Emui 9/Android P bug - okay Google - Huawei Mate 20 Pro Questions & Answers

Hi everybody,
So yesterday I updated to emui and Android 9. Today I had to discover that the "okay Google" feature doesn't work anymore. If I open the search manually or drag up from bottom screen corners it listens but I can't fire it up with saying "okay Google".
I checked the options in the phone and the ones in the Google app an both were deactivated but not grayed out. The problem is when I try to turn them on they get turned off automatically in less than a second.
I think it has something to do with huaweis assistant wich I don't want to use. Is speech activation now blocked or is it a bug?
BTW I actually own a mate 10 pro but I posted here because I don't know if the problem comes from Android or emui and because the 20 came to my knowledge shipped with the update but the 10 did not.
Please excuse my English I'm not a native speaker and thanks to everybody

I set mine up did the ok Google, hey Google steps. But when I tried to use it, it wasn't detecting my voice. After a bit of fiddling around I managed to get it working. Below is what I did.
Cleared cache and storage
Disabled App
Enabled App
Downloaded update from playstore
Reboot
Setup voice detect
Retrained voice.
Tested it worked several times
Rebooted
Test again still works

Genuine question, why do you all use this feature? What uses does it have? I just pick up my phone to do what I need to do. I'm just curious, might even give me a reason to use it lol
Sent from my [device_name] using XDA-Developers Legacy app

It's a known problem since 6 months by Google on many many many devices

I just started a thread on this... It seems to me like the new Pie permissions are an issue and one of the coders didn't get the memo that now you need to make Google app or Assistant a Trusted Agent to unlock your phone. Been trying things for days to get this working.... Such a piss off. Especially when I'm driving and I need to say Ok Google, take me to the closest Home Depot. Gfs frustrating
Edit: if I get a ticket for holding my phone... I'm gonna blame it on Google

[Q] Google Talk App Dead?

Can anyone else confirm that the G-Talk app no longer works/signs in? Whenever I try signing in, all of my contacts and my own contact are permanently grayed out, despite having internet connectivity (tested both over wifi and cellular). When I tried installing Hangouts, this issue was no longer present, Really sucks because Hangouts is a major step backward from Google Talk for obvious reasons (no status messages, shows people who are away/busy as offline, bloated layout, bloated contacts list, doesn't show online status of people you are chatting with in same window, generally confusing UI, etc.)
Tried on Samsung SM-N900T (T-Mobile Note 3) but I do not believe this issue is device specific.
Thanks.
This is currently happening to me, although it works on a new install of my current ROM. This makes me wonder if a Play Services update (or similar service) killed it intentionally. I'm going to let everything update after a new install, while it's working, and see if it dies.
I'm seeing the same thing. It works if I update to hangouts.... ugh
So now I guess our next step is to figure out what service is killing Talk and revert that as well. Because as I said this works on a new install of my ROM that was built before whatever was pushed.
I don't have a problem with you updating an app - but if you're going to force me to use the updated version, don't strip it of the features that made it great! Looks like Google has officially gone astray from their old slogan of "Don't be evil."

What phone/version are you using?
---------- Post added at 03:22 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:02 AM ----------
I found the culprit. It's Google Play services, which was updated Nov 5.
Uninstalling the update gives me gtalk connection back, but maps doesn't like it.
Looks like we need to find the apk before the update and prevent it from autoupdating
I can confirm that uninstalling the Google Play Services updates allows Talk to work fine again (Nexus 4). Also that some functions like "improved location" in Maps are asking for this update back.
What I don't really get is that I never enable auto-updates, only pick them manually, and that Talk suddenly stopped working last night. Even though the last Google play services update i did was at least a few weeks ago...sleeper feature? Or is Google Play Services updated anyway in the background? I'm not sure that finding the version prior to the one published on Nov 6th will fix the issue, at least without any drawback...
Google and its f*cked up Hangouts are really pissing me off. Forced updates, forced apps, I'm starting to feel like I'm dealing with Apple here.

Agreed. I don't mind even mind the update though. The reason there is forcing involved is because Google removed Talk's most important features and expects us to just deal with it. If things keep going this way, my next phone may very well be an iPhone or a Windows phone. I can't support a company that forces its customers to use featureless junk. Google needs to realize that while it still has the largest chunk of the market, there are two other major players, and they are not invincible by any means.
I'm using imo.im, at least for the time being.
Same here, I´ve noticed that Google Play Services update is the bad guy. The Hangouts (crap) works after the update. I removed the Google play services updates and gtalk worked again bit now the triangle with the exclamation about google play services keeps anoying me.
I´ve noticed on GPS (google play services) update, theere are two new permission requests and one of them is turn on/off network...
I´m sticking with gtalk and the triangle error
Sorry for my english, is not my native language.
Update: After disabling google+ notifications, the triangle on status bar has gone
Ugh. Kit Kat came with this all pre-loaded. I did install the Talk APK but yeah, it can't login. Not sure what I can force-downgrade to get it to work without breaking stuff too badly. Anyone have any ideas?
I really, really can't stand Hangouts. It's not an IM program.
On my Nexus 4, reverting Google play services allows me to use Talk again, but I noticed I am now unable to send mails with the Gmail app. I can receive just fine, but no way to send...anyone having this too (with the factory version of gplay services)?
Also the network icon constantly gets grayed out. It seems to be working fine... Strange though.
I update the gplay services again, no Gmail is too much to ask for me.
I'll use another messenger while waiting for a new gplay services update to come out. Or maybe waiting to get an previous apk that keeps the overall functions working just fine.
I remember when I would proudly feel satisfied with having chosen Google and Android over the rest. Hm not so much today. Wouldn't really quit android, but damn I hate seeing it weakened by those socially-networked-marketing-alterations.
If anyone has a decent backup for gplay services that allows talk AND the rest to work fine, I'll be interested! Gotta say I have the previous version (the one right before the Nov 5th update) in a nandroid bkp, and somehow Talk doesn't work anymore with it.

First off, I have suffered from the same issue but found a solution. Secondly everyone should be aware that it depends on the Android version you are currently running if the Google Play Services can be downgraded without an issue. The best version that works with talk, maps & gmail is 4.0.31... if anyone needs a copy let me know! -RFE
I can confirm this issue... It is rather frustrating that I now have to use hangouts.

I have the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the S4. On my S2 Google Talk works and on my S4 it doesn't. The both have the updated version of Google Play Service. So as for me that's not the solution.
I'm still trying to figure out a way for Talk to work on my S4.
Hangouts has grown on me. It was a bit bulky at first, but the UI is the same as Gmail and the new email app for 4.4 so I've gotten used to it. Plus now it can handle SMS messaging too its essential.

It just doesn't do what I want it to do. I don't want all my contacts mixed in the same basket. IM contacts, email contacts, gmail contacts and phone/SMS contacts are NOT the same pool and I don't want them to be in the same pool. I want to be able to logout of IM and have people in the IM pool NOT BE ABLE TO CONTACT ME, for example - and right now I don't even have that anymore even if I never ever use Hangouts (which I don't). People can IM me when I'm offline and it goes to gmail and sits there for a week or two until I open gmail.
Again, I have no problem with Hangouts as The Big Social Integrator, but they should've left Talk out there for those of us who do not WANT it all integrated.

[Q] "ok google" voice activation doesn't work (nor does OpenMic+!)

Hi xda! (been awhile since I last was here...)
I seem to have a problem with my Ultra (C6833), Android version 4.4.4 (official), not rooted, just plain stock Nordic rom via OTA. But using Google Now Launcher.
I can't seem to make "ok google" work with voice only. The settings -> input -> voice search -> "ok Google" detection -> From any screen -page doesn't register my voice *at all*, nothing happens on that screen. Also on any launcher screen or Google Now, saying "ok google" doesn't have any effects what so ever. When I manually click on the mic icon on any of these pages, Google now works perfectly and most of the time I don't have any trouble it understanding me (not native English speaker).
I tried installing OpenMic+ and tried that, but almost the same happens with that. It works when the actual OpenMic+ program is open, but NOT when it is in the background.
The same settings DO work on my Note 8.0 just fine, and the mic works on the Xperia when making calls (or after clicking the mic icon, voice search works fine). So what gives?
if you still need help with this first make sure your play services google (search or now whichever u decide to call it)play store an gmail are up-to-date last two may not be necessary not i an others have had issues when not once thats done clear cache an data in apps section under settings for Google an play services
Oh, thanks and yeah, haven't gotten it to work. I forgot to clear the caches, silly me. I did check that everything is up to date. I'll try clearing caches.
Ok everything is up to date and clearing the cache still doesn't do it this should be magic goto Google now go to settings go go to voice go to offline speech recognition set auto update to always over data or WiFi go and download UK English language for offline once it's done go back to the installed tab press and hold English UK the selected close Google now open it back go back in that same section and press and hold English us language to select it now try your okay Google

EDIT: SOLUTION FOUND! SEE BELOW
I'm having the exact same problem with my Xperia Z2.
Any further advice would be amazing. I'm running Android 4.4.4 and read that some apps can interfere with 'ok google', but I can't track down this problem.
Changing languages doesn't seem to help (I tried Australian in the past). Can someone confirm the above worked? I'm running on limited data plan here and would like to avoid recklessly using it up ;(
EDIT: After browsing for a few hours a few days ago looking for a solution, just after writing this post, THAT article showed up. And 'ok google' works now!
http://ausdroid.net/2014/05/08/fix-google-now-voice-commands/
It was LastPass accessibility service running in background! After turning it off, 'ok google' works now
For the record, to this day I haven't been able to make it work on my Xperia. It works perfectly on my Galaxy Note 8.0 and my HTC One M7, but for the life of me, I have not been able to get it to work on this Sony device. It keeps working the same as always - works perfectly with manual activation, but I cannot get the "Ok Google Detection" to do ANYTHING. (the page where it asks you to say "ok google" three times to "learn" your voice). It just does nothing, it does not register my voice at all on that page.
So glad found this post!
dark_skeleton, you are my HERO!
I couldn't find a solution for this problem for around 4 month!
I was already thinking that there is a hardware problem in my phone,
and just for the chance of succession checked Google again, and SO GLAD I DID!
I used 'OK Google' detection on a daily basis!
In my case, the problem was the application "Informer for SmartWatch".
It was using an accessibility service and blocked the voice recognition.
AnttiV, try going to the accessibility menu and check what services there are external (not pre-installed by Sony).
Seems like it really helps!
Thanks again dark_sekeleton!!

WileyFox Swift 2 X - Google Phone Dialler (com.google.android.dialer) incompatible

Hi,
I have recently bought a Swift 2 X and am starting to think it may have been a mistake. I would really like to remove the pre-installed TrueCaller dialler and replace with the standard Google Phone from Play Store.
After contacting WileyFox support they told me:
I'm afraid that you cannot delete Truecaller from your device, however you can disable it which stops it from being able to access anything on your device.
Before you do this however, I would recommend to download another dialler from the Play Store. As soon as you have done this, you can safely disable Truecaller.
To disable TrueCaller please go to Settings > App and then scroll down to TrueCaller tap on it and then tap on disable.
Click to collapse
When accessing the Play Store from my device the Google Phone app isn't visible (due to it being incompatible) and for confirmation of this when I view the app on the Play Store from my PC there is a message telling me "This app is incompatible with your device".
I am running Android 7.1.2 Build TOS249H-N2G48B. Can anyone tell me why the app isn't compatible or if there is a way I can get it to work please?
I installed it from apk mirror (there's a 'nonnexus' version from 5 december 2016 that works fine, other versions don't work).
Might I add that this is the one fix this phone really needs? Your purchase wasn't a mistake, the phone is quite good (value/money wise & software support wise), they just made the mistake of bundling this dialer...
EDIT - if you don't want to sideload, you can always try zero dialer or exdialer (both of which get somewhat favourable reviews online)
Great! Thanks very much for your advice - I'll give those options a try.
Set as default dialer
I figured it how to make the Google dialer work properly. You've got to go into the apps section of settings then click on the cog at the top of the screen.
Near the bottom of the screen you'll see phone app, click on that and choose Phone. Hey presto, it works!

This is on one of my WileyFox Swift 1, the other is still on 6.0.1
Thank you very much for zero dialer (Play Store), I have been struggling with the default basic Truecaller ever since I downgraded (YES, not a typo) from 6.0.1 to 7.x.x
The lack of call blocking drove me to trying to solve the problem again.

Are you able to get Google Assistant to launch with a locked screen?

Hola
I have the Canadian variant LYA-L0C. I only very recently got the 9.0.0.146 update. Even before the .146 I am unable to get Google Assistant to launch from a locked screen. If I am on the phone, and it is unlocked and I call on Google it works without issue.
1. Yes, I have enabled Unlock with Voice Match in the Voice Match settings of Google Settings.
2. Yes, I have already tried uninstalling any updates to the Google app, but it still doesn't work.
3. Yes, I have already tried using the beta release of the Google app, but it still doesn't work.
4. Yes, I have already cleared the cache and storage for the Google app and reconfigured it, but it still doesn't work.
5. On our device variant there is no ability to select US English as the default phone language, this selection simply does not exist. This was at one time or another a key setting that you had to use to get Google Now / Assistant to work properly.
Am I the only one with the issue? Any advice?
I can bring up assistant when my screen is off, but it won't unlock the phone, I still have to unlock. But assistant work's.
To get assistant to work correctly I did the following
Disable assistant
Enable assistant
Update from playstore
Reboot
Retrain and set up assistant.

I have the same Canadian variant and I am not able to get Google Assistant working properly as well when the phone is locked. I will try what Darkat70 suggested and see if it works.
Additionally, I don't think the Google assistant is integrated with the system? I said "set my alarm for 6 AM" but just ended up with a google search. Same with weather, navigation, or other simple functions.
Even on the Pixel 3 now, the assistant won't unlock the phone. So it's very limited as to what it will do while locked.

Me too
In my case it doesn't work because I have work email added in Gmail and the admin didn't allow the security option to unlock with voice. Check in your Google account settings under Voice -> Voice match T its allowed there or not as per the attached screenshot
Just a heads up but it was announced by Google that the Voice Match Unlock was being removed as it was deemed insecure. It's quite normal for it not to be working. This started with moving from Android Nougat to OREA and now PIE with Assistant 8.39 and above. It's not only affecting this device, but this will also be the reality for all newer devices using Android.
https://9to5google.com/2018/10/26/google-killing-android-voice-unlock/
Mine works, but only after I went through about 50 cycles of disabling/enabling/training/uninstalling/installing every part of the Google infrastructure. Oh, and that includes wiping caches, manual installs of .apk's, etc, etc, etc. During all of that things would work a little different every time. It is obviously a bug of the OS combined with a bug in the Google Assistant crap.
I have had the same issue since m20p was launched. Solved it rather easily after some research. As USA and UK have strict rules on cell phone usage while driving, us and UK English cannot unlock phone. I switched over English Hong Kong as primary language and GA voice unlock has gotten back to how it is supposed to. I hope this helps

Question My "Assistant voice typing" and "Auto punctuation" are greyed out on my Pixel 6 in Gboard settings

I got the exact same problem where on my son's phone this works
Update, got it enabled now and it works with multiple languages. Since I'm from Germany I have German and English enabled. I don't know what exactly was the trigger, but I played around with language, language settings and offline languages, re-configured everything, re-downloaded languages and so on in assistant settings. The problem must be somewhere there. Maybe someone finds the exact spot

Yes, the voice is already trained.
I'm having the same issue. Out of curiosity, for anybody having the problem, do you have a work profile set up on your phone? I know that with my Pixel 4, some of the new Google Assistant settings were unusable when I added my work account because my employer didn't have some setting enabled in Google Workspace.
I'm wondering if this is related to the same thing. I haven't gotten around to removing that account to see if that clears up the issue yet. I can report when I have time to try that.
Edit: That does appear to the culprit for me. As soon as I deleted my work account, I was able to activate that setting.
So far after re-adding my account, it's stayed enabled, but we'll see... If this is the culprit, I believe it's likely related to this:
Turn Search and Assistant on or off for users - Google Workspace Admin Help
Google Assistant is not available for managed Chromebooks. As an administrator, you can control who uses Google Search and Assistant services with their Google Account. Just turn the service on or of
support.google.com
Thank you brc64! I don't have a work profile set up on the phone, but I did have one work Google account and one Google account from a non-profit I volunteer for on here. I removed the non-profit Google account and the options became available. I, too, added the account back, and both Assistant voice typing and Automatic Punctuation are still enabled.
I haven't gotten it to work yet. Figures I'd run into this! Have us English set everywhere only and downloaded us offline English. Hopefully I'll be able to sort it out! Of all the silly things that's not enabled by default when we turn on voice typing... Thanks Google
Update: I think it might actually be server side change or from an app update. I updated all my apps and it started working shortly thereafter.
I tried all the solutions listed but nothing worked. What fixed it for me was to force stop Gboard. Clear cache. Then select uninstall updates. Let's Google play store update it. Then repeat the same with Google app (force stop, clear cache, uninstall updates then update.) Initially had to force stop Gboard again then open and that's it, boom it worked. Hopefully this helps.

Is it working for you in both languages? Because I'm bilingual as well and although I can switch the toggle, the true assistant voice typing is only working in English. When I switch to German, it uses the old voice typing method. You can tell the difference by the icon the little microphone has. The assistant voice typing has the newer logo.
It's something on the server side. I was on the phone with them yesterday for 90 minutes trying to get the problem resolved, then this morning some type of download came through and it was fixed. Fixed. Just be patient and you'll get it resolved. As a matter of fact, I'm using the service right now
I concur with the server side assumption. I finally got it to work, when I revmoved a second language both from Gboard and the assistant. But since I need to be able to switch to English regularly, this was too much of a hassle, so I reactivated the second language. This took me back to the regular voice input and grayed out the option for the assistant for voice typing.
I did not change anything since then, but I just found, that I now could switch on Assitant voice typing again and it works with multiple languages at once. There have been some auto updates over the play store this morning, so this might have to do with this.
Try to update all apps in your Play Store profile. If this does not help, I guess patience is all that can.

In my case I am running German (Germany) and English (US)
I can confirm this is caused by multiple language, and specifically it is in your google voice assitant setting.

Is it working for you in both languages? Because I'm bilingual as well and although I can switch the toggle, the true assistant voice typing is only working in English. When I switch to German, it uses the old voice typing method. You can tell the difference by the icon the little microphone has. The assistant voice typing has the newer logo.

Unfortunately I did not. It works fine in English, but no shot getting it to work in German when I have both languages in my assistant, the phone and the Gboard turned on.
Mine just stopped working this week without me doing anything. It's greyed out.
