It is a pressure (barometric) altimeter which determines the altitude based on the pressure with some calibration. Known altitude, pressure, and temperature of a near reference point can be used to calibrate PaceUp to give more accurate altitude. By default, the International Standard Atmosphere (ISA) values are used.
This is one of my Pace(X) series (On, Off, Up & Down).
Disclaimer:
It's important to note here that it is just impossible to determine the exact altitude based only on air pressure. This is because it deals with many non-uniform factors such as temperature, humidity, geo-asphericity, and variation of gravity. I am not responsible for any bad things caused by using this app, and blah, blah, blah. You are solely fully responsible for your own safety.
With that being said, PaceUp can give pretty good altitude reading when calibrated with good local reference values. It's pretty accurate for measuring an object height. With no calibration, you still can measure your own height.
Installation:
It is an APK file that can be installed on Pace/Stratos/Verge using ADB or other means.
Here is how to use ADB.
To uninstall via ADB,
adb uninstall com.anox.paceup
Usage:
Once opened, the app automatically shows the current pressure and the altitude of the current location using the ISA default values or the previous reference values if available. The altitude shown is relative to mean sea level (MSL). That means the (vertical) distance between the watch and MSL. The altitude reading is automatically updated when the pressure changes. Also, the screen is kept on while the app is running in the foreground.
- P is the current pressure reading at the current location.
- P(r) is the pressure at your reference point.
- A(r) is the altitude at your reference point.
- Clicking on any of these values pops up a custom keypad to change its value.
- The R button retrieves the saved reference values and puts them into the reference fields.
- The B button loads the current pressure value from the barometer into the P(r).
- The D button resets all the reference values to the ISA defaults.
- Units can be changed by clicking on the unit button at the end of each row.
- The calculated altitude (A) has the same unit as A(r) and P has the same unit as P(r).
- The Z button zooms in on the calculated altitude (A) so that it is easy to read. The 1st tap on the zoomed-in screen rotates the text -90 degrees. The 2nd tap rotates the text 90 degrees. The 3rd tap gets out of the zoomed-in screen and back to the normal screen.
The last reference value set is saved before closing/putting the app into the background.
The B button makes it easy to set the 0 m/ft reference level, and convenient just to see the current pressure value from the built-in barometer.
Calibration:
The most accurate readings can be obtained by using the current reference values from the nearest point. Just enter the values and the calibrated altitude is automatically shown.
Tips:
Airports around the world have METeorological Aerodrome Reports (METARs) available for the public. METARs contain current temperature along with QNH which is the atmospheric pressure adjusted to MSL. METARs can be obtained from many online sites such as
https://www.aviationweather.gov/metar
So, if you don't have any near reference point, what you have to do is:
- find out your nearest airport's ICAO code
- get the current METAR from some website
- enter T(r) with the temperature, P(r) with the QNH pressure, and leave A(r) as 0
Examples of usage:
Supposing I am at Queen Charlotte Track in New Zealand and I don't have any near reference values. I'd get the current online METAR from the nearest airport which is Wellington International Airport using this link. https://www.aviationweather.gov/metar/data?ids=NZWN
The current METAR code I got is: NZWN 260230Z AUTO 01026KT 9999 FEW027/// 21/12 Q1012 NOSIG
In the METAR code, the word starting with Q is the current QNH. So, I'd calibrate PaceUp with P(r)=1012 and A(r)=0.
To measure the height of an object:
For example,
> Measure your own height
No need to calibrate, just use the defaults. Place the watch on the floor where you're standing and take an altitude reading. Then, place the watch on top of your head while standing straight and take another altitude reading. The difference between the two readings is your height. You can also use the procedure described in the next section.
> See in real time how high you climb up a mountain:
Before starting climbing, calibrate the app using the current pressure (by clicking the B button) and leave Ar as 0. This is your reference level and the altitude reading should be 0. While climbing up, the actual altitude reading is the height above your reference level. (Negative altitude reading means it's below the reference level.)
Note:
The app is free for personal use. Please do not upload it to other sites.
If you like my work & want to buy me a cup of coffee or beer, I've just added a Paypal donation email to my profile.

Version 1.0
Initial release

Though my app creation/testing is quite limited to my resource, I still find it's more accurate that anything else avialable on the watch.
Please do share your experience of using the app.

I will try it this weekend. Many thanks. I am surprised that no one has made an app that shows the rise & fall in atmospheric pressure for local forecasting. My old Suunto had it. There is a pressure graph app but the intervals are too short, minutes or seconds, so it collects way too much data.

That's a nice app. +1 from me

Great,
This is a long waited app for Pace.
As a first improvement I would suggest to keep the settings when you close the app
Regarding the temperature, how are using it?
In my experience wearable are not at the ambient temperature due to proximity to the body.
For instance, I have good result if I use the default temperature of 15C instead of the actual temperature.

Hi @anox,
I'm trying to calibrate the barometer of my Pace.
I use the METAR info of the nearest airport to me, El Altet airport of Alicante.
It is very close to sea at sealevel.
I put the info in your app, but the altitudes value calculated is very wrong (attached image).
I notilced a few months ago when i'm doing an activity the altitude stuck at first value and does not change at all.
I had the hope calubrating it with your app the issue will be fixed, but ir isn't,
So, there is any way ro reset the barometer in order to see if it is fixed?
Thx.

@jmpcarceles
This app does not "calibrate" the sensor, it allows you to use standard values to get an estimation of the current altitude.
First, you must make sure the barometer is working: make sure the hole that leads to the sensor is clean, and that the value changes in the app when you put the watch at the floor level and above your head. If it doesn't but you get a value, try turning the watch OFF for at least 15s (restarting isn't enough). If you get zero or a non sense stuck value, maybe the barometer was damaged by water.
I also think that saving the current values would be nice, and also an option to record the altitude every 30min or 1h.

T(r) is the temperature at the reference point. The temperature of the watch location isn't taken into account. By the way, none of these watches has a thermometer.

Please see lfom's comments below yours.
On the software side, you may try clearing cache/data of the built-in barometer related apps or perhaps factory resetting the watch.

Most of the time the reference values will change from the previous ones. METARs typically are generated once half-hour or an hour. Anyway, I also can see in some cases it may be convenient to be able to retrieve the previous reference values. So, an option to do so will be in the next version. The altitude recording is not on my list though.

Thanks for that, I'll try it the next time I'm climbing longer distances.

Dear anox
Is it possible to determine the altitude by GPS?
I have removed the barometer of my pace because of battery leakage.

Sure. That is how most smartphones determine the altitude.
On your Pace, have you tried the built-in compass widget? The altitude is determined using GPS.
If that doesn't work, there may be some GPS apps on the Play Store that can run on Pace and give you altitude readings.
I believe the altitude accuracy from GPS is less than that from a barometric altimeter, though.

Then Download link of 1.4 version not working, please fix it.

Just tested, working fine.
All my apps are hosted on the xda-developers server and all the links are direct.
If you cannot download any of them, it could be the server, your end, or something between.

Amazing app
Hi, could you put a beep (sound) when the altitude gets to up ou down? The beep would help flying paragliding, like a variometer warning. Congratulation, it's an amazing app.

Technically, that is possible. The thing is only Verge has a speaker. Pace and Stratos don't.
I don't have a Verge, so I have no idea how one would sound like.

Hi
Thanks for your answer
My problem is that in running the watch log the GPS data
But there is no altitude log, I mean it is fixed all over the exercise and is not changed in the log.

There is a serious discussion here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/smartwatch/amazfit/amazfit-pace-gps-altitude-data-missing-t3822938
You may find Ifom's comments useful somewhere there.

Hi, thanks for the great app.
Is it possible to display the current pressure value? E.g. clicking on the A (orange rectangle) could switching between altitude and pressure.

I may do a revised version of the app later, with something like that.
In the meantime, you can just press the B button to see the current pressure value in the P(r) field.

[FIX] Easy Calibration of ERIS Rotation Sensor (G-Sensor) on AOSP/CM ROM

My ERIS g-sensor has a tendency to get out of whack. What I mean is that if you leave autorotation on with the phone lying flat, the screen will often rotate 90 degrees as if you were holding it in a landscape position. If you download a level app, it will show level surfaces as not level. Any while several gps and level apps allow you to calibrate what level is, they do not affect the autorotation being off.
The g-sensor is easily calibrated on a stock sense rom in the settings menu. But AOSP and CM ROMs do not provide a calibration tool, and calibration is reset with every newly flashed ROM. So, for a long time, I just turned off autorotation.
I did find a fix, adapted from here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803242), but simplified below.
What you need:
A CM or AOSP ROM. I've tested on Condemned Soul's CM7 ROM.
A Root File Manager App with Text Editor capability. I'm using ES File Explorer
GPS Status App or another level or sensor app
1. Open GPS Status App (or other sensor app). Lay the phone on a flat level-ish surface. Observe how far the "bubble" in the center of the compass is offset from "level" or the solid circle in the middle of the compass. You can numerically see what the Pitch (up-down) and Roll (left-right) offset are. When calibrated, these numbers read 0 and the bubble will lie on-center.
2. Press home button, then open your file explorer. Navigate to /data/misc and locate the AK8973Prms.txt file. You may want to make a backup of this file, in case anything goes wrong. Open the file in the text editor. Locate the following:
AOFFSET.x=0
AOFFSET.y=0
3. Adjust these values by increments of 1 (or -1) until the GPS app shows it is level. Here's how: To move level left, change AOFFSET.x=0 to AOFFSET.x=1 then save the file. Long-press home to select the GPS app and check for level. If not level, increase to AOFFSET.x=2, save, and check again. Repeat until roll is level, then modify AOFFSET.y=0 until pitch is level. My final values are x=4 and y=-4. I haven't tweaked the z value (that is vertical level or plumb) but you can calibrate the same way if you have a plumb surface (like a newish house door). I live in an old house - nothing is plumb!
4. Enjoy your calibrated G-Sensor.
In GPS Status, does menu->tools->"calibrate pitch and roll" help any? Maybe it just calibrates for the app itself and not system wide. I keep auto-rotate off most the time so I don't have much experience with the screen switching when it shouldn't.

Correct, the app just calibrates itself, not the system. I know, it's only a minor annoyance, but makes me happy...
Sent from my ERIS using XDA App
I wasn't trying to imply that you should turn off auto-rotate, was wanting to describe why I might have sounded like an idiot asking whether that tool did anything system wide lol. I can see it being more than an annoyance so I'm glad you found and shared a way to fix it.
No worries mgh! Lol

Thanks for posting this, klob! There are times when auto-rotate does come in handy, but then there are times when I don't want it on. I'll try this and see if it helps me out.

Gear Fit2 display timeout question

I wasn't in market for smartwatch, but Fit2 automatically came with a recent upgrade to Sammy Note 7 (both are sweet!). Is there any way to force the detailed watch face to stay? I know it could potentially be a battery hog, but I haven't found one yet where I like both the full screen and the scaled back screen. Thanks!
~Vol
...Settings, Display, and ENABLE - Watch Always On...
I have that one set. There are just 2 screens. When I shake my arm, a detailed watch face pops up with steps, calories, heart rate, etc. Then after a few seconds it switches to a scaled back screen that just shows digital time. I want the detail screen to stay.
ok...this seems like you need a Watchface which just displays the DETAILS of the 24H Log. As you said the display will default back to the WatchFace you have selected. Since the 24H Log isnt a watchface, you need one which just specifically displays the DETAILS info.
I suggest you check out the Galaxy Store, and see if there is something which fits your needs. I have over 300 to select from....i noticed some targeted specifically for fitness group, and prefer to see all their vitals on the watchface. Good luck, sorry couldn't be any more useful.
Exactly, the "watch always on" settings usually display a lighter face.
Samples
Couple of pictures attached. This is an aftermarket downloaded watch face called "Color Circles" or something like that. "Full" is the version I'd really like to see all day, but "Scaled" is what shows after about 5-10 seconds of inactivity. I can only think of one workaround. Does anyone know of a similar aftermarket selection that has a detailed face for the scaled back mode, or does the firmware in the watch only have a minimal amount of fields for designers to pick? Maybe it's a global limitation.

Yep, i have but not been in activities to proove improovements... ???
I have installed as well. No workouts yet. I have seen an extra menu item in run extra settings that is called virtual rabbit. I guess it is a ghost runner to keep you in pace. Interstellar watchface looks nice.
I can not understand what "real-time track in the real-time track page lock screen under outdoor sports" refers to.

I also noticed that and was wondering what the difference with pace alerts were. Both should notify you when you go outside a predefined pace, I guess.
Not done much since installing but the continuous heart rate appears to be more responsive when I move and thus my HR increases.
Previously I could go for a brisk walk and it wouldn't notice any change on the watch.
Fingers crossed its fixed.
On new watchface, there is a tiny heart on top. Does anybody get his/her heartrate shown on that watchface?
I do not think it shows heart rate. I have the eternal moment watchface which is showing HR data. Anyway I did not seem much changes, just the new watchface and the virtual rabbit. The update is mostly bug fixing which is a good thing. Still I am missing a cardio and yoga activity type.

Hi
I also saw a heart on top but there's no HR number. Is it simply a symbol?
To me prototype source will always be the best watch face but the new face is a nice addition.
Haven't noticed much new stuff, the UI seems more fluid but that just might be a placebo.
I hope the next update they make an effort to fix the pretty terrible step counting.
Tested it with a bit of cycling back from work. One thing I noticed is it no longer vibrates when auto-pause switches on and off.
As others said, HR seemed responsive and accurate (but that couldn't mean anything, since it was pretty much accurate when cycling previously as well). Will test it tomorrow morning with some trail running and, fingers crossed, I hope to see some good changes
Edit: Also, I noticed the bug with synchronizing rides to strava showing up as runs has been fixed.
Well, i don't know if it's a bug with the new firmware - but it does not sync the sleep datas anymore. I have the datas from last night on my phone but not synced with the Amazfi app....
I have also updated yesterday, continuous heartrate seems much more reliable now. Tested several times, finger on wrist and counting, real heartrate 58 watch stated 59, real 76 watch 76, 87/88 and so on, before update the watch sometimes measured a heartrate of 40 when it really was at 80 or 90 and it was always approx. 10-15 beats to low. Now it seems to be useable.
[email protected]: Sleep was tracked correctly last nigth but I had some cases (2 or 3 in half a year) when sleep was not recognized for no reason so it could be an issue not depending on this update. Sometimes sleep data were correct on watch but simply didn't show up in app, after several syncs sleep data suddenly appeared.
Edit: Steps are also more accurate now, watch starts counting now after 10 steps not 30 like before so short walks to the fridge are recognized now.

Seem still bad and not usable. Little test :
- Garmin F3 : 543 steps
- Stratos : 275 steps
so Stratos count almost half steps. I think it have still 1/3 real steps because Garmin count only after 10 steps.
So daily steps count with stratos still totally wrong
"Time to stand up, you've been sitting for a while" alerts seem broken now. Granted, they still only occurred while sitting, but I think I went to the fridge to get a beer 3-4 minutes ago, and now it says I've been sitting for a long time Maybe now it does not count small movements like short strolls, only longer ones.

Amazfit Stratos - New Firmware Update 2.3.8.0

Anybody received this update?
Popped up today on my watch.
Didn't read the changelog, so i am trying to find it.
I updated and having issues with upper and lower buttons. When watch is awake pushing upper button takes me to last watch screen to the right, not as previously one by one. Pushing lower button doesn`t work at all. On 2.3.7. everything worked fine. I tried unpair and pair again, but the same problem is still present. Help someone?

- Added "Sports Reminder" - can be found at:
Settings on the watch > General > Sports Reminder
1. Sports start reminder: automatically recognize the running and walking mode after opening, will remind the corresponding sports mode after 5 minutes of activity, and save the official data before;
2. End of motion reminder: automatically recognizes the end state of running and walking after opening, reminds the end after 10 minutes of the end of the activity and automatically pauses the movement.
- Added music playback control function during sports (the watch will display the control screen on the last screen after the music is played)
- Optimize motion center rate accuracy
- Optimize connection stability for iOS devices
- Optimize emoji expression display (temporarily does not support non-standard emoji expressions, such as partial expressions of WeChat)

a. Short press on the upper button to return to the dial directly on any interface, press the list of applications on the dial interface;
b. Short middle button functionality unchanged;
c. Lower button press to change to the previous layer interface on any interface. If the current tab is at the widgets layer, return directly to the dial.

2. The “sports record” on the left side of the dial is moved into the watch application list.
- Optimized in motion interface

- Fix the problem of swimming to calculate the number of steps
- Fixed some translation errors in English, French, and Italian
- Bug fixes
Don't update to this version. The new button functions seem to be really crappy.
I updated and hate it! Several good new options, but new buttons concept is awful!

I wouldn't say it's crappy, just something to get used to. If button layout were like that from the start you wouldn't even think about it. The change is just fine although I would like if they could be remapped or better yet remapped depending on the app.
But another issue in this version for me is that apk watchfaces do not work for me in sleep mode. It just shows blank screen. Anyone with this issue?
I just updated but it gives me problems with the watchface in standby of greatfit.
When unlocked the greatfit watchface is working but when locked the original or last selected watchface is showing.
Anyone got a fix?
Before the button layout was easy and effective. Upper and lower button for cycling thougth lists. Long press upper button for back. Now touchscreen has to be used. Buttons are almost useless. For Stratosfied I found a way to undo the new button layout. https://forum.xda-developers.com/sm...stratosfied-amazfit-amazfit-2-t3758506/page84 But it needs temporary root. How to get this? I already saw a lot of complains about the new button layout here and in Chinese forum. I should have read the update log completely before updating...

Yeah, blank screen was showing to me in sleep mode when watch was restarted with non working apk watchface selected. But yes, some apk watchfaces (not all) also don't work for me in sleep mode anymore and is showing as you said last selected working watchface when in sleep mode or some other.
There is still Amazfit phone app that needs to be updated to reflect these firmware changes but nothing should change anyway.

On latest firmwares, US and CN, all watchfaces based on GreatFit don't work on standby mode and they need an update.
To disable the new key mapping, check this if you have unlocked bootloader: https://forum.xda-developers.com/smartwatch/amazfit/mod-amazfit-stratos-2-3-8-0-disable-key-t3890560

Yup. Same problem here. None of the APK watchfaces seems to be working now, and the buttons are pointless. 2.3.8. is the worse update ever. 2.3.7.0 was great, everything finally worked for me.
As far as I remember if you unlocked the watch and swiped up to the quick settings menu and tapped the weather it brought up the 5-day weather forecast. Is it just me or this also stopped working with the new firmware?
The new firmware is by far better in indoor (treadmill) exercise that before.
The estimated mileage is much more close to reality.
The pace calculation was practically useless in the previous version but now it is much, much better.
On the other hand, the changes they did to the buttons use, is awful for me...
Before I bought the watch, I have checked the official info in the app in Help/Amazfit Stratos where I could read what the buttons do (it is still there, btw). I made myself sure that I can fully control the device using only the buttons which is of fundamental importance to me (operating in rain/snow with gloves, etc).
I would NEVER buy a watch without such obvious (to me) functionality. Therefore, from my point of view the new firmware "update" made the watch unusable.
If that's important to you as well, do not update.
Same here. 3 buttons were a big selling point. Now they made them useless. Can't image why because it is not the native behavior of their UI. When pressing the upper button one can see scrolling over all widgets. However on all firmwares they have rolled out the new button layout users complain. But they stick on it.
I had tried to get into the new button arrangement. It is usable together with swiping indoor but total useless outdoor with gloves or at swim pool. That is totally lame.
Good. I still can return watches to seller.
With new firmware training load is not calculated any more. It is just 0. Anyone experienced same?

I agree, new buttons concept is useless outdoor by bad weather like snow and rain.
Developper should better work on fix thinks that does not work (like lap time) than destroying what works good.
@Wechy77: Thanks, yesterday it didn't calculate but today it did. I did not reboot nor factory reset. Hopefully it was only a temporary problem.

2.8.4.0 just dropped for the Pace - lengthy changelog

Can't seem to grab the changelog to paste here but it looks like a good update!

Huh? Pace always have AlwaysOnDisplay, what are you taking about? If you get a black screen while screen is locked and you are using a custom APK watchface then you need to uninstall the current version, restart the device and seek for a new version that also works with Stratos firmware 2.3.7.0+, older APKs don't work anymore....
Calories are now much more accurate on my cycle

I think some of them exists in older roms already. ?
How do you disable the sport autostart ? Every time, as I am returning from walking the dog, I get a message saying I have started a walk - about 30 mins after it started
From some other thread:
lfom said:
Latest firmwares for all watches (Pace/Stratos/Verge) introduced "Activity reminders" (also called Sports reminders on Verge) that are supposed to auto-start and auto-stop recording activities, but they have a bug (besides the fact that I don't think they actually work as of now): even if both are disabled by default you must enable and then disable both options in watch Settings -> General or your activity most probably will miss the first initial and final minutes of GPS data. Simply enable both, quit settings then go back and disable them again and it should be fine.

Finally, Thai language support, but it renders text incorrectly in standby screen as it doesn't render upper and lower character, for example, words like "หู้" will be rendered as "ห" in standby screen, but it will be rendered correctly in active screen. Also, its Thai font is too wide.
Do you think that this update is useful?
gps not working
gps is not working after the update for me, did a factory reset but still not working
Apk watchfaces not working correctly with this new rom.
When the watch goes to sleep after x second timeout the screen either goes black or out showes previous wfz watch face or showes correct apk watchface but very grainy.

Same with my elliptic. Went from around 100-130 for an intensive 30-min session to around 420-440, about the same as what the machine actually gives.

Old APK watchfaces should be updated to work with newer firmware (for both Pace and Stratos), check if the developer released a new version.
