My manta refuses to die.
It falls over every now and again and it does cash freeze occasionally. (I then just grab the latest stable stripped down ROM and carry on)
Its my bedroom streamer and it serves that purpose brilliantly.
How many active Manta are left in the wild?
Mines still ticking along ok. I'm running pure nexus 7.1 with a replaced the battery. It's a little slow sometimes opening apps but does everything I need it to. If the old boy holds out I'll keep using it for at least the next two or three years.
I still have mine, but I barely use it. I've been thinking of putting ubuntu on it so I can get some usage out of it.
I have mine still running. Battery lasts for minutes if not plugged in so it's a pretty stationary device for watching videos. 70% Netflix, 25% youtube and maybe 5% light web browsing. Happy it's still ticking along but don't use it for intense tasks anymore.
I just got mine yesterday! Mint condition: no yellowing, no dead pixels, no scratches (well, a minor one on the back), charges via USB no problem. It has Android 5.1.1. Should I use a custom ROM?
Wow your a late to the party! 5.1.1? It's been that long since I used 5.1.1 that I have forgotten what it runs like but I would definitely try a ROM, what have you got to lose as you can always flash back to lollipop.
Oh and getting back to the theme of the thread yes I still use my N10 but I wish I had bought a pogo charger back in 2013. The charge times for the device is painful.
Still up and running on the unofficial Lineage 14.1. Mostly I use it for reading pdf roleplaying game rulebooks. Although a paper book is actually better and faster...
I still use mine. It has no indication of wear and tear. Just the normal feeling of getting old. I'm about to replace it with a Lenovo Tab 4 10. I love the N10 but I'm ready to have a smoother tablet experience
I figured I'd chime in. I play Summoners War on mine but it doesn't last an hour. I keep meaning to get a new battery hoping it'll help. Also the MicroUSB port doesn't do data anymore but still charges. I blame that on the magnetic charger I've had installed on it for a long time now. It sucks though because I'm deathly afraid of soft bricking it at this point with no point of return haha...
Mine is still going pretty strong, running 7.1.1. I'm mostly using it for reading O'Reilly Safari Books online, recipes while cooking, and the like. Media streaming is mostly relegated to the Chromecasts now.
I've said before and I still believe it: I think the Nexus 10 is one of the best pieces of technology I've ever bought.

Are you sure the problem is the MicroUSB port? When I received my used Nexus 10, USB worked to connect it with my PC, but within a day the PC stopped acknowledging the existence of the Nexus 10. So, I researched on the Internet and found that this happens if you disconnect the Nexus 10 without doing Windows' "Safely Removing Hardware and Eject Media". One guy RMA'ed his and got a replacement, and it worked briefly until the same thing happened, LOL. The solution is to remove the drivers from Windows and let them reinstall. Or try on another PC. Since I wasn't sure exactly which drivers to remove and my other PC has wonky USB ports, I haven't fixed the problem yet. Instead, I am using Wi-Fi and Windows Sharing to share a directory from my PC to the Nexus 10.
I'm on lineageos 13, nexus 10 cpu is really slow compared to new cpus, but display is still superb, I'm still searching for new roms for nexus 10, android 9 would be amazing. But I'm not using tablet as extensively as few years before, I have some plans to sell my nexus 10.

That's very interesting. I'll have to try that one of these days!
Mine is good almost as new and I'm still using it. I'm running Pie on it and is doing as well as the ROM allows it as it has several issues still. But the tablet keeps amazing and I would love if someone could port the Google Home Hub rom into it if this is kind of possible.
There are some roms of android 9. Its called LineageOs.
Mine nexus 10 runs still pretty well, even the battery. I put PhoenixOS on it soe i can have a Desktop environment.
Literally just picked on up on EBay to use with a bluetooth keyboard for a mobile workstation when I don't feel like bringing one of my laptops. Now to root and ROM...
Still using mine.. still works perfect.. although slow with pie but i can't complain it has to be what 6-7 years old now?
Just joining everyone
I've wanted one of these since they came out and just picked up a "Manufacturer Refurbished" one from eBay, about to put LineageOS on it (Unless someone has a better OS suggestion), wish me luck!
Still running, it is a dedicated YouTube machine on my workbench, and stays plugged in, but still going strong.
Me too! me too!!
My Manta is like new! I've only done very little mileage to it and it's like new. I'm running 7.1.1 but I hate the camera not working so I'll just go back to stock I guess..

Hello, guys.
I was swiping around with my phone today when I found out that to move an icon out of the dock became annoying. I thought it was just the phone got slow for so many apps running but even after a reboot it did the same.
It turns that if the phone is plugged in a PC (I've tried with two different PC's and two different O.S., Crunchbang and Windows 7) that part of the screen, about 3 squared centimeters, stops responding as it should. It doesn't hold a drag and drop swipe, for example. If you pull out the device from the PC, voilĂ , perfect. I tried with different official ROMs, installed wiping everything, even internal storage and always get the same problem.
I am using Android ICS (compilation 453 UK) and would appreciate your opinions, mainly to know if I am the only one with this issue, if this can be fixed or my phone will go right away to Sony in order to be fixed.
Thanks in advance!
P.S.: I'm rendering a video to show you clearly the issue...
Since you have tried anything on your hand to make it work, this might even be a dumb suggestion, but have you tried to plug the phone using another USB cable? Maybe it's the cable causing some sort of interference or something.
Thanks for your suggestion but I tried with two different cables. The original that comes with the phone and an HTC from my previous Nexus One.
This is really a weird and impossible to understand for me issue. I mean, I could understand if the phone gets a bit slower being connected to the PC due to the I/O operations of the Internal Storage or even more if it is connected in Debug mode but the fact just a 3 CM2 portion of the screen becomes iresponsive is getting me crazy.
Sony Tech Support just recommends me to send the phone back to them.
Turn it off for a while 3 hours let it chil.
Could do something.
Sent from a Galaxy far far away.
I just did what you said, left the phone switched off all night long and this morning switched on with the same results.
Anyway, thanks for your suggestion, it was really something I didn't think of before.

I am about to buy this tablet...
But now I see a lot of threats here with many issues...
So now I am a little worried about this tablet instead of excited...
Question:
Is this tablet any good at all, or is it just bad quality all together ?
Would you rather have bought a different tablet, knowing what you know now ?

Having only had it mine for a week, I've had 0 issues. Build quality seems exceptional on my 32gb WiFi model.
I personnaly tried many tablet, it's just a confort for design and power, it's just the best for me, i was htc addict and now i love Sony
I found the build quality to be very shoddy on the one I got, and I did end up returning it. The backing was coming unstuck, the screen flexed, there was a shadow along the bottom edge of the screen, a dead pixel, erratically sensitive screen, the breaking of Firefox Sync by the OS and these diagonal lines on the screen that really annoyed me.
However, I don't regret being able to try it, and Sony Canada made it very easy for me to return. If I had gotten a non-defective one, I would have been reasonably happy and waited for the Firefox Sync issue to be fixed.
If your excitement still outweighs your misgivings, just make sure wherever you buy it from has a good return policy and, better still, lets you open it up in-store and make sure the more common hardware issues (unsticking back, flexing screen, non-flush port covers) are absent.
Good luck.
i'm a little biased because i got mine with my sony card rewards points (and the 32gb model for 480 dollars worth of rewards points at that), but i'm definitely disappointed in this wifi vs bluetooth issue. no one seems to be able to figure it out and there are tons of people with the issue. basically once a device is connected via bluetooth, the wifi dies. it shows its still connected with a strong signal, but nothing will load. if i had paid cash and didn't have a sony card, i'd probably have returned it by now... which sucks because otherwise i really love the thing.
Very pleased with my model. SGP311.
No build issues, WIFI issues or anywhere else for that matter. Have used several tablets and this is the only one I've stuck with.
One very happy customer - highly recommended.
Has there ever been a device released without issues? Just protect yourself by always buying from a place with a convenient return policy, especially if you're spending this much money. Or buy at a place with the longest return policy (generally 14 days I think), and see how you like it for yourself.

This is the best tablet I have ever had. No regrets. Even though I have had a few wifi issues where it disconnects, it reconnects quickly. Plus it only happens when I am fairly far away from the router.
I ordered mine directly from Sony (a US 312). I've noticed no build issues (much nicer than my Nexus 10 actually) or wifi problems. Rooting was easy, and after freezing the stuff I don't use, I'm getting a solid 10 to 12 hours or use out of it between charges. I'm using the charging doc (to avoid the micro USB port) as well as the Sony case (which is overpriced but still very nice). Best tablet I've used.
Regards,
John Francis
Apart from battery taking really too long to fully recharge (6 hours) I can't complain about this tablet. Everything works as it should. I totally recommend it!
The only problem i am having is my computer will not recognized the tablet what so everrrr
Hi people,
I hope the OP don't mind me jumping aboard his thread with questions on my own.
I'm in the market for a tablet too (my first one) I recently bought a Galaxy Note 10.1 for my wife and I'm thinking about this one for myself.
My only concern is the WiFi issue since I'll buy it in the US but then I'll take it out of the Country so return it would not be possible.
How common is this issue?
I read some people saying it's not the tablet, but the router and setting should be changed while others say that Sony CS told them to return the tablet for an exchange (admiting then that the problem is in their product).
Changing settings on my own router would be possible (if that in fact solves the problem) but what about if you are using other sources like WiFi in public places?
Since I'll be using WiFi more than anything, should I buy this with confidence or should I go for other options? After all I think the major point that draws me to this tablet is the video quality (is it that noticeable compared with other tablets?)
Thanks for any input,
I dont know how some people got thier xtz with problems when i got mine with zero issues..

Anyway, im not forcing you to get one just saying.. Its up to you..
Are you guys buying it from sony site? I got mine from amazon cause sony doesnt have a 1day delivery offer for me..
Amazon is "not that bad" no issues on the box or anything that will make me disappointed.. The only thing that i dont like is that they use a 1A7 type box which is kind of big for the tablets box and instead of bubble wrap its just some kind of paper like thing.. So if you shake the amazon box you can hear thr package inside.. But if we're talking about the tablets packaging, its fine

I don't have the charging issue with mine, or at the very least it isn't as pronounced. I did recently run into this issue with my Note 2 and it was because of the ROM and kernel combo I was running, it wasn't allowing the phone to charge as fast as it would on stock. That may have been the users problem, it may just be he has a crappy battery in his that needs to be replaced. I haven't noticed any big issues with mine, I have had it for a little over a month and a half, except for the screen pressure click that happens when you hold it awkwardly and it causes the screen to flex and your screen will click even though you didn't touch it because its reading the presses coming through from the back. That's because its so thin though.

So I feel like I need a new toy...I've been tossing up whether to upgrade my phone or maybe get this tablet. Previously I've had all the Samsung phones...S1, S2, Note1 & 2 an now S3. On th3 tablet front though I've only had the TF101 with dock...it was OK but now mainly serves as a transfer device between phone and HDD since I dont have an actual PC. The performance issues were probably the most troubling issue I had with it. More Ram faster processor. ..good for its first gen experi3nce but thats it.
So my question really is do you recommend this tablet since time with your purchase? If not why not? I can deal with pesky lil annoyances but as a whole has your experience been enjoyable and not regretful? My purchase is literally a walk across the road...
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
you have to think hard about this actually cause the tablet z is completely different than the tf101 with the dock
you'll need a bluetooth keyboard to retain the physical keyboard if that was something major to you
other than that i love the tablet so far only headache for me is the wireless issue but hopefully when i get back to school it'll work flawlessly with my router at school
I went from a TF101 with a dock myself to an SGP321 and I've got to tell you the performance and screen more than makes up for the lack of a physical keyboard and thus also a shorter battery life.
Remember how you get 16 hours of use at best out of the TF101 with the docking station? My SGP321 does around 8-9 with everything turned on and no power save except for brightness on auto (way too bright for night use otherwise). If I leave it on standby like this it will last for days.
In short, I'm not regretting the SGP321 at all (and LTE is a nice bonus even though my current provider only offers HSPA+).
I'm coming off a tf201 with dock and while there are some things I could miss with that combo the reality was I never really used it the way I thought. I back up all my files to a portable USB drive and the intent was to access that whenever I needed to, the reality is I also back them up to my server and it was almost always easier to log on and download from there. As for performance, there is no comparison, the Sony beats it hands down. I upgraded the Primes ROM to the latest Wookie rev which extended the life but there were so many other issues like lack of GPS, wifi connectivity etc, I've never experienced any wifi issues with the Sony, it is 5G capable and locks on to the AP without hesitation. The HDMI resolution is not as good as the Prime and it is noticeable, the Prime was HD, this is not but I can live with it.
Some of the pita issues are the port covers, I guess but it's still a pain except for the micro sd, it's good to have that covered as I lost a 32gb card out of the Prime. I also like the ability to lock the screen by closing the case like the ipads do, not possible on the Prime so that's a nice addition. The battery is not a big and takes longer to charge but at least you can do that via the usb port with just about any charger, the prime was cable and charger specific. The other pain was getting root and mostly that was my problem, I couldn't get past the ADB server out of date issue and finally diagnosed that to the Samsung adb drivers, I'd always unplug the phone when working on the Z so never saw them listed, only by mistake leaving both in did see it an once updated problem solved so now I have root and can restore via titanium.
I also have accumulated lots of Samsung products and have a SG3 which is the best phone I've ever used so was looking forward to their next generation slates, wow did they miss the mark. Here Sony is trying to give you good value and I think they succeed, it's fast and now fun to use again, highly recommended.
I bought two Nexus 10 when they were first released and I've scrapped one because the battery failed and a huge screen area went yellow and I was getting multiple annoying random reboots every day.
Now my second Nexus 10 is going the same way.
What a load of crap this tablet is, I'm not surprised Google is not updating it for no-one would buy it.
That's interesting....I have a few mates who have the Nexus 10 and none of them have had those problems. They have had theirs since they were released...Maybe you dropped them once?
You just might be an isolated incident. Another mate if mine has the N7 but the only issue is the charger port issue that many other people have.
I have a N4 and the only issue I have is that the camera stops working at times and to fix that I just restart the phone.

No misuse at all and another annoying bug is the way it deletes part of the pin number after a reboot so you have to re-do the pin number.

I am sorry to hear you are having troubles with both N10s. I would surely have the same frustrations were I you.
We have two N10s, his and hers, for about a year and half. They are used for several hours every day, because we are retired and have lots of time to be online or reading books. My wife's N10 runs Purity ROM and is rock solid for her word games and eBay, facebook, shopping, email and all the other stuff. Mine is rock solid for banking, bill pay, surfing and videos. It usually runs CM11, but could be temporarily running something else while playing around with ROMs. We charge our tablets every day, and try never to get below 50% before plugging in.
I do plan to buy at least one N9 when released, not out of need, but, instead, out of curiosity for an Android 3x4 screen format. Fun times ahead for us Nexus fans.

Don't forget nexus 10 is a two years old tablet but it was a gem in its own time. After 2 years we still don't have any tablets with a higher screen resolution than nexus 10. Which makes it perfect for media consumption. I think only galaxy tab s has a better screen nowadays.
It has had its own shortcommings but most of them are by rectified by software updates, like memory leaks or random reboots.
I have purity ROM on my nexus 10 and I have zero reboots or problems. Everything works like a charm after 2 years of heavy usage. The only thing that I envy now is a super amoled screen on my tablet.

I agree, the Nexus Tablet line was literally one of the biggest POS. I owned a Nexus 7 tablet for about six months and never dropped it or anything. The problem started out with ghosting/ghost input touches then later on progressed to half the touch screen not working at all... Although I initially loved it literally became one the biggest let downs ever...
On top of this, I had also read many articles on XDA and elsewhere of people with the same problem trying to send their tablet's in to ASUS for the warranty and they basically just sent the tablets back to them as is with a software upgrade, which didn't help at all since it was a hardware problem.

Mine had worked flawlessly since the week it was released.
I got mine when they released the tablet and I've never had one problem with it.
I got mine first month of release and it was great for about a year. It's still good now but my siblings abused it so now the battery drains quick (used to last all day and some of the next now I'm lucky if it reaches the end of the day) and speakers are chipping paint.
Other than that there no issues though and those are pretty much our fault. The battery problem could be from not using official charger or just charging all night

I bought my shortly after release and have not experienced any problems with it. I have almost exclusively been using the Franco kernel with AOKP. I use it every day in place of my laptop. I can watch movies, youtube, internet, social media, etc. all day on a single charge.
I bought mine around feb/mar 2013.
It's a piece of crap.
Yellow/brownish tint on the screen that is getting bigger as we speak, battery shutdown at 30% (workarounds exist!), overheating, slow response, slow R/W speeds, etc. I have to do a factory reset pretty much every month.
On top of that: Gergle being a b*tch about it because they've deactivated my account (inactivity). Really funny guys.
I don't know what to do.
I guess I'll throw it away, as soon as I have something new. I'll never buy anything touched by Samsung again. No phone, tablet, TV, you name it. The only thing they're good as is NAND.

The problem is: I force the system NOT to shutdown. The battery stays at 0%, but the device keeps running.
This is dangerous. When the CPU ramps up and the voltage is too low it'll cause instability, which you can see by the backlight flickering, the speakers making weird noises, all that bad stuff.
I am not sure how this affects the battery (or the device) physically, since Li-Ion is not very happy when it's "too" discharged. But it'll wear out the battery even faster, I fear. (This is unfunded. I have not enough knowledge about electronics that advanced. But I've read it somewhere. :silly
But, that out of the way: There's an xposed module. I DO NOT recommend using it. It's called DisableCriticalBatteryShutdown, by the user zst123.
You WILL run into fc's of the systemui when plugging the device back in. But the process should restart by itself.
There's a thread on XDA. AGAIN, I DO NOT RECOMMEND USING THIS MODULE.
I got my Nexus 10 shortly after they were released, and though I love it because it's screen is gorgeous and it has front-facing speakers, it is really buggy, and has been since day one.
It freezes and restarts on me probably daily, and always has since it was brand new. In the early days it always happened while using Chrome, and at the time I remember reading that it was a Chrome-specific issue, so I just switched to Firefox in hopes of a better experience.
It was better, for the most part, but eventually it started freezing at other times as well. I still like the tablet, but it definitely has never been a great performer.
I got my Nexus 10 at release, after 1.5 months of Google not shipping it, losing it, telling me that it was coming, etc... Worst customer experience I ever had. I was on the phone with them daily.
When I finally got it it worked fine for a little while but as I put more and more on it and actually tried to use it to stream video, I would get random reboots, freezing, etc...
I've tried relentlessly to talk my wife into letting me unlock it and put a custom ROM on it hoping it would fix things but she would never let me. Now that it's almost two years old, and I barely use it do to all the reboots, etc..., she might finally let me unlock it.
I was really looking forward to getting this tablet when they announced it but with all the problems, for me it pretty much became a $500 paperweight. I use my GS4 so much more than I every used this tablet, even when I'm home.

I have 2 Nex10's. Both bought at launch. One is stable as a rock (thank god it's the wife's or else) but mine is a bit of a dud. Instabilities and crashes since day one.
Not a day goes by that I don't have to do the 3 finger salute to restart because it has frozen solid.
Tried factory resetting, flashed factory images whenever a new one was around and tried different kernels. No change whatsoever.
I believe Samsung's soc is the culprit here, which was also the issue with the chrome chrashes in the early days (GPU drivers that fixed the issue where delayed by Samsung, which was silly as it's a stock Mali GPU).
Never mind the USB connectivity issues that only Samsung devices do. I had no problem connecting any of my other tablets and phones (Nexus 7, 4, 5, Xperia Z, various HTCs, even Nokia Lumias) to my PC. The Nex10? No dice. I had to manually remove any and all USB drivers, do 3 rain dances and pray to the lord of shadows before I got it to work.
Hello everyone, I bought my Nexus 9 two years ago and it has been a complete disaster for me since the beggining.
During the summer, the tablet desided to go crazy when the battery dropped below 30-40%.
The screen would turn white and the tablet produced a REALLY loud noise.
Since there is no dedicated HTC service center in my country, the tablet was sent to Romania 3 times, in order to be fixed.
The first time they only flashed again the stock firmware, the second time the service center "cleaned the screen from dust" and the third time (it had already been a month), they finally decided to fix it by replacing the screen and the charging circuits.
The table was ok since that, but last week randomly it decided to lag when battery was under 30-40%, the cpu got stock at 653mhz and it stopped charging.
Since i was on lineage Os, i thought it might be a rom or kernel issue, and i reverted back to stock.
However, the stock rom only solved the charging issues, as I was able to fully charge the tablet.
But now, when the battery drops below 50% the tablet dies on its own.
The only way to turn it back on, is to open the back cover, unplug the battery and then replug it.
Do you have any ideas as what might that be?
Is this because the battery has died, or maybe because of some other hardware problem?
I really wish i can solve this on my own, because now my tablet is out of warranty and the repair center has been proved not to be trustworthy
Thank you

Your original issue is kinda common on n9. It could have been solved by unplugging the battery (maybe cleaning connection) and re-plugging. The new issue I haven't seen before. Maybe try wiping the battery stats.
I can confirm that re-plugging battery helped in my N9
I just got this Nexus 9 a couple weeks ago from a family member who got a new tablet due to the Nexus 9 doing a similar thing as the OP has described. The battery would get like 50%-20% and screen would go crazy and a loud screeching noise would take place until you hard reset with the power button. Worked great long as i kept it plugged in on the charger.
So i fixed the problem on mine by doing what others recommended. I took the back off the tablet and disconnected the battery. cleaned up the contacts and let it sit unplugged for a few mins and put it all back together. I then dumped the stock OS for lineage and elemental kernel which also disables the encryption allowing the tablet to run significantly faster than the stock setup. I also disabled the animations in the developers options as i'm a power user through and through over eye candy.
Since doing all that, i'm on week two of heavy usage and the tablet runs like new and is snappy as hell. Goes through the whole cycle of the battery now without the screen going nuts and the screeching noise when the battery gets low 50% - 20%. Not sure how long it will last but so far so good and i scored a decent tablet for free. Only thing holding this tablet up is the the lousy 2gb ram but it's still a very respectable piece of hardware to be 2014 tech.
If it acts up again i may invest in a new battery for it to see if it fixes the issue as i don't have any money invested in the tablet anyway. So it would at least be worth a new battery but so far i've had no problems with it after doing the above fixes recommended by others and the battery in it still gets roughly between 6-7 hrs between charges so not bad for a battery that old.
Just finished up my holiday shopping with the Nexus 9 and not a problem out of it so far. If this Nexus 9 stays working good then it will be replacing my Nexus 7 2012 32gb Grouper as my daily driver. The old Nexus 7 has been solid for me since i got it in 2012 but it's really time to let it go as it's really showing it's age now but still works good as a reader and browsing the web isn't too god aweful. Hope the OP figures out a solution as the Nexus 9 is still a very capable tablet. Hope my experience shared helps with your issue.

I just picked up a spare Nexus 9 because I want to try an Android build that has encryption turned off (I have a Nexus 9 running 7.1.x). So I'm very interested in your build, it's overall compatibility, and how you went about selecting and installing what you did.
But on to your screen/screeching problem! I solved mine by removing the back cover, disconnecting the battery, cleaning the connections, and putting it all back together. It's been running problem-free for months now! Here is my original post and replies on that exact issue: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-9/help/strange-crash-specific-app-t3604379
I'm not that good at assembly/disassembly, but this was very easy! Good luck!

Nice! I have a 2nd N9 as well, a white one (my first was black) and it has that same issue. I cleaned the battery connection. Fixed it for a few months, then came back. Now at all different battery levels (all below 40%). Iay try cleaning it again.
My first one is on it's 2nd USB daughterboard. And needs another one now. Mostly my fault this time. Watching movies in my work truck (really safe, I know) with an OTG stick plugged in and it fell out of it's stand and smacked right on the otg stick. Now charging and OTG file transfers are hit and miss (mostly miss).
I'm going to fix it again. The USB daughterboard is only around $10 - $15 US. Takes about 15 minutes to fix.
Seems the different colors (white, black, sand color) each are prone to each of the common hardware issues. Black one never had battery issue, but it's getting bubbles in screen at the corners.
Both have the faded, white - ish spots on the screen at the left side (in landscape). Around where the nav bar is in portrait. May have something to do with it.
Ok I've rambled on enough, LoL.
Enjoy your weekend, all you Nexus 9 owners out there.
Sure, we were all a little disappointed at the build quality. Especially for the launch price. And ESPECIALLY if you had the added excitement of upgrading from a Nexus 7 (2013), like I did (and many others). But we still hang on to the 9 because it's tough to replace. Size, flashability, nostalgia, and a bunch of leftover "but this thing was supposed to a super Nexus* that doesn't go away.
Ok done rambling for real this time! ?
