S9 Recovery - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Questions & Answers

Can someone tell me what this is ? Found it on a warranty replacement phone T-Mobile sent me, 2 months ago, which was obviously a used phone. And how did it get past they're quality control. Supposedly certified. Hate that send you a used phone for warranty or insurance claims.
This, I thought, was a stock Samsung S9 Snapdragon.
Is there root or a hack I don't know about ? What is this ?
This phone is going back to TMO after we found this trying to fix the earpiece speaker. Attempting to get into recovery, which is a no go. Can't get in at all.
Completely free, no charge replacement. Probably going to get another used phone. Oh well, at least they're replacing it.

Tmobile's warranty gives you a "like new" or "reconditioned" phone of the same kind/type. (If none are available they might send you a new one instead) that is certified to work. In other words whomever handled the warranty replacement (assurian or Tmobile) had someone go through and check the phone out, and they certified that it works...
So you can end up with a gently used phone they checked over and made sure works as the warranty exchange.

In the pix I am not sure what your seeing that is unusual.
The images are of the phone in download mode for uploading firmware to the phone. Download mode is not the recovery menu/mode
Top image shows the standard menu and warning about flashing firmware to the phone.
Bottom image is where the phone is waiting for the transfer to start. In the bottom image FRP lock is enabled which means someone had a Google account on that phone but did not factory reset it (factory data reset removes the FRP lock). Also Knox status is 0x0 which means it hasn't been tripped at all. I can't read the purple text at the top, it's too blurry for me to make out
Also for the G965U and G965U1 there is no root at all.

Thanks for the reply. I knew I wasn't in recovery. I've never been in download mode. Wasn't sure. What would you download on a locked phone. ?. Guess I did get a used phone. I described the screen in detail to TMO tech support. Why wouldn't they know "download mode" ?
This is one of the few phones I haven't touched. Still have a flashed TMO Dash, Wing, S2, Stylo, & a couple jailbroke iPhones.
Wiish there was root for the snapdragon.
Why couldn't I get into recovery. ? It always took me to download mode. Why?

Also does FRP lock prevent anything to the next owner of the phone ?
Nevermind. Just Googled it. Thx.

Tbh I have no idea why the rep you spoke too didn't know what download mode is. It may have slipped there mind or they didn't know, given how many people the deal with as well as all the different types of phones.
It also may depend on the level of tech support you reached. The tech support you reached may not necessarily specialize in the phone hardware as much as they are in the tmobile network.
As for why you could not access recovery mode it is because you pressed a wrong button.
Recovery mode is accessed by holding power button, Bixby button and volume up when the phone is off.
Download mode is accessed when you hold volume down, Bixby button and the power button when the phone is off.

Thanks for the info. TMO tech evidently didn't know either.
Appreciate the help.

[Q] T-mobile defective phone trade in help????

I was wondering if t-mobile offers some kind of service for people like me who have t-mobile phones that weren't necessarily purchased by the person bringing it in or bought and activated with them...like if I could pay some sort of extra fee for them to accept my defective "hardware locked" phone for a replacement? Lmk, thanks!
Oh and just to make sure whoever's reading this post understands my predicament; I bought a vibrant off someone from CL, rooted and flashed the robotix1.1w/oc rom, decided I didn't like it so I nandroid restored to a previous stock/root backup and while it was rebooting or doing the backup (I can't remember) the phone just hangs on the vibrant/samsung screen and won't turn off unless I pull the battery. Any help would be appreciated, thanks again!

Nope. I can't get into downloader or recovery on it. I've tried literally every method, I've even followed yours to a T in the other couple "hardware locked" vibrant threads but to no avail.
I just noticed that when I plug my phone into a computer, both the internal memory drive and the sd card pop up as drives but both are labeled unknown and seem to be corrupted....

That's because you're not able to push the "Mount USB" button.
It doesn't hurt to ask T-Mobile to replace it. It helps if you're paying for the $6/month warranty.
Yeah, that's what I thought. Damn well I don't think I have that warranty option added on my plan...I hope they replace it.
Should I try to sell it, turn it in, or should I just wait, hold on to it and hope someone figures out some sort or fix?
Try and get it replaced before worrying about it.
I've heard plenty of stories about people getting their phones serviced by the carrier even though they were bought on eBay or whatever.

Thanks for the flame..but did you even read my entire OP? I clearly stated I bought the phone off someone from CL and the reason for my post in the first place was to find out if T-mobile would allow me to swap phones if I paid an extra servicing fee or something.
Of course I wouldn't expect to walk into the store, demand a new phone because mine doesn't work and then get one. I just don't have the extra couple hundred dollars to "buy another one and leave it alone" sorry I'm not rich like you.
If you're not gunna help me out, why don't you just NOT REPLY and leave ME alone.
tmobile exchanged a vibrant i bought off cl, i told them that the youtube app was causing the phone to soft reset everytime I accessed the app. Do not, I repeat, Do not tell tmo that you got the phone off cl. tmo sent me a brand new phone two days later. The only concern i have is the fact that your phone had a custom rom on it, if tmo determines that you installed a custom os which voids your warranty, they will charge you $400 for the replacement phone they sent you.
hope this helps

need advice: bricked Vibrant

I clearly have a hardware locked vibrant. nothing i can do will get it into download mode.
It is currently stuck at the Phone ! Computer screen.
My question is, i am an Att customer, not tmobile. How do i go about getting my phone replaced. I tried contacting the person i bought it from, and he is not responding (a craigslist ad). I went to the local tmobile store and I was told there is nothing they can do. Even thought it shows in the system it was purchased 3 days ago.
Pm me
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Try this:
Take battery out
Put battery back in
DO NOT TURN ON PHONE!
Plug in USB
Wait for the green battery screen
Hold vol+ and vol- at the same time
Hold power
When the battery screen goes black, let go power ONLY.
I had a HW locked phone and this method allowed me to get into DL mode--still couldn't get into recovery, but at least I could use ODIN. Was a null point as the phone is bricked and a new one is on its way...
I will have a RIFF jtag box this Friday. If you can't get it fixed, let me know. I may able to fix yours.
Just an update. Might help others. My phone was hardware locked. I tried all (15) methods to get into download mode. No go. so I made a post on cs paid someone 10 bucks to go in and get it replaced. seriously. no questions asked.
kinda makes you wonder about tmobile...
Well:
It is their branded phone...they sell many of them...not too many people frequent the same same store over and over. It is easy to dupe retailers when "customer service" is the forefront and even if you suspect foul-play, as an employee you are held by protocol.
Capitalism at its finest. I will not say anything about your CS post and method--you already know...and that is how consumers will respond to what they want.

bricked after ATT update

I was out of town and ignoring the notification to install an att update. I was in and out of wifi at my hotel and I think it downloaded about 9% of the official update. When I got home and under reliable wifi I decided to do the update. When I came back to the phone about 10 min later i had a blue screen with the message System software not authorized by AT&T has been found on your phone please take to nearest AT&T store. I called att they conference called with Samsung and sent me to ubreakifix to look at it. They were able to get in download mode and the knox wasn't tripped but it only said Official Samsung in one of the 2 places the tech said it should (i think the binary didn't say official Samsung but I only saw it briefly). I have only had this phone for 2 months. It is NOT rooted. It wouldn't go into recovery Any thoughts?

Man, talk about a bad situation. I would try itekimei .com. Buy the unlocked package for $30. He will be able to flash your factory firmware back to the way it was. Granted you can get into recovery and download modes.
I wouldn't turn to At&T for that type of help. Carriers are usually pretty stupid when it comes to stuff like this. At least with my experience with t-mobile for 17 years.
* I should add I recently used itekimei .com for two galaxy s9+'s with success for CDMA carriers, I.E. verizon. But part of that process is flashing back your original firmware, which should be no problem for AT&T and t-mobile. They have access to the actual Samsung tools, they can do just about anything when it comes to flashing firmware. Which in your case, sounds like your best alternative.
I took it to the ubreakifix (authorized Samsung repair) They said they were going to call Samsung, if they gave them the go ahead it will be fixed under warranty, which it should in the first place, or they'd charge me $40 to flash back to factory.

And Itekimei will do it for $30, plus it will be carrier unlocked if you ever needed that. But he does the same process in the end, flashes back your factory firmware. So six one, half a dozen another. But with samsung, I don't think they will leave you carrier unlocked after they reflash your firmware.
But your right, it should be fixed under warranty. If that's an option for you that you want to take, then take it. I don't know how long they will take, the guy at itek takes about an hour to do the process. They have access to the same tools samsung does to flash phones, at least they claimed to me.
Thanks for the info, that will definitely be plan B.

No problem, but yeah that sounds like your solution anyways, is to have someone flash back your firmware. That will solve your problem.
ubreakifix couldn't fix it, they called samsung and they claim I rooted it. I DID NOT ROOT. used the help of iTekIMEI and he tried to flash stock firmware, he was unable to get it going too. Called Samsung directly they want me to send it in for analysis, sounds like they don't believe me either about not rooting.

T-Mobile Galaxy Tab S6

Does anyone here know if the T-Mobile variant has a locked bootloader? And if so, is there any way to unlock it?
I'm wondering the same thing...I'll be going to look at it later today. Also I noticed the wifi model has the phone dialer installed so I'm wondering if the LTE T-Mobile model has phone function with the right sim installed?
I went to the T-Mobile store to look at the tab...They had no idea if the bootloader is locked or not. I'm sure it probably is but haven't seen anything about whether it can be unlocked yet. They also told me that the phone and SMS/MMS might work for a few days until the system detects it is a tablet, then those functions will be disabled. Make no sense to me why we can't have those functions on a tablet here in the US...And why even put the software on the tab if it can't be used? I told them to keep it and I'll get the WiFi tablet and just use the hotspot on my phone when I'm out and about. At least I'll get quicker updates (Maybe because Samsung) and I won't have the tons of their bloatware on the thing.
Any feedback?

If you can go into store and view the tablet go into settings and enable developer options by tapping on the build. Then go into developer options and see if there is a switch to unlock the boot loader. I just bought the wifi model from Best Buy and the boot loader can be unlocked. I have already installed TWRP and Magisk. I think maybe the LTE version may require a 7 day wait not sure.

from almost a year back-wondering was your wifi device branded like Tmobile or Verizon? sad to see no continuity in the thread-was hoping for someone to check out the lte device in Tmobile to see if it could be unlocked or if the option was there-not many resources on internet. Does Tmobile even carry this thing anymore? thanks

Unfortunately, I think I'm being held back by the whole 7-day oem-unlock hide thing. And all the ways around it have apparently been patched by samsung. So this time next week, I'll know for sure. As of right now, I believe it can be unlocked, but I don't know for sure.

thank you so much-well I will be receiving my device tomorrow. So let the race begin-ha ha kidding will see and compare. I did not know Samsung has this 7 day wait period (like Xiaomi has a 2 week period). Oh well, time will tell Thanks for keeping me posted and do let me know what you find. I did see a post somewhere on xda for the tab s6 where the poster said he could unlock the carrier device (think it was Tmobile) but he wanted to find out if he could root it. I will find the post (again it was an old one and of course, my response (recently) has not got any response. In fact, like many, he did not follow up with any posts thereafter (several months back).

Hello Arudis I got a used Tmobile variant. But I do not see any OEM unlock option in developer settings (a prerequisite before anything can be done for unlocking b/l). Which software version is yours having? (maybe it is different because you bought directly from Samsung but does not make sense if it is branded Tmobile). Could be that you have an older version of Android-appreciate if you could let me know which software version, CSC etc yours has. I might end up returning mine if there is no progress. Thanks.!
EDIT: Returned it. Great price and condition. Just too bad-did not want to take chances with it. Good luck-seems that you should be able to unlock it per that other post I sent.

Well. I'm struggling w/ it. CSC was TMB btw. This whole ordeal has been a mess of mistakes on my part. If i can't get this unlocked in the next day or 2 then i'll be returning it myself. I'd rather have a weaker tablet w/ root and a custom rom than a great tablet that i have to run stock.
Current software version is T867USQU3BTJ1 / T867UOYN3BTJ1 / T867USQU3BTJ1.
First thing I needed to know was whether or not I could unlock the tablet for other networks and in order to do that, I inserted a sim and logged into the tablet w/ my google account. I think this is where I made my first mistake as I have a sinking suspicion that inserting the sim somehow got rid of my oem unlock toggle. I know I had seen it before I started trying 2 unlock the sim because its always the first thing I do when I get a new device. But between the sim and the unlock process I ended up rebooting too many times and it auto-updated itself to the latest firmware. Since the latest firmware, I haven't seen that toggle at all. When I try to flash twrp w/ Odin, it fails.
@ this point I've decided that I will never buy another samsung device ever. I've had all manner of fun rooting every other device i've ever owned that wasn't a samsung device, however every samsung device has always been a supreme pain in the butt because I can't just do what i want w/ adb and fastboot.

I agree but this has more to do with (if not entirely) to U.S carriers playing games with dual devices for marketing-only here does this go on, where the carriers since time immemorial have blocked calls and texts on tablets (7 and above inches) giving some bs reasons (there was a time they had this tablet "plan" and phone "plans"-those have at least merged at least for Tmobile-otherwise their servers would detect a tablet and switch you automatically to a tablet plan for your 'convenience' and maybe even 'safety' lol)....so as long as they do this, Samsung (even Apple which does the same thing worldwide anyway) have tablets that do not have phone-like functions (Samsung has this call and text pairing with other Samsung phones a.k.a buy two of our devices please AND have two plans (so both Samsung and carriers win)...) on their U.S devices (Samsung at least to their credit have this :"unlocked" cellular variants in rest of the world, Apple does not even have that-yes, I know there is Google talk and all kinds of wifi-based workarounds but that is a different topic.
EDIT-if you compare the older devices like say tab S and tab s2 (the carrier variants and the international variants you will find out that even the speaker arrangements are different. I delved deep into this and found that even the boards were different-the lengths they went to do this to keep the versions distinct is amazing!) folks here on xda etc kept thinking for a while that they could simply flash the international ROMs (never mind the b/l block or hurdles) but the partitions were not even the same let alone the modems, and the actual hardware itself!
So blame the carriers-I do. So I never get these carrier devices (first time I tried my hand at it-no more)
Having to perform a soft boot tonight I noticed an "unlock bootloader command" in the softboot menu along with "cache clear" along with the always present "factory reset". Which I have to perform anyway because network mode locked to 3G only and no option to change it back so it has major conectivity issues. I'm thinking I may try the unlock bootloader command.
P.S. Mine is the tmo version

Out of curiosity which model number is your tmobile tab s6 lte? I have the verizon sm-t867v model which i re-flashed to the tmobile sm-t867u model using modified Odin 3.14. Unfortunately the bootloader remained locked down with no way to unlock it. Also what is this softboot menu your speaking of? I know samsung like the back of my hand and I've never heard of a softboot menu. Curious if this is something new im not aware of since I've been stuck with verizon brands the last 3 samsung devices I've owned...
Yes and Yes!
Can someone clarify something on the Tmobile Variant of the Tab S6?
This T867U definitely comes with the HARDWARE to text because i got it to work but it stopped.
So could this just be a matter of getting it 'Carrier Unlocked" so TMO cant decide what we do with our tab s6 since its payed for???

Question How to get phone to work on Mint? May be locked

The last time I messed with a phone ROM was back when I had an HTC Hero and something that had a physical keyboard so it's safe to say I've suffered cognitive decline since then. I have a Samsung A02S purchased directly from the Mint Mobile website but it will not work with a Mint SIM, tech support tells me I need to purchase a different phone and then send this one back for a refund but I have since been ghosted by Mint when I said they should make it right by simply sending me a working phone then I'll send this one back after I get a working phone.
The phone has a Boost mobile start up screen and Direct TV phone software but that's about as much as I know. I've debloated it using a process listed in this forum but still no dice, is there a certain way to get this phone to work? I'm short on time as it's for a kid whose birthday just snuck up on me (remember the cognitive decline?) How do I know if it's locked? Thanks
Also when I put *#7465625# into the dialer nothing happens

The carriers customer service sucks, I tried but they ghosted me after saying I had to order a new phone. I changed carriers for all 4 lines so it's irrelevant now.

Does Mint Mobile work on locked phones?
Mint requires its users to have an unlocked phone, so we definitely encourage you to bring your own phone when you're ready to switch (and after it's been unlocked), especially if you're still happy with your current device and it's compatible with our service.
The phone was purchased directly from Mint.
