Please help with Mate 20 Pro and 256GB NM card! - Huawei Mate 20 Pro Questions & Answers

I just purchased a Mate 20 Pro along with a 256GB NM card.
Only to find out that the card is "very, very slow"
I ran some tests with it using both a card reader, as well as in the phone, using an app called SD Card Speed Test Pro.
Which is showing read/write speeds of aproximately 60 MB/s read and 30MB/s write.
I tested the same card using CrystalDiskMark and found that it measured 89 MB/s read and 73MB/s write
Having done this, and in an attempt to narrow down the problem, I have tried the following;
Reset the phone to factory default
Formatted the card using PC
Formatted the card using the phone
Changed the size of the test files between 50mb and 1GB
Changed the number of simultaneous file access(r/w threads to) from 1 to 3
Turning-on high performance mode on the phone
None of which have made a difference.
Having said that, could anyone help confirm how there own Mate 20 Pro's perform using the same benchmark tool?

Huawei NM card specs say 90 MB/s read speed.

87MB/s write
83MB/s read
It's what I've got with sd card speed test pro with nm 128gb (specs 90MB/s)
Where did you bought your nm 256 ?

Can you share your settings for the test?
I purchased it from Aliexpress, it came with a scratch confirmation code of authenticity that was verified against Huawei's website.
I took photo's and sent them in to Huawei's support - they confirmed it was legitimate
And so it would appear something is wrong with the card itself.

No setting at all. Card is just insert

Sorry I meant to say, what settings in the software "SD Card Test Pro"
Internal SD Card
File size to read/write (in MB):
Removable SD Card
File size to read/write (in MB):
Number of file(s) read/write concurrently(1...10)
[ ] use max free space as file size if available

Default settings, i've just hit start

Is it possible to convert the SD card same merge with the internal memory of the phone to 1 memory in the phone?

[Q] Micro SD cards

Hi guys
I'm looking to buy a Micro sd card, samsung 32GB, class 10
So my questions are:
1- If someone already using sd card just like this one, tell me is it working fine with your android device?
2- Do you think that patriot or some other manufacturer cards are better then samsung?
3- Does your phone in some cases really feals faster with an sd card with bigger class number ( does reading speed of your card effect phone's speed? )
4- I heard that class 6 ( 6 MBps ) is more than enough for android devices, and also that some class 10 cards slow down a device, is it true?
5- Will i ever have enough memory on my phone
I know that there are the same threads on forum somewhere, but i need answers quickly and thats why im opening this one..

1. It works fine.
2. It just user preference. Their both great.
3. Reading and writing to the SD card will be faster. It won't affect phone speed unless your device is using certain mods such as swaps, int.ext. sd swaps, etc. or you have apps on your SD card.
4. While class 6 may be quite fast for a device, there is no way a class 10 could be slower.
5. That's up to you .
tnx Theonew
if i understood it well, an app called swapper 2 can allow device to use some memory from partitioned sd card like a ram memory and provide it a slightly better multitasking, and speed.. ?
And i have read that it can also affect an sd card's life..
So, is it worth it?

Yes, swapping can degrade the life of the SD card but it is worth it if your device is a low-end one (and slow). It will assist in stuff like gaming, etc.
No, I really don't think its worth it. It really affects the cards life and does not really add much ram, even for slow phones...

An additional 256mb is quite a lot compared to 192mb (total).
Quick benchmark of Samsung SD card class 10 in the ASUS Transformer TF101.
Code:
[email protected]:/home/kuisma# hdparm -t /dev/block/mmcblk1p2
/dev/block/mmcblk1p2:
Timing buffered disk reads: 60 MB in 3.09 seconds = 19.43 MB/sec
Reference, the internal nand flash (/data partition):
Code:
[email protected]:/home/kuisma# hdparm -t /dev/block/mmcblk0p7
/dev/block/mmcblk0p7:
Timing buffered disk reads: 52 MB in 3.10 seconds = 16.79 MB/sec
If comparing read vs write, large blocks vs small, sequential vs random etc, the SD Cards wins a few times, the internal flash a few. It's more or less a draw. I would say this SD card got "good enough" performance, although far from SSD performance.
good enough for smartphone
are you talking about solid state disk?

"SSD" was referring to "solid state disk", yes.

Unbelievably slow sdcard write speed!!!

the SD card I have is called SanDisk ultra 64gb class 10.
The first time I inserted into the phone, it ask to be formatted.
after a few weeks and almost filling it up full, I noticed that saving stuff on it is extremely slow.
I ran benchmark to confirm my suspicion

Ok so let me get this straight, the test file you are using is about 144MB and the only space you have left on your card is 194MB? Have you tried deleting a few files then running the test again?
Are you having any other problems. I know the phone specs says it only supports up to 32gb MicroSDHD card. The one you are using is a MicroSDXD card. I was thinking about getting one of those off amazon but there were alot of reviews from people with android phones that said it worked initially but then had all kinds of errors and problems after running the card for awhile. How long have you been using yours?
use the app SD TOOLS.. run that app and see what u get for a score...
INMHO this issue is coming from sdcard cluster size. i own a htc hero and a adata 8gb class6 sdcard.
usually ,because i use ext partition, i formatted sdcard under recovery (amonra or cm) and the cluster size is 4k . in this condition the write speed is arround 1MB/s .
studying this issue and after some digging in android i found that default cluster size is 68k ??? .... anyway using any OS or cmd line in a computer and formating with 64k cluster size will give best results regarding sdcard write speed .
with 64k cluster size i get 8-10 MB/s ....
i think the issue is coming because recovery's format the card with 4k cluster size
at least this is happen in my case with htc hero recovery's
so , just set cluster at 64k and it will work (i hope )

@jauger ,
can you tell me what utility use for testing sdcard speed: sd tools, sdcard speed test , A1 SD bench, sdcard tester ?
sd tools give me amazing results ... outside of my sdcard class 6 range
1 SD bench is in testing stage for me
sdcard tester require adobe air and for my device generation i think is too much hassle to make it run and even if i make it run can give poor results
sdcard speed test even if is discontinued it is very close to reality and real behaviour of my sdcard
PS: regarding sdcard speed test, it would be nice to post test results only at first run of app because a 2nd test it will give higher troughput from obvious reasons

[Q] Is there an IO limit for Micro SDs?

Previously, I tried to use an Adata class 10 32GB micro SD and mounts2sd to work around the small data partition problem.
It might be the slowness of that card (pasted the benchmark by Crystaldiskmark), my Evo 3D starts to lag that I have to move the application data back to the data partition of the phone's eMMC. The read write speed using A1 SD Tool is 19.33MB/s and 10.19MB/s.
I bought another Sandisk Ultra 64GB micro SD and benchmarked it using Crystaldiskmark and A1 SD Tool. The read speed using Crystaldiskmark is above 40MB/s, but the read speed tested using A1 SD Tool is 20.50MB/s. The write speed tested using A1 SD Tools is 9.17MB/s, which is even lower than the original card.
I would like to get a micro SD, maybe even a Sandisk Extreme Plus, but I am afraid that there is an IO limit on the micro SD card slot, which is a hardware limitation.
Any pointers? Thanks!

What is the Maximum Read/Write speed when using Micro SD Card with Xperia Z2?

Hi.
I have a Sony Xperia Z2 with lollipop. The device is not rooted. I was using a sony 32GB Class 10 U1 micro SD card (SR-32UYA/TQ1). It is rated at 40MB/s read speed. The write speed is not mentioned. When I tested it with A1 SD bench I was getting a read speed of around 33MB/s and a write speed of around 15MB/s.
I just upgraded to a Samsung PRO 64GB Class 10 U3 Micro SD card. The Read speed is 90MB/s. The write speed is 80MB/s. When I tested it using A1 SD Bench i was getting read speeds of around 42MB/s and write speeds of around 40MB/s. This is half the advertised speed. Is this what I should expect from this kind of card? And what is the max read/write speed that the Xperia Z2 can handle? Thanks.
Its more of a device configuration thing
My Sandisk Sdcard is rated for 32mb/s but i get 50-60 because of the file system type, i/o scheduler and buffer cache sizes
R/w speeds have a bunch of factors and usually "rated speed" is A maximum of instead of what a user would ever see
Right! You will get those values when you put card into a card reader with USB 3.0 support. Beside the setting of IO scheduler and read ahead cache can effects 10-20% benchmark scores.
Hi, so what can u advise and tips when buying sd card. Thanks.

Hello!
As today, in 2018, a A1 rated micro SD Card is worth to use with the Xperia Z2?
Thank you!

SD card - are R/W speeds really so bad?

Hi,
I'm considering a purchase or Xperia X, but in one review (notebookcheck.net) they found very poor read/write speeds of external microSD card (only 17MB/s read and 13MB/s write - both are sequential). Have you tested it and are the speeds really so horrible? Thx.
it depends on the quality of your actual SD card being used. Currently using the Samsung Evo+ 64GB SD and I get over 50MB/s speed.
Thank you for your reaction. 50MB/s in Xperia X sounds promising . In the review (notebookcheck.net) they used Toshiba Exceria Pro M401 (very good SD card - R90/W80). Maybe compatibility problem between Xperia X and Toshiba Exceria. And your 50MB/s is read or write, or both?

With the same SD I get 30 mb/S read and 20 write. Empty and freshly formatted

Thank you, Invicta. Your speeds are not spectacular, but I think they are sufficient.
write speeds are ok, read on the other hand is on the low side i think.
So finally I bought Xperia X and here is my experience: Sandisk Extreme 64 GB - R/W 30/30 MB/s. Speed is not the best but sufficient for me. I also tested Samsung Evo+ 32 GB, speed is lower than Sandisk. (27R/20W).

I get ~50MB/s read and ~30MB/s write. Don't know if it is in the variable range of the product but 20MB/s difference over 50MB/s is alot
