Mate 20 Pro IP68 Certificate - Huawei Mate 20 Pro Questions & Answers

Hi guys!
even do Huawei advertises Mate 20 Pro has an IP68 certificate, on my own phone i experienced that it does not comply. After 3 dips into pool not more that 40 cm depth, water penetrated into phone!!
just to give a heads up to everybody.
Anybody else had the same problem?

when will people learn that phones are not made to be taken into a pool or run under a tap.... ip68 or not i still am not going to put my expensive device into water.

you are very smart indeed.. i did not put it under a tap.. but the pool is a completely different thing.. doesn't matter if i took photos under water or it just fell in. The bottom line is that it should sustain water until 1,5 meters for half an hour, and it did not do that!!

IP Rating is based on test conditions of submersion in up to 1.5 meters of fresh water for up to 30 minutes.
Not a chlorinated pool. Not a filthy puddle. Not a bath filled with soapy bubbles. Not fizzy juice. Etc etc...
Test conditions. Fresh, clean, pure water and a brand new handset that's never been dropped or smacked to loosen any waterproof seals.

I hope that the idea of it being able to sustain a bit of water would save me from an accident like a glass of water being knocked over.
I certainly ain't gonna think okay it should be ok I might go for a swim. Not with a $1500 handset.

That's too bad, I was really hoping the IP68 rating meant I could use it in the rain. Too good to be true I guess..

Huawei cut so many corners on a premium flagship costing device. I ran mine under fresh water coming from sink for 5 seconds and sounds coming from both speakers are muffled to the point of being useless. I really hope they dry. Last huawei device I buy. Terrible.

That is expected for all water proof phones, same happened to my Samsung S7 / S8 after I took them to the pool. It is not the speaker is damaged, but un-dried water is covering the outside of the speaker, thus blocking the sound. just let is dry for a while, putting it in rice helps to speed up the process as it dries the moisture faster.
I sold my GoPro after I got S7, then after about 10 swims/pool plays, S7 also started playing up. So with a M20P now, I bought back a new GoPro. Best to keep the phones out of water for a piece of mind.

Huawei sells a case for the M20P if you want to use it underwater. Smartphones aren't normally meant to be used underwater whatever the IP rating.
Why is it that nearly every post that seems to be intended to discourage people from buying this phone comes from new accounts?
XDA is just turning into a site for fake posts promoting One Plus and discouraging the purchase of competitor phones.

As i see i joined XDA a year before you.. i don't post much.. but when i do it is with certainty..

Just think of "Water-resistant" and not "waterproof" for all phones created not just Huawei phones, unless they start stating in their advertisments that it is waterproof.

[Q] How durable is the GS2?

Hey guys,a question about the SGS2 popped into my head earlier that I had forgotten to care about.
How durable is the GS2?I mean without silicon cases etc.It depends on the quality of the plastic used.
I know that the screen is pretty durable for sure(isn't it Gorilla Glass?),but what about the rest of the phone. From what I've heard, the original Galaxy S was pretty durable(heard stories of phones flying out of cars' windows etc),and my current Desire HD is really durable("really" is there because I have personal experience from the phone, not because it's more durable than the GS or something).
I intend to take care of my phone(Who doesn't take care of a 600 euro phone? ),but you cannot never be too sure!
Any feedback WITHOUT FLAMING OR HATING INCLUDED (taking precautions here as some people tend to defend the awesomeness of Sammy's phones with far too much zeal) is welcome.
Still eagerly waiting for the phone to arrive!
A lot of people think plastic automatically equates to bad build quality. Well, the Galaxy S II is proof that isn't the case -- it doesn't creek and there are numerous reports of people dropping theirs with no marks.
To sum up - does it feel as tough in the hand as my old HTC Leo? No. But does that mean it isn't? Not necessarily. I have had mine for a month with no build quality issues and long may it continue.
Durable = lasting in spite of hard wear or frequent use
So time alone will tell one month most definitely will not .
jje
Well,I am happy to see you two guys here(You ermmm...answered in a not so wanted manner in my other thread, remember?).Perhaps we started wrong, but never is too late now,is it?
I never said that plastic means build quality is bad. It's just more likely to mean so than aluminium is,because there are various qualities of plastic and no one can guarantee(is it spelled like that?I'm studying atm so my English is a bit out of the ordinary, too many mistakes, sorry) that a manufacturer uses high quality plastic.
However it doesn't need to scream quality. My father has a Panasonic DSLR which is mainly(if not completely) mad of plastic. It has fallen on soil, water, rocks(in a cave-holy sh*t that man! ) and other surfaces numerous time and there is only a tiny(Like the tip of a nail) piece broken from the lens' cover.Nothing serious considering it's been going through that stuff for about four years now!
What I wanna say is that the GS2 might prove far better than most of us believe.
Did you guys own a GS1?What are your experiences from it?I mean apart from the usual problems with the device, like gps.
Again, thanks for your replies guys!I hope we will be cooperating and understanding each other better in the future!
(I hope I don't sound like a politician,but we have to be polite,don't we? )

Don't say one month won't tell anything.Give a phone to my sister. If it survives the month,it's most likely extremely lucky or extremely well made!
Like the original sgs id say its a lot more durable than it feels- Ive droped mine already, but didnt get a scratch
Yes i droped mine within 10mins of opening the box lol it bounced but no marks chips cracks scratches nothing. On the other hand i droped my desire hd when i had it and that gained a dent in the top both droped in my living room so they both took the same tumble and hit the same floor.

Hard to say, wait some weeks for more stories to develop
I'd say since there aren't many (any?) people screaming "ONOES IT BROKE ALREADY", it's probably made pretty well.
If it had truly bad build quality there would surely be some people complaining about it by now!
Once I got mine, I thought it felt like a toy and got a case for it immediately, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be able to survive a drop. It just means my financial paranoia got the better of me

Hopefully I'm getting mine tomorrow but If you look at the situation in which you'll drop the GSII logically.
(Correct me if I'm wrong, btw )
If you drop it, it's lighter, meaning it has less momentum on it, meaning that there's less force acting on the phone when it goes "smashing" into the ground and is there's less force, it's more likely to survive.
OFC not sure how that situation will take place in real life though.

Well,in a similar scenario my DHD kinda damaged the floor more than the floor damaged it.
Well, comparing the two isn't really that much fair.See,the way I see it,the biggest advantage of the plastic used on with the Galaxy series is that the reduced weight of the phones makes the force with which they hit the ground, should they fall, much smaller. And,using common sense, this means less damage.
That is my opinion though!

One more question guys...
How is Samsung with their warranties?Do they honour it as they should? And how do they treat people with rooted devices?
HTC is well known for the fact that they are quite good with their warranties so,coming from a long line of HTCs,I'd like to know about Samsung too.
Thanks!

It feels fragile, but like someone just said the amount we've paid for them does instill some paranoia. I had my first test yesterday. In a Case-Mate Tough Case, the phone fell out of my hand, dropped arrow straight vertically and landed on one top corner. It then flopped on its face. This was on a concrete floor. I know the case saved it, but regardless the shock it took was pretty severe. So it's not frail and I'm now a Case-Mate fan.

Are you buying sim-free? And I haven't heard any rants about warranty, so I'm assuming it's good.
Plastic definitely has it's advantages. When you think of all the shattered iP4's, and the comments above about dented aluminum HTC's it might be a blessing. That and of course weight has me thinking maybe the Sensations hand feel might not be so great when it's out of your hands....and into gravity's
I dropped mine 12 days ago.
Took it out of my pocket whilst hurrying to get to a meeting I was late for, juggled it, managing to launch it to about 5ft in the air before it landed totally flat, face down on concrete with some small stones scattered across it.
That shattered the glass and broke the LCD screen. NO damage or marks anywhere else. It has been in for repair (£90 quoted) with the official Samsung service centre in Luton since Saturday 21st. Samsung are taking their time sending the replacement.
Just a little bit annoying!

How Waterproof is the Aperia Active?

I'm looking a waterproof, and hardwearing phone for my mum.
She wants an android phone that she can take kayaking with her. She is planning on using an app like 'endomondo' to track her activities on the river but when paddling you do occasionally fall in!
So... a question for all Active owners... how waterproof is it really?
It's not going to go very far underwater, a meter or so at most. The advertising blurb says it should be fine but was after some assurance from users that know!
many thanks in advance...
waterproof

Google something like "rugged phone 2011" - there are several phones that claim to be especially made for outdoor persuit activities and you'll be able to check the specs (and see what they actually guarantee). I'd also look at (less geeky) sites specialising in such activities - perhaps a canoe club or society. Good money says that they'll have greater expertise on this subject than the average software writer.
One other point - there are protectors available for many phones. The cheapest are basically plastic bags - the dearest are custom fitted, sealed hard-cases (pretty much the same sort of thing you get for cameras). You can find those in online stores but you may get more detailed infromation by looking at specialist outdoor shopping sites (you can always get the info then see if it's cheaper elsewhere).
hi thanks for the reply.
ive tried numerous searches however there are many phones that are 'coming out soon', or are simply in japan and not over here yet!
I was seeking some inside knowledge lol
I've seen waterproof cases for nearly every phone around however would rather it did not have to use a case as it it very important for it to be hassle free and easy to use. She will be upgrading from an old nokia in a plastic bag!
Although not entirely submerged, mine was tested in a glass of water at work during a lunch break.
Evidence: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7a0HH6brAQ
(but for super-rugged, I'd look at Sonim. Some models they'll apparently replace no-questions-asked if water damaged. Not android, however)
yes
Yes, but my experience says, the network coverage goes quickly down - the deeper You submerege the phone underwater. So speaking underwater or texting is not possible, but....
Camera still works fine even deep.
ha... i dont think she will use it underwater! Its just in case the boat capsises...
so ideally the phone would be ok down to about 2m... just in case!
Is there really not an android phone in the UK that will go down to 2m and survive?
i dropped my active in a bucket of water and left it there for 5 minutes
i discovered water between the main and the second cover and my voice sound robotic after taking a call , there was water in the mic hole ..
i will never drop it again for sure !!

Yes, the water is supposed to go between first and second cover. If You open it up, You'll see, the second cover has a seal to make it waterproof. So that's normal.
If mic is wet, the sound distortion is also normal, since water distorts it quite badly. The first cover holds the second tightly to keep it waterproof.
Would something like a Sonim XP3300 Force be suitable - around £250.
That phone is sold as water-proof to 2m for an hour and can even be dropped 2m into concrete without harm (it also claims to have the longest battery life of any phone in the world). Has A-GPS and the usual "extras" to go online etc. Buttons designed to be used whilst wearing gloves. It's basically designed for heavy industry.
Double check but I understand it comes complete with a load of "extras" included in the price - case, car and wall charger, dashboard mount etc - that may make the price more attractive.
It just made it into the Guinness Book of Records - it's officially the world's toughest phone
From personal experience I can assure you its
As waterproof as it should be. The obly review that managed to make me buy this phone was this: dcrainmaker.com/2011/09/hands-on-review-of-sony-ericsson-xperia.html
This guy actually makes a real life test of the phone. I myself work at construction so I have cement splashing on it, and all I have to do it take a shower with it to make it aaaaalright
Regarding the defy... Well its got a larger screen, but it looks more flimsy than the Active. What sorta put me off on the defy is the quality of the power and minijack rubber plugs. They would only last not so long on my hands... All you have to do on the active is change the back cover. The only drawback for me being accustomed to a physical keyboard amd a 3,7" screen of my Desire Z is the size of the onscreen keyboard of the 3 inch screen.
Also expect somewhat better battery life on the Active than the defy. Almost 50% of the battery drain is from the screen, and having 60% less pixels on a screen you easily go through 2 days of moderate-heavy use.

A company is releasing a waterproof phone this year, cant remember who it is, I thought it was LG.
Yeah the company is called Liquipel and they sell this spray that coats all the components with this thin coating of whatever it is, but still don't know if S3 has it, but since Samsung isn't shouting about it I'm guessing not.

Of course there is. Xperia active to name one.
This liquipel technology might not work that well.
Leo Laporte of the twit network (www.twit.tv) threw an iphone that was given this liquipel coating into a glass of water and it stopped working.
The s3 might be ok with a splash of water or even a short dip into it, but only if you are lucky. I'm sure its not waterproof and you would likely loose your warranty if it got wet and you wanted a repair.

No S3's gonna be even worse because iPhone has no battery cover you could seal the whole phone, but obviously you have to open the S3.
The phone is not waterproof at all!
I dropped 2 drops of water on it and my screen became green and black because the water ran on it through the hardware button! I had my phone in a bowl of rice for the past 2 days and its back as new again but this is unacceptable really...

There actually is. But it isn't a gs3. It Panasonic. They have a demo video using it in a tub of water. Crazy stuff.
All I do for waterproofing is carry a plastic food bag in my wallet and screen still works through bag so can use in rain, and I thought one of the Motorola Razr models has some kind of waterproofing film on.
I actually have a buddy with the Casio Commander. Its hardened / waterproof Android phone and I can testify that he will drop that sucker in a 5 gallon bucket and you can hear it playing music through the sidewall. Phone is always fine when he pulls it out. It doesn't even have a water damage indicator on it. Too bad its also a piece of crap else it might be pretty damn cool.

OnePlus 2 extremely susceptible to water damage

Ad the title says, be warned fellow OnePlus 2 users! As of about 3months of ownership, 3 features of my op2 have broken due to water damage, without ever getting water in the phone. Simply by leaving my phone in my bathroom during my morning shower, the finger print scanner and both cameras stopped working. The fingerprint scanner broke about a month ago after stopping for days at a time and hadn't worked since, I assumed that the damage was due to water entering the phone via the vapor from my warm showers. Just this morning, while keeping my phone a safe distance from my shower, water entered both the rear and front cameras. I managed to fix the rear camera with very light blowdrying and a bag rice, but the front camera has a horrible water "filter" that prevents any light from being detected. Obviously, km extremely angry with OnePlus quality control, never in 6 years of smartphone ownership has something like this been an issue, but I guess it's my fault for purchasing the phone. Be wary and keep your phone away from any water!
Never left my phone in the washroom when showering. Thought this was common sense. Unless they made it air tight, steam will be getting into the tiny gaps between the home button and case, or the camera lens. This is better than my TF101 which literally have a layer of dust on the inside of the rear camera lens.

So you left your phone a "safe distance" away, yet enough water entered to flood the camera and short the fp sensor. And you're angry at OP because they didn't explicitly tell you not to expose it to extreme humidity?

I don't think you get the point, it was a good 5 ft from the shower with moderately warm water with a vent and window open. There was not a large amount of humidity at all. I understand it is not wise to leave it like this but there was very little moisture in the room, and it was there for a maximum of 7 minutes. The fingerprint scanner broke by washing my hands then touching my phone. I understand I should not have had it in the room in the first place, but there is clearly a quality assurance issue when it comes to water, no other phone has had a problem like this for me, and that includes accidental submersion of my opo. I'm simply warning people to not make the same mistake I have, albeit I don't consider it too much of a mistake rather than too much trust in my phone
I think I've seen a thread like this for every device on xda (slight hyperbole).
Electronics and moisture/humidity don't go together.
Alright. I guess this was just a misconception in my part, but no need to criticize too much. I will accept the blame for the cameras, but the home button I honestly don't understand how a drop of water destroys it. I regret creating this thread, I didn't mean to sound rude or unappreciative, I was just fed up and in the moment. I fixed my front facing camera but my home button is still unresponsive. Don't make the mistakes I have, consider this thread merely a warning, don't be stupid (like me)
Seriously - I've taken ALL my phones into the bathroom with me so far, including those that were waterproof and those that weren't. NEVER had any issues, even when I showered with the windows closed. So I don't think a phone should break like that. And it makes me afraid to take my OPT out when it's raining or when I'm in the snow, if a slight bit of water can mess with the fp sensor like that (read in another thread that a user simply pressed the home button with a wet finger and it stopped working.)
Well, i bring my OPO n OP2 oftenly to bathroom, so i can read news and elses while doing what we all know, hahaha.
but when i'm showering i always put it inside my pants pocket.
so far no harm is caused by doing so...
yes, anytime there are openings in a device which would allow water or vapor in there should be added protection around that point. it's known as ingress protection or ip rating. the oneplus one has no ingress proection certification, my guess is the two also is not certified.
I've used my OPT in slight rain and I also like to listen to music while showering and its working like it is supposed to.
While this doesn't really help, it's crazy how much the device can vary unit to unit. With the ones reporting pretty much no submersion but taking bad water damage to this one:

Maybe using a decent case that covers up the phone will help in situations like this? on the flip side, i have taken almost every phone i own into the bathroom regularly and never had this kind of an issue...and it gets quite steamy in my bathroom when I'm showering...i take my Sony Z5P in there now and never had an issue...what I don't understand is that the One Plus Two was shown in commercials with water all over it no? Or that may have been the One...I thought this phone could handle usage in rain, etc with no issue...surely that's worse than humidity right? I think maybe you just got a defective phone or there may be something not working properly on the mainboard....I'd RMA it.

Dude, do you know that the Samsung Galaxy core gets damaged if the humidity is above 55%?
You've exposed a phone to about 90%+ humidity and you expect it to survive?
And I take my op2 to the toilet everyday. I'm typing from it right now.
Not meaning to contradict this but... I always take a shower while listening to music in my OP2 and nothing bad had happened to it (and I use a lot of hot water which causes a big amount of vapor). I've even splashed (accidentally) some water on it. I already have one month and 9 days with the phone working fine.
If the humidity messed with your HOME button try this, it really worked for me:

Just my 2 cents but guy c'mon a shower is common to fog plus have driplets or droplets dripping down the mirrors 12 feet away every single time I shower and you really think OnePlus is at fault here....
This is where So Called flagship companies win out in the majority's minds, Because every minor or major issue brought on by the avg. slow person (sorry but really chief) they just cover the device with a simple warranty and just replace replace replace.
I'd rather save $600.00+ on my Non Contracted Device from @oneplus and let people like you just go buy a Biphone or get a Samsung whatever the drones buy these days....
Stop Blaming OnePlus for your shortcomings in this life people it is just your cellphone.
In my opinion a damn good one coming from a OPO and after that a Nexus 5 all were priced right but definetly still improving every purchase.
Idk but i wash my op2 sometimes with water under a running tap and its completely fine.[emoji14] (only when it gets pretty dirty)

I've left this thread quiet for months now and have clearly taken back my comments. You don't understand the environment the phone was in, this shouldn't have happened, and other users have reported using their phone IN the shower. It's obviously not normal for so many hardware features to break when I've done this with no issues on every other smartphone I own. I'm not blaming OnePlus , maybe I'm just blaming my own model, but the events I went through are absolutely not normal

Took the Note 8 swimming today took these pictures

Phone worked good in water. Had to hit the volume button to take the picture.
After take your Spen out for a little while. Ha ha I took my Spen out a couple of minutes ago and it water in it.

Have you had other Samsung Phones that were waterproof? Wondering how well the oleo phobic coating holds up after being submerged in that type of water. I was tempted to take it into the water last weekend...but I had no reason to so I didn't, hahaha.

It still feels fine. Just like it did before I took it in the water. Now I did not keep it in the water all day. Just for a couple of minutes.

I've taken my S7 Edge and S8 swimming before and noticed no changes in the screen coating whatsoever.
I haven't taken my N8 swimming yet.

Don't forget to read the Samsung user guide before you take your Note 8 swimming. Just a heads up.

"DEEPSEA TEST TANK
Extreme depths
To guarantee the water resistance of the Rolex Deepsea divers' watch to the extreme depth of 3,900 metres (12,800 feet), Rolex tests every single one made in a specially designed high-performance tank. This stainless steel hyperbaric tank is cast in a single piece and weighs 1.3 tonnes. It simulates the pressure at 4,875 metres (16,000 feet) below sea level, some 25 percent greater than the depth indicated on the dial. At this depth, the force exerted upon the watch is equivalent to a weight of 4.5 tonnes. This test could be destructive, meaning that the slightest weakness in a watch would cause it to implode. Obviously, all Rolex Deepsea watches offered for sale have survived it."
This is one of a handful of watches that are so tested in official labs with highly qualified engineers.
I will now show the official watch industry water resistance table:
....................................................................................................................................
"Water resistance classification
Watches are often classified by watch manufacturers by their degree of water resistance which, due to the absence of official classification standards, roughly translates to the following (1 metre ≈ 3.29 feet). These vagueries have since been superseded by ISO 22810:2010, in which "any watch on the market sold as water-resistant must satisfy ISO 22810 – regardless of the brand." [5]
Water resistance rating Suitability Remarks
Water Resistant 3 atm or 30 m Suitable for everyday use. Splash/rain resistant. Not suitable for showering, bathing, swimming, snorkeling, water related work, fishing, and diving.
Water Resistant 5 atm or 50 m Suitable for swimming, white water rafting, and fishing. Not suitable for diving and snorkeling.
Water Resistant 10 atm or 100 m Suitable for recreational surfing, swimming, snorkeling, sailing and water sports. Not suitable for diving.
Water Resistant 20 atm or 200 m Suitable for professional marine activity, serious surface water sports and skin diving. Suitable for skin diving.
Diver's 100 m Minimum ISO standard (ISO 6425) for scuba diving at depths not suitable for saturation diving. Diver's 100 m and 150 m watches are generally old(er) watches.
Diver's 200 m or 300 m Suitable for scuba diving at depths not suitable for saturation diving. Typical ratings for contemporary diver's watches.
Diver's 300+ m for mixed-gas diving Suitable for saturation diving (helium enriched environment). Watches designed for mixed-gas diving will have the DIVER'S WATCH xxx M FOR MIXED-GAS DIVING additional marking to point this out."
....................................................................................................................................
As you can read "Water Resistant 3 atm or 30 m. Suitable for everyday use. Splash/rain resistant. Not suitable for showering, bathing, swimming, snorkeling, water related work, fishing, and diving." Rating 30M yet its only splash proof!
and.....
"Water Resistant 20 atm or 200 m. Suitable for professional marine activity, serious surface water sports and skin diving. Suitable for skin diving." Rating 200M yet in reality only fir for water sports and skin diving!
From this one can clearly see how the actual rating on the rear of ones watch is a complete joke.
A handful are exceptions like yours that is why I asked you about it. I come from a family of horologists and though watches are another one of my vices I am not a horologist myself. I have been saying for decades how the watch industry screws the consumer with these highly misleading water resistance ratings etched onto the rear of the case.
Same principle applies to our mobiles. The ratings are very VERY misleading. Add to that sea water or swimming pool water and the chemicals or salt will, over time, ruin the water resistant membranes of the mobile.
I will not start to write about the physics of static water pressure at small depths V water pressure at immersion levels when force of movement is added such as a swimmers arm. Swimming with a mobile places immense pressure on the device even at 1" depth. This is due to water pressure through movement not static depth. Enough already.
The best respectful advice I would give any mobile owner is to treat the 'water resistance' as merely splash or wet hand proof. Nothing more. Its a complex situation. Original Sony Z owners know all about it lol. Sony lost a massive client base over that fiasco and Sony themselves considered closing their mobile division.

Trust me I don't dive. Only swim and I don't make it a habit to bring any of my watches in the water. This was the first and probably the last time I will put this phone in the water. Just wanted to test it out. The pictures were for my Facebook DSSD community. Phones and watches are my thing too.

I understand completely. :good:
I don't take any of my watch collection near water. I don't even take them off in the bathroom and leave them there due to the steam! We are fortunate to own a tiny micro % of watches that can actually outperform the rating on the rear of the watch case! 99.9% of watches cannot, in reality, reach the depth rated on the back as shown in the table. Its rather a scandal yet the watch industry has NO OFFICIAL monitoring body for water resistance.
Oh, when I do go swimming I use a G-shock Gulfmaster. Very tough electronic time piece. Nice to debate with you.
BTW do you also collect pens? I can add that to my list of vices. Crap, forgot to add HiFi systems though over the past decade I have lapsed on that front! Thank heavens!

No I don't do pens. But I do see some very nice ones. Yeah I take very good care of my watches. I have the Rolex DSSD a Omega planet ocean 45.5mm 8500. A Omega Speedmaster 9300 and a Panerai Pam 000 G series. I just sold my Rolex Datejust 2 and my Breitling superocean 44.

Omega are a superb value watch. Not a fan of the Panerai design.
As well as the high end watches I own, such as the Patek Philippe, one of my favourite's is the Lange & Sohne, I enjoy very much Oris and Tissot! I tend to use them as my daily drivers. I nearly purchased a Breguet type XXI 3880 last month but need to sell an Audermars Piguet RO first or my wife will kill me! Again! Insurance is now silly money too.
You need to start a pen collection. :highfive:

My first started collecting watches my first automatic was a Tissot PRS 516 I still have it. I will never sell it. It's quality is that of a 2,000 dollar watch for sure. Today I think Tissot has gone a little cheap but they are still good watches. I came close to getting a Breguet type XXI a couple of months ago but it did not happen. I will get a AP Royal Oak one day. I can talk watches all day like phones. I might check some pens out and see. Thanks

The recession off 2008-present has had an awful effect on the watch trade in Europe. Even among the big three conglomerates they have had to fight an ever losing battle against digital imports now smart watches have dealt a further blow. Seiko et al started the traditional watch collapse in the late 60's early 70's with cheap digital but highly accurate watches. Took the watch industry years to recover even 20% of what it had been. Not doing so good again for some again now. Rolex isn't doing badly though but many have again gone to the wall or the 'name' been purchased by the Chinese machine. Mont Blanc have either changed hands or gone also Maurice Lacroix to name but two.
I was 11 when my mother bought me my first manual, it was a black dialled Oris. I just wanted a watch with a black dial! Smashed it to pieces in the school gym same year!
My mother ran a watch parts company that held nearly 200.000 watch pieces. One night the shop was broken into and thousands of small boxes containing tiny part where all emptied onto the floor 200,000 pieces mixed together. When they where collected they didn't fill a small bin! They never sorted them all out again, only a small %. Silly thing was they NEVER closed the till and left a small amount of cash to try and avoid such an incident. They trashed the place out of pure spit? Caused havoc in the local watch trade for over a year. People eh.

That must have been cool growing up in that type of business. Yeah that sucks some people's kids. I only have mechanical watches. No quartz watches for me. The only one I would have is maybe a Spring Drive. But I am not paying what they want for them. I do think Sekio really came up with something cool with that movement. I have always been fascinated by manual watches. The movement all the parts all the craftsmanship that goes into those movements its amazing.

I have spent hours and hours sitting looking at watch movements and pondering how the heck they made it. One reason I truly like the Lange is the way they finish off the movement. Typically Germanic as opposed to the Breguet that shows its French heritage.
Great to debate with you.
