Hi, I know people are using the Mate 20 Pro here in the States but I'm not finding a lot of info on things that definitely work, things that definitely don't work, etc. I was wondering if things like VoLTE, Wifi Calling, and Visual voicemail work with any carriers at all in the states? Is there a specific carrier that is recognized as working better with the bands in this particular phone?
Thanks

All 3 things you listed weren't working on my mate 20 pro on T-MOBILE before I sent it in for replacement. Also speeds were much lower on speed test compared to my son's OnePlus 6t side by side on cellular. Like 4-6 down vs 25 on LTE. But I never noticed without the speed test.
I'm on T-Mobile U..S with the L29 and Visual Voice Mail works.
VoLTE is not available, there's another thread here that discusses why.
I've never seen WIFI calling work on a non T-Mobile branded device

Another One Plus plug slipped with no sublety into the Mate 20 Pro thread. And by a newly created XDA account. Nothing suspicious about that.

I'm on T-Mobile network via Mint Mobile. I don't get visual voicemail with my budget carrier. WiFi calling and Volte don't work--although Volte worked with the P20 Pro so a future software update could change the Volte situation but don't think WiFi calling is ever likely to work.
Phone reception on the T-Mobile network is excellent for me. Network speed is excellent, GPS works great...but if you need Volte and WiFi calling you should probably look elsewhere (but not at the 6T unlesss you want to waste $600 on a $300 Oppo phone with an upgraded CPU).
Some people think the Canadian version of the Mate 20 Pro might support WiFi calling on T-Mobile but I have the UK model.

LOL. I feel like you're insinuating that I don't have a mate 20 pro, or am being paid by OnePlus. LOL.
Even with the 3 points above. I still choose the mate 20 pro over the 6T for myself. I only compared the OnePlus 6t because I got 2 for my son and son in law in the last month. And we've been comparing them.
The better screen resolution, better battery and efficient processor, and amazing camera still keeps me choosing the Mate 20 pro.
I had the option to return or replace the Mate 20 pro I sent back to Clove this week after inspection. I chose the replacement. I would have liked the flat screen allowing for a tempered glass screen protector. But you can't have it all.

I'm also curious why it posted from my XDA app under another account. I've been a member since 2011. steadly2004, not steadly200401..... weird. Currently I'm logged on via my laptop. *edit* figured it out. I had clicked to log in with google, which created another account when the old one wasn't associated. I just had to Un-associate the newly created one and log into the OG one. Then re-associate. And thank you for pointing that out, I didn't realize it was even occurring.
Looks like you've been a member for 3 years, I've been for 7. Although, you're more active than I am.

Wifi calling works on plenty of non branded devices. All I've ever bought are non branded devices and the Mate 20 Pro is the first to not have wifi calling on TMobile. Although this phone isn't really sold in the US so that's probably why.
Edit: with regards to wifi calling, if you do need it on TMobile, there's always the Digits app which is free. Just log in and everything is routed through wifi (calling and texts). It's a great app and I wonder why it's not too well known.

You could always try the Whitestone dome glass screen protector. I have it on my note 9 after the oleophobic coating wore off (too much gaming wears it off pretty quick) and it fits like a glove. Works with a case too. Some have complained about it peeling off, but it works great for me.
I tried the whitstone dome glass on my pixel 2 XL. It was very nice and smooth, but chipped easily, On the corners. Not sure why but the glass just seemed like it wasn't tempered or was too thin. I might end up trying it again. I think there are some non US brands that are comparable to whitstone. They were mentioned in the screen protector section.

The only way that you'll be able to do this is by buying the device outright (off contract) and then requesting a SIM unlock from AT&T. Otherwise, you're going to have to buy the device and wait a minimum of 3 months before you can get it unlocked.

That is precisely what I did and my plan was. After calling they said I need to have 6 months of active service before they will give it time me. I am looking for other options
Root?
Besides unlocking this device, is there any word about rooting floating around for AT&T's Asus Padfone X?

6 months now???!!! That's ridiculous. I get that they are trying to maintain exclusivity with the device (which is just plain stupid, imho), but 6 months of service???
I absolutely love mine, but not enough to have to deal with those terms. Sorry mate.

Towelroot works perfectly. However, don't expect too much. I rotted mine and went about changing the launcher and such and completely borked the device. I had to do a factory reset on it. Seems that Dynamic Display relies heavily on the ASUS Launcher.

I got a friend that has ATT to check it out. They were ok with him unlocking it because he does have service with them however they couldnt register the IMEI because they need proof of use on their network before they will give out the code. The dont want someone to just by a device and automatically take it to another network. Legere was right the other day.. They will rape you and they are greedy bastards.
If I paid full retail no discounts for a device I should be able to do whatever I want with it. You made your money off me already. Let me do what I please
Cool. Good to know theres at least a way.

3 month rule does not apply to ATT. You have to wait for the duration of the contract or pay off the phone if you are on the next program.

The phone does not have to be on your account for 60 days. You just have to be an att subscriber and the account in good standing for 60 days. They cannot provide a code to a non att subscriber. mainly because it doesn't work that way. You can get the full details about device unlock at Http://www.att.com/deviceunlock

Exceptions can be made for certain customers that must travel internationally...specifically for military, or goodwill/missionary work. If your convincing enough you can get it done
I had a lengthy conversation with AT&T as well as a BBB complaint filed against them for just this reason.
A subsidy lock is placed on all devices regardless if it is subsidized or not. They will provide an unlock code only if you meet their ransom demand of 3 full months of promptly paid service on the device in question on their network after paying full retail value for the handset. At that point you can request an unlock code and in 5 to 10 business days you will receive the unlock code by email. So basically you can finally migrate to T-Mobile or another carrier with the device after about 100 days of ownership of a device with an average expected usage of only 365 days.
when speaking to a representative from the office of the president of AT&T Mobility in regards to the BBB complaint I was told this and I quote verbatim what was told to me "If you don't like our terms for sale of an AT&T branded headset you can always choose to buy from another company with terms more favorable to you."
Is unlocking going to be very effective on other US networks?
I mean, if it can barely call/text and would have poor to no LTE/usable mobile data, is it really going to be worthwhile to unlock? That's been the problem with importing previous Padfone models, and I find it hard to believe that an AT&T-exclusive device would be much different...
Granted, I hope that's not the case, because my AT&T contract is almost up and I really need a device upgrade...

It should work perfectly on other US networks. Imported models don't have the necessary data frequencies for all US networks (especially Tmobile). I'm buying the padfone e (dual sim, quadband wcdma) and using it as my backup phone and primary tablet. I'll use my K910 as a hotspot if I really need mobile data but my tablets are primarily used on wifi.

But how do we actually know if it'll work well? Do we have access to the white sheets, or some other listing of it's supported frequencies?
It just seems like, if it's only on AT&T in the US, then it's probably built for AT&T and less compatible than we'd like.
any hope for non at customers?

I could only find Unlookitnow, but dont' Know if it works... l ended up ordering a Padfone S instead
Sent from my ASUS_T00N using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
As previously advised I am a Tmo customer I used a friends ATT account as a means to get around the unlocking. After about a 1 1/2 months of having ATT open cases and reviewing the account to have it unlocked, it did get unlocked.
This was not an easy feat at all. Literally took calling in almost every other day, speaking with "supervisors/managers" making many complaints to have it resolved.
The concept is annoying that I have to but the device full price and cant do what I want with my device. Glad the unlocking bill was passed even though there will still be a lot of red tape from carriers to get codes.
I am using Tmo LTE and havent had any data issues w/ us bands. Again it was a process, however I ddnt have to spend anymore than what I paid for the device and grateful for my friend for helping me with that.

Hello guys,
Bought Mate 20 Pro recently. Apart from my frustration with HiVision missing on my device and OEM unlock grayed out, I have found that I cannot use / register my VISA / Mastercard with the phone's NFC and use it for paying... Seems that the Google Pay app is not compatible - cannot find it in the store on this phone. Phone is bought from Europe, so EMEA variant. No OEM software available to serve this purpose (like SamsungPay)?
Am I missing something?

Have you tried downloading Safety Net Check app from Google Playstore and see if it is all successful? I'm also having issues with Google pay with the recent 9.0.0.168 firmware update and now I get an error when trying to add a card to Google Pay NFC.
I'm getting CTS profile mismatch failure in that safety net check.
Probably different from your issue but maybe can help pinpoint the issue further?

Well it's the best flagship I've ever used. So much so it's the first time ever I'm keeping my phone longer than a year. You clearly have a faulty handset or bought an import that isn't compatible with some of your local apps.

Yeah i had the phone replaced this morning and the difference is HUGE (huge is not a strong enough word for it). The processor seems to have had a manufacturing fault that caused most of my problems. Though google pay on the replaced device keeps saying it is not compatible but huawei tech guys said it is probably a sim card issue (???), i will have that replaced.. the defective phone i had was crazy slow and jittery and many many issues with signal strength https connections, etc... If i find a sollution to the google pay app i will post an update here

Google Pay: apparently, to use it in the US, you need to go to Settings / More / Secure Element Position / use HCE wallet. The default SIM wallet gets rejected everywhere (you get "insert chip card" or "card read error"). The supposedly more secure "Secure Element" doesn't register at any terminals I encountered. Could be that the tech is too new to have support. I don't know I figured this out today after forgetting my wallet and having the gas tank empty sign pop up...
Now for carrier support - I'm in Houston, Texas. So far, I'm on MINT wireless (T-Mobile MVNO). It gets great LTE everywhere - 63.9MBps down 27.6 up at my house inside the 610 loop on a Saturday evening. In Katy, TX (west of Houston) I'm getting 13.2MBps down 8.1 up at 1045AM Monday inside a huge office building. For reference, my Moto Z2 Force on Sprint basically gets similar results and its modem is optimized for Sprint's LTE network aggregation. So I'd say that's a win.
I checked all the bands and towers prior to ordering. The missing T-Mobile US bands are B66 and B71 - these happen to be only on towers that have the Mi 9 supported bands (B2 B4 B12). I.e., you won't have B66 if you don't already have a supported band. B71 is using old over the air TV frequencies so it isn't available in most markets to begin with, as there are still TV stations occupying the band. I checked all the tower maps across the country and it looks like pretty solid coverage although I haven't gone cross country with the phone yet.
Now you can use AT&T or Cricket (MVNO) and it only is missing band 30. Apparently this can matter in congested markets but the phone supports carrier band aggregation so you are likely not to notice much difference. Anyone with experience please post your results.
Here's the link to check frequency support if you desire to see for yourself. Finding the actual towers is more work zooming in on towers to see the bands available...

Hope this helps some of you out!
Oh another side note - Google Maps works BEST in low drain mode - i.e. internal GPS mode. Saves battery and is accurate all over my area. If I do high accuracy weird things start happening. Not complaining this is a plus as it adds battery life by mistake

Yeah just get a Global Version from a reputable source - like Gearbest. I have a 64gb the 128gb is more popular. No SD Card storage and this takes the best 4k video according to benchmarks. 64gb is running $500 at the moment in Blue. I didn't use shipping insurance, they packed it VERY well, took about 10 days to get here (hybrid USPS / FedEx Smart post is free). I like the MIUI custom interface some don't. It's clean and full of cool features like clearing RAM, exploring you folders, remote app to control all your TVs. I keep Mi Cloud off and use Google Photos and backup.
There's also a few used ones 128gb on eBay but be careful - ensure they are legit and not Chinese ones flashed with Global ROMs. Common issue that's why I say go official...

Well they are cheaper for a reason. They aren't designed to be used out of China. They are missing a band (can't recall which one). They have to unlock the bootloader (15 day wait) before flashing it or have to do it some unofficial way. If you lock the BL on Global Official it will brick the Chinese phone.
Now if you want to mod it and stay on Xiaomi.eu custom ROMs then you'd be alright. Just check for the missing band I don't know if it's US or EU...
But keep in mind they can install whatever ROM or spyware or ads they want. Do you want to take that chance? If you don't care and want to install Xiaomi.eu right away get knowledgeable and don't enter anything (banking info etc) before flashing. The cheapest Chinese one I found on sale was $426 and the reviews "looked" positive on Alibaba but digging deeper tons of phone issues and no warranty service or DOA service. 45-60 day delivery times. I said screw that and paid more for a reputable source. Of course it's your choice.

You'd do fine with the 64GB Global. It takes 2 SIM cards right off the bat. Most people don't know you can just use Google Photos (you may need it from the Play Store) and it will store all your high res photos for free saving space on the device. https://www.gearbest.com/cell-phones/pp_009200231138.html?wid=1349303 you can use Topcashback for 3.5% off if you want. https://www.topcashback.com/ref/mslezak and use a cash back credit card over PayPal for more back. So I got 4.5% off. Or $477.50 total and no sketchy website, great packaging, and tracking.

Awesome! I am still highly considering getting the Mi 9.
I go to this site for freq questions:
https://www.kimovil.com/en/frequency-checker/US/xiaomi-mi-9
I would probably go with the Transparent version, as I have seen it on ebay for the 256GB version for less than $700...
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Xiaomi-Mi-...e-Mobile-LTE-Unlocked-Global-Rom/223482996714
I am REALLY wanting the OnePlus 7 Pro, but if it is more than $750, then I think I will go with the Mi 9.

$645 that's a kick ass phone. My brother has the latest iPhone and Samsung Galaxy I like the Mi 9 more. All your preference. Mi 9 is rated top photos and video by dxomark (https://www.diyphotography.net/xiaomi-mi9-camera-beats-out-the-iphone-xs-max-in-dxo-mark-test/) and is the fastest phone ATM see my 64GB model AnTuTu can't imagine what the extra RAM will do.
Be aware it won't come with Google apps installed although you can add it. Chinese version. You probably will need to unlock the BL (15 day wait) and burn the Xiaomi.eu ROM for best USA support. I don't know how they are selling it that cheap to be honest. $600 on AliExpress +$13 DHL shipping if you trust AliExpress... YMMV https://m.aliexpress.com/item/32999...d=2750amp-F88T4W4zk6Om8WCBZyD3TQ1556644946258

AND it still has the IR blaster, which I REALLY miss from my Lg G5 days. That is actually REALLY valuable when it comes to controlling your TV.
The MAIN reason when I even want the OnePlus 7 Pro at this point is because it is supposed to have UFS 3.0, which should make everything about the phone much faster...I just wish it was going to have an IR blaster.
...and of course the "no questions asked" bootloader unlock and rooting that OnePlus allows. I can't live without root...
From what I can see there is a 15 day wait time for the official Xiaomi unlock site. I don't even want to wait 15 days!! LOL

Yeah my unlock opens up Friday so I feel you. See my post I edited $613 AliExpress 256GB Transparent edition Mi 9 but please, please check the company feedback! I cancelled an order before after reading from the Mi Store empty boxes, broken phones, used phones arriving... And they were a top rated store!
IR blaster is awesome I turn on my TVs and DVRs and it supports basically anything made (even off brand) and is super convenient
I'm using this phone in Canada. no problems with reception or anything it just works great! Main reason I bought it was for the IR blaster. A month in I must say I'm loving it! Running the eu ROM on Chinese 128gb model I bought on AliExpress

Something to note fellow modder the Mi 9 running Xiaomi.eu weekly edition can use EX Manager to overclock the GPU and people are getting 400-420k AnTuTu benchmarks depending on how you set it up. Higher end scores turn off Fsync which is all fine if your system is stable - if not it can be bad - alters memory checks. I'm not sure you want a GPU running that hot all the time - RevOS has a game mode so you can turn it on just for games or whenever you want. Battery likely will drain quickly. Nonetheless that's faster than the leaked OnePlus Pro benchmarks. Revolution OS you have to add EX Kernel manager to the Game Turbo program to get it to throttle, unlock BL, TWRP, Magisk, etc. https://sourceforge.net/projects/revolutionos-miui/files/ I think straight Xiaomi.eu is cleaner 9.4.26 but haven't tried it yet. Some people say it is rock solid even at 810Mhz OC on the GPU. 2 days left to start modding...
In all honesty OnePlus devs will likely enable the same hacks so take the phone you prefer.
I'm using the Chinese variant on ATT. No issues whatsoever. I unlocked the BL and running ROS rom. Using GPay also. I bought it online from Giztop.

Have you changed any network settings at all. I have a Chinese variant and no matter what, I cannot get this to go LTE+ when my last few previous phones have. Am on tmobile but bands are supported for carrier aggregation.
Could you possibly take a screen shot of the phone information in *#*#4636#*#*. Scroll down to remove the first 3 lines in the screen shot. Just want to see the rest of the information.

Keep in mind that I live out in the suburbs of Denver and have poor reception. I normally use a Microcell tower at home. I turned it off for this screenshot.
I see one on Amazon. Doesn't really say who the seller is. But one post by a reviewer about using in U.S. said this:
I bought an International unlocked version. You can use in the USA with either T-Mobile and AT&T.
The only catch is the Huawei IMEI is not a known phone, at least by AT&T, so it only would come up as a vanilla GSM phone, maxing out at 3.5G speeds.
To get it activated at a full 4G LTE phone, you'd want to move a SIM card over from a registered AT&T 4G LTE (modern) phone, then port your number over.
But then it works perfectly well, as good as any official AT&T phone.

So, I"m not sure about the move SIM card over and port number. Seems to me if I pull the SIM from my Note 9, I'd then not need to port a number. Thoughts?
Also, I'm concerned about getting one with the green edge problem. There's no warranty in the U.S. (Seems Huawei should warranty anyway...albeit with the problem of sending it over there).
I use T-Mobile, so can't help directly. I'm pretty sure I just used the same sim card (it was back in November). The prices on Amazon are a lot better now than they were then! Great phone, lack of warranty notwithstanding.
Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it.
I guess my main stumbling block right now is concern that I'd get one with the green screen problem.
I supposed I could fall back to the Mate 20. I understand it doesn't have that problem.

the green screen problem is a bit overexxagerated imo....... it's not like u'll be looking at an empty black screen on minimal brightness all the time. i'm using the BOE screen which doesn't have this issue and i have a colleague who got the problematic LG one and frankly i don't see what the fuss is about. his screen looks better tho in normal usage scenarios
Thanks for that seat and back. Makes me feel a little better should I get one like that.
I'm not surprised to hear that, as that what happens, people like me read about it and then think it's worse than it probably is.
I did just find this video on YouTube which does show the green screen edge and gives you a good feel for what it's like. Definitely doesn't look like something a person would desire to have.
So I'm pretty set on having a device that's able to be rooted and have custom ROMs installed. I know a few of the Pixel models will work on Verizon AND are pretty easy to modify how I wish (actually have a Pixel 2 XL as my daily driver), though I've read that OnePlus devices also fall under this category. I'm also aware that I may have to call Verizon and have them enable CDMA-Less option on their end.
That being said, which of the OnePlus devices are modifiable (custom ROMs/recovery, root) and are capable of working on Verizon/have radio band 13? Can someone with a bit of experience make a list? Kudos in advance!

The 7t Pro McLaren will not work on VZW at this time. I spent 90 minutes on the phone with tech support. My line has been CDMAless since the 6t. The problem is the 7t pro McLaren is not in the VZW DB. They say they may support it in the future but they don't now. No texts or calls worked for me but data seemed to work.

You are correct and incorrect, it's not in the VZW compatible device database but tier 2 tech support can submit a form to manually add your IMEI to the database.
Source: I'm a Verizon dealer and have my OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren on Verizon as well, everything works calling, data, SMS, MMS and visual voicemail
It's a process but it's possible, you just need to make sure you get the CDMA-less and HD voice features on your line as well and you're good to go, if you plan on doing dual SIM you'll need to give them both your IMEIs

Just asking for any ideas. Bought a 7t HD 1907 which is T-Mobile but didn't know at the time because it was advertised as unlocked. Messaged big red to activate and they told me the IMEI will not work. I tried to escalate it up to a higher level but they said, well sorry. Hope you can return it. Any suggestions?

I am in a similar boat, I was told that the One Plus 7T Pro was compatible, ordered it from Gear Best, takes a couple weeks to arrive.
And over the last 3 weeks have spent over 5 hours with VZW, the first 4 calls including two to Tier 2 I was told it was compatible but not supported, but that it just needed to have the IMEI added to the Database, and each time that I would receive a call that it was done or they needed more information the following day
Well on call 5, after way too much time invested I am told that cannot be added to the DB and I should return it.
@THE_SE7EN_SINS any change you can help a fellow XDA / OnePlus lover?

Hi is anyone still active that was watching or chatting about this issue.....I too got a 7t hd1907....and was pretty dang sure it could be activated on verizon....I even apparently had a tier 3 tech at least that's what he told me... on the line tell me that it wasn't possible to use this phone it's not compatible....I asked him to fill out a dnd to put imei into the system and he informed me that was not what the dnd form was for...he said it wasn't for adding imei but fixing features on existing imei phones that were refurbished and not working correctly....kinda feel like I was just getting the run around
