Dead Z5 Compact only gets detected as HSUSB_Bulk - Xperia Z5 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My 2 year old Z5c (E5823, non rooted, stock latest Nougat ) died while updating some app, and doesn’t show any signs of life since then. Connecting the charger doesn’t turn on LED indicator either, but it does consume about 0.90A current I have tried all different reset procedures, and only the first time I tried the 2-minute reset did it vibrate once or twice. Since then it doesn’t ever vibrate either.
It gets detected as a "QHSUSB_Bulk" device in linux, but doesn't go to flashmode or fastboot by pressing volume keys. My first priority is to recover my data from it, which was encrypted. I can replace some components as well if they are the cause of error, but I can't find any schematics to diagnose it further. I know there are some tools for Oneplus which supposedly unbrick those phones from HSUSB hardbrick, but I can't similar process for Z5. I would really appreciate any help or tips.

[Q] Retrieve data off a dead nexus 4?

Hi,
Any help would be appreciated. My Wife's Nexus 4 has died, an unfortunately she switched off the auto sync of photos. There's a lot of memories stuck on here.
Thought it was the red light of death due to complete battery drain. I've tried hard reset via power + volume down, plugging in charger with while holding power + vol down, leaving it on charge (for several days), disconnect/reconnect battery internally, wireless charging (bought new to fix this), & new battery. None of these has worked.
I've read that the memory is integrated onto the board, so there's no (easy) way to reconnect it.
As none of these has worked. I guess that means I'm ****ed. :'(
My next option was to buy a second hand nexus fully charge the battery, and swap it over, but as the new battery didn't work, I'm not sure if I'll have any luck. I guess it could have been fully discharged when I got it.
Any ideas anyone? My last hope is that I can somehow get onto the card via the PC. When I connect it I get "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (COM3)" in the connected devices. However, I can't access it. Is there anyway to get onto it?
The phone is not rooted, and running vanilla android, 4.4.3 i think.

So you have what's considered a hard brick. Even if you could get it running again, there wouldn't be any hope of retrieving your info as the attempt would wipe the phone, if the EMMC is even still intact and not wiped out already.
You can try and see if anything here http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/general/wip-unbricking-nexus-4-using-qpst-t2208289 might help or see if you can get it into Download Mode and restore with the LG tool, but either way, if it does work, it will get it booting, but everything should be wiped clean including internal storage.

Thanks for the info. Useful to know that if I tried that I'd wipe the data!
Its still under google warranty, so I don't need to get it working. They're willing to send out a replacement, but it's the data that I need, or at least attempt to recover. Although I'll probably end up voiding the warranty (have done so already with the battery swap!)
Has anyone came across JTAG connection to read the phone? It requires getting to the hardware... Anyone know of anyone in the UK that can offer this service?
Thanks
Has anyone any experience with fonefunshop?
They will attempt the process of a JTAG connection to read the data for £25....

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Will Not Boot or Possibly Charge, Magnetic Charging Damage?

Greetings, XDA!
Before I begin, thank you in advance. I've scoured the forums many times and found answers from folks who clearly put time, energy and thought into it. You're great.
So for this particular issue, I did a search and found several other problems out there similar to what's happening with mine, but nothing identical. I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not. I'll get to it.
I was about to purchase a generic magnetic charger from a gentleman on CL and asked to test it first. Like a complete bonehead, I didn't mind the correct polarity and the phone immediately turned off upon contact with the magnetic charging port. After that, nothing. No power/volume button combinations, no response to the red reset button, no LED indicator when connected to the USB charger, nothing.
I brought the phone home, pried open the back and disconnected the battery. Once I reconnected the battery then connected the USB cable, I got the blinking red LED. At that point, a volume up/power press gave me 3 vibrations, which is as I understand it is a hard reset. A volume down/power press produced a solid red LED before the screen actually displayed the Xperia splash. After that, it turned back off and it's back to blinking LEDs.
As far as connecting to a PC goes, I did download PC Companion and it will recognize it, but it cannot update the software, as the device needs to stay on. Lastly, volume up and connecting to PC gives the solid blue LED. Volume down and connecting gives a quick red to green flash, then the LED turns off.
If there's any chance of a comeback with this device, I would be most grateful for any pointers, as I obviously love this device as much as you all do.
Happy sweet '16 and thanks again.
I'm really sorry for your machine, but it seems you'll need to contact the Sony technical support for repair.
Appreciate the response! The phone is out of warranty, so I'll be on my own for this one, as repairs are probably nearly the cost of buying a new phone. Fortunately, I have another Z Ultra that has a working motherboard and battery. Any idea which component would be the more likely to replace?
Have you tried to let it charge over night?
Yes I did, which yielded the same results. I fully grasp that it's very likely a hardware malfunction, given the fact that I reverse charged the phone by accident. I'm just not sure what the extent of the damage is.

If PC Companion recognizes the devices, it means that you should have both flashmode and fastboot available. The former is entered by holding VOL DOWN while you connect the Ultra to your computer with the USB cable, while the latter is used by pushing and holding VOL UP, which will make the LED on your device blue. This is used to boot/flash kernels etc.
Install Flashtool, then download a stock ROM (FTF) from the developer section and then try to flash it through Flashtool. PC Companion isn't really a good piece of software, and it won't allow you to do much unless your Ultra is 100% stock and working.
Also, install fastboot if you haven't yet (on your computer). You can use this handy little installer. Then press and hold VOL UP when you connect your device to the computer. Does the LED on your device get blue? If yes, be sure to tell us. Then it'll be a piece of cake to get it running again.

Help! Xperia C5 Ultra suddenly died. Tried Sony Software Repair, still doesn't work.

Hi, everybody. Need your help.
Yesterday, midday (when I expected the phone to ahve 70%+ charge), I suddenly noticed my Xperia C5 was off and would not turn on. (By the way, I recently installed Android 6.0 about a week ago).
I assumed something had caused the battery to drain completely, so I went home and plugged it in.
Red light activates, goes out, vibrates, comes back on, and stays on. After 20-30 minutes, still no activity (not even the charging percentage), so I research on this forum, and others, how to recover the device.
Two-button power-down did not work, so I downloaded the Xperia Companion and followed the instructions for Software Repair.
The PC / Companion doesn't recognize the phone at first, but following the software repair instructions, holding the volume button down before plugging the the USB into the computer, the green light (on the phone) came on, and the software repair process commenced (automatically).
First attempt at software repair failed, so I tried with a different USB cable. Second time was a success, and Xperia Companion was able to successfully reload software version 29.2.A.0.122-R3B.
However, I still cannot turn on the device. I have now left it charging for the past 2-3 hours, and it's still in the same state as before the software repair.
I noticed one odd quirk: If I press and hold the power and volume-up button, the red light goes of, there is a medium vibration, then three strong vibrations, before the red light goes on again. Then nothing else happens.
Any advice on how to rescue this C5?
Thanks!!
Sorry - I should have put this in the troubleshooting thread...
Just an additional interesting piece of information:
If Xperia Companion is NOT activated (i.e., not loaded), and I plug the device into my PC, Windows will alert me that a device is connected (as it usually does, with the chime), and the red light on the C5 turns GREEN.
Then in my Windows Device Manager, I can see the phone as an "Unspecified" device called S1 Service.
Clicking further into the propertise of this "S1 Service", I see that the Hardware is listed as a SOMC Flash Device, manufacturer is Sony Mobile Communications (etc.).
Every few seconds, I will hear the sound of a device being disconnected, the green light turns red, then there's a vibration, it gets reconected, and it goes green again. Repeat.
Xperia C5 Ultra E5553 Unbrick Succesfully :good:
Hi everyone, the only solution = Jtag repair , another solutions not successful! I repaired my device this solution and was successful. My device perfect working now :good:
some prob here
I have question, recently i flashed a rom on my c5 ultra dual, now it don't turn on anymore, only red light. I still have warranty on my phone
if i can't start the phone, is it possible that the manufacturer also can't start the phone, or will they find out that i broke the warranty rules?
In mid december 2016 my c5 ultra E5553 shut down randomly several times and then decided to wake up again 20 minutes later / one day later. It happened again in late january and took about 5 days before it decided to wake up (as I was preparing a hardware repair request!!). I am guessing a dodgy battery / connection as the 'one day later' restart happened as I was flexing the chassis to get the sim & sd card out - even though the phone had been on charge since the shutdown the battery percent had not changed / gone up.
The '5 days later' restart the battery was completely flat but the phone showed some signs of response when I plugged the charge cable in - after about 5 minutes of charge it then powered up when I hit the start button. Have not used it since as I was looking to flash up from the stock 5.1 ROM.
Amusingly I have landed on xda-dev looking for a flash tool as the xperiablog forum has the latest stock ROM (6.x) but advise that the flash tool they use bricks c4 & c5s...
so in summary, it randomly drops power and goes completely dark & unresponsive, but then decides it will let you wake it up sometime later...

S9+ bricked after reboot, only showing USB device briefly

My S9+ was acting quite weird this morning. Some apps continuously crashed or wouldn't start.
So i rebooted my phone (just from the normal power button menu) and then it went completely black.
It doesn't charge (or at least, it doesn't show it charging), it doesn't respond to forced resets and the screen is completely black.
The only thing it does, is briefly show a USB device when connecting it to a PC.
I've connected it to a Linux dev computer i have laying around and i see the following device connected briefly:
VID: 0x04e8
PID: 0x1234
It stays connecting longer if i hold the power button (about 8 seconds before power cycling).
The only things i could find online were some very old threads about Samsung's DNW mode, but nothing from this decade.
I think my Flash chip might be cooked, but i hope i'm wrong.
Anyone got any experience with this?
Update
I've sent it back to Samsung for repair under warranty.
The flash chip was gone. It started corrupting writes and finally it was so far gone that it couldn't load the bootloader.
They've replaced the main board and battery (probably because they tested it and saw it was going bad), that fixed it.

Old Z2 Tablet SGP512 Given All It's Got?

As the title suggests I have an old Z2 tablet that has been an absolute work horse for many years. I was using it one night and the Android OS prompted me that the device hadn't been rebooted in 28 days. So after I was done using it for the night I rebooted it. Only, it didn't reboot it just stayed off. I tinkered with it for a while and got it to show the Sony logo but then it just went dark again. The device is rooted and I have TWRP on it. So when I got it to turn on again I booted it into the TWRP recovery. I proceeded to clear the cache and also attempted to make a current backup. However, the backup would fail after running for several minutes. I decided to try backing up to an external OTG USB drive but the device needed to be rebooted to detect that the OTG USB drive was attached. So from TWRP I selected "reboot recovery".
Unfortunately that was the last time it worked. The screen will not come at all. When I hold volume+ and power it vibrates 3 times but still doesn't boot. I plugged it into the charger even though the battery charge last showed at 85%, but with the cable connected the charge light doesn't even come on. I tried plugging it into my computer but it doesn't detect the device has been connects and adb devices doesn't show anything in the list.
I read on a forum to try drying it out with a hair dryer and while the device hasn't ever gotten wet it has been humid here so I figured what the heck. Unfortunately that also hasn't resolved the issue.
Pretty much everything I've tried hasn't worked. Even the red reset button under the top panel just causes it to vibrate 3 times.
The device has been in this state for a week now. I was hoping maybe the battery would die and then I could recharge it, but since it still vibrates 3 times I'm guessing the battery still has a charge.
One thought I had is that maybe the internal storage is either dead or corrupted.
At this point I'm wondering if the device is a lost cause and I should just let it rest in peace or if there's any other solution. Even if there was a way to factory reset it from it's current state that would be better than having it be a paper weight.
Any suggestions beyond what I've already tried would be greatly appreciated. And, yes, I may look into seeing if I can get it serviced however there's definitely no warranty and I don't really want to poor money into it since it's probably time for an upgrade anyway.
Why is my phone vibrating 3 times and won't turn on? - Sony Xperia Z5
When I try to turn my phone on it just vibrates 3 times and does nothing after that, just wondering what the problem could be?? - Sony Xperia Z5
www.ifixit.com
The device vibrated 3 times, that's good, then it is off.
"Sony writes: This is how you force the device to turn off:
Press and hold the power button and the volume (+) button simultaneously until the device vibrates three times."
Did you try to put the device into flash mode after that? I think only a complete flash will bring the device back to life.
