I've been working at getting the voicemail for my first Android device, the SGH-i777, switched to GVoice for a bit now and I can't seem to get it working.
During the setup process [account selection, etc.] it goes to setup the voicemail and I get this error that reads:
"Error
Forwarding number changed failed"
So I found another route via the web interface with the string of numbers that reads: *004*googlenumber#.
Upon entering that in the dialer, I get:
"Call forwarding
Connection problem or invalid
MMI code
conditionally for All Basic Services"
Then I found a lead, on disabling all the settings under "Settings -> Call -> Call forwarding -> Voice Call". That gives me two errors:
"Unable to deactivate call diverting for unanswered calls. Unsupported by operator"
&
"Unexpected response from network."
Online, the web interface does show:
"Deactivate Google voicemail on this phone"
This is occurs when the device is stock and rooted, and running a new ROM. I've also tried deleting and re-adding my phone's number to my list of phones and reinstalling the GVoice app. [NOTE: It's stock and rooted right now though]
Ideas?
Check if the call can go into the voicemail message system first. If not, I will call ATT to reset the condition forwarding.
I do have a real AT&T voicemail setup and I can call it and leave a message [from another phone of course].
As for the condition forwarding, where should I take that? Tech Support via customer care? I did have to get on with tech support after they didn't switch my voicemail over from the iPhone's to a "standard" voicemail service.

Squid,
I am trying to help you here but I may have misunderstood some things that you said. Anyways, I had gVoice forwarding my voice mail just fine - actually, against my will because I wanted to stay with ATT voice and only use gVoice for text messages. Thus, if you go into settings>call>call forwarding - what does it say there? List your google number or does it list your ATT voice number? In my case it listed my google voice phone number and not my carrier number. I changed that back to my carrier, but maybe you go the opposite route. Sorry if I missed your point.

When I go "Settings -> Call -> Call Forwarding" there's another option in there with "Voice Call". There's then 4 lines, "Always Forward", "Forward When Busy", "Forward When Unanswered", "Forward When Unreachable". All of those [EXCEPT "Always Forward"] have text that reads "Forwarding to [presumably the AT&T voicemail number]".
I couldn't disable it manually, but I see where your going with it. Sadly, I cannot change any of the settings in there. Refer to the OP when I mention the lead on "disabling" the settings.

ok. Have you tried to uninstall gvoice, reboot, and re-install? Probably did, just saying.

Yes I have. I've tried a bunch of things.
But amazingly, I get to close this thread now! I called up AT&T and asked about conditional call forwarding and the guy walked me through a bunch of stuff. What ended up being the issue was the number set for the 'conditionals' in call forwarding and the "carrier number" for the voicemail [just below the radio button to select Google Voice] were different by one digit. Changing the carrier number to match the conditionals let the whole operation happen smoothly.
So, thanks to the two of you who responded!

Glad it works for you! Just for my information, the "conditional" is in which menu - call forwarding? I can't find a "conditional" option. I am sure this will come up again sometimes, so I try to fully grasp it. Thanks man!
I don't understand. I've had this same problem since I got my new phone, the SGH-i727 Skyrocket. My number in the carrier setting exactly matches the number for the "conditionals"... So what gives? I'm rooted and running a custom ROM, but the issue was present before I ever rooted, when I was stock.
I had some issues setting mine up, I am also rooted. Have you tried looking at voice.google.com -> Settings -> Phones -> Mobile and seeing if its checked or even there?
Also I reinstalled all the google apps so that might have also helped.
I had a similar problem. I'm guessing you have the Google voice app installed? I would try to reset to defaults the dialer info.
Try this
1. Remove Google app.
2. Clear dialer and dialer storage cache
3. When you go to dialer, the settings should be reset. Configure it as if you have no Google voice.
4. Install Google voice, but make sure you have both WiFi internet and cell phone reception.
5. Hopefully it succeeded, regardless go to the dialer --> Preference --> voice-mail handler for me its either Google voice, or voice mail, or none(dial voice number)
Like wise if you have the number is correct on the Google voice website and you have configured the phone with the app try entering this code. Remember the number is your Google voice mail.
Remove the dashes, and the X's correspond to the Google number, these are to be entered on the standard dialer. I do recommend this be your last step

not trying to revive a dead thread, but I was going at this all night and nothing worked, (new gs3 ATT)
have used gv for everything for a long time now and nothing has worked with this phone.
Went through and tried all the stuff above, and finally I tried putting in the mmi code in the dialer as *004*(area code and number)# and it went like normal, like a regular nexus phone.
This is without the "1" before the are code.
It went through fine and changed all the forwarding numbers in the forwarding menu, and set GV as voicemail.
The reason is that inside the phone- settings- voicemail-setup, you get what looks like a GB screen with your google voice number without the +1 infront of it, and no way to change it I don't think.
this is what the guy above was taking about I think with the att person on the phone. I hope this helps someone, I could have used it yesterday

Not sure if you're trying to be a smartass or not, but....either way this is the i777 forum. Post in the forum relative to your device.
why are you guys so touchy about specific forums? Looking for help from wherever it comes from is a good thing.
That little clue about numbers matching would have helped me yesterday, regardless of what phone I was using. ANd it will help someone in the future.
If it was an htc forum I might have said something different, but I still would have said something.
Telling someone to gtf out of your forum for no good reason is just silly.
Everyone is here to help. That's all there is. If no one needed help, there wouldn't be an XDA.
but ya, I'll stay out of your guy's forum. not that I post alot or anything.
Don't choke on your lollypop
And here I thought I was being nice. I don't remember telling anyone to gtfo....I simply said to post in your phones forum. Well good luck. Happy flashing.
All I said was that this isn't the S3 section. Was that so wrong? Many things are device dependent. So many things can't be given support for unless you have our device.

I didnt know if I got a bad phone with a bad flast or how many other people are having problems. It seems that the preorders were a bad batch for the most part. Some arrived DOA, battery covers broke, bricked on arrival. Glad to know I'm not the only one with this issue.ANYONE having problems with quadrand FC'ing all the time?
I had a similar issue, but I was able to get around it.
Try going into Google Voice on the web and hit the "activate voicemail" link. It'll give you a number/code to dial in the dialer on your phone. After I did that, GV on the phone was able to set up voicemail correctly, iirc.

Thanks that worked.
Still doesn't work for me. Tried uninstalling and re-installing GV and also using the deactivate/activate link on the GV website and I'm still getting the error. This is frustrating.
Just go in and manually change it yourself in the phone settings, under the forwarding options. There are 4 options, leave the first one disabled (forward all calls). For the other 3, change them all to your Google voice number (for ex., 1-xxx-xxx-xxxx) and you will be good.

I'm almost positive it is AT&T wanting you to use their (nonexistant) Visual Voicemail app. My Skyrocket did the same exact thing. International GSII on ICS even worked fine.
I had the same issue. Make sure it says ATT in carrier when you log into google voice. If it doesn't redetect it. Mine still showed Sprint for 48 hours before it detected I was actually on ATT.
Also entered the codes as mentioned on this site:
http://kalsey.com/2010/10/using_google_voice_as_your_voicemail_on_att/
The important part to save you a click through:
"Second, open up your phone’s dialer and dial the following, replacing 1234567890 with your new Google Voice phone number…
*61*1234567890# (then hit send)
*62*1234567890# (then hit send)
*67*1234567890# (then hit send)
You should see a message appear on your phone after each time you press send. This will set up your AT&T account to take all calls when the phone is busy, when you decline a call, or when your phone is turned off or out of range and forward the call to your Google Voice number."
After doing the above I was able to change Carrier in settings to Google Voice without any problem.

You guys are simply amazing. Had this problem which I suspect is because of the SIM change. I had no problems switching from my Captivate to Atrix.
Hey all,
Did some searching for this issue and didn't come up with much. Basically, running a stock Rezound using the latest OTA update. Google Voice works fine for receiving and sending calls. However, I can only call out using Google Voice when I tap the person I want to call in my contact list. Is there some way for Google Voice to work with unknown numbers (i.e. just dialing a number the old school way)? It always uses my VZW number if I do this.
I have my Google Voice calling option set to "use for all calls" so I'm wondering what's going on. I am dialing the full number including an area code.
Thanks.
Thats the way I always use it. I select "use with all calls" and anytime I dial a number from the regular dialer... hell, any time I tap on any phone number in the browser... it just dials using Google Voice the way you'd expect it would.

Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling - no dice. Dialer still causes VZW number to make the call instead of my GV number.
I'm using HTC Sense 3.5 if that helps any...? I haven't heard of anyone with this problem.
I have mine set to "ask me every time". Even for unsaved numbers, it'll prompt me with a box so I can select dial with / without Google Voice. Try setting it this way, and then attempt to call an unknown, see if it'll prompt you. That way you can narrow down whether it's your phone or the Google Voice app.

Yeah, I just tried doing the "ask me every time" option and dialed my house. Didn't give me any sort of message box asking me if I wanted to use GV or not and simply called using my VZW number.
I just got the phone two days ago and I've noticed some weird black artifacts (!) showing up during typical usage sometimes. Maybe I should just exchange it at this point?
Definitely do so if you are within your 14 days. That way you won't have to claim a warranty exchange for a refurb later on.

However...still have this same Google Voice issue. Very frustrating. Maybe it's because I skipped the voicemail setup?

You're obviously doing something wrong with the initial setup... That or you have it Google Voice not configured with your cell phone number correctly...
Works okay for me. On ice cream sandwich.
Google Voice not working when configured for ALL calls
I am running:
GV App build number 0.4.2.54
Galaxy Tab GT-P6200L with Android v4.0.4
When I set GV to ask before every call, it does, and my calls work just fine.
When I set GV to make all calls, it doesn't make calls, at all.
Since I went to the expense of porting my number to GV, it would be nice to use GV for my calls. I want to keep my cell number private, and GV should allow me to do this by showing my GV number to people when I call them.
Although I can do what I want with the extra screen press (when asked if I want to use GV), this is not how the app is supposed to work.
Is there a fix for this that anyone is aware of?
Thank you.
wondering if someone could please check as I am not getting texts and when someone calls me it goes to voicemail and I don't get the message.
Are you using Google Voice separate from your actual Sprint number or did you have your Sprint number made into your Google Voice number (though using the sprint integration, not actually porting your number to GV)?
If it's the latter, here's what happened to me. I had been using Google Voice & Sprint integration on my EVO 4G. Immediately after activating my SG3 last night everything was still working, but when I got up this morning I logged into the Google Voice web interface and realized something had been borked. I didn't have a phone number associated with my Voice account at all, and calling my cell number from my office phone sent me to Sprint voicemail rather than GV voicemail.
There was also no Phones tab under GV settings (and Settings was missing a good number of the tabs that are usually there) since sometime after the activation process it disabled the GV integration and my GV account no longer had a number at all.
No worries, I just clicked the "Get A Google Voice Number" (or however it was worded) in the left column on the web interface and went through the process again. I said I had an existing number, and it asked me to type it in to get my options. It recognized it as a Sprint number and asked how I wanted to integrate it. After that everything set up like it was before and I didn't even have to re-record my GV voicemail message since it was still there.
Hope this helps.
Thanks so much for your response! I did not integrate the numbers. Every thing looks perfect on the website. I can even make calls with Google voice. Its just when people call me it goes right to voice mail and i cant get the message if they leave a voice mail. So frustrating! Anyone else.
I did the integration method... but when I got to the screen after the choice of using a google voice number or the sprint number, the button was disabled. I rebooted my phone and everything worked fine. I get phone calls on my sprint phone from my google number, my phone also displays on their caller ID as my google number. Hell, I can even get MMS now to my google number (forwarded to my phone's messages) that I didnt think I could before.
something to check
i just had a similar problem. i was screwing with groove-ip and i stopped receiving calls.
go to google voice on your pc
go to settings
it should show you the "phones" tab, if not, get there
make sure you don't have any other phones checked for "forward calls"
i had "google chat" checked and it screwed me up
hope this helps

This worked! I was constantly getting a "Forwarding number change failed" on my AT&T SIII when selecting Google Voice for my voicemail service, but I just followed the steps under Settings > Phones > Deactivate Google voicemail on this phone and then Activate Google voicemail on this phone - once you do that, the forwarded numbers under Call Forwarding on the phone list my Google Voice number like they should
Here's my only issue with this though.... if you could change the Voicemail service from My Carrier to Google Voice like normal, the next setting below it gives you options for Voicemail settings for Google Voice - that lists the number to dial, which is obviously your GV number and not the carrier specified one.... On the dialer, if you press the Voicemail icon without having GV enabled as the correct service, it dials the carrier specified one instead! I'm sure that when a voicemail comes in and pops up on the notification bar, I'm just going to click on that and read / listen to it there, but not having the option of dialing it straight away from the dialer is a little half-assed....
I found this for a solution on an S2 for AT&T, might give that a try and see if they can figure it out for me

You're right, I can change the number listed manually, but it still says "My Carrier" and not "Google Voice" on the voicemail service even though the number listed is now my GV number.... I got with tech support at AT&T and they called Samsung to assist with this, but I don't know why they did, it's an issue with AT&T and most likely Visual Voicemail preventing me from being able to change the voicemail service from "My Carrier" to "Google Voice" and Samsung couldn't do anything to fix it
I was only able to switch my VoiceMail provider from AT&T to GoogleVoice by using the dialcode listed @ voice.google.com (*004*<insertyourGVnumberhere>#), and it works, even though the Dialer settings still shows "My carrier" instead of "Google Voice" as the provider, and attempting to change it in the dialer still says "Forwarding number change failed".
Anyway, my problem now is that I can't for the life of me figure out where to change the timeout before it forwards to VoiceMail. I test-called from another phone and it rings for at least 60 seconds(!) before forwarding to GoogleVoice, instead of the 15 or so it used to be.
Where do you change this, or can you

Try this go to settings in the phone app and put this in for the voicemail number +19168062996. Otherwise call customer care. It works fine on mine. I side loaded the visual voicemail apk and its working good so you can go that route too but everything has to be provisioned right.
