Hi!
Is there any way to calibrate Samsung GS2's AMOLED display colours to look like LCD display? I think LCD generates more natural tones than AMOLED. Is there any calibration app or tool to achieve such colours on AMOLED?
I noticed the difference when I transferred phone screenshots to my laptop (which has LCD) and also when I compared the notification shade tones (cyanogenmod 11/AOSP) with nexus 4/5 which have LCDs. S2s AMOLED screen shows browner and warmer shade for QS tiles whereas nexus LCD shows grey colour tiles. This is just one example; many other elements like keyboard, pop ups have this kind of difference.
I am sure there must be some way to calibrate AMOLED screen to look like LCD colours. Has anyone tried this before?
Sammy roms and some aosp/cm roms has this "movie mode" which makes colors alot more natural.
On sammy roms it's under display settings and in aosp/cm etc roms, which has device's "advanced options",it's under screen tab.
As for complete r/g/b,gamma,saturation etc calibration solution as some other phones has in kernels or so,there is no such developed for S2 as far as I know.
And you posted in wrong section, ask mods to move it to Q/A

Thanks to @crachel for moving this thread to the right section.
I forgot to mention that I have tried playing with Advanced display options in settings menu of AOSP ROMS yet those options couldn't do the trick.
There is an option to do this. It's not a calibration, but a way to view your pictures with a correction profile on your smartphone.
I have one of these Spyder4 to calibrate the computer monitor for color reliable work. For this Spyder4 there is an app called SpyderGallery for Android. It's free. Once calibrated, you can view the photos of your gallery color-calibrated through this app...
Hey guys, recently my father got tired of ****ty MIUI and wanted something better for his Mi 5. Since it's not my phone, I cannot test various ROMs and kernels by clean flashing them.
I just need one ROM that I can switch to on his phone from MIUI.
It needs to be 100% stable (he is sick of bugs), needs to have great calling and bluetooth connection, and great battery life.
Please let me know if such ROM exists for Mi 5, and which one is it
(Do you guys face any issues with bluetooth speakers or taking calls via bluetooth in car?)
You can start with jdcteam's aosp. Has been really solid for me.

I've been using LineageOS with 0 problems so far. But it does take some time to set it up that way. For instance, you need to flash the MIUI camera to improve camera performance, and under display calibration adjust the RGB values to 90% to prevent image retention (a problem on MIUI too).
I can confirm that Bluetooth works fine, calling is clear and battery life is good but not better/worse than MIUI. I haven't tried taking calls over a car's Bluetooth.
You should also check out the Xiaomi.eu weekly MIUI 9 builds as they usually fix what Xiaomi broke in their MIUI builds and are actually supported by Xiaomi.

Thank you for the recommendations guys. Are you using the stock kernel or any custom kernel like BB kernel, Nagatobimaru etc?
What is your opinion about AOSPA and RR ?
AOSP Extended all the way. Using it from past 3 months.

Nagatobimaru kernel has terrible battery life for me (like 1h30m SOT even though I was initially excited to try it out because it incorporates EAS). I use LOS stock freq kernel, which removes the underclock of the 32GB Mi5 from 1.8GHz to 2.15GHz but is otherwise just the stock LOS kernel. On this kernel I get between 3-4h30m SOT.
AFAIK LOS is the only ROM with display calibration and all the others have no way to fix the severe image retention which is my main reason for sticking with it. If it doesn't bother you or affect your unit then I can highly recommend AEX which seems to be the ROM 90% of the devs are on.

What do you mean by the image retention issue? And what have you calibrated? As far as I understand, you have just tweaked the RGB values of the screen. Can you tell me your values? I think the same thing can be done via Kernel Adiutor if you are on a kernel that supports KCAL. AFAIK, stock LOS kernel doesn't have it but most ROMs and all custom kernels have it.
What about AOSP by JDC team, it appears very stable with EAS?

Does this problem have anything in common to the top edge of phone bleeding? Isnt that hardware's fault?

Yes, it's the same problem - I am unaware whether this is a software or hardware problem, but you can correct it 100% with software. It looks like lightbleed right around the border of the phone and you can see ghosting of previus apps around the corners (especially on a grey background). It's easy to fix in LineageOS, but I've had trouble in every other ROM I tried so far.

Its not ghosting its more like a radiant, something like a glow that increase and decrase...

It looks light an orange tinted lightbleed right around the borders of the display and some ghosting of previous apps are overlayed on the current app (especially visible on grey backgrounds). Check the attached image to see what mean, and this is only about 50% of how bad it can get if you don't adjust for it.
Yes I just tweaked the RGB values to 90% (anything more and you can still notice the effect).
I tried using Kernel Adiutor to fix this problem to no avail, using different ROM and kernel combinations. I never checked if the kernel supports KCAL specifically though.
It's been too long since I used JDC's ROM, but if I remember correctly it was stable and fast but lacked essential features at the time (music playback controls, lockscreen torch, display calibration settings). Their Oreo ROM is far ahead of Lineage 15 in in terms of stability though, not that it's DD ready.

Woah thanks for sharing this man, I didn't know about this, can you please share the screenshot of the settings you have made?
I have the same issue and I can't decide which ROM to flash. MIUI 8 is too laggy, MIUI 9 is faster but all apps crash randomly. I will unlock my phone tomorrow (after the stupid 72 hours waiting period) and I am hoping that this discussion will help us decide. Most probably it will be a choice between Xiaomi.eu or LOS.

As someone who recently used both Xiaomi.eu and LOS14.1 I might be able to clear that up.
Xiaomi.eu MIUI9 build is almost identical to MIUI 8. There are a few minor tweaks to the UI such as the task switcher which is now more immersive and the new icon pack. Settings are now more bundled together and ROM/System info is graphically displayed. Split screen multitasking seems to be the only new feature. I haven't experienced a single app crash, but the system animation speed was set way to fast by default and transition animations show tearing each time you switch apps. In short, it's fast but not smooth.
I switched back to LOS quite quickly. The only feature MIUI has that LOS doesn't is Dual Apps, and since I don't use that the choice was very simple. LOS is much smoother and faster, with minimal features on top of AOSP. I enjoy the additions, it doesn't feel bloated or barebones.
If you are going to use LOS, I recommend doing the following:
-If you have a 32GB Mi5, flash the LOS stock freq kernel
-Set the display calibration as per my previous posts
-Activate touch home button, always on fingerprint unlock
-Install Magisk
-Flash MIUI camera Magisk module + OISprop-Magisk
-Flash iYTBP Magisk module
-Flash unified hosts Adblock Magisk module (make sure to select systemless hosts in Magisk settings)
-Install Google camera HDR+
-Use Nova (paid) or Lawnchair (free) as the launcher
That should get you going and solve most if not all annoyances coming from MIUI. You'd be amazed with the quality of Google Camera HDR+! Just check the attached samples (they are all compressed due to Xda but you'll get the point).

I have the 32 GB version and I already purchased Nova Launcher and use no matter what. I will have to find the addons you mentioned as I have no idea what they do. It's the first time I install a custom ROM on my MI 5. One final question, do you have any thoughts on AOSP Extended?

I can add all the files you need to a dropbox folder and share the link if that would be easier? I find that the Mi5 is super easy to modify, you shouldn't worry too much. I'll add the firmware you need and GAPPS if that would help you transition.
Yes, AEX is a great ROM with many features. Most Devs seem to be on it (going by their discussions). I haven't found a way to fix my LCD issues on AEX yet, which is the main reason for not using it currently.

You need to run the apk after you flashed the magisk module and rebooted your phone to calibrate the OIS.
Okay.
I really enjoy recent 8.1.0 treble roms on vince.
(thank you! devs!)
but there is one thing that I really hate that, some of apps on store that doesn't support 18:9 display.
MIUI has forced full screen options, but AOSP based(or LOS based) Rom seems doesn't have it.
Is there any way to make it to full screen?
(Not hide Nav bar or such a thing, I need to make it to 18:9 like MIUI does)
AOSP O doesn't have any options for optimize fullscreen apps on 18:9 screens yet. On further AOSP versions (starting with P) we can expect this kind of options
All AOSP-based 8.1 ROMs that I tried offered a forced fullscreen option. Just look for it in the settings. (On OmniROM it's found in the OmniGears settings menu, on others I don't know by heart. But it is there, somewhere.)
Resurrection remix has an option for that but it's not per app like in miui, it's for all apps.
I've been lingering around the forum and lineage seems to have broken more things recently. Please don't attack me i just read the last few pages.
And cr droid is having signal spoof.
Best recommended rom if any?
Lineage would also work i just want to confirm
Well, for the best possible performance with fewest bugs I suggest MIUI developer ROM.
If you want a non-MIUI ROM, I can suggest Syberia OS, or Pixel Experience. They are also good.
Ultimately, "best custom ROM" is completely subjective because everyone has different usage habits and therefore will have different requirements.
Learn to flash, get comfortable flashing, and try all the ROMs.

Been flashing for like 2 years. Not used to tons and tons of pages to read through but thanks for the response. Will try syberia.
My requirements are minimum bugs and good battery. I barely play games.
Will try.
Thanks

PE has the least number of features among all custom roms i tried and miui. eg:
1. No call recording possible in any way.
2. No option to turn on torch with power button when screen off.
3. No advanced restart options.
4. No network speed meter.
5. No ability to change fonts on the fly.
MIUI exclusive features (no custom ROM has these):
6. Native app lock.
7. Flawless native long/scrolling screenshot capability.
Lineage OS 16 exclusive feature:
8. Privacy guard (this feature alone is enough to justify selecting LOS over others)
Not all roms have all of the above features but PE is the only one which doesnt have ANY of them.
MIUI has the maximum number of above features.
hands down for Lineage 16 and Nitrogen OS

Ouch - was pretty set on PE, but the lack of call recording, advanced restart and speed meter are big nonos.
My main concern with using the stock MIUI is privacy related - Xiaomi seems to collect far too much info.
PE is great if you want vanilla experience. If you like to tinker, tweak this and that, change the settings every two days then PE is not for you. Maybe NOS is the most stable right now.

I think performance wise experience would be same but Poco will have a development community advantage over Sony, Poco will have many roms, customisation, mods etc etc.. But media consumption , screen quality, camera would be much better on Sony. It's your call, which type of experience you want since you started using Sony recently.
Well I am also buying POCO this sale only because of SD845 and active development community, mine current device is Samsung G S7, I know I am gonna sacrifice on display and looks of the phone but thats okay.

Yeah development community is very big advantage for me with poco.as far as camera is concern my search says it is not big difference between them both(except super slow motion of Sony) . But yeah I like screen and built quality of Sony a lot, what I dislike about Sony beside development is its flash light which is very low.flash light is very important for me. I use it daily 3-4 times in a day. Thanks for your reply p

wow!
usually such questions are easy for me! if someone asks on xda that should he/she be switching from xyz to Poco or not ..
however the involvement of Sony adds ZING to this question!
keeping specs short comings of (storage/ram/screen) of xz2 when compared to Poco f1 ASIDE.............
Remember! Xperias are Apple (iphone) of the Android world! , Sony Xperia Stockrom is fine Tuned with hardware like soul to body, the simple intervace having so much to offer as your make any xperia your daily driver is I must sayd unique Japanese touch!
- you will feel happy on the hardware specs sheet of poco once its in your hands but
- you will MISS sony Xperia Stockrom UI experience big time!
- PocoF1's display with bad viewing angles, is NOTING infront of Sony's Triluminos display backed up with Bravia Engine! ,
- also Xz1 has Stereo speakers and poco f1 don't
-Xz2 is gorilla glass 5 front and back giving premiuim feeling!
- Camera of XZ2 is way better than poco f1
- xperia is more stable and can handle acidental bricking better than many devices
now poco f1 advantages
- cheaper device with SD845 no bumps curves or slippery finish so if you drop it and it breaks! it won't give your heart attack!
- poco f1 is very popular on xda and you will find many roms and kernels on and off Xda!
- rooting poco is piece of cake once boot is unlocked after 72 hours! however Rooting Sony Xperia XZ family is NOT as simple as that! YOu will have to make a deal with devil , once sony sends Unlock Key, and you use that key to boot unlock your XZ2, the Digital Rights Management Keys (DRM keys) in hidden Trim Area (TA) will be Washed/wiped and now many software will support only basic features, like sd card support will be reduced to 64gb / bluetooth 3.0 only/ camera slowmotion and other premium features wont work, fast charging wont work, bravia engine wont work, mega Bass and other sound effects won't work! ... there are long and serious work around and methods to EXTRACT TA partitions before unlocking the bootloader! but whether it works or not! only you can tell by trying these comlicated methods!
- Xz2 is not popular on xda hence i don't think so there are many custom roms or kernels! but then Sony Stockrom is itself is enough
- on custom rom! it never hangs! you can use dozen of social media apps and you will hardly notice any lags!
problems with POCO
- gosh touch issues are constantly bieng reported on various MIUI builds time to time!
- bad viewing angle makes your eyes water when you try to watch movies longer!
- modified vendor image has usb tethering error on 3g which makes system ui crashes and/or random reboots!
- I personaly found 4g connectivity issues many times on miui and or custom rom on various kernels! I am always rebooting or Toggling Airplane mode for poco to register itlef on the nearest tower with fresh ip! , where my Xperia works amazing on both 3g/4g

Does miui has automatic call recording,?
And which custom rom has these features
Automatic call recording
Button mapping ( button to kill apps, multi windows, switch recent app)
Screen shot in power button
Press and hold power button for torch (while screen is locked
These are the most important things for me please answer. Thanks
Also tell me how many of them can I find in miui?

for MIUI
since MIUI8 , the dial has automatic CALL recording (GSM calls ONLY)
- only Button MIRROR is available in miui ( recent app style is TILES only (not oreo Stack)
- swip three fingers down has screen shot gesture, ( I don't thinks so power button has such thing )
- pressing power button twice may trigger torch (you can set this guesture from miui gestures) (since miui 5)
about custom roms,
- call recorder is embeded in most of them (gsm only)
- button mapping is also available but not in every rom! you should try RR however navbar can be tweaked in nearly all roms! (havoc, crdroid, RR are the best)
- hardware keys can be configured on deep level! power menu can have many or few options as per your configuration
- you can configure torch on power button toggle (i am on havoc)

since you said its your FIRST expeirence with MIUI, I don't want to be a bummer or wana scare you off from poco! but........ since you are my type of person who give importance to certain types of customizations then I am affraid you will NOT like Miui very much!
why ???
- MIUI (atleast on poco) have no KEYBOARD switch key in navbar, if you have two or more keyboards installed (gboard and/or swiftkey) everytime you will have to swipe down the notification find SELECT INPUT METHOD to change /toggle between keyboards! where on stock android and in all custom roms (LOS based or CAF based) have this feature appears in either LEFT or RIGHT (or both) sides of navigation bar (you can customize)
- miui navbar stays WHITE most of the times and for me its annoying!
- miui recent screen has tiles method which is very annoying for me!
- you cannot disable any bloatware! you must ROOT your device and have third part app to do that!
-poco has modified vendor image ( i am gonna avoid details here) , so the impact is you must ditch MIUI kernel for poco and have custom kernel like FRANCO/ Twisted / OD / sphinx etc and use kernel manager app if you wana BOOST sound/volumes etc
- poco screen is unlike sony so i use custom kernel for KCAL to enrich vibrance
- notification method on miui is strange! , i noticed it puts LATEST msg from any one in the BOTTOM of that tile, for example if you recieve 3 msgs from 3 users on whatsapp apart few seconds each, stock android puts latest on top within WHATSSAPP tile, howeve miui puts it on bottom, so kept reading obsolete notification lines unless i became annoyed! , same case should be with emails too ( I don't remember that)
- miui has limited quick setting icons! i wanted to add toggle 3g/4g and usb tethering on Quick Setting Panel but i had to do that from netwrok settings always!
- due to modified vendor image, all custom roms have this BUG where if you tether 3g , the System ui craches or many com.android.phone starts crashing! so try to avoid usb tethering on 3g network!
nvm ... didnt c the previous comments
cheers!

for MIUI
since MIUI8 , the dial has automatic CALL recording (GSM calls ONLY)
- only Button MIRROR is available in miui ( recent app style is TILES only (not oreo Stack)

Wow wow wow :good:
Thanks for giving me your precious time and so much detailed answer
such a great pleasure to read your post.
This is also one of the reason why I prefer poco over Sony (community support)
After reading your post I think I should try miui first before installing any custom rom. Obviously I would root it first
Thanks again
