Hi, I'm seriously considering buying the G5 since it has FM radio, fast charge 3.0 and of course a removable battery but my #1 concern in buying a phone is the brightness since I'm using my phone a lot outside and I wouldn't even consider to buy a phone with an average brightness like the G4 or the nexus 6p.
I have the gs5 and the problem is that in order to see something outside I have to put the brightness all the way up and that's pretty much killed my phone since I have a disgusting burn in all over the screen where the keyboard and the status bar are so Amoled is a big issue for me since it's basically always on maximum brightness which basically kills the display very fast (I could see burn in after 2 months from buying the device!).
So my question is how bright is the display on the G5? Also does the fact that it has the S820 means that there will be a lot of custom roms and development like in the Samsung Galaxy series?
Thanks
Double of LG G4
The phone hasn't been released or properly reviewed yet, but I've seen at least one early hands on mention that the screen was insanely bright. This would definitely be an improvement over their previous screens if true.
The G5 at %50 should be almost as bright as the G4 at %100, which is quite bright. I like a bright screen and keep my G4 at %80.
thanks for the answers but is there an actual test that shows how much Nits this phone gets when it's on maximum brightness? basically my fear is that i will buy this phone and it will be bad in outside usage because of the screen or that the phone will die after a year of usage.
i know that LG is a bad company and their products are trash but do you think they changed things with the G5? is it safe to buy in your opinion?

It's safe since the G2
On the German LG Site you can find these Information: 1.440 x 2.560 Pixel (Quad HD), 554 ppi, 800 Nit, Gorilla Glass 4, GPU Adreno 530
I think it's more than enough. :cyclops:
Oh wow 800 nits seems too good to be true I hope it's real
I've read it's closer to 900 nits. Either way, it should be plenty bright.
Lol I think they should also include a spare motherboard in the box just in case
I found this, which looks pretty good:
http://www.androidauthority.com/lg-g5-vs-lg-g4-674756
"Covering the proximity sensor will shut the screen off entirely, saving power when the phone is in your pocket, and nudging it will make the Always-On display slightly brighter. Speaking of brightness, on paper the LG G5 almost doubles the G4’s maximum brightness of 455 nits, pumping out 900 nits at max brightness, although in our experience they looked very similar. The LG G5 had more stable viewing angles than the G4 though. In terms of pixel density, the G5 crams 554 pixels per inch (ppi) into its slightly smaller display compared to the G4’s 534 ppi."
So it's 900 nits on paper but the same as G4 if you put them side by side? Something is wrong here
And the lowest possible brightness is? How dark can the screen go?
I very much look forward:fingers-crossed:

on my S5 the lowest brightness is very very low and that's so great when i'm using it at night but i'm not expecting it to happen on LCD since Amoled is a much more superior technology.
I wouldn't say AMOLED is more superior. It has more saturated colors, better blacks, and uses less power when dark colors are displayed.
LED/IPS tends to have more natural colors, better whites, is sharper, and best of all, no burn in.
It's subjective.
Yes but eventually all manufacturers will move to Amoled displays and will ditch LCD.
Nice!
And that saddens me. AMOLED shouldn't be as highly praised as it is when it has a major flaw, such as burn in.
I know there are many who claim they use their AMOLED screen a ton and have never had burn in but I just think they aren't looking close enough. Tons have admitted to faint burn in, at the least, within six months and that is unacceptable to me for a $600+ device.
I wish manufacturers let you choose which kind of screen you wanted, similar to a Motomaker type of thing.
well to be honest my Nexus 7 2013 had LCD and one time it freeze and became really really hot and after i restarted it the tablet had something similar to a burn in with Amoled and it was permanent, i guess LCD doesn't like heat.
my moto 360 also has LCD display and 6 months ago i hit it against the wall and since then i also have a permanent mark on my moto 360 display, i guess the LCD got damaged from the inside.
Rate this thread to express how well you can see the LG G6's display outdoors. In case you've been playing Minecraft for 18 months straight, you might not known how to get outside anymore. Well, find the door and walk through it. A higher rating indicates that it has very high maximum brightness and thus fantastic outdoor visibility in direct sunlight.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Would've loved an amoled screen.
Well that's sure to help anyone considering getting the G6.
Are you sure it's not Amoled? Did you research reviews and specs before you were forced to get your G6?
Please don't reply.
Well i have used the phone in direct sunlight and cant really say anything bad about it is readable so tha i can take calls, read texts but i wouldn't go out and start watching a video since when i say direct sunlight its like 90+°F lol but if i sit in a sunlight area with a bit of wind then yes phone is plenty bright enought for me to watch content on and enjoy it
For me it deserves 4 stars. LG G6 is more than sufficiently visible under direct sunlight.
It's pretty amazing to me that nobody other than Samsung has figured out oled for mobile screens. You know lg has been working on it for years, but for some reason they just can't mass produce it. Samsung has it mastered.
Actually LG isn't really starting to dabble in small OLED until next year.
As far as screen quality goes I saw a review stating measured 557 nits, as bright as the iPhone 7. Color accuracy was better than the iPhone and S7. Gamut was a little disappointing with 136% sRGB vs 197% for the S7. All in all a great display, probably the best LCD ever put in a phone.

im very impressed with the lg g5's display. super bright, very rich in color. and crazy sharp.
It's summer season where I'm at and yesterday I was at the beach. Visibility is low in outdoor bright light.
Probably a weird question, but how is this phone when using with polarised sunglasses?
My Z2 turns to black in some angles in portrait mode and completely black in horizontal.
Cheers
I will have pretty good comparison. HTC 10 was having highest ppi and regarded as the best lCD display. However outdoor visibility was extremely bad. I am not sure but I think it is a characteristics of LCD display . One thing I notice that even for camera HTC 10 was relying on display. Whenever I was opening camera app the screen was automatically turning 100% bright and then comeback to normal after closing the app. It happen with third party camera app as well. I will report once I get G6.

Don't use auto brightness. Auto brightness is buggy in most devices. Try to do it manually.

You can see the display in all angles. Slightly worse with rainbow-effect in some angles, but still visible.
Anyone know how it compares with the LG V20 display?

Yes it may be buggy however according to http://www.androidauthority.com/lg-g6-review-752130/
the LG G6 display actually gets brighter than 100% when it is set to AUTO.
"Putting it through our testing, we found the display to have a max manual brightness of 556 nits, which is boosted to a very respectable 663 nits when auto brightness is engaged under direct light. In sunlight, this is likely to be even higher"
I have no way to test this myself. The display is just barely usable in direct sunlight. Better than my G3 though. I wish it was better in this regard since I use this as my motorcycle GPS sometimes.

Do you use auto brightness and/or a screen protector? I guess some phones have brighter screens than others...
Reading e-books in night mode (dark brownish background and yellowish font) is the only situation where low light performance of the screen is critical to me. The QHD screen on the Note 4 performs admirably in this regard. The brightness I use is around 5%.
I'm worried the P-OLED might blur the font edges and give them a grainy look, effectively negating the benefits of a higher resolution screen over 1080p. I would not wish for any extra strain on the eyes; I tend to read every night in bed.
Any night-time e-book readers that own the V30 out there?

Asking for other e-book readers experience is smart, but be aware your "5%" on the Samsung Note 4 may be much different on other phones.
What is your "5%" in lumens? Give us a real number. Each OLED OEM sets a different minimum brightness level. Saying you like 5% on Samsung Note 4 is useless. That might be 20% or 25% brightness of the LG V30...
That's what Google did for the 2017 Pixel 2 XL -- even though they use the same LG display as the V30 Google set a much higher minimum brightness level. 5% of the Pixel 2 XL is 25%, 30% of the V30. LG lets their display get MUCH darker.
Here, go read this and look and side by side pictures.

Yes, I am aware 5 % on the Note 4 is not the same on the V30. I just mentioned it in passing, could just as well have said I keep the screen on "almost as dark as it gets".
I think a further question is, are the display issues less noticeable on dark brown/blackish background vs. the grey most comparisons use as the example?
I keep the background not-quite-black and font not-quite-white (in ither words: yellowish), because it's easier on the eyes than the contrast of simple black and white.
On Notebookcheck the review states that the pwm is bad below 80% brightness and that people who are sensitive could have trouble with this screen. Can anyone conform or deny this?

What is pwm?
I keep our three V30 at 70% all the time, because I don't like LG "auto brightness" which is too dim. 70% is plenty bright, and I read on my phone all day long, with no eye strain.

PWM is short for Pulse Width Modulation. "Pulse-Width Modulation, or PWM, is one of the ways display makers can use to adjust the display's brightness. PWM is considered to be an easy (or cost-effective) way to control the brightness, but it has serious drawbacks, such as flicker that may cause eye strain and headaches."
I am sensitive for the flickering because of a muscle disease and not sure if I can order the LG V30. On Notebookcheck it states: "The display backlight flickers at 227 Hz (Likely utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 80 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 227 Hz is relatively low, so sensitive users will likely notice flickering and experience eyestrain at the stated brightness setting and below."
But this is the only site who mention it, so I am not sure if it's correct.
You should probably avoid Oled/Amoled screens altogether if your eyes are sensitive - they all flicker at lower brightness. Personally I've had multiple devices with Oled screens and did notice eyestrain in the first times I've used them, perhaps because I never had a monotor with PWM, but it has gone completely now.
Hey, when you're reading German reviews, I think you are from a German speaking country. In Germany, the electronics markets from Saturn and Media Markt both have V30 as usable sample devices in every store I went to. Why don't you check it out
I don't notice flickering or headache when using the device at low brightness, but I'm noticing flickering on CRT Tubes. So yeah, check yourself before you buy

These screens are not perfect! If you get one that shows issues at 80%, then return it. If you get one that shows issues at 50%, return it! 20% and down doesn't seem to be too bad for some. Personally, I didn't have very good luck getting an H933 but my first H932 was good. Actually better than my H933. Try all white or all grey backgrounds to see how bad the one you get is.

A lot of LCD panels use PWM for brightness too. It only becomes a problem when the frequency is very low (to begin with). But maybe I'll go for the HTC u11 plus than. Uses PWM also but in higher frequency.

Dont Pick the HTC U11 plus! Get the V30!
I have head both (and a Pixel 2 xl) and returned all after a week:
I am not a LG Fanboy (actually I'm angry, that they didnt Roll Out the Oreo Update yet) but:
Camera, Design, Feeling, Size, Software,... everything is better in the V30!
The most negative thing on the HTC U11 plus was the absolute dark Screen brightness, even on 100%.
Also ist was very slippery and the beatiful transparent Design was only visible in a certain Viewing Angle.

Yeah, I'm aware, but I haven't heared of people complaining about that on phones. Must be at a high frequency or not used too often at all. I know a lot of monitors used to have PWN with a low frequency but I've used PWM-free ones just to avoid possible eye strain and probably that's why I did experience it for a bit after first using OLED screens.

Well, he's specifically worried about getting the V30 due to the screen...
And I disagree, I've had the U11 (not plus) for a half a year and I prefer my V30 but the U11 definitely had a better camera (much better in low-light) and imo software. It was also faster and had less stutters and framedrops. It was an amazing phone really, so can't go wrong if you're afraid that OLED will give you eye strain.
In reality V30 must have PWM @ 227Hz.
But in reality observers who tested V30 said that their eyes aren't strained from V30 display while they do strain from 1+5T for example
So, best bet for you should be to buy it with moneyback, test for yourself and get money back if your eyes would suffer
With PWM not only frequency does matter but also % of duty cycle

That's interesting because I watch a local reviewer and he says that his eyes are sensitive so he always mentions eye strain when reviewing phones. He said that the 1+5t screen was great overall but gave him eye strain, while the V30's screen didn't.
I never gave it much thought but I guess it matches your findnings.

The U11 plus uses high frequency. There people can get eye restrain below 30% health. The htc 11 doesn;t work with PWM (and has a nicer screeen than the plus).

Heard today that the lg g7 gets a M LCD display. Maybe wait for may to see what the new device will bring.
@Billy Madison, I can't watch the video (removed?).
Here it's a bit difficult to buy with moneyback.
I also suffer from headaches from PWM in displays (as well as other screen factors), and seem to be sensitive to certain phones so am also fussy.
From my v30+ testing I have found PWM that I notice, to occur at 41% and lower, so for me this makes the phone usable as I generally set it around 50-100% (or set it at 65% in the morning with auto on).
I have not tried a photodiode/oscilloscope on the display (yet), just pencil swinging, fan, and high speed shutter on camera to verify when the change occurs.

seems like even though frequency is low but the ampiltude is relatively little also, maybe that is the case
Hi XDA,
ASUS announced the ROG Phone 3 earlier today. I reviewed the phone for the XDA Portal after having used it for nearly a month (I received it on June 26th and published my review on July 22nd.) The phone has a metric ton of features, so if you have any specific questions about the ROG Phone 3, feel free to ask me a question. I'll enable notifications for new replies in this thread so I'll answer them as they come in.
I recommend reading the following posts first to see if they answer any of your questions:
Our launch coverage: ASUS launches the ROG Phone 3 with the Snapdragon 865 Plus, 144Hz display, and 6000mAh battery

I have also answered a few questions about the phone already on Reddit.
Hi and thanks for the review.
So I have had Rog 2 since the launch and although it's great overall, it has some big issues on display side and I want to know if rog 3 also suffers from the same issues.
1.the first issue that almost everyone knows about is the gray color turning to reddish color on lower brightness levels especially on 120hz. You'll have to test this with gray color background in a dark room but I can notice it even in a normal lit room.
2. the screen is kind of grainy and has a lot of bandings. you can also test this by downloading a 5% gray picture and turn the brightness all the way down in a completely dark room and look for oled bandings and lines and grainyness!
3. Huge Black crush! If you search google for "black crush test" the first result is a reddit question that leads to a video of a test picture. On rog 2 only and only on 100% brightness all the squares up to 5 are visible but as we turn down the brightness almost all squares become black (although they actually should be gray) and we can only see the first three squares at the bottom.(255% 100% and 50%)
and that means if we want to see everything in true color and we are supposed to see, we have to use 100% brightness all the time which not only hurts the eyes, but also brings screen burn-ins in as soon as 3 2 months.

I am also interested in knowing abot this , and also if there is image retention at High brightness, can be checked by staying at a static page for 1mint or more the quick switching to to a gray image , like the chrome in dark mode with all tabs closed , I take I screenshot of it an zoom it and out it into full screen that time I can see the ghost image of previously shown page
I'm really interested in the acoustics/ speaker volume - how does this aspect compare to other current flagships & also specifically to ROG 2??

1. I do not see any reddish tint on gray colors in low brightness levels in low ambient lighting. I tested at 144Hz, 1-20% brightness, dark room, and with the Reddit is Fun app set to a dark gray background.
2. I looked up a 5% grain photo and found a video on YT. At the minimum brightness wherein the picture becomes visible to my eye in a dark room, there's uneven graininess. Raising the brightness a bit and I can see horizontal banding. No issues at higher brightnesses, though.
3. Similar result on the ROG Phone 3, sadly.

No, the ROG Phone 3 does not support motion estimation/motion compensation, or MEMC, as it's called on the OnePlus 8 Pro or OPPO Find X2 Pro. The OnePlus 8 Pro and OPPO Find X2 Pro can do hardware-accelerated MEMC thanks to a dedicated display processor called the Iris 5, designed by a company called Pixelworks. More details on that here: https://www.xda-developers.com/pixe...ssor-android-display-experience-oppo-find-x2/

It's actually not quite as loud as the ROG Phone II. Still gets very loud in comparison to most devices, though. I've mentioned all the audio features that ASUS and Dirac added to the ROG Phone 3 in my review. You can thankfully tweak the speaker quality a bit with the 7-band equalizer and Bass/Treble slider in AudioWizard.
So based on your information, Im deciding to keep my rog2 for another year and see what 2021 brings us.
Hopefully an LCD gaming device or a high quality oled one.
Thank you for your answer
Can you please show the air triggers and how you can use them if you have that on hand?
So little people touch on this feature or expand on how it's used and I'm very curious as the rog 2 I have has had beta gestures forever.

I posted extensively about the AirTriggers in my review. What more do you want to know?
1)is there FM radio
2) Is 3rd party application shown on always on display
Can the AirTrigger functions be mapped for usage in other non-game Apps/ functions (including torch/ camera/ audio player etc)?
If not possible in stock, will custom ROMs (if they happen for ROG 3) be able to re-map AirTrigger functions?

Yes, you can set AirTriggers to work in non-gaming apps. I just mapped the left/right shoulder buttons to previous/next in Google Play Music. One problem: the stock camera app can't be added to ArmouryCrate. Further, when I added GCam, the camera viewfinder was totally black when I launched it. I suspect that the camera is being blocked by the overlay in some way.
The sound system benefits (volume/ bass/ enhancements etc) are only during gaming, or throughout general usage of phone (calls/ music/ videos)?
Thanks for the awesome review

Already answered in post #6 towards the end.....
I have been a loyal Pixel customer until now. I love my Pixel 4 XL, which is working very well. However, I am blown away by the ROG 3 specs. I am especially attracted to the display and the audio in addition to the fast performance. I have three questions for you i
1) What was your experience like with the display. Will it blow the Pixel 4 XL out of the water?
2) What was your experience with the performance like in comparison to other phones?
3) Is Asus good about updates ( yearly system updates as well as security updates on a monthly basis)?
Thank you in advance for taking the time to answer my questions.

Hello, I don't play games on mobile at all yet I'm considering buying this phone simply because of the huge battery and speaker setup as those are the most important for me.
Do you think I should go for it?

I got the ROG Phone 2 for that same reason, and I can tell you that you won't be disappointed. You can go for the ROG Phone 3 for with the same results. Only difference there is that there is no built in headphone jack. I came from the OP7 Pro, so the only thing you'll miss is the higher quality display.
