Best ROM/gapps for me? [havoc/aosp/x.eu] - Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 Questions & Answers

Hi I will be getting Mi Pad 4 Plus soon and I will be wanting to flash a custom ROM. There are few that caught my eye but as my technical knowledge is minimal on these I would like to ask you guys for recommendations.
1) Havoc OS - https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-pad-4/development/rom-havoc-os-v2-0-t3881690/
2) AOSP Treble - https://github.com/GBouerat/xiaomi_mi_pad_4/tree/master/ROM
3) Xiaomi.eu - https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/miui-10-0-10-1-10-2-stable-release.47170/
What I want:
- Preferably Android 9.0
- Preferably no miui
- Futureproof for longterm updates (no need for wiping device/apps/settings is a big plus)
- Batterylife
- No gaming planned unless on console emulators rarely
- Used mostly for video watching online or locally
I think in this case I should go with 2) as it seems to be easly what I want but I read somewhere that GSI images are not the best for Mi Pads, is that true? 1) seems also good but there are issues in comments that I am a bit afraid of. 3) is the ROM I will fallback if there is no good choice, even though it is only Android 8.1 currently.
As a side note, what are the best Gapps to install? I think I will be needing minimal of these just to run Play Store, maybe youtube or gmail.

I installed Havoc OS (which is 9.x) yesterday and it was pretty easy.
as for GAPPS I downloaded the minimal one (the one without youtube). Installed Magisk + modded youtube (the one without loading any ads)

I know they must be floating around since flashing ROM's are so popular now and several years ago I did it as a hobby many times to test out on cheap devices but I can't find any posts on detailed walk throughs on how to do it with current devices. The install guides for things like Havoc are like 4 lines that assumes you're experienced at flashing too. Do you have any resources that can give more detail on how to get Havoc flashed on a Mi Pad 4? Here is the install guide from Havoc (not exactly detailed or easy for someone who hasn't done it in a long time lol):
1. Download the ROM and GApps from the links above.
2. Wipe System, Data, Dalvik, Cache.
3. Flash the ROM and GApps.
4. Reboot and Enjoy.

What I can tell there is no official TWRP for Mi Pad 4 but that shouldn't be a problem. As usual everything is at your own risk as they say on every guide
Check this out, should be OK. He also has written instructions in the video description.

If you do not want to use his zip-files there are many more pages that explains the way to do it.

The Photon 4g was my first smartphone purchased about 2 years ago. I got it because of its HDMI port for my home projector and 8MB camera.
I purchased it from a developer on ebay (no longer selling) who rooted and installed the Th3Bill ROM cm_10_20121127_UNOFFICIAL_sunfire.zip. It was good, say 7.5/10. It was good though a little buggy and the loss of a properly functioning camera/video was not acceptible! And I understand it was not Th3Bill' issue... or any other Dev.
Im not a developer, rather a Ubuntu/ Fedora man, so customizing is a part of my weekly tasks. Since then, I have attempted and installed nearly every other ROM out there. Too many dead links to mention. And my phone was buggy for installs so I will add my most successful install process and current links.
This assumes you have already unlocked the boot loader and rooted the Photon. Search out your own upto date methods for these processes. Below links are for those experienced users who are familiar with the Pros, Cons and workarounds of playing ROOT. :c)
My method for a Factory rest and fresh install using ROM Manager 5.5.3.7:
Reboot into recovery mode with the app or at restart with buttons.
1. wipe data/factory reset
2. wipe cache partition
3. advanced
4. wipe Dalvik Cache
5. wipe Battery stats
6. Fix Permissions 1
7. Report Error
8. Show log
9. Fix Permissions 2
10. *****Go Back*****
11. install zip from sdcard
If you get an error 0 or 7 message that it was aborted. Go through all these steps a few more times and it should install.
If you get all the way to the welcome screen and its buggy... make certain you have the proper gapps installed. Start over if they are wrong. In addition, if the launcher is buggy, be certain to use the pre legacy launcher first. After all accounts and updates are complete, then use install and use your favorite apps.
Again, Im not a developer, so dont expect me to get techie 4u. Just wanted to minimize others learning curve with this great phone that will may soon become a smart paper weight!

MIUI 8 or Marshmallow (RR, LineageOS)- switching proposed? How to keep data and apps?

Hi there,
currently I am still using MIUI 8 Global (7.4.20) in Beta version with weakly updates on my RM Note 2 Prime and I am quite fine with it (above all the really impressive fast charging time).
But I also want to keep in touch with newer versions of Android as far as possible without giving up the overall usability of my phone and its components (Battery Live, Charging Time, GPS, Camera, Audio...).
So I try to keep myself informed about newer ROM versions for RM Note 2 which seems unfortunately not be supported by Xiaomi regarding newer Android Releases.
That lead my to RR and Lineage OS with RR seeming to be the better choice.
Now I am wondering what would be an efficient way to flash one of these ROMs with newer Android over my current MIUI ROM while keeping or restoring all my data, pictures, chats, navigation routes etc.?
Does Xiaomi PC suite also work with RR or Lineage OS?
All experiences, hints and tips are welcome!
Did someone else switch from MIUI to a newer Android ROM and what is your proposed procedure?
Thank you in advance!
Bye
Best way to get a custom ROM is to flash twrp!
When install with twrp you have to choose if you want to clear data, cache, dalvik, system, internal, external and otg, and so if you want to leave your data, the best option is to install Titanium backup (better with pro version) here you can safe all your apps (with all its data of course) and leave the backup in your internal.
Afterwards you can download any ROM you want (LP recommended!!) And better place it external if available.
Also to download gapps (Google apps) recommended
Than backup all your data with Titanium backup and you can boot after backup in twrp which is needed for custom ROMs!
Here you have to clear system (otherwise you will get error, because of cm based and miui based ROMs) and data+dalvik/cache.
Now you can choose with the install method your ROM and gapps and install.
Now you have to boot up system and after setup go into settings, build number 5times clicking, go to developer options and grant root access to all apps!
Now you have to install Titanium backup app again (pro recommended again) and choose the restore option
Now it will reinstall all apps with all its data and you can go on!
Hope I could help a bit
@Noobsi:
Thank you! Helps quite a lot. But what do you mean by "LP recommended"? Which ROM do you refer to here?
Regarding changing ROM (in my case this would be from MIUI to some kind of MM) I read that restoring Apps with their data is not recomended due to possible filesystem changes and things like that.
He means Lollipop (android 5) recommended, because marshmallow isn't stable enough.

Thanks - this will leave me with MIUI further (since they [Xiaomi] will never bring it to newer Android versions it seems).
Try Dual Boot Patcher: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2447534
I use it to have MIUI 8 and Lineage OS 13, and when reboot, shows a menu to choose where want to boot.
Wow, did not even know such kind of things exists for Android mobiles too!
Thanks a lot! Are you happy with LOS13? Why did you choose it (instead of RR or something else)?
What are the diffs between MIUI8 and LOS13 you are experiencing? And which OS are you using more often?
And regarding Dual Boot Patcher: I also discovered other multi boot managers in Play Store for example, could I use them too or are all of them restricted/proposed to/for certain devices?

[FIRMWARE] ASUS ZenUI ROM for Teclast T8

Disclaimer: I am not responsible for anything bad that may occur with your device, but I will take all the credit you can give me if it works for you!
Finally, I would like to present first custom ROM for our device (Teclast T8)! It was ported by me from ASUS ZenPad 3S 10 Z500M and this firmware has lots of great features! It was tested for about a month before release, because I didn't want to share beta ROM with a lot of bugs/issues.
This version is only for flashing via TWRP! (it can be found here https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/twrp-root-custom-recovery-teclast-t8-t3892647)

Brilliant! Thank you Sword900 - GREAT JOB!
Thanks to the developer for this ROM and TWRP. It's a good device let down by lack of software support and removes all the Chinese native apps which I could not remove even with Titanium backup.
I was running TOS 2.0.1 but with a magisk patched boot image which I flashed a long time ago. This makes it simpler.
There are some issues with the TWRP but atleast I can update Magisk without having to patch the boot image and flash it every time.
The zip file in OP, the folder names have a comma after the number as pointed out earlier. Remove that before attempting any operations or you will face weird and wonderful behaviour.
Works like a charm !
I have problem with the sound. When i turn on the volume and play ssomething, i will hear annoying sound (ezzzzzz,,*%$)

I've just ported this ROM from another device with alike parameters (chipset, android os version, etc). There are lots of guides on the net which will help u. Another way is to find or make it manually kernel-source for your device, so u could compile firmwares on your own. But it requires appropriative knowledges in android development. Also u may take a closer look at GSI project as if your stock firmware is based on android 9.0.

Open Gapps broken?

I just tried to flash open gapps 6/4/2020 stock for version 9 arm64, after I wiped cache and dalvik and rebooted all my gapps were gone but google pay was showing. I could see all the others were installed looking in system apps though. Trying to run google pay produced an error, see attached. Play services version seems to be broken? Help?
Confirmed, definitely broken. Logs attached. If anyone finds anyone in the open gapps project that actually cares feel free to let them know but from my past experiences it looks like open gapps stock is now over for 9. Might try a larger package, I'll post here if I do and it solves the problem.
Update: The Super package has the same issue.
There are other GAPPS like Nik GAPPS.

Yes, but let's back up a step...
What LOS custom ROM do you have installed, for which you need GAPPS?
Just want to make sure we're all on the same page.
LOS-16 and LOS-17 need different GAPPS and of course stock firmware doesn't use GAPPS.

Of course stock uses gapps, unless you like wasting your storage to hold the updates and then having to re-update if you land up having to restore or do a factory reset, been doing it since Gingerbread and it works great, or it did, although the majority of updates can easily be moved to the system using Link2SD I have yet to find any realible means to move play services to the system without breaking things which is a major headache, gapps solves that issue and also allows me to choose which apps I want included in a rooted stock rom. The reality is that custom/non-stock ROMs are generally broken in one way or the other and more often than not it's just not something I'm willing to deal with, in addition there's useally too much junk included that I just have no need for and if I did I'd change my stock rooted ROM to fulfill that need. I've actually never seen a stock ROM that didn't use gapps. I'm perfectly happy with rooted and reasonably de-bloated stock and change things I feel are needed, for example adding in call recording, most custom ROMs would actually leave me doing more work to take things out and put things back in, like why take out the native sms, clock, calculator, calender, keyboard etc. they work, they are free and ad free, they are useally small and thus not really bloat and they are often hard to replace with similar function anywhere near their size.

No, you never flash custom ROM GAPPS on STOCK firmware. It already has built in GAPPS. GAPPS are usually only for LOS/AOSP custom ROM, not even stock based custom ROM. So there's your problem.
If you want to do it, go ahead, but I just know what I've been told by several devs.
When I read your question again, it seemed strange the way the wrote it, so that's why I wanted to clarify.

No my problem is that suddenly play services in Open Gapps does not work, worked fine until this flash. Open Gapps is just Gapps, all versions should be the same as released by Google, as stated I've been doing it since Gingerbread and the only issues it's ever caused is when Open Gapps is broken as mentioned in the first post and photos has also been broken for awhile now as it no longer runs in system/app so I install that from play store and move that myself with Link2SD which puts it in system/priv-app where it works. Not sure which question you are referring to, Open Gapps is broken currently and it's my understanding that all Gapps have to be removed to switch to any other and then there's the learning curve that will come with it. If I had the time I'd just create and maintain a package for just core that wouldn't touch the rest. That will likely become a necessity in the future at the rate things are going. So yes, after all these years I'll continue doing it since it's proven to work, assuming it ever gets fixed though I doubt it will as photos has yet to be fixed and that just requires a change in the install script.

How long have you owned the V30?
You'll need to factory reset the phone to remove the extraneous GAPPS you installed when stock firmware has GAPPS and different resolution versions of the apps.
You still haven't explained why you need gapps on stock firmware. Every V30 dev who creates a stock firmware ROM says do not install GAPPS.
From Aeron Li, the A.IS. and A.I.X. (stock firmware based ROM) dev, who says NOT to do what you are trying to do:
the bad thing is that he can flash/install mismatched gapps and that may make firmware work wrong, or even make safetynet issues and not working Gapps-related things

Boombox dev (another stock ROM) and JohnFawkes one of the devs who create the TWRP flashable zips has said not to flash GAPPS over stock firmware.
You're probably going to cause conflicts. But it's your phone.

I dunno never had any issues and flashed open gapps a few weeks ago, 20200513 to be exact on this phone, no issues. Actually it was explained in detail. Updates take up space, wiping data removes them and hence bandwidth and time is wasted. Moving updates into system saves space and bandwidth. Again I don't do anyone's ROMs I use stock and make the few changes I desire. The only real issue that requires it is moving play services to the system since everything else is movable using Link2SD.

install gapps on lineagego 18.1 for nexus 6 shamu

I installed lineagego 18.1. the rom did not include gppas, i tried different version gpps, after install from recovery, the apps do now show in system.
how to solve this ?
The recommended gapps is MindTheGapps.
Make sure you download the version for Android 11, Arm (not Arm64).
You should flash gapps right after flashing the rom, without a reboot in-between.
MindTheGapps is a small package that mostly provides the Play Store. You can then install other apps from the Store.
I just tried flash the file 2 times, when reboot into system, no appgs instlled, there is no error message during flash.
Maybe you need to wipe Data.
Otherwise, you'll need to describe precisely all the steps that you took. Since this works for other people, there is undoubtedly some little detail that you are doing differently.
