[Q] Retrieve data off a dead nexus 4? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Any help would be appreciated. My Wife's Nexus 4 has died, an unfortunately she switched off the auto sync of photos. There's a lot of memories stuck on here.
Thought it was the red light of death due to complete battery drain. I've tried hard reset via power + volume down, plugging in charger with while holding power + vol down, leaving it on charge (for several days), disconnect/reconnect battery internally, wireless charging (bought new to fix this), & new battery. None of these has worked.
I've read that the memory is integrated onto the board, so there's no (easy) way to reconnect it.
As none of these has worked. I guess that means I'm ****ed. :'(
My next option was to buy a second hand nexus fully charge the battery, and swap it over, but as the new battery didn't work, I'm not sure if I'll have any luck. I guess it could have been fully discharged when I got it.
Any ideas anyone? My last hope is that I can somehow get onto the card via the PC. When I connect it I get "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (COM3)" in the connected devices. However, I can't access it. Is there anyway to get onto it?
The phone is not rooted, and running vanilla android, 4.4.3 i think.

So you have what's considered a hard brick. Even if you could get it running again, there wouldn't be any hope of retrieving your info as the attempt would wipe the phone, if the EMMC is even still intact and not wiped out already.
You can try and see if anything here http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/general/wip-unbricking-nexus-4-using-qpst-t2208289 might help or see if you can get it into Download Mode and restore with the LG tool, but either way, if it does work, it will get it booting, but everything should be wiped clean including internal storage.

Thanks for the info. Useful to know that if I tried that I'd wipe the data!
Its still under google warranty, so I don't need to get it working. They're willing to send out a replacement, but it's the data that I need, or at least attempt to recover. Although I'll probably end up voiding the warranty (have done so already with the battery swap!)
Has anyone came across JTAG connection to read the phone? It requires getting to the hardware... Anyone know of anyone in the UK that can offer this service?
Thanks

Has anyone any experience with fonefunshop?
They will attempt the process of a JTAG connection to read the data for £25....

[Q] Completely dead phone v.2

Hello everyone again!
I've been browsing the web today all day and tried to find a way to bring my phone back, but still nothing.
I have Samsung Galaxy S (Vibrant) on T-Mobile USA
Completely stock software.
Bought it around mid-September this year.
I've tried all methods with the vol+- and plugging it to my usb and such and such...
I've tried booting it from linux with AndroidSDK all it says is - device not recognized.
KIES doesn't work too.
ODIN doesn't as well, I've tried all methods with the keys combo and plugging the USB in different ways.
Phone is completely charged, when plugged to the outlet it doesn't show anything, also when pluggged to my laptop nothing comes up.
When trying to connect it with ODIN, nothing happens.
I believe I completely bricked it somehow installing the wrong ROM for it.
I've tried another battery from the same phone, but thats not the case too.
Before I did anything I backed up all my stuff to my SD card with the BACKITUP app on the Market. So I believe I would have everything on it, right?
Any help/ideas is appreciated!!!
If I can't do anything about it tonight, tomorrow I'm going to BestBuy where I bought it from, because I have a protection plan that would cover software and hardware failures. Now my question is, I have VERY personal information like , contacts, pictures and videos on my phone that I don't want anyone to get a hold of. Do you guys know if I exhange my phone tomorrow and when it gets sent out to Samsung will they have a way of getting ahold of that information?
Thank you all!!!
Take your battery out your phone
Plug in your usb to your pc
Plug the other end into your phone
Start up Odin
Hold down both volume buttons
Place your battery back in your phone
Then download mode should pop up, this worked for me when i bricked my Vibrant. I called this the resurrection technique, good luck!
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
It sounds like you did everything possible to try and revive it.....personally it sounds like it's toast. (Happened to me not to long ago)
Samsung or tmobile, I believe all they do is a manual data wipe if they cannot turn the device on. Should clear everything in the data portion at least. Not sure about internal SD card though.

[Q] Will not power on - nothing, nada... help

My Dell Streak will not power on, at all.
There are no lights, and there is no activity, nothing on the screen.
No difference when it is attached to a power brick - with/without battery and/or cover.
The PC will not recognize it.
Attempting to power on while holding various buttons does not work.
Is there any kind of reset button like the Streak 7 apparently has, some trick I can try or is this thing just plain bricked?
maybe insert the battery xDD
or charge it
[/sarcasm]
maybe u have to send it back or did you modify the system roms ?

I had this once.
Google for streakflash, it is a repair tool for streak.
Install it make sure you have all of the drivers in place.
Put the phone in safe mode.
1. pull batery
2. plug in cable phone to pc.
3. start the streak flash software.
4. hold the up volume as you put the battery and back on
5. software should see phone --- install rom.
It may take several attempts to get the safe mode working.
This worked for me.
Streakflash can be found at Streakdroid.com in recovery rom section
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
I do not think StreakFlash will work... the PC does not acknowledge when I plug in the device, it is off and stays off.
There was some modding going on (StreakDroid) and I was experiencing issues with it - small ones - so I was going back to a factory ROM when the phone stopped.
But now it will not power on -- at all. I would think that if something went wrong, horribly wrong, with the ROM it would still power on, just not much else. But this is worse, so I am assuming it is probably a hardware issue.
I guess the question at hand is simple. In theory, if my phone stopped powering on as a result of some failure in the ROM it would be repeatable...
Has anyone ever replaced the SD card inside the phone with a different one? (I can imagine someone trying a larger one.) If someone did, did the phone still work afterward, or did it then refuse to power on? Did returning the original SD to the phone cause it to work again?
I did NOT attempt what I just described. My phone is still too new for me to start disassembling it. But I guess I am going to search to see if anybody has.
Because it could be important research for streak owners.
If removing or replacing the internal SD, or failing to alter its contents propperly causes the phone to fail to power on then it would appear that my phone is in a similar state, otherwise it would have to be something else - hardware failure, most likely.
Knowing, hands down, that tampering with the SD could kill the phone would be important knowledge.
http://android.modaco.com/content/dell-streak-streak-modaco-com/321456/needed-brave-person-internal-sd-files-needed/
The discussion found at the above link indicates that the phone will still power on with a bad/damaged/missing internal SD. So it seems I am looking at a hardware failure.
Looking at it as a hardware issue are there any suggestions that might kick start the phone back to life? I know that the streak 7 has a reset switch, for instance, does the 5 have one that is user accessible? I have looked and nothing that I see looks like one to me. Or is there something else that might work -- some combination of battery/power cord/buttons?

MTP symbol when not connected to PC

Hi All,
Today when I unpluged my phone from charger I have noticed that I got USB symbol in notification bar, after checking what it is it turned out to be MTP connection but phone was not connected to anything. Next I took the battery out to reboot it and then I got empty battery sign with thermometer warning next to it!?! After few minutes phone booted in safe mode so I took the battery out again but this time for about 10 minutes. It is working fine since but Im worried that there might be something wrong with it. What do you think guys? Have someone had something like that?
Hey,
I had exactly the same thing happen today, tried everything I could think of, factory resets, formatting, cache wiping, tried reflashing multiple times with root and without root, XXKG2, XXKG1, KE7 and back to branded stock firmware. I also used a counter reset jig just in case that had any effect. Anyway, I ended up calling my provider and they suggested it was a hardware fault rather than software or settings and they are sending me a new one tomorrow.
I could only find one thread about a similar issue relating to the Galaxy S though I can't "refind" it, but basically there were a number of posters there with very similar issues and some of them had success cleaning the connectors in the port of the phone. I didn't really fancy trying this and breaking the connector or voiding my warranty and so I went with the easy option.
Hope that helps and hope you get it sorted easily!
Mark
Hi .. I have experienced more or less the same issue: mine was unplaged from charger and switched in "Driving Mode" showing a steering wheel in notification area. That happened many times so I just rebooted the phone and I got the empty battery sign with thermometer warning next to it me too!
Now usb connection is not working anymore I'm still able to charge the phone even flash is working using Odin, but no data connection is detected by any pc with any usb cable!
I've flashed the stock rom and tryed many cooked rom, but usb data is dead!
I think I have to return it on a service center!
Hope that is not your case!
Bye
Looks like it's not a one off then...one thing I would add, just in case anyone hasn't noticed, is that you can still use the phone as by plugging it in to charge then it does boot up properly. In addition, you can also still get into recovery and download via the Home+Volume key+power button methods so you can revert to stock rom etc. It's a bit fiddly to do this though as the phone seems to think its on charge and so you have to time the holding/pressing just right to beat the green battery and temperature warning sign...but at least we can do backups of all our data/apps.
I really do think it might be fixable with a bit of a pointy cleaning tool and maybe some isopropanol...but as I said I didn't want the risk of breaking something further. Worth a try if your carrier isn't very good at replacing things though!

[Q] installed stock rom, phone does not turn on now

I installed the stock rom through twrp and it seemed to work ok.
I then went into twrp again and tried to use it to wipe the sd card, which didn't seem to work. So i then tried to have it repartition the sd card and that also failed. At which point i turned the phone off - and havent been able to get it back on since.
however, i think the phone is actually still on in some way. When i plug it into my pc, it detects that the phone is plugged in, which it shouldn't do if the phone is actually off. It's been less than 24 hours since this happened so I'm sure the battery could still have juice in it.
Anyone have any ideas what went wrong here? And how i can fix this? Or did i just brick the phone?
What does the phone show up as when you connect it to your computer?
Nothing shows up in file explorer but under ports in device manager it shows qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (com3)
That's not good
how not good is it? Did i just create a paper weight or is there some way to fix this?
Any ideas what I did wrong? Like i said, the stock rom installed. This only happened after I tried to wipe/repartition the sd card in twrp.

You may be able to resurrect it via Jtag but that's out of my realm. Have you tried charging it overnight or holding the power+volume buttons for two minutes?
I've tried just holding the power button down for a minute but nothing happened.
I was actually thinking i should let the battery drain since right now it appears to be turned on to some extent since the PC detects it when i plug it in. The battery had about 80% full charge when it died. So i didn't think fully charging the battery would help. (tried doing the power button and volume button now, no effect)
jtag is new to me - just did a quick google search. Looks like it involves opening the phone up and shorting out some pins?
I wish I at least knew what the hell I did that caused this

I believe captain had a similar situation on his m8, tired to partition his SD and made a very expensive, yet very visually pleasing paper weight.
ah shoot - i didn't think anything dealing with the sd card could muck it up. The phone will work without an sd card normally doesn't it? Oh well, guess I'm out of luck now

Phone wont turn on

Hello,
Last night, i plugged my phone into the charger, woke up, phone was off, tried turning it on but didn't respond.
Anyone else has experienced anything like this?
Things i tried:
took out the battery, waited for a while and tried to turn it on.(nothing)
hold volume down key and press the power button.(nothing)
hold volume up key and press the power button(nothing)
Phone does not respond to anything. does not even vibrate.
LED does not blink when plugged to charger.
nothing.
If you pull out the battery, then put it in again and connect the phone to the power plug does it turn on? In thst case could be just the power button not working.
My god, it happened the same to me on Monday, yesterday. Went to sleep, put phone to charge, woke up in the morning, phone is turned off. Also bought a new original battery couple of months ago. Never had a problem really. I took it to official care service and they diagnosed one of the processors on the motherboard has failed.
Ofcourse them being them "they cannot fix this without replacing motherboard" meaning losing all the data.
Can anyone please advise what to do? I am willing to pay for the information or the work if you can do it. I am picking up the phone in two days and will try to do something myself. Care service provider is a total let down. In 2020 they say they cannot access internal memory. I cannot believe this.
By the way, did the OP get any info or resolution yet?

Mine it does not. What does happen, when I plug it in computer I hear the sounds a device has been connected but nothing happends, phone is not seen as charging or anything.
If you are able to reach at least the recovery, you can back up the memory and then replace the motherboard.
By the way, do you have any recovery installed?
How is the phone recognized by the pc? Try to look in the device manager, if you are using windows, to see which driver is loaded when you connect the G5.

Thank you for a quick response. Unfortunately after reconnecting the phone to notebook I only hear the sound "that sth is attached - win10", after opening the device manager nothing new is shown in the "usb section". In addition I also cannot find any past backups I have done of the phone so that option is out.
I did find these two firms 1) securedatarecovery and 2) r3datarecovery. I have sent an enquiry with description of my situation asking if they can do an image copy of the internal memory to another phone or at least access the data and waiting for their reply. Do you maybe have any experience with them and knowing if they are any good?
Unfortunately I have never tried a similar recovery. Usually the phone just gets stuck into bootloop or fastboot, but in the worst case, it is locked on a screen with the processor's name. For both these options there are guides on XDA. But for your case, i have no idea on how to proceed.
When you said there is nothing in usb section, you mean on the icon on down on right of the screen for ejecting the pendrives or you mean the device manager in the control panel?
Talking about recoveries, I didn't mean shops that repair phones, but a partition on the phone that can be used to reboot the phone in a simple operating system if android stops working. If you have never installed TWRP or OrangeFox, you have the stock recovery on your phone, that just erases everything and restores the phone to the original state.

Thanks again for reply. I meant in the device manager. I have never installed mentioned program, I did use LG default app for making backups in windows but those are too old to be relevant.
I found info online where people swtich emmc chip to another motherboard and just turn on the phone or use a direct chip reader to access data in explorer view through specific programs. Do you have maybe any info of that? Thanks again for all the answers so far.
In theory, that should be possible, but it would require very good soldering skills and tools. I have no idea of the exact procedure in this case.
