in a folder "ebooks".
With the file explorer on the note was able to open the sd card and install the apks manually.
How do I get the note to see the stuff on the external card?

Some of sdcards are on sale in bestbuy.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/promo/select-memory-cards-11015
Also worth searching Amazon -- many options for SDXC cards up through 256GB, wide range of prices depending on max transfer rate.
I want to change my 256GB MicroSD card to a 400GB one but my supplier says it won't work in the M5.
I don't think there is a reason why it shouldn't but has anyone tried a 400GB and can confirm it's working?
works fine in mine. i have never had an issue putting in a larger sd card no matter that the manufacturer said was compatible
It works..but without root it's totally unnecessary cause huawei doesn't allow "app2sd"
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mediapad-m5/help/apps-to-sd-t3795227
i do have mine rooted. I never bother to move apps to the sd card. I do however keep a 100gb of music, tons of video, and like to keep twrp backups for a long time. So it is easy to run out space on a 256gb card.

My 256GB card only has 218GB usable storage when formatted with ext2FS instead of the expected 238GB.
Why is that?

My 256GB card only has 218GB usable storage when formatted with ext2FS instead of the expected 238GB.
Why is that?

I have the Samsung brand card. You need to be careful buying no name cards especially on eBay. There are a lot of counterfeit ones out there that will read as the large advertise in your PC but are actually smaller ones.

Ok thank you for the advice.
I ll try to buy the card from a local store or sold by amazon and not a reseller.
My tablet is not rooted, do you think it will make a difference for the 512GB SD card to be recognized properly ?

All my tablets and phones are rooted, so I can't say 100%. ...but at least 99% sure it won't make a difference.
Usually vendors are listening supported sd cards available at the moment of the device release. Over the years, I'm using high capacity sd cards in many devices which are not supporting them officially. Never had an issue. Only couple of times had to format it in the device itself.

Ihave to buy microSD or sdxc?
I would say (maybe not completely correct) that microsd is describing physical format, sdxc or similar technical specifications, like speed. Sdxc should work. I can check later which type I have.
