Disable text and phone roaming - Huawei Mate 20 Pro Questions & Answers

Is there a setting to temporarily disable incoming text and phone when roaming.
Can't find anything except disable data. Too expensive where I am and spam texts will cost me.
Probably need to pull the Sim or is there a disable for the Sim card?

You could temporarily disable messages app with ADB if you have access to a PC.

Data Roaming

Does Data Roaming include text messages, or just 'data' (like Gmail, internet, etc)?
I am traveling outside the country and my Data Roaming is checked off, I have no intention of paying AT&T their outrageous fees for data, but I also do NOT want to receive any text messages. How do I disable receiving unwanted text messages while abroad?
Thanks.
I believe you just uncheck the package data option and no data can be used.
I don't think disabling data will block incoming SMS. You would need to call AT&T and have them disable incoming texts, then re-enable when you return.

Most messaging apps have auto retrieve while roaming box to check or uncheck in main settings. Not sure what it does or doesn't do when left unchecked.

Anything that isn't a phone call is considered data. Text messages within your plan shouldn't count, but you never know once you leave the country.

I believe this is the case, in that my mother in law gets miniscule data usage reported on her bill on the random occasions she gets a SMS message. However, I believe SMS are carried strictly over the cellular voice network, so I don't think they will be blocked from coming in if the OP only blocks data. As I use GV for texts and don't have an SMS plan, I don't wanna pay to test this myself (yeah I'm a cheapskate, it's only 20 cents). Try shutting off packet data and have someone send you an SMS..

Thanks. Funny, I didn't even think about checking the settings.
The only setting that I believe refers to general messaging (as oppose to specific text or specific MMS) is Push Messages - Receive push messages from network. Obviously there is no explanation as to what it means
Any idea?
BTW - if I do find a 'market' messaging app which allows to shut it off when roaming, how do I completely disable messaging on the stock app? Do I need to remove it from the phone? I kind'a like the stock messaging app (probably because I don't know what I'm missing).
Installing a new messaging app should disable the stock one.

So I installed Handcent SMS (it has a settings for enabling/disabling Roaming auto retrieve and tested it, but when I checked the stock app my test messages (both in/out) were there. There was no notification of a new SMS, but once I opened the stock, the messages were there.
If you don't open it does it still count just because you received the notification?

Yes. It counts because of the traffic through the server, not whether you read it or not. Just like a phone call counts as a minute even if you don't answer it. Any use of the network counts.

There is no notification in the stock, I can see the message only if I open it.

blocking all incoming sms messages

Does anyone know how to block all incoming sms messages summarily?Aside of freezing the application itself via TB that is.I am travelling overseas and don't want to run a huge bill from the dozens of junk messages that keep coming inspite of DND activation.
Airplane mode?
or https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smsBlocker
The thing with call blockers is, the message still comes through it just doesn't show it to you, AFAIK. So if you've contacted your carrier to disable sms and are still getting SMS something is wrong.

[Q] Can't Switch Voicemail to Google Voice

Wheni trying to change my voicemail from "my carrier" to "google voice", it says something like it was unable to forward, do I want to forward anyway and I say yes but it just doesn't go through.
I deactivated google voicemail by logging in online and deactivating and deactivating but that didn't work. Please help. Thanks.

I had to call T-Mobile to activate Call Forwarding, which I had on previous phones, in outer to set Google Voice up properly.

If you are on the $30 prepaid T-Mo plan, it does not include call forwarding. Call T-Mo and tell them to disable your voicemail.
Just set up GV on the phone and ignore the error. It will use GV for voicemail, no forwarding required.
I'm on regular postpaid.
I had the same problem, I went to Google Voice on my computer removed all other phones and added the HTC One with a code they gave me. The problem with the app for the One is it won't setup forwarding for you so you have to go to call settings and set all calls to forward to your Google Voice number.

Stop call balance showing after making call

using google messages and getting a call balance popup after every call.any way to disable this

[SOLVED] Need a Phone App Where You Can Set Default SIM for Dual SIM (Samsung phone on Android 13)

Need a Phone App Where You Can Set Default SIM for Dual SIM (Samsung phone on Android 13)
When you Google for instructions on how to change default SIM for Calls or SMS, there appears that many Android Phones allow you set the default SIM separately for Calls and for SMS. Unfortunately it appears on at least US models of Samsung phones (at least my S23 Ultra running Android 13) you can just specify a default SIM for everything: calls/SMS/data. I want to use one SIM for data and one SIM for calls and SMS without having to remember to change the SIM in the phone or messaging app right before I make a call or send an SMS.
I've gotten around the SMS issue because my messaging app, Chomp SMS, has a DUAL SIM setting that will override the Android setting and default to whichever SIM you want to use when using Chomp SMS. (Of course this doesn't work for MMS as MMS uses data and it can't override the Android default SIM setting for data also so you can only send MMS using the SIM Android is set to us as default.)
So what I really need is a replacement phone app that has the same Dual SIM setting as Chomp SMS where I can specify when using the phone app what SIM to default to make calls with despite what the Androis O/S default SIM setting is set to so I don't have to remember to manually select the SIM in the phone app each time I make a call.

Found a solution for anyone running into this issue. You can download the app Multi SIM Selector and set the default SIM to be used and disable the manual pop-up. It also can allow you to select the SIM to use per call and then rembers to use that SIM when calling that number.
