My battery connector broke recently because I dropped my phone from a very decent height, so Instead of paying 100€ for a repair, I decided to do some research and find a used phone to replace the motherboard on mine.
I ended up searching for a used/refurbished motherboard on Taobao and I found the 4G+64GB MI5 motherboards for around 40$. But I also found a version with a moddified SOC that has 6G+64GB.
As you might think, this isn't possible for a Xiaomi MI5! If you do a quick search you'll find that it's not impossible to upgrade the RAM of a smartphone if you are very skilled whith soldering BGA chips (The Youtuber "Strange Parts" even made his own iPhone from scratch and upgraded its memory and storage to 8G+512GB if I recall correctly). But with the Snapdragon 820 it's not that simple since the RAM and ROM are all on the same chip (that's why it's called SOC, System On a Chip). Thankfully, there are 6GB+64GB versions of this SOC. So did the Chinese seller swap the chip of another device with the MI5 board???
According to many buyers, the board works fine and I bought it for 60$ to repair and upgrade (hopefully) my device. I'll be posting an update in around 40 days when I receive the parcel which I forwarded with Superbuy.
I hope you are as excited as me to find out if this phone is worthwhile keeping a year or two more with the great support of freelance developers who make custom ROMs for the community!
TL;DR: I discovered a motherboard on Taobao that is claiming to have 6GB of RAM and 64GB of ROM for the MI5. I'll update the details when I receive it.
I am really sorry for anyone who was expecting any sort of outcome from this purchase, but I regret telling everybody that the seller wasn't able to find the required parts to make the board for me.
An quoting BobLao's reply (post under this one), my phone is over two years old and I want to change to a faster and more battery efficient phone in the next 6 months or so. I lost the warranty of the device about three days after receiving the phone because I unlocked the bootloader and rooted it. I've had some difficulties over these years but I've been able to solve each and one of them. Even once I managed to brick the device; the notification LED was blinking with blue color and I had to make some jumpers to be able to flash through some Qualcomm proprietary software a new ROM.
What I understood from the seller is that he/she buys a MI5 used original board (probably the cheapest one available) and replaces the SOC with an upgraded one from another phone that's readily available. But I can't tell for sure since the seller stopped offering boards with those specifications.
I did in fact change the battery after some weeks because my device wouldn't stop shutting down every time I put it in my pocket or I left in sitting on the table. The good news is that the battery was the fault and not the motherboard
I'm really sorry to let you down. I'm certain that I was more disappointed than you were since I didn't get to play with a higher spec device u.u
This is the link for anyone interested in buying a replacement main board https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.14.26.9e9e6f77cWAeot&id=568921499054 . Search terms used: [GOOGLE TRANSLATE English -> Chinese] millet 5 main board -----> 小米5主板
As far as I can tell, this is stable and safe but I would not suggest you to do so unless you have tunnels to China fast because if that got wrong you may have to take few days even in China mainland to get your warranty. Besides, modifying with chips directly is largely depend on the worker who do so. Think twice, think wisely. If I were you I would just go out and buy a mi6. BTW, if it's just socket for cable you can also buy one online for about 2 to 3 USD without posting fees
---------- Post added at 02:08 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:05 AM ----------
And you can buy another battery for less than 10 bucks, there is also stores who can modify with ufs chip that as far as I know can get your phone up to 256g, with 6g ram for 100usd. But you have to send your motherboard or your entire phone to them
---------- Post added at 02:12 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:08 AM ----------
BTW doesn't the ROM being independent from soc?
I was looking for this modification as well recently in taobao and found out actually some of the sellers do offer ram and storage modification (Up to 6g ram and 256g storage). The idea is that you'll need to send the phone to them so they'll help you with the soldering jobs. Not just mi5 they can do tonnes of other phones mod as well, I even seen people modify the battery to ridiculous amount like 9k-10k mah which probably can last you 3 to 4 days of battery life.
could you share with us the url of your purchase?

Did you receive it? How does it work? Marked improvement in performance?
It's in use, not bad
This seller offers Mi 5 motherboard at a cheaper price.

You do not need to ship your phone to get it modified. You can simply buy a modified board and swap it.

after month of participation in this forum, i'll stop beeing actif here.
Indeed the battery I ordered is still not at home (i ordered it on 6 June....) and my battery is so ****ty now that the phone power off at 86%....
This pissed me off a lot, so i just ordered some other phone.
As I need a phone with removable battery (to not have the issue to order a battery in china), a SD card and 32GB internal memory which make very good pictures, who should last for 2 years or more, i choosed for once to pay the price and ordered a LG G4 (i planned to buy a nexus 5 2015 or a mi5 but these two are not out yet and i need a phone, can't wait one or two month like i already did... and bying a phone for 100-200€ to change and change for the phone i want in 2 month is not really what I have in mind.
So good luck to other owners.
The hardware in Nubia was ok before the battery issue, but as I am not the only one....
and the software... well it is not entirely bugfree but start to be in the right direction
For me this was the first nubia I bougth and it will be the last one ... Having hardware and software failures is really a no go for me.

Too bad you have felt so many problems. Wish you best of luck.
I'm running into a different direction : I repaired my old Xiaomi Mi2a , udate it with Miui 6 and an AOSP 5.1 version and ......surprise ! It look like a brand new phone ! I'm using my Nx507 only as a media player for few days.

I sold my Mi2 about one year ago.... it was a terrible idea ^^ as it is very good suported and still a very good phone :/
Same problem with the battery,i ordered one a few days ago from aliexpress.
Zte should take responsibility for this problem.
now I have my LG G4 and I must say I almost forgot how it is to have a smartphone that last more than 5 min ^^
I'm still a bit lost with the button on the back (and not physical button on the front)
but it react well, takes great pictures, don't become too hot when playing and of course has all fonctionnality fully working...
only bad point : the bootloader is locked, I can unlock it but the process is done with one LG official tool, so doing so will disable the warranty (that is something that I don't understand... not sure if the laws accept this... )
It is like you change the radio of your car and the manufacturer says : no more warranty...
My Z7 Mini also had a battery problem. The battery simply don't charge. Don't want another nubia also. Not reliable and ROMs very unstable.
Now waiting for a Xiaomi Mi 4i...
I had both a Z7 Max and Mini and loved both phones. Didn't have problems with either of them, but gave the Z7 Mini to my wife. She loved it as well but dropped it a few times until she killed it. I bought a couple of new phones and sold my Z7 Max.
I still miss that phone!
Hey devs,
for about 3 weeks I have been a proud owner of the RMN2 Prime until yesterday, when it suddenly turned off and died.
When I got the phone I started skinning it down with jaik's custom boot image and also cleaned it from unused apps. So far so good.
Now, some days ago I decided to switch over to danielpinto's CM12.1 , which is really awesome compared to MIUI. No problems either.
I also installed Greenify and Disable services to get rid of some battery hogs.
Yesterday, I was out of home whole day, had minimal standby battery drain, but really massive battery drop when recording a video (~50% to 25% in about 2min).
Put it in my pocket, and 10 min later it didn't turn on again. I thought it would be the battery, but apparently it's bricked. No charge LED, no PC recognition, nothing...
I tried to unbrick it via SP tool and some really unconvenient tutorials, but nothing worked. I guess I installed all needed drivers now, but SP tool doesn't show any reaction in the progress bar (the coloured bar at the bottom...I don't get ANY colour, nothing starts when I click the download button).
What to do?
The RMN2 is a pretty good phone IMO, but now also my first bricked one. I would be extremly graceful if some experienced xda devs could help me with this as I'm really desperated.
I'm from Europe and ordering a new one (if I'd need to) would take some weeks from now.
If so, have you any suggestions on which device might be a better choice? It should be in the same price range though.
Thanks for reading!
Best regards
If it is broken.... I guess new phone can be redmi note 3 pro.
Only thing I can think of is trying with a new battery.. (something must be wrong with it if it drained that quickly).
Thanks for your replies!

Well, after I used the camera the drain was normal again and stayed at 27%. I also removed the battery and directly powered it from my powerbank, but it never turned on or vibrated...and no LED...

The extra features of the 3 pro are not really attractive for me. I've found the Elephone P9000 Lite today and I think this might be great alternative. Or I give the RMN2 another chance. Not sure on this yet...

Wouldn't it be less costly to first spend 10$ on a new battery before buying a new phone? In regards to a new phone, I'd chose a Snapdragon 650 powered RN3 w/ a 4k mAh battery over the Elephone P9000 Lite any day of the week. My brother has one and it's an amazing phone. Of course it all depends of what you find important in a phone. What makes you go for the Elephone?

Really appreciate your thoughts, man!
If I could be sure that it was a battery problem I would of course buy a new one. But it really appears to be a hard brick (I tested it with the battery removed and the phone directly plugged to the charger -> no LED, no reaction) Also the PC can't recognise it anymore.
The RN3 might surely be a nice phone, but for me the fingerprint, slithly faster performance and the battery are not worth 60€ more.
I just stumbled over the P9000 Lite yesterday and it seems to have everything the RN2 has + more RAM, LTE band 20 and Marshmallow. Negative is the small xda community for it...
And today I just found Ulefone! Geez, almost the same company name, but whole different stuff...there are way too many china phones out there!
The Elephone is down for a Ulefone Power or Ulefone Vienna.
Any thoughts?
Btw FYI, my preferences would be:
- at least 3000mAH
- 5.5 inch FHD
- Android 6 (or via update) + maybe chance for N if it's not asked too much
- at least 2Gb RAM, processor level of RN2 would be sufficient
- I don't care about the camera quality at all
- less than ~180€
Does the phone vibrate when you plug it to the charger without the battery?

I got it from Gearbest and it's still in their 45 days warranty. I'll probably try to ask for a refund and order a new RN2.
Sending it back, fixing it, then sending it back to me would last monthes...
So I'll order a new one today or tomorrow, I'm just undecided between Ulefone Power or RN2.

Djeeeeeeeeeeeez thx a lot!! You've made me look at that Elephone P9000 Lite, then at that Ulefone Power (looks awesome w/ wooden back!) and now i'm considering passing on my RN2 to a family member and going on a spending spree (again) I wouldn't personally go for the Ulefone Power because of it's less than great MT6753 processor, 16GB (only) storage and Ulefone's custom ROM (planned upgrade to MM, but yeah don't think it'll get N).
I'm actually moving to China in a couple of weeks and one of the first things I'll do when I get there is go have a look at the Umi Super. Check out these specs:
- SHARP 2.5D 5.5 FHD display (Gorilla glass 3)
- Mediatek P10 (MT6755) @ 2.0GHz
- SAMSUNG 32GB eMMC 5.1 ROM
- SAMSUNG LPDDR3 4GB RAM
- SONY 4000 mAh battery
- PANASONIC 13MP dual flash camera
- TYPE-C USB / SD card up to 256GB / Fingerprint sensor / Dual SIM (shared 2nd slot w/ SD)
And when you thought it couldn't get any better, it comes with stock Android 6.0 (yes you've read that right!! it's a Nexus!!!!! ) and Umi offers a ROM flashing tool (Rootjoy) on their website and the tool allows you to flash a MIUI, VIBE, EMUI or LEWA ROM, made for the Super, to the phone
That is one hell of a crazy phone! Now I know in your requirements it says "less than 180e" and there is a time limited offer on Umi's homepage to get it for 179.99$ (not sure about shipping fees). Anyway, I'm gonna get it even if I need to shell the normal 249.99$ price for it (it's more than worth it if you look at the top class components they've chosen for the Super). So screw the idea of repairing your RN2, throw it in the bin (or put it up on eBay) and get that unibody aluminium one

Damn it, now there are 3 devices to choose from
The RN2 has a strong community, but bad battery..
the Ulefone Power has...ehm...power and MM, but is unhandy and has no community..
and the UMI Super sounds awesome, but has even less community and it will take monthes til it would be here with me!
Do you have a link to the 180 bucks offer? found it
And are you in anyway paid by UMI by chance?
EDIT: Ok, somehow got hooked by the Super Now the only question is where to get it fast and cheap
I can't stand getting along with my old Lg L7 for so long!

Not in any way., I only found out about Umi at 2am last night when I was still looking at the newer China phones xD You can go on their website and click on the Super promo on the homepage (Snap now) and it will show you all the supported resellers (Gearbest and alike + 1 shop on Aliexpress/eBay). The Aliexpress shop (Deal Home) seems to be the only one having stock already (there's a certificate signed by a Umi representative stating that Deal Home has the First launch exclusivity) and all the other shops won't be sending anything out before June 20th. I've taken a look at their flash sale system. First, you need to register for the coupon (which they mail every Wednesday to the lucky first ones) and then you need to wait on a flash sale day (there was one on May 23rd and the next one, which we'll miss obviously, is on May 31th). Only on those days, and at the following hours: 00:00, 03:00, 06:00, 18:00 and 21:00, can you get one for 179$. The 179$ phones will be shipped out after 7 days according to the shop. So this system 1) scks and 2) is not as speedy as we like.
But there's a second option. You can buy it in a presale (right now) w/o the flash sale crap for 219.99$ on Deal Home (there's a 10$ seller discount as well) and according to them, those phones get shipped out "24~48h after test well". Thing is, I'm not sure how true that all is since in the shipping option, it mentions "ships out within 28 business days" (but that might be a default aliexpress thing). I'd just contact the shop and ask how quickly you can get it (or the item is being shipped out) if you take the 209.99$ one. They have 81 gray ones and 97 golden ones left.
It is true that the dev community is pretty small, but how much of it do you need if they offer a stock ROM by default (w/ possibility of root, xposed, etc.) and many alternative ROMS as an option? The only thing they might not do (but that's the same for every other Android vendor) is to offer an upgrade to Android N. I checked their forum a bit and at least they're being honest and clear about it when and why one of their devices isn't being updated to a new Android version.
I just had a first look at the sellers today and at the moment they all sell them for about 190€ - 200€, which is still okay for me (especially compared to the RN3). That is efox, tomtop, Banggood and Gearbest. Aliexpress' Deal Home unfortunately doesn't ship to my country. But I saw that Gearbest also has this kind of flash sale on special days of the week.
They all seem to deliver from mid to end of June plus the shipping time itself. So it will be here in mid July at the earliest...

Ah the major downside of importing phones from China .. it takes forever to get them (unless you pay an extra 35$ for a DHL <8 days delivery).

In the meantime I ordered the UMI Super for 164€. I'm really excited, but have to wait until July at least, as it will be shipped from 25th June at the earliest -.-
And now I'm already wondering if I should send the Super right back to GearBest and buy a Vernee Apollo Lite.
I thought the Super would be the best of the best for this price atm, but when you see the Apollo Lite....
- Helio X20 Deca core (Antutu >90000)
- IGZO display that seems to be really power efficient
- better camera with better focus
and Vernee is said to get a lot of hours out of a 3000mAH battery. While the 4000mAH of the Umi might not hold what they promise...
I'm not really into the fastest processor available as you won't feel a big differnece in daily use anyway, but it still seems to be a better package overall.
Price ~200€, ~230$ pre-sale
I ordered aswell they working on the battery like the last update. Waiting for root =(

Little update and a question:
I'm currently pretty happy with the UMI Super. All I wish for is DTTW and a Wifi fix, but all in all a really decent device for that price.
Regarding the RMN 2:
It's a real shame that I cant revive it...so dead...yet so beautiful
I disassembled it and tried the test point method as a last resort, but I can't identify the test points.
Anyone knows where they are?
I googled, but to no avail...
Thanks everyone!
Figured it would make sense to have a backup after nearly washing my Samsung galaxy lol.
There a lot of cheap smart phones out now from blu..sky ..figo..iview and so on but there seems to almost nothing in the way of support so your stuck on roms dating back to kitkat.
Any ideas?
Ohh must be able to work with wind in good old Canada.
You would probably be better served getting a slightly used older phone, like the Nexus 5 or 6 or OnePlus One. They can be found at reasonable prices online and support your network. New budget phones just don't attract interest from developers, generally, so have less options for rooting and customizing.
Less Expansive (OK, CHEAP) Phones
Personally, I've had what some folks would call a decent "experience" with FIGO phones. Very basic Android 5.1 configurations. Minimal bloatware. A service operation with people who actually respond to requests with useful answers.
I got tired of BLU products sending all my confidential data to China while insisting nothing was wrong with their factory build. Footnote - an eventual OTA update from BLU, presumably to address the malware issue they never admitted to but see recent reports about it in such 'questionable rumor mills' as Consumer Reports, bricked it for me, anyway. So I would avoid BLU like the plague. They seem to have some SERIOUS lack of service & support issues. At least that has been MY experience with BLU.
Currently using the better FIGO phone (the Atrium, at about 100 bucks). Have a smaller FIGO phone (the Virtue 2, at 50 bucks or so) as a backup and a place to experiment. One of these days I will learn enough to figure out how to get TWRP to work on it - an MTK 6580 chipset - and eventually CM 12. Can't afford to experiment with a phone you actually need, in my book. Now, these phones are by no means flagship killers, but the better one is a reliable basic device and the lesser of the two is a functional Android device that is inexpensive enough to be a throw away, or at least a reason not to cry if I manage to turn it into a complete paperweight. It has actually proven remarkably resistant to my lack of skills and has been recovered from what I would have thought of as certain doom more than a few times
If you going for really cheap I bought a nexus 4 for 50 bucks on eBay a few days ago also a I phone 4s was 60$ plus delivery to where I was at on Facebook marketplace a month ago so 50 usable phones are out there you just got to look hard

Hello to everyone... I had a very bad case of "unluckiness" recently. I bouth a Lemax2 from Banggood. Received it defective (the earpiece was defective), i sent it back to Banggood. I was in constant contant with the banggood service team, where they repeteadly told me that when they receive it back and see that it is defective they will send immediately a replacement Lemax2 phone and also refund the postage fees of the returned phone.
That was till yesterday. TOday i received an email saying that it is no longer in stock, so they can;t send a replacement. Ofcourse i went kinda frenzy, because they knew i wanted a replacement and they COULD have hold onto one for me (i know they're dropshippers and they don;t actually have stock themselves, but since they knew our dealing, they could have told their seller to hold one for them...)
ANYHOW they agree ofcourse to a full refund, but the thing is i don;t want a refund but a Lemax2.
I went to search for another shop to buy it from (i need it to be sent via triangle shipping to skip the customs of my country, as it did with banggood) but wherever i searched (except aliexpress they dont support the shipping method i require), theres NOWHERE to be found. Some sites report it to be SOON stocked again, others that it is discontinued.
The funny thing is i already bought screen tempered glass protectors and cases, which i already received...
My question is finally if anyone knows and has some info about it, is it really discontinued? Did they pull it from the market so they can promote the new x920 and x850 leecos? Or is it something that happedned before and it went to stock again?
The device was initially released in May of 2016. So, yeah... it's most likely discontinued by now, and given LeEco's finiancial status at moment, even if it weren't they may not even have the resources (i.e money) to manufacture them...

Thanks for the answer, yes i know the history of the brand etc, just seemed weird.
I spoke with a seller in aliexpress few minutes ago, it's well stocked for them (and they're also dropshippers)...Weird stuff...

Ofc discontinued as well as entire company does not exists anymore. There won't be any new LeEco phones, company is dead already

I think you're wrong. A lot of guessing going on here. Ofc it's not dead. They just released 2 more phones X850 and X920. An there's a 18:9 sr phone coming as well with flagship tech on it.
My question was if someone has actually some info that he/she may have stumbled upon, cause it looks to me their pulling the Lemax2 so they can push the forementioned phones...

Heyyo, x850 and x920 tbh aren't official releases. From what I see they are engineering samples much like they did with the LeEco LeMaxPro (x910) hence it isn't promoted on their website anywhere.
There's also no official source code release for x850 and x920 so unfortunately software development of custom ROMs is limited in that regard...
I'd recommend looking into Le Pro3 as they're also a darn good option. Otherwise? Xiaomi devices have insanely good software development community so they're always a healthy option as long as you avoid MediaTek SoC devices.
Le Pro3 AI is like a Le Max 2 but FHD screen and camera isn't as good for taking photos as Le Max 2.

Thanks for the reply man, appreciate it, thought the funny thing is, LePro 3 is ALSO out of stock. (!!!) While i can find both Lemax2 and Lepro3 in Aliexpress , i can't get them from there cause of custom importing issues (they want full price of the phone, as tax )
Lepro3 AI is MTK and as a previous user of MTKs' i got kinda sick of them... The ROM love i saw on Lemax2 along with the very good specs and awesome price, made me fall in love with it.
Banggood and gearbest out of stock too...
Sorry for mentioning shops, i hope i'm not breaking any rules by doing so, it's just only these shops offer the shipping method preferable.
My luck i guess!

Heyyo, whoops! I meant Le Pro3 elite haha my bad yeah avoid AI edition it is poop MediaTek. :silly:
Hmm if that's the case where you need to buy within the country? Sorry man I'm unsure what to tell you then... If no one will stock it anytime soon? You might be better off looking at a different device.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 does look really good and reviews good and since it's a Xiaomi device with Qualcomm Snapdragon? It'll get really good community software development support. It might only have 3GB of RAM but that's not so bad of a loss as I've never felt my Le Max 2 really benefitted from 4GB of RAM over a 3GB phone but maybe that's just me...
But I see what you mean, those vendors do show LeEco devices as preorder so maybe they are eventually going to restock?
I would also suggest considering Xiaomi. Got my mother a Redmi 4A, it was only $135 cad at the time.... and I'll be honest, the level of quality for the price is actually very surprising. They're certainly worth looking at.
thank you both for your time guys. I acknowledge Xiaomi too, not too fond of their design, but while never had one myself, i can see they're pretty solid devices.
I will be waiting for a bit to see what's going on with Leeco Max2 or Pro3, cause they're at an awesome price for their specs, and they do have awesome specs and rom support. Just hit me a bit weird that they both went out of stock to most if not all known chinese eshops, while Aliexpress sellers still sell them. Either we can expect a move from leeco (surprising knowing the state of the company atm, but still..) or there is no stock left...
Heyyo, update! Good guys on Telegram LeEco channels told me this
Anurag Dhiman:
I bought it for snapdeal website but there is out of stock now.but in delhi some guys have stock and they sold at olx.so try to find in olx
He got an x821 last month for dirt cheap from Snapdeal but yeah might not get lucky meow but might as well check both out eh?
Same nice guy from Telegram sent me this... Good luck!
not sold out
hey banggood has them still on sale, it seems that every couple of days they get more and sell them for a good price (promotion sale for 159 us dollars). The company might not be doing so good but in china they are a very solid company doing many other things so going out of business in unlikely IMHO. (add to the fact that a communist country too)
As for another phone the lepro 3 is more expensive but the le 2 is around 100 dollars and a lower processor (equal to the xiaomi that was mentioned before) or the s3 both have snapdragons but with lower specs in general but seem like the idea in terms of quality.
Aliexpress have them cheaper. Check Kimovil for cheapest prices...

Tons of new LeMax 2 on Aliexpress in stock. There is no problem to buy it, still.
But yes, it's discontinued. If not, show me where manufacturer mentioned this phone on his website. Please give me a link.
Also please prove LE still manufactures any phones, please give me a link to their homepage.
I bought Le Max 2 (4/32) from banggoog. But I believe the phone that they sent me has some sort of hardware problem. I don't mention that fingerprint is terrible, because I guess fingerprint is a common problem with Le Max 2. But no matter what ROM I installed, wifi stops working after some time (about 500 MB or 1 GB transferred with wifi). I checked if there are any bandwidth restriction from ROM, but there is not any. After that threshold wifi starts to drop the download processes. I tried with 26S Chinese stock ROM and Lineage 15.1 ROM. I started to believe this is a hardware issue.
I think banggood and maybe other sellers are selling returned for problems and refurbished Le Max 2 phones.

LE is a major chinese TV it has branched out to far (including selling in the us phones) and strapped of cash had a lot of financial problems. The head of the company was replaced and other companies bought some of the stock. The latest shareholder meetings seem to indicate that they are still looking for cash see https://www.reuters.com/article/med...-fund-leeco-subsidiaries-caixin-idUSL3N1RV4FQ however the mobile unit called lemobile has been silent dealing with its own lawsuits see https://www.reuters.com/article/bri...dict-regarding-contract-dispute-idUSL3N1QX42C. With all this thier is no notification of bankrupticy that is where my opnion comes from. They do have multipal patents in thier name see https://www.onscope.com/ipowner/en/...le-information-technology-beijing-co-ltd.html which are not sold off as of yet (thats what it seems anyway). IMHO LE over produced phones and that is what we have but I do not know if they are still producing the phones to stay alive. A we know it still is a good phone after2 years (ok no NFC and wireless charging). I did not verify what is being sold in stores in china but the website lemall.com only has TVs. Still no company backing anything.
I've bought 3 of the cheap refurbished E5823 phones from 3 different suppliers, 2 on Ebay and one on Aliexpress.
With all 3 phones everything is perfect, but NFC wil not work. I returned the first 2 phones for a full refund.
I tried everything, I assumed that if I flashed the phones back to an early stock version of the OS and then updated them sequentially to new versions the NFC update would take place and with new firmware NFC would start working.
But I've had no luck, as all the phones behave the same way it makes me wonder if they might be using the board from a Docomo version that did not have NFC on the board, but used an NFC SIM.
However the device reports as an E5823.
You can get these phones for less than $100USD delivered now and it's a nice compact water resistant phone with a decent camera, if I could just get the NFC working it would be perfect.
When I try and turn the NFC on it just turns itself off.
When I install a new stock rom after it reboots it says NFC firmware updating, do not turn off your phone.
After a few minutes it says NFC firmware failed (-1)
I asked the latest seller of the phones in China and he said it is not possible to make NFC work, but he would not give me any details.
I have another NFC board here and even with the NFC antenna disconnected it will still allow NFC to be turned on, so It is not a missing antenna.
If anyone has any ideas, I would love to hear them.
I'm running Lineageos 14.1 and it is fast with great battery life.
Thanks
The same thing happens with 2 z3 compact (Docomo and Aries) y1 z5 compact bought in china. the z3c is LB and the z5c is UB. the first with stock rom or xperienz and the second with all the rom that exist for z5c. I could never use nfc with any of them. on the other hand, mirrorlink works for me in z3c and not in z5c. Another curiosity is the use of the band 20 800mhz that is blocked in the z5c no matter the rom that o.baseband installed. I have tried programs such as dfs tools qualcomm and they are useless with these mobile phones from China.

Would you chaps be good enough to link to either the eBay auction or the eBay seller that you bought these from, so that others can avoid the same mistake? I'm sure there is more than one seller that is distributing these phones, so buyers may not be safe anyway, but at least we can steer people away from known-bad auctions.
Thanks!!

Please did you solve this issue? As I have the same issue but I bought the same model E5823 new from china by ebay.? Please help.
Many Z5 compact models from Ebay, od Ali are refubrished SO-02H japanese models, Rooted, opened Bootloader, and Hardly "Cracked" firmware as E5823. If you open them, you will find differences between official boards EU-USA and these Asian market.... there is not NFC antenna and there are different contacts on GSM/LTE antenas. Different main antenna. Also, construction quality is really BAD. There is not original Sony Aluminium isolation behind LCD, but poor something.... what moves!, so if phone fall down, it will always crash screen from inside! Do not buy These refubrished low quality sh!ts. And some of them have very used batteries also... But exterior looks nice Interior is really BAD. If it falls, total destruction.... so you can look inside and check if I´m right...
I am... I Have had one of these 4 parts. difference is also IMEI these refubrishers have 35969806... This is Japanese IMEI. And also screen will want to pop-off... upper left and right corner - in Pakistan they don´t have real glue, but some fake glue , so proximity will not work after few days. Not water resistant. LCDs are cheap fakes, not originals- bad color- on sun you see absolutely nothing.... and so on....
But.... they are selling very well That´s it.... loooks like a new.... poor quality shadow market.
this one is just perfect
