Could please anybody run my app for testing? - Xiaomi Redmi 5 Questions & Answers

I wrote some free apps available through F-Droid. A user wrote me that my app "Unpopular Music Player" crashes on his device whenever trying to play music. I analysed the symptoms (app just stops) and crash log (some exception inside Android, without my code being involved).
Now I am at the end of my wisdom. Could perhaps somebody test my app on his/her/its device? The device claims to be Xiaomi Redmi 5 with Android 8.1. The app ist just straight-forward using standard Android calls. It is available via either F-Droid and PlayStore.
PS: No other device ever had that problem during the last three years.

Tested it from fdroid with AEX 6.3 Pie.
Yes it does crash. It starts playing music but then it crashes.

Also this device has several audio issues. So its definitely device issue.

Thank you very much!
In the meantime three friendly people with different devices also performed the test for me, and the result looks like this:
Huawei, Android 8.0: no problem
Motorola, Android 8.1: music plays, but GUI crashes
Nokia, Android 8.1: same as Motorola
So your device seems to behave like the other 8.1 devices. I already found a workaround that worked fine with the Motorola, so I am going to publish this, and I hope that the other 8.1 devices will then work as well.
Again, thanks for testing!!!
Technical background: There seems to be a backward compatibility problem in latest Google's SDK when calling a deprecated function with a newer OS. Strange...
PS: I just noticed that you did not test with Xiaomi's OS, but some "AOSP Extended". And it's not 8.1, but 9. But this is no problem, so at least I know that Android 9 behaves like 8.1.

Yes, you can, and you may, but I actually draw most of my wisdom from "stackoverlfow.com".

Addendum: some days ago I had repaired the program, and since today the new version is available on F-Droid. It should now longer crash during notification creation.

[Source Code Posted] Nokia App Updates by HERG-A-FIED

Microsoft has denied my app from being published yet there are other apps like mine still in the store. I have asked what I did wrong and all I get is a snob response of:
Hello Robert,
The app was removed because it allows users to install apps on their device that bypass security measures on the Windows Phone Store. The app will not be restored, so you may not submit updates. This is our final communication regarding this issue.
Thank you,

So instead of trying to fight Microsoft I am posting my SOURCE CODE and I am jumping from Windows Phone Development and moving to Android. Yes I was a Windows Fan but now I am finished forever with Microsoft.
My source code if you want to use it is found here on my skydrive - http://sdrv.ms/16hCWRz
Thanks!!
Version 2 Submitted for Cetification
I have submitted V2 update on both apps (NOKIA APP UPDATES & SAMSUNG APP UPDATES)
Samsung V2 change log is:
Update 2.0.1.0
In light theme the background was not displayed correctly. This update fixes that issue.
____________________
In Nokia V2 change log is:
Update 2.0.0.0
I would like to thank my friend RAM for helping me with this upgrade.
Redesigned app from the App Studio Beta into C# Language.
When you click on link IE will not open, instead it goes directly to the store download.
Added AppBar at the bottom.
In AppBar, rate link goes directly to the rate app review, now able to share link, added e-mail link direct to me if any issues or letting me know about an app that needs adding, link to my other apps for download.
________________________________________________________________
Again these versions have just been submitted and both are in the certification stage. It will take a bit before the new version will show up so please be patient with me.
Thanks HERG62123 :fingers-crossed:
The pictures below are from V2 which is being certified.
Nokia App Updates V2 now posted in the link in Post #1.
Samsung App Updates V2 is also posted.
Ok I have updated both apps and are in the process of being certified.
As of right now V2 is up and posted but in the up coming V2.0.1.0 the changes are as follows:
Nokia App Updates V2.0.1.0 - added Connectivity Pro+ and Unit Converter Pro+
Samsung App Updates V2.0.1.0 - In the light theme background was not set correctly so this update fixes that issue.
V2.0.1.5 - Samsung App Updates being certified as we speak/
Added a donate link if user wants to donate but not in away to upset user
Made buttons smaller due to accidental opening while flipping
I am using it in my nokia 920 and it has scrolling issue. means it does not scroll at all. instead it opens the app that i do not want to when trying to scroll. so actually instead of scrolling up or down it pushes the spot where i want to scroll up or down and the app that is in there opens.

I think about security issues for Windows phone is too much.
1. I cannot use any other keyboard directly writing in SMS or anything. I have to copy paste.
2. Call recorder is not supported as well in WP 8 as this is also security issue.
3. What else is security issue I wonder ?
4. No video transfer in Viber. I think at least this should not be security issue.
Everything is security issue in WP 8. Why Microsoft does not think that people will abandon the OS ? there are too much security issues, I did not know about it before buying my Nokia Lumia 920 developer edition. To tell the truth i keep my phone because it is Nokia not because of OS at all but soon most likely my WP will be second device and I will go back to Android and buy HTC again, great UI and fast and now they update more frequantely.
New Version being CERTIFIED NOW
Link to new version is in the code box in post one, but beware it is still being certified still

But they say Windows phone is the future how come you go to Android ? Also if windows phone has security measures, what is that security measures that you do not want to except before you app is published ? I hear about WP lot of things related to security, this is very strange for me. Even phone call recorder is security related, then keyboard app other than Microsoft to type directly in the SMS is not implemented too. And many other that keep developer away somehow. How come ? GDR 3 is coming soon and maybe some changes will be there with their policy too ?

If you look at the swype keyboard for android it actually stores what you type and sends info back to the manufacturer.
A third party KBD on the phone would mean that KBD app could harvest your passwords and send them on to a destination of choice.
Similar issues exist with the call recorder. Who should have access to those recordings? You? Google? Rovio? NSA?
So yes, your app got booted because you don't grok the security implications of what you're trying to do, and in stead of trying to understand why you just blame the OS.
Please, go develop for Android, and I hope you make tons of money in the process. Just quit being a whining little girl about it.

Okay but you do realize it's on an unstable dev build on a Chromebook with one of the lowest-end processors in a Chromebook (ARM Rockchip)? Until it gets in the stable build and is also tested on other hardware (like the x86 Pixel), I wouldn't judge it too much.
Also, the privacy issues with ChromiumOS(not just ChromeOS), prevent it from being a real threat.

It's not about the "threat" (let's not be religious here) - it's about the options.
I honestly prefer a google supported OS with google supported hardware instead of a hack like Remix OS.
Chromebooks are amazing tools. I am expecting Android apps on Chromebooks to cause a very deep disruption in the PC market.
note the asus flip is the only chromebook with arm chip in the 3 ones that get the m53 dev update.
so i assume for the moment only the arm code is ready.
from what i know google does not want to use the android x86 open source project to make their x86 compatibility layer unlike remix os
this explain why no other chromebook have the playstore for the moment.
and yes this asus is only to show the extreme lower end part of chromebooks.
wait until the x86 code they are building is coming...
it will be another story.
you want to be scared?
imagine cloudready or just chromium os for pc
with playstore inside
if it comes.

Don't worry, while I am deeply against Google's behaviour in matters such as privacy, I do agree that if someone absolutely wants to use Google, he/she should be able to.
What I was referring to was being locked to sending personal data to Google, some of it unwantedly.
I think that ChromeOS, or at least ChromiumOS, should at least allow you to create a local owner account, with connecting to Google as an option, should you wish to.
Had that been an option, then I would have been of the same opinion as you.
Anyway remix for the moment make a really bad desktop.
Without a way to select sound inputs and outputs most of the time we got no sound or sound in the wrong output...
Also it need to change resolution on the fly like most os does...or just change screen scaling because remix os on some screens is not usable at all...
And what about include a desktop grade browser that support extensions.because remix browser is as useless as edge for the moment.
The things is ,chrome os have all those fixes already inside.

I agree with about half of what you said.
However, changing the DPI on the fly may have to wait until Android N.
And while I don't think that a browser has to have addon support, I do prefer it that way.
By the way, Firefox for Android supports both addons and themes, as well as plugins and addon frameworks (e.g. Greasemonkey), so technically you could put it on RemixOS.
And I thought RemixOS doesn't have it's own browser, rather arriving with the AOSP Browser?
I personally prefer Lightning Browser on Android, it's so light without comprimising on absolute necessaties.
All the rest, you're right, there already tools to those on the fly (with root).

well now it comes with chrome included.about firefox well i never used on android.
but in case of need of flash or silverlight for old sites i dont think it will handle them with addblock in same time.
root and tools in remix is another story, mostly because this is not easy, and most of those tools just not work on remix, for example on remix to be able to patch sound you need to change the kernel...
not stability or update friendly.
and not usable by everyone.
so i think google will go to the right way here.
but remix?
lets just say remix should count the month or year it have left.

You brought some very important points, however I have to say that I disagree with you, since:
1. Jide could always update the kernel to support on the fly audio channel switching.
2. 3rd party developers could do the above.
3. RemixOS is still in beta, and literaly is reinventing the wheel when it comes to Android, so instabilities are to be expected.
About #3, some of what RemixOS is doing is becoming redundant with the native Android APIs in MM and N, so if Jide chooses to yse the native APIs, then RemixOS will become much more stable.
FF can can handle Flash fine with an adblocker (I recommend uBlock Origin), however you need a patched version of Flash for it run at all on Android 4.4 and up.
And by the way, Silverlight is unsupported on both Android and ChromeOS.
Please don't think I'm bashing you, or being zealous.
I'm just trying to answer all the points, and I have a tendency to be formal.
I personally would love to use ChromiumOS, however the mandatory Google owned user policy (the owner account has to be connected to Google), prevents me from doing that.
I need the owner account to be strictly local, plus other reasons which will take several days or weeks to explain.
Thanks for telling me that RemixOS comes with Chrome, by the way.

no it is ok,you made some point but for android n it is wait and see on what will be available in the final version.
remix was good to kick the bee hive i think
it kinda made move the big name os and things are starting to change, but as always in the long run it is another story.
Chrome OS isn't open source and the framework for Android apps on it isn't too; which means only Chromebooks, and always online is part of owning one.
Google is already taking Android down that same path more so on MM and up.
for example with permission controls(enforcement) I would like to use a word processor and one of the permissions is location so i block that but guess what can't use app until i enable location again. have to use google app installer instead of aosp, etc ...
Windows as a service =$hitty Windows (always on even if you use a local account only)
Ubuntu= Unity was ok for 12.04 LTS(went downhill from there)
Android can be viable without Google Apps/services(despite perception) there is Fdroid and XDA labs; Chrome and Chromium can not.

it is true actual chrome os is closed source, but they use a open source base (chromium os)
and distro like cloudready or arnoldthebat are clearly advanced already.
i just hope someone will figure a way to port the android part on those distro.
but stock android N x86 will already be something good.

Using the Enterprise edition allows you more freedom, however, I still can't disable Cortana.
I like Unity 8, however Canonical is right now at crossroads, and they seem to be edging the same path as Google, Microsoft, and others.
By the way, I mainly use Gnome 3.20 as well as Budgie, since I mainly use Antergos (as well as Solus OS).

I know, I was just pointing out that there is an open-source version of Chrome OS.
And thanks, I didn't notice I had made a spelling mistake until I saw it in your quote of my previous post.
It should be "locked", not "locled".
I guess we all reach one point in life sooner or later when we stop being ideologists and start being consumers. I used to care and tinker with all my software and all my devices, tuning and optimizing, caring for a device like it was a pet. I was switching linux distros like clothes, writing my DOS drivers and optimizing memory usage in config.sys - nowadays I don't care. I want Android on my system just to stick to the same UI as my tablet and phone. I want Android for the apps, not for the ideology. I couldn't care less if my user is "owned" by Google - I can handle my own privacy.
Having said that, if Google or Jide will be the first to offer Android on desktop for me - I will use it. If Chromebooks will - I will use them. I am too lazy to think about open source. Just give me something that works and it's fine for me. No matter how much we delude ourselves, RemixOS doesn't work for now. I can't be expected to throw my nVidia card just because nVidia is closed source and gives no **** about the community.

I'm something in the middle, and I hope it will stay like that.
Ideology and practicality/consumerism.
Android and open Source Chromium
I read that GOOGLE will never release Chromium OS with android support. What I am saying is unless someone hacks the Chrome os and pulls the OS apart to get the required files and what not to make a hacked copy of chromium with android it is NEVER going to happen.

Rant about android 8/9

I have moaned in the past about the rapid pace of Android OS development, and the usual implication of buying a new phone is you forced to upgrade android, but going from Android 6 to 8, looks like its going to be brutal for me, and hard decisions to be made.
On my old S7 phone running Android6, I have the following working reasonably well.
Xposed
Instagram made useable by xposed (app without it is horrible)
Same with snapchat
Various privacy enhancements thanks to xposed
Anag app works perfectly.
Apps mostly honour auto sync setting
However titanium backup only barely functions, it seems it only works properly with supersu which is considered obsolete these days, this app last worked properly on my s5.
Using android 9, there is no xposed at all, to me having no xposed on android is like going out in the street naked.
Using android 8, xposed is in beta, initially it seemed stable, but I have noticed the contacts app goes crazy and unstable as well as phone app after 2-3 days uptime if xposed is enabled on phone.
Some xposed modules have become abandonware and no longer work on Android 8
Some apps including Anag which has no alternative app have become abandonware and dont work properly or at all on Android 8.
Auto sync is disabled on the phone yet I keep getting notifications from apps, related to background sync activity they are doing, e.g. dominoes apps downloads an advert, and sends me a notification asking me if I am hungry to order some pizzas (never ever seen it do this on android 6), various other apps having similar type behaviours, just 10 mins ago backgrounds hd sent me a notification to inform me its downloaded new backgrounds, how has it done this when I havent gave it permission to background sync? ,either the auto sync setting is broken or there is some new feature in newer android that allows apps to spam you. I suspect its the latter, as I think even with auto sync enabled on android 6 I wasnt getting all this app spam.
The problem is this, new phone hardware is nice, my newest phone is lightning fast compared to my s7. But ultimately its the software that makes the phone. Sadly there is no Android 6 for the oneplus6, I dont expect much sympathy on the XDA community as the majority of people here seem happy to always jump on the latest builds of android without a second thought, often beta/alpha builds to boot. But felt like I needed to rant.
I dont know what I am going to do moving forward, I will probably test OOS 8.x, just to rule out custom rom issues, and if issues persist I can forsee myself selling the phone and buying an older model that still is faster (but wont be as fast) just so I can run android 6. I wonder if anyone else has ever deliberately avoided latest model phones to keep old android.
Its becoming evident to me, that many developers cannot keep up with the pace of android updates, so we get this happening, apps becoming abandonware, and users like myself either have to find replacement apps or accept to lose features on their phone. I wonder if IOS has these issues or if that has full backward compatibility that keeps old apps working. I wouldnt be unhappy if e.g. new android major releases were every 2 years with 5 years security support for each release as well. But a sane software support policy goes against google's policies.
Its kind of interesting as we have many news articles about the problem of android fragmentation as such, and often these articles blame everyone except google, they blame end users, they blame phone manufacturers, and they blame mobile carriers, but they never consider the problem might be google simply releasing new versions of android too rapidly.

P40 Pro+ Start with GMS Sideload or App Search?

I have a P40 Pro Plus on the way and I want to know if I should do the app search to get the apps from my old phone first or do the GMS sideload first?
Also I'm reading the sideload won't work anymore, so what's the procedure around it?
If you use phone clone it will transfer all your old phone data to new phone all google apps that would work on your phone will be transferred automatically.
I am using chrome maps calculator snapseed on my P40 Pro Plus without Signing In Ofcourse
Use F Droid Or Aurora Store those Work Perfectly well.
And after that if any Apps do not get transferred you can search for them in App Gallery Or Petal Search Even App Finder Is A Existing Choice already Installed in Phone.
Hope this Helps.

I have a P40 Pro Plus on the way and I want to know if I should do the app search to get the apps from my old phone first or do the GMS sideload first?
Also I'm reading the sideload won't work anymore, so what's the procedure around it?

I had before gmail, maps, gboard and maybe a few more Gapps working without GMS, and all worked really well, but I couldn't log in. Despite that, everything was working just fine.
Then I made a firmware downgrade to install GMS. But today I would not recommend it, because I think it's too much work for a small advantage... BUT, if you bought any app from PlayStore, you will need to install GMS to make them work properly.
I installed GMS just because I bought 2 games and 4 language apps.
I'm thinking to start the phone, not update the OS, do the GMS sideload install, do the app search, and then go from there with the OS update.

I think it is a good approach.

Side loading works even with the latest firmware. There is a date hack that needs to be done. Below is the link

I think this is generating lots of confusion. Redskull has this in his latest video, if I'm not mistaken and people are not getting the "hack" portion of it. It's just turning the date update off and putting 2018 or 2019 in and done. Or is there more to it?
Also people are not listing the firmware they have on the phone that allows or rejects the installation. This is what Maik Reifschneider criticized in German in his video. I agree fully with Maik's complaint, especially considering how much investment of time is involved in downgrading and potential risk.
I mentioned the following to Redskull and he agreed it was a good path:
Check firmware at first start, if later than .136, then proceed to Maik Reifschneider's FW downgrade procedure. Then go through Redskull's installation of Google, then search for the apps via the play store and Huawei's app clone, update the FW.
Can you please confirm that this "hack" you speak of is simply turning auto date and time off and inserting 2018 or 2019 in there? We have to differentiate "hack" vs. changing a setting or a "trick" since we're already in fairly involved procedures. I surfed through this guy's video and he races through what looks like that with the phone off screen at a point.

Yes, the hack I was referring to is turning the date and time off, manually setting it and then set to auto again.
I have tried multiple times without the date hack, and it failed to sign in to the google account. But doing the date thing, allowed me to successfully sign-in.
BTW I have tested it on the 10.1.0.155 firmware, and it was successful.
In my opinion, downgrading to install google services is a little risky considering we have a very limited support for this device by developers.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for clearing this up. Will likely avoid the downgrade and I'll inform Redskull of the findings (and so should you) because he's also unde the impression a downgrade could be necessary for unknown reasons specific to some phones, not necessarily the FW.

There are DIRECTV apks going back to 2016 that you can sideload and use especially when:
-- Crashing.
-- Won’t open.
-- Won’t respond.
-- Isn’t working properly.
-- Discontinued.
Not to mention that new updates may have many bugs that you may not be comfortable with. Developers tend to keep their apps updated with the latest version of Android. So, if you have an old or even new Android version, the new interface and features compatible with new Android version may break the app.
Your device hardware may not be compatible with the updated version of the app.
You may not like the newly added features or the interface overhaul.
Your favorite feature may get removed for any reason.
The updated version may get filled with ads.
