Ongoing Uninstalled App Usage - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
I have an LG G4 and just got a notice that we're low on mobile data... We mainly use wifi so this piqued my interest enough to dog into my data usage. Wouldn't be the first time I accidentally turned off wifi or something.
I see that 'uninstalled apps' were using over 5 GB this billing period over mobile and over 26 GB over wifi! Going back this seems to be consistent for at least the last three cycles. The data usage is steady thoroughout the month, no spikes. Also, I don't use any apps that would chew through this much data, not even close. I use my phone for work emails, news reading and a hour of YouTube here and there (which is ALWAYS on wifi).
I thought maybe I uninstalled something that I totally forgot about this month, but the fact that it's ocntued for at least 3 months and the usage is so steady it really worries me.
I've looked everywhere I can think of and I can't seem to find anyone else with this problem... I'm hoping the brains at XDA forums can shed some light.
Please help!

How many here have their phone using 3g constantly, and what kind of battery life?

I bought my phone cash, thinking that if I did I wouldn't have to get the 25 dollar per month internet, but the guy who I was dealing with on the phone trying to get the basic internet working was talking smack about "Why would someone NOT want 3g on their smartphone?!"
So I ask you guys, do you leave 3g on constantly, why or why not, and if you do what kind of battery life do you get? The 10 dollar internet never worked for me, and I rarely use 3g because of battery drain, just for tethering or big files, though I seem to have wifi around half the time anyways. EDIT: Also, what are you using, stock 2.1, 2.2, or a custom rom, and if a rom which one?
Personally I think the edge service is fast enough that I haven't really cared too much, I just wouldn't mind drawing on some other opinions and thoughts. Maybe I am one of the few smartphone owners who doesn't constantly play with my phone, but if I did I would want the battery to last long enough to play with it..
Edit:
Oh, and in advance, I rarely post here so I don't know if questions like this provoke flame wars or end up through the butterfly effect making small children in india cry themselves to sleep at night.. either way, no flaming please, just curious, thought it may be interesting, and thought it would be a fun thread
I use 3g 100% of the time, battery rocks. Usually 2 days to a charge, 1 if HEAVY use. Been over a day of good use, on 3g, and still at 33.
EDGE is probly fast enough but I get antsy when I have to wait for anything so that's why I use 3g.

I have never once turned my 3g off. I average 1 day 6 hours of battery with moderate use, and have had nearly two days a few times.

I always have my 3g on unless i'm some where where i have no signal. It's one of the key feature of the phone why turn it off?
I get any where from 15 to 25 hours depending on how heavily i use my phone.
Alot of the Vibrant community who have rooted devices and have settled into what will and wont kill your battery average between 15 hours to a full day plus. I myself see with 3g on about 15-17 hours.
Sexy Vibrant featuring Nero V3 w/Voodoo, and FFC installed
3G majority of the time (reception is what changes it to Edge) I get 12-14h battery life with "average" use (corp email set to pull every 30min reading emails ect)
Honestly, the only time I find that the network is draining the battery is when it is constantly trying to switch from "3G" to "Edge" or "Wifi" and back in bad coverage areas. If it's a reliable connection then it shouldn't really tax battery usage when idle.
About 16 hours with about 2-3 hour screen on time.. Several emails syncing plus facebook and twitter.. 100% hpsa coverage

I'm always on edge when normal usage. I really have a bad 3g reception at my place plus my vibrant have a hardware defect just like the iphone 4.

I have noticed that also, alot of my job relies on me moving through very dense facilities and around the county. I lose a significant amount (7-10% an hour driving) where at home it sits 3-6% an hour drain.
I do not have a data plan like OP.
I have Wi-Fi in 80% of the places and time my phone is on. I keep the wi-fi on auto-connect and on all the time. Moderate to heavy usage-12-18 hours battery life.
Hmm, interesting replies and statistics so far, when I was in Daytona I think that I had significant drain because the 3g coverage was spotty at best, but I haven't tried keeping it on since I moved to jacksonville, where the coverage should be much better.
Question I wish I had asked in the original post, are you stock, if so 2.1 or 2.2, or do you use a rom, and if so which one? The guys claiming over 24 hours versus people getting 17.. quite a discrepancy, and I will bet this has something to do with it(besides just amount of use).
I am using 2.2 bionix V rom, and I get 18+ hours of use out of it on my heavier use days, though I think some corrupt files on my phone have gotten my mediaserver system process using tons of processor, killing my battery quicker. I am going to go ahead and keep it on 3g for a few days, and see what kind of difference it makes. Thanks for the feedback.
Tmobile's 3g coverage in jacksonville is pretty good.Heck I get almost 4g speeds here

Cant figure out data usage

I got my Note three days ago and I'm at 600Mb data usage.
Of course I've been setting it up but decided to look at the usage.
All the big Mb listings are "Sent"
They all look like this
03/27 08:28 PM pta Internet/MEdia Net Sent 128291KB
That particular one was right when I got the phone.
Last night there was one at 11:33pm for 24mB
I was asleep.....but had the phone charging so Data was turned on....
Anything 'received' is small. So I don't understand why apps arent showing up....
I checked mail, etc and there is nothing that warrants a 24Mb upload that I can tell.
Any ideas? How could I find out within my phone?
Thanks
One of your gapps could have updated or the yellow pages app. Tgats what happened to me i had mine for 3 days as well
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
That's pretty scary - especially w/ the throttling cap looming! If you find out what is going on, please share.
The data usage report doesn't happen to be in a different time-zone, does it? (11:33p actually being your 9:33p or something)
Ok just uninstalled yellow pages.
Even if the time is off I haven't sent anything that big.
Actually nothing but texts, text emails and maybe one pic.
That 126mb is ridiculous. I can understand some syncing at first startup but that much????
I would also expect a lot more as 'receive' because i had to download all my apps.
I know last night I downloaded one of the s pen apps that was 30mb and that doesn't show up.
Does 'sent' really mean 'receive' as most of us would perceive?
But that was many hours before that date stamp. BTW the texts I got match up with the times posted so it's not off.
The only thing 'good' about this is they put me on this month's cycle. So I have 3gb til sunday
Hence the reason I downloaded that 30mb app through LTE (which by the way showed no status, it was just bam! ----installing! LOVE IT)
The reason I got to looking was I was curious about how much data speedtest.net uses each time. Attached is the one from this morning (Beautiful!)
But it never showed up on my data usage.....
8o lucky haha

I went ahead and called....
It seems they aren't really sure about these things.
It took awhile and they still seem a bit foggy on how this works.
PTA is supposedly a generic input for LTE data usage.
I had to google that to find out, not the tech support person.
I asked why it says 'sent' and why it did it when I was asleep.
After talking to the manager, the best answer they gave me was that each 'session' will compile the data then once it's over send it up.
So 'sent' means what I downloaded...go figure.
I still thought it was excessive despite downloading apps etc.
I can't get back on my VZW account (they waste no time kicking you off) but I had checked and I was only using 2Gb/month consistently.
I downloaded a data tracker app and then downloaded a 30mb app from the market. It recorded that just fine.
I use Dolphin Browser HD and went to www.androidcentral.com which has all sorts of graphics. I have the user set to 'desktop' so it's the full version webpage, just like i had it on my tbolt. That page was 3Mb!! So I opened the stock browser and did the same thing....3Mb....
If browsing the internet chews this much I'm screwed. I think my phone might be measuring data strangely or I would have seen massive usage on VZW. I went back to check because I wanted to know if it was 20Gb instead of 2Gb but that's highly unlikely.
My next step is to have a friend who has the tbolt on VZW and LTE to do the same thing and see if it records 3Mb.
I don't want to be a slave to watching my data consumption......
If anyone that uses LTE could check their data usage it would be good to see if you get PTA as a line item with some high hits....
Similar situation. I got the Note just over a month ago. While on my Evo3D and Evo 4G, I never went over 2GB, even though I watched tons of youtube in HQ, tethered, and surfed a lot of internet. My first month with AT&T, I almost hit the 3GB cap within the first 2 weeks with pretty much the same useage(actually probably less useage). Not sure if I have a rogue app somewhere.
I had a friend on Tmobile 4G (sensation) do the same thing and his 1.5Mb to my 3Mb. I also had VZW LTE (tbolt) do the same and his was about 3Mb.
Now that's not a very good test actually. I guess I need to find a web page with an exact Mb size.
After downloading the data usage app I can see the main hogs. I watched a youtube video through Dolphin and it jumped 40Mb....
Just browsing through the market will gobble some up and of course downloading apps. The apps seem 1 for 1 meaning its the same size. I don't know if there is something else when streaming data or browsing data.
Anroid OS + others is also a main chunk
I was happy to see my email and texting apps don't use diddly squat....
I took a screenshot of the data use. this is just this afternoon and while I was working. The 'Web' is the default browser loading one page....
Basically, I should use wifi for downloading apps and watching videos....sucks.
I never worried about it on my Tbolt and was grandfathered unlimited but for whatever reason it didn't chew that kind of data up.
The whole reason I started looking was to see how much data the speedtest uses. Now I know. Each test is 19mb.so I guess I wont do those any more.....basically the 3gb plan means 100mb a day....
Do you guys send /receive mms at all? I think that counts but not sure
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA App
Well tracking usage from 1pm on I used 100Mb with my internet browser.
It just seems excessive.....I'm really wondering if there is an LTE calculation in there....
Just to come to XDA straight to the NOTE main forum, then this subforum and then to this thread is 1.5Mb
I like to constantly poke in to my favorite websites throughout the day. Now this is going to make me hesitant and that ruins the experience.
I'll defintely only download files and apps via wifi or computer.
Opera mini compresses the data on their side before it gets to the phone, reducing data consumption on your plan.
I think it's Opera mini...you have to read the descriptions of their two browsers to make sure.

Battery life...WTF google

My phone started dieing overnight and I was really confused because I could've sworn I had a lot of like left when I went to bed. So I did a test tonight...
Charged to 100% at 10:30pm
All background application closed, ram cleared
Wifi and GPS off
Results: after 8.5 hours of doing nothing, I lost over 75% battery.
Screenshots are below...WTF is happening with my phone?
Looks like something is keeping it from deep sleep. Download cpuspy and see if that is the case. When you click on phone stand by what does it say?

Looks like Google talk is keeping it awake. Never used GT before so not sure if that is normal. I am having similar (but not as drastic) with ms exchange keeping mine in awake state. I am using ics alpha 2 Rom and did not have this issue on stock GB. What Rom are you using?

It also looks like your cell signal isn't all that great so it's constantly pinging. Not sure about that though. Do you need data all the time? I use 2x battery so it severs data. Saves a **** ton of battery life.

I noticed the Google Talk but I never use it, and it's installed on my phone, but I can find a way to uninstall it anywhere. It also doesn't give me an option to log out either.
Oh and I'm running the ICS alpha 2 ROM. I don't recall having this problem with GB.
I use the ICS -1 Click Odin leak (In progress of getting a better ICS loaded) but I have noticed that I run into a lot of Battery life problems when I am sleeping... If I leave my phone unplugged overnight it always dies, I have to charge it. It's weird... Because I can be on it all day with amazing Battery life, then it just dies over night with a full charge of not even being in use...
I probably need to run some analytics to see what is killing it in the first place... I always force close my apps though...
This happens on any OS, GB, or ICS...

I had the same problem which is why I went back to GB. Remember this is an ATT leak of an unfinished ROM. they have all sorts of unfinished code and debugging running that it's bound to cause these issues.

BINGO!!! Just checked some screen capture from battery stats from GB and my cell strength was no ways near as bad as it is on ICS. Need to see if any fixes are out there. It almost all tan for signal strength on ICS vs all green in GB. Same locales for both samples.
by the way, i was getting between 1 day to 1.5 days on rooted GB oc'd to 1.84 with 4 hours screen time. Did not ever see exchange using any noticeable % of battery. Now getting 15 hours with 2 hours screen time and exchange using 6% of the battery. Not going back yet because the pro's out weigh the con's.

Well that would suck if the ICS radio is a step backwards over the GB radio....

Yep, it seems like the partial wakelocks are getting you.
It will go into deep sleep but then go up to 384 off and on.
Gtalk looks like the biggest culprit.
Like I said if data is off it shouldn't have wakelocks.
Another test you could do tonight is the exact same but put it in airplane mode.
It shouldn't budge much.....
I managed to find a way to log out of google talk, so I'll test it under the same conditions tonight to see if that changes anything.
Airplane mode overnight is not an option for me since I need cell service in case of emergency calls. Generally, I do notice slightly worse reception of the previous GB ROM, so the modem might be questionable.

Understood about the calls. You can get calls and texts without data though. That's why I was recommending 2x battery which is like juice defender I think. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.a0soft.gphone.aDataOnOff&hl=en
I realized I really don't need data unless I 'want' data. I do push my emails but they won't push until I turn on data. Saves a lot of battery, especially when on LTE.....
It works well for me because you can set a delay for the data. So you can turn on your screen (not unlock) and see if you got any new texts. If not, put it back in my pocket. All without data coming on. I do these quick checks all time...
Then there is a delay time you can set after you unlock.
I have mine set to 3 min. If I do get a text, I will unlock, read it and maybe respond quickly, then put it back in my pocket. As long as its not mms that's all done without data.
If I need to get data prior to the 3min there is a notification to connect the data.
I'm coming from the thunderbolt and we had to REALLY find all the tricks to save battery life. As it given to us by HTC and Verizon it was unacceptable.
At any rate, sorry for the wind there. If you're wondering, I have no association with 2X battery. I just like to spread the word when I find an app that is useful and has helped me out.

I used to use juice defender but a couple things were a deal breaker for me:
1) First was that it rendered Cerberus almost completely useless. I could not get the phone to connect using the web interface at cerberusapp.com since the phone had no data with the screen off. Sure I could have used the SMS method of activation, but I don't have another phone to text from and it just isn't as flexible as the website.
2) Every time I unlocked the phone, I had to wait 10+ seconds for data to fully reconnect before I can start using stuff. When I unlock the phone, it's usually to check something very quick, and if I'm stuck waiting, I'd rather suffer the battery loss than to wait a bunch of times.
I suspect every battery saver app has this issue, and they can probably be configured to work to my needs, but I just don't have the time and patience to be tinkering with stuff like that.

JD Ultimate has an option that allows foreground apps to force enable/disable data, which is an easy thing to set. Also, my experience with JD is that data reconnects as soon as I unlock the phone and before I can launch an app. Battery saver apps are definitely frustrating, but I find that the correct settings fix 95% of the annoyances.
I hear ya on the time thing. Just thought I'd over up that tidbit. I don't seem to have much of a delay. 2x does allow for whitelisting apps you want to run like Pandora.

Yup, that's exactly why I don't want it. If I rarely/never use the app, I don't want it constantly connected wasting my battery and data. I wish there was an easy way to turn that off. I've been reading on Google and there were posts from 1-2 years ago that said signing out of gtalk doesn't help with the wakelock, so we shall see tonight when I test it again.

Actually, there is (sort of). Purchase an app called Autostarts on the market. Open it, wait for it to finish loading, hit the menu button, then tap the 'group by application' option.
Then, scroll thru the list to Google Talk and tap it. This will expand a bunch of different conditions that Google Talk automatically starts under. Disabling every condition will cause the app to never automatically start in the background (but the app will still launch if you manually launch it). Since I dont currently have root, I cant see what the conditions are, but you might need to leave one or two enabled if you need to receive incoming calls.
Reboot your phone after making any changes.
I should also mention that if you manually launch the app, you need to remember to manually close the app if this is what you assume is causing the battery drain.
If nothing else, you can use Autostarts to help determine if Gtalk is what is causing the issue by just disabling everything for it and watching battery drain rate.
I also use another app called Battery Widget Pro by 3c which will tell you everything about the battery and what exactly is causing it to drain.
What I would do is disable everything unless it looks like its something for receiving calls (if you need to receive calls that is) and reboot the phone, then test it by using another phone to call your Google # and make sure it works.
The point is tho to disable everything you can. I personally use Autostarts to disable every user app that doesnt either have a widget or a scheduled process that needs to run in the background to perform its task. Helps a crap ton with battery life.
So looks like signing out of google talk did not help anything looking at more detail in the better battery stats it might be google maps that's causing all the wakeups

How big data plan is enough for the s3? (generally)

Hey,
So I'm actually so excited, because i am about the get the s3..
But theres one more thing i want to find about before jumping in. Im going to get it on a contract and i need some tips on the bundle i should be looking for. How much data usage is going to be enough for me? Im going to use wifi like 90% of the time, but im just curious of how much data would the s3 use. Like browsing facebook, twitter, xda-forums, youtube maybe? perhaps gps now and then? How much data do these use? I dont want to do anything major over 3G just the most common surfs really.
Would 200 or 500Mb be enough?
i wouldn't go less than 500mb. You wouldn't want to be constantly looking at your data usage worrying that you go over.
Hi,
Route66 navigation software uses around 50mb of data for a 7 hours trip.
On holidays, I have used maybe 2.5Gb of data on 2 weeks. But I was tethering and streamed a lot from my home.
On normal use (email, browsing, a little play, updating greader), I think it's around 15-20mb a day.
If u got wifi at home and seldom go out then 500mb is enough for u.
If not 2Gb is enuf.

I got 'All You Can Eat' data plan with 3 UK, reading the small print, their fair use policy is about 100GB a month :good:
From the 3 UK website - 'Even if you used your phone for every minute of every day you could only possibly use, subject to traffic management requirements and policy, up to 1000GB each month. So in a sense, there is a data limit of up to 1000GB, which is based on what you can physically use.'
Just for the doubters out there.

Question Anyone with high Mobile Network standby battery drain

I used to have the classic Mobile Network standby battery drain issue, until I flashed CalyxOS.
I left my phone with 100% battery before I went to bed last night and woke up this morning 8 hours later with no drain of any kind at all.
Might be an option for anyone else with the same issue.
Interesting. So that confirms it's a software issue and not hardware. Which is a relief. It means Google can fix it via OTA update. Hopefully enough people reported it that Google took notice. i am on chat with google now and they want me to factory reset. I was hoping to avoid that
wait just a question. you said 8 hours.those stats don't update for 24 hours. So you got 16 more hours to go till you know if the issue is fixed. that is why there are no stats at all on your screenshot. It just says battery data isn't available right now
Edit: ok I was wrong about that because I factory reset my phone (on the advise of Google support) and it's been 7 hours and I can see stats. But yes not losing anything In 8 hours is suspicious. I mean it could happen I guess my pixel 4xl got fantastic battery life and apparently mine was the only 4xl that got good battery life because everyone else hated the 4xl because of battery life. Anyway with my 4xl I would lose 1 or 2 percent overnight same with my 1,2,3a and 5. It's only the 6 that this is happening too. I just hope that it can be fixed with an software update.
8 hours with no drain is suspicious if you are not in Airplane mode. The clock, the weather app, email client, a bunch of things at least asks back for update preiodically, so it seems odd.

He's pushing this OS all over the place, not sure why. Most people do not want to bl unlock, wipe their devices and gamble with a new OS that probably doesn't work with Google Pay. And I agree 8 hours with no drain? Not likely although I did have 0.4% / hour one night. Usual is around 0.8 - 1.0 / hour.

Calyx doesn't do anything really in the background. It's de-Googled and has background processes limited or killed altogether. It is certainly possible to get this low idle drain considering OP is on wifi with what looks to be a very strong mobile network signal so the inefficient Exynos modem isn't draining it.
The downside of course is that a bunch of stuff doesn't work right on Calyx because there are no Play Services. You can't even access the stuff you bought IAP for...
I see. I don't say that it is bad. limiting or killing processes in deep sleep would hurt the notifications too, right? It is an interesting OS, but I would join to the others. I need my apps in a convenient way. I did modding in the past but now I appreciate phones that just work when I take them out from the box.

Where am I pushing anything? I'm sorry that I'm excited I've managed to solve a problem and want to share it with others where it could help. But hey, you're welcome to keep scrolling if my posts bother you that much.
For anyone else who might be interested, I took my phone off charge this morning and have been using it for the last 5 hours receiving Whatsapp messages, emails, calendar notifications, Doorbell/CCTV notifications and doing light internet browsing and I've lost 2% battery so far.

You might have "solved" one problem but introduced countless others. If you're really that excited then give all the info not just overnight battery drain and be a little more forthcoming about the rom. I mean in reality if I turn off all network activity and put it into airplane mode I'd get the same results and probably even better. And then there's your thread of ...Why isn't everyone running CalyxOS? Maybe one thread would have been enough instead of cross posting the Pro and the P6. Anyway, I do believe you have gotten enough feedback so people know the pitfalls of the rom and the supposed benefits of longer battery life.

I turned nothing off. If I had I would have said so. What's the point in posting my findings then? I would be useless wouldn't it? I don't have time to play games and lead people around the bush. I'm not 12 years old anymore.
So just to satisfy your curiosity, I use my phone in exactly the same way I have always used it. Bluetooth off, Wifi and mobile data on, location on when I need it but off at the moment. All my apps work just the same as before including my banking app. The only thing I don't use now is Google Pay, and two of my apps with in app purchases are not registered. Apart from that it is exactly how it was before.

Mobile network standby of 2 minutes with 5 hours off the charger suggests airplane mode was in use.
I don't care how much stuff you turn off in the background, there is no way you're getting a 2% loss from 5 hours of usage unless you used the phone for less than 30 minutes in those 5 hours.

Ok crack on buddy. Lol
Suspicious, yes, but then again... I used to be able to run my old Moto G3 for two weeks on a single charge with just a bare-bones LOS, no gapps and nothing else in the background, so it doesn't seem THAT unreasonable.
