I restored full backup from TWRP because my phone is bootloop.
However Restore error
"extractTarFork() process ended with ERROR=255" at "modem_fw" partition.
I don't have other full backup, so I try to reboot.
Then my phone never response.
I connected USB and pushed Vol- Power button more than 30 sec to go to bootloader, but no response.
Pushing Vol+ Power button and Vol+- Power button is same.
LED next to front camera is also no response.
I tried dload method that I place UPDATE.APP in "dload" folder at the root of external SD card and push Vol+- Power button but no response.
To sum up, no adb no fastboot.
Can anyone fix my phone?
Sorry for my bad English.
Hey, I have a similar problem to you. Badly uploaded modem_fw and the phone only starts to fastboot. I tried to upload every possible partitions through fastboot without success
Any help?
i had something similar. tried to restore an backup with a encrypted data partition. try to boot erecovery somehow. usually wait until screen comes that says the device has been unlocked, and there are several boot modes for you to select. choose option 1 (volume up) to boot eRecovery, do a full factory reset (that erecovery will download the firmware via wifi. never seen something great like this). after it finished downloading and flashing you should be able to boot android. the erecovery also appears if it detects something strange, for example when you restore a valid backup. but then you can just choose reboot and it will be fine.
in order to make a valid twrp backup, you have to disable force encryption. get/extract the stock ramdisk on your system, open magisk manager, untick both checkboxes, tap install magisk and choose to patch your ramdisk image. once done, flash the patched file via fastboot to the "ramdisk" partiton. then you will never ever have any trouble with twrp again.

Hey FalkorTV, How do you start fastboot?
What button do you press?
If you can start fastboot, you can boot recovery.
fastboot reboot recovery
As gordon0001 said, you can do factoryreset.
you can also try dload method.
My phone starts immediately in fastboot mode. I can't boot recovery using this command. This command not found on my version fastboot.exe
Phone not booting to huawei logo, only fastboot mode when connecting the cable to the telephone.
Any help method?
if u have fastboot working, then extract stock recovery from updater.app flash stock recovery to recovery_ramdisk u need stock recovery first, then u can use the fastboot command mentioned above fastboot reboot recovery, then wipe all, then make a restore tru wifi .

I had a similar problem and using the eRecovery to do a full factory reset that you mentioned didn't fix the problem my device just gets sent back to the eRecovery still. By the way my device is not the Huawei P20 Lite, it's the Huawei MediaPad T5.

I think this recovery.img was not walid... I did that with my phone too, and nothing appear in screen. U have to flash another kernel (i suggest, the doomlords kernel). After that turn on the phone, and press the volume up, when doomlord logo appears.
hope it helps.
How are you getting on is your phone back on?

If you tried the methods above with no joy it obviously isn't installed. With the cwm you are trying is there a .bat file in the download on your computer. If so while your phone is plugged into PC run the bat file and follow onscreen instructions. Then try launching cwm again. If you havnt managed it yet leave a message and I'll find it.

I am posting here as I am facing the same problem.
I have been following this guide to flash my phone with CM10 from ICS stock rom.
h#ttp#://androidlegend.com/xperia-s-update-to-android-4-1-jelly-bean-with-cyanogenmod-10/
I have successfully followed everything done previously, including Unlocking the bootloader, getting root access, installing busybox, using RecoverX to install CWM.
I copied the FXP150-cm-10.1-20121209-UNOFFICIAL-mint.zip to sdcard, is it this that is required to flash to ROM or the boot.img that is inside the zip?
And I am stuck on that part where I have to reboot into recovery mode. I have tried
a) Connecting my phone and opening fastboot mode and then try to keep the vol up pressed to open recovery mode.
b) Without connecting, powering my phone on and pressing volume up. But there is no blue LED
c) Without connecting, powering my phone on and continuously tapping on sony logo. After that Xperia logo.
But I can not enter the recovery mode.
A little guidance please?
Flashing CM needed a seperate kernel. Keep following the instructions to use fastboot to flash the boot.img
Power the phone off. Hold vol + then plug the USB cable in. There should be a blue light.
Poorly written tutorial IMO. Should be flashing kernel first then the rom to save some panic.
I asked the Sony-Support, they say that there is no recovery-mode.(for Xperia U, but they are the "same")

Guys, dont ask Sony cause stock ROM doesnt have recovery.
If you want to flash CM you must fastboot the boot.img inside the zip file, before that put the ROM into your phone memory, power on the phone and keep pressing vol up, enter into CM recovery and flash rom from phone memory. Wipe before and after.
Agree, stock ROM doesn't have Recovery Mode. When you turn your phone with VOL_UP, nothing happens :cyclops:

try flashing it again, maybe your first flash had an error.
Met the same problem and here what I did:
-Take off the battery in 10 minutes and put it back
-Plug the charger into the phone and do the logging in CWM steps (press and hold the volumme up, press the power button).
Finally it worked, hope this can help
Hi guys! Yesterday I decided to unlock the bootloader, flash recovery (twrp 2.8.6) and the cyanogen 11 nightly. Everything went good until I tried to install the gapps, I noticed that the physical shortcut to enter in recovery (after the turning off, of course) didn't worked: the phone restarted or boot up the rom, but I was able to enter in recovery from the advanced restart menu from the rom. Going into the info of the phone where it says kernel there was written "unknown" and no way to overclock. So I decided to reinstall the kernel (the cyanogen11extended) from twrp, everything went good except that I couldn't restart into recovery, it stuck on rebooting until shutdown. So I tought let's use fastboot to erase ad flash the recovery partition and the kernel, but it didn't do anything even if on the cmd said okey and finished in something about a second, but when i tried to enter in recovery I always get stucked on rebooting. So I tought"well if I have the system image I could flash it with fastboot and restore the stock kernel", so I erased the system partition and tried to flash the system.img and I get the message that it is too big for the destination device. Now I don't have a system installed tye hotkeys don't work and I'm stuck on LG screen logo.
There is a solution or do you suggest to send the device in warranty, instead?
Pull the battery and try to enter download mode.
Hi vagelis! You mean without the battery? The hotkey is vol up+power, right?
Edit: i tried without the battery pressing the vol up + power (also tried with vol down + power) and it doesn't work, on the screen I have an image which says to put the battery in, and holding the keys has as only result to reboot the phone showing the image... I guess there's no hope right?
Edit2: I entered download mode using the g2 method, now I have to downoad the kdz rom and the lg flash tool to unbrick, right? But where I can download it since the lg site for the firmware is apparently down?

Ok guys, I was able to unbrick entering in emergency mode e doing the flash tool stuff. The strange thing is that when I start the flash tool putting the file kdz and going forward in the next window, when I click on read phone info the program stops working, if I click directly on stuff then the lg mobile support tool is opened. Now when it starts to write on the phone, the tool says that an error occurred (something like "the server is offline) but on the phone it says the port com and start to download the rom. If I say ok to the error of the lg mobile support tool it stops the firmware update and stops the program, if I don't click ok the firmware update end is work unbricking the phone.
Now I noticed that with the stock rom from the version v10h until the last one towelroot is not working, so I downloaded the v10g germany version (since the italy version was offline) and flashed with the same procedure as I have done with the unbrick, so I could run towelroot and flash the twrp and the cyanogenmod11. Thank you so much for your time!!
The topic is quite old, but I've just solved that problem. You should just do it:
1) hold power and vol down till you see LG logo -- immediately release these buttons and
2) immediately hold power and vol up button to enter into factory reset menu.
Then click "yes" and next "yes", too.
That's all.
Hello everybody,
since saturday I have a really big problem. Until now I tried to find a similar problem from an other person in the internet in order to fix mine but that was not possible.
So in my last hope I am now writing it down here. Hopefully someone can help me:
The phone was/is rooted and has TWRP as recovery installed (v3.21). The software is still the original EMUI.
On saturday my Huawei Honor 5x (Model KIW-L21) gave me the notification that there is an software update avaible. So I backuped everything with TWRP to my sd-card and copied it to the computer. After this I ran th eupdate. The update downloaded the new software, then rebootet to the recovery, installed the update.zip automaticly and rebootet again. Then there was written on the screen "Huawei software installing ... DO NOT unplug usb or press any key!". Also there was "0%" all the time. It did nothing. also the phone was not connected with usb.
After an hour I long pressed the power button. after two seconds there was the text "Warning: The powerkey is long pressed, please release powerkey to avoid system crash" displayed. I pressed it longer and the phone turned off.
Now I have the following problem. When the phone is turned off, I can:
press the power button: the phone starts, the "honor ... android" logo is shown but nothing more happens. ("fastboot devices" -> no devices found, "adb devices" -> device found but no permission to enter commands)
press the power button and the volume up button and the volume down button at the same time: normally this should take me in the recovery mode, mut it doesn't anymore. Instead the "EMUI" update screen is shown (see above "huawei software installing ..." with "0%") ("fastboot devices" -> no devices found, "adb devices" -> no devices found)
press the power button and the volume up button at the same time: I get a huawei menu with three buttons: "reboot", "wipe user cache" and "factory reset". I tried both (wipe and reset) wich both finished without an error. But nothing changes ("fastboot devices" -> no devices found, "adb devices" -> no devices found)
press the power button and the volume down button at the same time: I get an "eRecovery" menu from huawei with three buttons: "Reboot", "power off" and "Recover with latest software". The last button lets me connect to my wifi and then "searching for packages", with failes all the time. ("fastboot devices" -> no devices found, "adb devices" -> no devices found)
This problem occures with and also without the sd-card. Also there is no "update.zip" or "update.app" on the sd-card.
I really hope somebody can help me. I only need to get into the recovery. If I am there I can recover the backup or install a new ROM. That would be no problem for me. But at the moment I get nothing :crying:
Or maybe a tool to reset the phone completly? to start over from the beginning?
greetings,
Christopher

to enter fastboot mode
1. Place the device in fastboot mode:
Turn off the device. (then wait for at least 2 seconds) For a mobile phone, press and hold the volume down and power keys simultaneously for at least 10 seconds (for a tablet, press and hold the volume up and power keys).
2. If the above operations do not switch the device to fastboot mode, please try the following steps:
Turn off the device. (then wait for at least 2 seconds) Then insert the USB cable and press and hold the volume down and power keys simultaneously for at least 10 seconds.
Step 2 worked for me every time

AGAIN AND AGAIN, when you receive an update notification you MUST first flash back to stock recovery or it won't update with TWRP !!!
- To recover a stock recovery you need to boot onto download mode/your bootloader mode (Power+Volume Down) : plug your phone to your computer and type "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img".
From there you will loose your connexion with your computer. So unplug your phone and reboot manually holding down the Power button for some seconds.
If the system ever update your phone, BE VERY PATIENT !
The above note should probably part of a sticky !!!
If you don't get back to your Home screen and if you need TWRP back, reboot again onto download mode/your bootloader mode (Power+Volume Down) : plug your phone to your computer and type "fastboot flash recovery twrp.img" (or whatever the custom recovery name).

The problem a lot of people were having is TWRP flashed enough of the update that they lost custom recovery and had no way to get to the bootloader / fastboot ... that's why I posted the instructions above and in about 4 other threads.
Did you ever get your phone updated ?

Working great thanks a lot!
"fastboot & rescue mode" with a working usb connection.
What is the next step? If I now flash the stock recovery, does the phone manages to finish the system update?
Or should I flash the twrp recovery and not the stock revocery?
greetings,

EDIT:
I flashed the stock recovery and also the twrp recovery. both times i startet the phone and hoped the installation of the new software will go on. But it didn't.
So my problem is still resistant. so what can I do? How do I stop the update from blocking my recovery? I do not need the update. maybe I can reset my device with the fastboot access somehow?

I found the stock recovery at https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=51004 but I have no idea what update I must use and how to use it.
Could you please give me a concrete link with a little introduction? Do I have to copy the update file to my sd-card? or do I have to use the "fastboot update *" command?
(Most of the files are for "KIW-L24" but I have a "KIW-L21" ... is there a significant difference? Od do I can use also the other files?)
Also, don't I have to stop the wrong update first?
greetings,

both did not work. I copied them into the "dload" folder in the root of the sd-card and started the phone with volup+coldown+power.
The only thing the phone said was "Software install failed! ... Press powerkey to conrifm ... Shutdown system now".

The only way I know to flash a ROM, is to go over TWRP.
So I now did the following:
Phone power off
connect to pc
voldown+power
in the fastboot flash the recovery from twrp
shutdown
copy the "customromtemplate-5x-plk21-b130-r3.zip" to the sd-card
volup+coldown+power what normally starts twrp, but only the huawei update manager is shown
I only need twrp, no update and nothing else.
What options do I have left, because "flash a ROM" is not working ...
How can I stop this terrible update that is blocking my twrp?

are you flashing TWRP ?
you enter recovery with Volume up and Power

I flashed TWRP using "kiwi_twrp_3-21_recovery.img". I also used this one last time (one month ago) and it worked then and also now.
Flashing was successful, but when I press volup+power I get a huawei menu.
At the top there is the "EMUI" circle and below there are three buttons:
Reboot system now
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
I can move around in this little menu by using the volume keys.
But this is not TWRP.
And normally I enter the recovery by using volup+voldown+power. But this is currently blocked by the update progress from huawei.

You still have stock recovery
Flash TWRP -
fastboot flash recovery kiwi_twrp_3-21_recovery.img
Do not reboot the phone
Hold power plus volup and TWRP should load.
Now flash your rom

From the white boot loader screen hold volume up and power for 15 seconds

This is the polish version of manual, I will write you how to do it:
1. Download ADB and Fastboot
2. Extract to c:/adb
3. Download from this thread firmware for you (extracted version!) http://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-5x/development/stock-kiw-l24-l21-t3312684 If you have problem what firmware you have to install, take look at the back side of phone, at the down you will se KIW-L21 or 24 (or another). Copy all files to adb folder
4. Rund adb program
5. Write in the command line: cd c:/adb
6. Connect phone to usb to download mode (power and vol- combination)
7. Write in fastboot command: fastboot flash recovery recover.img (or recovrey .img, see the file and type it name) - wait for install
8. And now: If the flash is succesfull, reboot the phone to recovery (power and volume+) and wipe all data. Phone have to work.
But if flash is not succesfull, plug again usb with download mode
9. Write this commands: fastboot flash cust cust.img -wait for install
and: fastboot flash system system.img -also wait, system.img can took a while
10. Now you will enter recovery and wipe all data
11. Again plug usb cable and install firmware with those commands:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash cust cust.img
fastboot flash cache cache.img
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
fastboot flash system system.img

With this I am not able to start my phone again. It will boot normally and I have a clean android. No userdata and no root.
So I now did the same like last month:
Unlock OEM -> not necessary, because it is already unlocked
install twrp with fastboot
reboot to twrp and there it is again
I did exactly what you said and also I did exactly the same thing I did last month but both times there is the same result: TWRP will not show up.
The "stock recovery" is blocking twrp in some sort of way. I can do whatever I whant ... volup+power out of the fastbook mode, or with "adb reboot recovery", or other ways ... twrp will not show up.
How is this possible? I also tried different twrp images. (The "kiwi_twrp_2-27_recovery.img" and "kiwi_twrp_3-21_recovery.img" out of your repository, and also the "twrp-3.0.0-0-kiwi.img" and "twrp-3.0.2-0-kiwi.img" from the twrp website itself ... always the same result: no twrp)
I am really at the end of my knollage

First off thanks for the very informative post.
Without actually having the phone in my hands I'm also stumped at what to try next.
After flashing TWRP and still in the boot loader unplug the USB before you reboot with power and volume up.
That's all I can think of right now

I must thank you for all your help
So I now read some more articles and tried some things. So there are old problems solved, but also new problems came up:
For me it is no longer possible to flash a recovery that is permanent. I have no idea why but I am ignoring it, because I can start the phone with voldown+power into bootloader and then use a usb-connection to enter the following command:
fastboot boot twrp-3.0.2-0-kiwi.img
Click to collapse
So i can enter twrp temporary and because I do not need TWRP this often, that is ok for me.
BUT:
with the extracted "UPDATE.APP" and flashing some "*.img" files manually (see my last post), I have a more or less working "L21C432B130" version of android.
So now there is everything original (recovery, system, ...).
The update to "L21C432B140" is still not working. But that is also something I can live with.
So now I whant to restore my old system in order to have my old data/apps/... .
So I enter my temporary TWRP, go to Restore and select my old backup. Then the restore starts. Restoring EFS, Restoring efs2, Restoring Recovery, Wiping System and Formatting System using make_ext4fs. All of this in this order are successful. But the last operation "Restoring Data" failes with the following error message:
extractTarFork() process ended with error 255
Click to collapse
So I searched on xda and found out, that this could be ANYTHING. I tried five or six different methods in order to fix it. In the end I am not sure what really fixxed it, but now I can restore my old update without any error. The phone now runs and I have all my old data.
There are four main differences on my phone to the time before I tried that damn update:
1. I have less internal storage
2. I have no TWRP permanently avaible
3. I can not Factory-Reset
4. I can not use a "UPDATE.APP" inside a "dload" folder on the sdcard
(the last two things always failes)
But as long as the android system now runs smooth again I can live with these things.
Is there maybe anything else I should be careful? maybe a known bug/problem that I have not seen yet?
The reason why I wanted to update in the first place was, that I have problems with my sd-card.
Some Apps do not allow to use the external storage. Easy Voice Recorder is the main problem. But also the Call Recorder has problems with it.
Is this a well known bug? Does a update helps? And if so, how do I update? (Now I know how to rescue my phone, so I could try it again xD )
Or does this problem gets solved with an custom ROM? If so, what good custom ROMs are out there for the honor 5x?
Or is this a problem that is not possible to fix on the honor 5x? Because these apps does not have this problem on my HTC One M9 ...
And thanks again so much for all your help

Christopher

from your current state you can try flash recovery with TWRP by choosing install / image / your version of TWRP / choose recovery / swipe to flash
Now choose reboot / recovery
As for the sdcard try the sdcard fix for kit Kat in the play store. It works for some older apps.

Use stock recovery plus the full update for your version.
You have to hold volup + voldown + power to start the update
Refresh TWRP / Root and your good to go

Same problem here.... Any suggestions what would be the solution or fix?
Download this utility: https://mega.nz/#!Xh5BWAaB!aNS2naZOnlW90qZuz70A0Sxim_2qJcfzI2CsbTH1jX8
and last TWRP for HM3 https://eu.dl.twrp.me/ido/twrp-3.2.1-0-ido.img.html
Unpack fastboot_toolkit and copy downloaded TWRP img in this folder and rename it on twrp.img (and overwrite if some twrp file is in it yet).
Turn phone off and start in fastboot mode (VolumeMinus + Power) nad connect to PC (Win 64bit), run instalacia_TWRP_windows, you see green command window, push any key. After "Hotovo!",push any key again and phone auto restart in TWRP and then you can wipe and flash again.
---------- Post added at 11:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:27 PM ----------
If your phone auto turn off and restart to logoin bootloop again and again and you can´t stay permanently in fastboot mode,it is bad problem, you can try EDLmode and MiFlash flash with fastboot ROM,but maybe even EDL is not avaible. You must try and try, last time I has succeeded after hours....
what's instalacia_TWRP_windows?

Install TWRP from Windows (PC) in slovak language.
Hello,
I have just tried to flash my SAMSUNG A20e with TWRP trough ODIN.
I have put the phone in developer mode and did all the things acording to the tutorials. I rebooted through bootloader and tried to upload the TWRP file. At first, it didn't quite work - it always failed in ODIN. Then I tried one that finally worked (ver. 3.3.1-0) but when I tried to boot into TWRP it is just stuck on the loading screen with the TEAMWIN logo and thats it. I have tried to restart it, connect it back to the PC, get to the recovery, leave it for a long time ect., but nothing helped. I cannot even turn it off - when I press and hold the power button or power and volume up buttons together nothing happens. When I try to pres and hold power + volume down buttons it restarts and it gets back to the loading screen with the logo.
If you have any more questions let me know.
Thanks in advance.
I have the same problem can you help me please??
I suggest to flash a matching version of TWRP over the existing one.
Code:
fastboot devices
fastboot flash recovery <TWRP-IMAGE-NAME.img>
If this fails to boot into TWRP, try
Code:
fastboot devices
fastboot boot <TWRP-IMAGE-NAME.img>
This should reboot the device into TWRP directly and from there you should be able to reboot to recovery again as this is is not a permanent TWRP.

I got the same issue...
There is no adb or fastboot connection when in TWRP splash...
The only solution in my mind is to wait for the battery to drain out and then boot into download mode (vol UP + vol DOWN + usb cable connect).
Will wait and report back
Edit: And BOOM! Done!
Downloaded official firmware, flashed via Odin and it's alive again!
I'm having a similar issue but I am unable to get to download mode or boot the phone, my computer doesn't connect to it in the current state it is in.
the phone has been recovered from this state but the person that did this is very busy now and doesn't get much time to hang out anymore, if I don't get an answer before I contact him ill update my post with a fix for anyone else that is having the same issue.
edit: ok so I feel like an idiot as my cable only did charging as I don't have my original cable so I found another cable and it was all good.
