I am new to the site so hello to all.
I have a sprint LG V30 with android 8.0. I recently had the screen replaced as my fone fell out of my pocket, in the rain, then got ran over by a car. Yes it DID survive but had to replace the screen. Anyway, the proximity sensor no longer works so I turned it off. So the light sensor seems to control my always on display. When it's slightly dark, the A.O.D. turns off and wont come back on until i put it near a light or press the power button 3 times. My question: how do I make it so the A.O.D. always stays on?

Get the repair done right? LG will do it right.
Proximity sensor lets the phone know if it's just a dark room or if you've flipped the phone over on the desk, or you have a flip case and it's closed. If the latter two, then no need for the AOD to even be on.

I get that but, I want the AOD to stay on. So how do I disable the light sensor so the AOD will stay on?

I don't think you can, which is why my suggestion was to get it repaired correctly ("get the repair done right"). Whoever repaired it botched the job.

Ill start with saying that my english is veryy bad

I quess my light sensor on my hd2 is almost defect.

When i start a call (or got an incoming call) the screen turns black
(as its suppose to be when you hold it to your ear)
But it turns black all the time, no matter how i hold it.
So i did a quick test, i called a number, and took a very bright light (100w) just next to the sensor. and after that, it doenst turn black for the first time!
So the sensor isnt working correctly anymore?
It is since my telephone has gone back to the shop for a new screen.
Can i make it better with software? Cause it works.. But only with a very bright light.... Or do i need to get back to the shop?

try a soft reboot and then if needed a hard reboot/factory reset. don't forget to back up the phone first as it wipes the phone

Ive tried different roms, and even Android. Results are always the same!
That is an odd problem. Especially since the ambient light sensor is not what is used to black out the screen during calls. That would be the proximity sensor.
If you look very carefully just to the left of the speaker at the top of the phone you will see the proximity sensor. Do you have a case on your phone that may be blocking/interfering with this sensor? Do you hold your phone in a way that your fingers or hand may be close to this sensor?
Another thing to try is put the call on speaker phone, this should disable the proximity sensor and keep the screen on. If it does not then you may potentially have a hardware issue.
I haven't got something blocking the sensor. But because my screen was broken, they placed another one. (And since then it happend)
Ok, i did some tests..
I cleaned the screen very proper. And i was sure there was no spat of dust or whatever. so i called again.. And it worked properly!
But.. When i put my finger on the sensor.. (So its not 100% clean anymore) it turns black again. So its veeeeery sensitive..
When i turn on the speaker.. It doesnt turn black..
So conclusion:
It turns back way to fast. Only when the screen is 100% clean, and there is enough light in the room.. It works properly..
Aren't there any settings for windows or android to change the sensitivity? Cause this is very annoying..

Not that I'm aware of. It sounds like they didn't do a proper job of replacing the screen. The ammount of light in the room should have no impact on the screen turning on/off. Also, my screen is often quite filthy and I've never had that trip the proximity sensor. It is possible that the sensor was moved or misaligned during the repair.

I'm having issues with my screen not turning off at times and I think it has to do with Smart Stay. I'm not even looking at the screen and the screen would stay on. Last night I was playing around with my phone, I left the room, came back and my screen was still on. The other issue I have is when I'm reading a long email the screen would turn off. Is this a software issue or do I have a defective phone?
Forgot to mention, I have the Rogers version.

Your face has to be centered in the upper right hand camera. That is a little off centered. So turn your front facing camera on and center your face. That's where your face should be. It's not using your eyes but it's using facial recognition to stay on.
As for your screen not turning off... how long is your screen set out for?
Lastly, turn smart stay off and see if it does the same. That will let you know the real problem.
I have noticed this effect on my phone as well. Above my computer area, is a lamp, that is somewhat round. Every once and a while the smart stay will detect an object that it thinks is a head, however it is not. So the screen will stay on. Just move it. The smart stay does not work 100% in lower ambient light also. So if this screen off issue is occurring more often at night or in low light environments, that is fairly typical. Your phone is fine.

Ok, I turned on my front facing camera to center my face. I have to say that's an awkward way of holding the phone to make sure Smart Stay detects your eyes.
My screen is set to time out for 30 seconds.
I did turn off smart stay last night and my screen turned off. I know it's an issue with smart stay. But could it also be a front facing camera issue? It seems to take pictures okay though.

When making a phone call, the screen goes blank when putting next to my head, then remains blank when the phone is removed from the head area. Must hit the Home button to get the screen back. I have no case on my phone but a screen protector and screen protector isn't covering the sensor. I check the proximity sensor in call setting and it's turn on. Not sure what can be causing it not going back on. Any help would be appreciated.

I am having the same problem. I dont think that it is broken thought because I can make a call by bringing the phone to my head from a contacts page.
Did anyone figure this out yet? For those that are seeing the problem are you running stock rom, did you root or make any mods?
I see this issue as well, but was thinking it may be due to the spigen glass cover I have on, but I just checked my sensor reading and it appears to be reading things fine, it just wont turn the screen back on after. I am rooted on Stock, running nova prime as my launcher, not many other mods I can think of.

I cannot get my proximity sensor to work either! It is really ticking me off. I guess I will have to try get Verizon to give me a new one.
yea, I ended exchanging my phone since it was a broken proximity sensor. WIth my broken phone, if i squeeze the sensor for about 10 seconds putting pressure down and released, the proximity sensor will work for a few minutes. If you are able to exchange the phone, I would recommend to do so.

I would recommend you to test it.
Click on "Phone", you should have numbers on your screen now. Type in *#0*#, click "Sensor", now hover your hand over proximity sensor, if the screen goes green and/or phone starts to vibrate, your proximity sensor works. If it doesnt, i think your proximity sensor is broken.
I noted each time I make a call, the display immediately turned black. It auto turn black without me even taking up the hone up to my ears. I needed to press the power switch to have the display lit up again. Is this a proximity sensor defect ??

Yea I'm dealing with the same issue on my at&t model, it's definitely a proximity sensor issue. Also, I find that the proximity sensor functions relatively OK outside of the phone app when I'm on a call in terms of lighting of fading to black...I haven't found a fix yet, hopefully it's a software issue though somethings telling my it's not... Just another defect in a long line of LG phones as of late

I have a same issue but clean the proximity sensor and it will work. The proximity sensor is next to the speaker. Clean with your t-shirt or jeans.

I've cleaned it several times to no avail
I have noticed occasional "quirkiness" while in the phone app, but not to the point of requiring a battery pull. Example, connected via Bluetooth, while plugged to a charger in a call, no way to wake the phone without pulling the charger.

Thank you. Thank you. Your proposed solution works very well. Now no more this problem. Had never thought the sensor could be dirty or blocked over time. I had the phone only about 2 months
Problem update
Okay, I've found new info on the proximity sensor problem. Firstly, I noticed that my proximity sensor still works with the second screen, if I cover it up when my screen is off it goes black and comes back on when I remove my finger. Secondly, if I was on the phone but not actually in the phone app it would behave normally sometimes. Now today I found out that when I'm in the phone app, if I'm talking on the phone through the speaker the screen does not go black, as soon as I take it off speaker, the screen goes immediately blank. Still have not found a fix, but just more info that may help define what the actual problem is.
anyone have any update on this? this issue seems to be getting worse for me

Had same issue just happen on the AT&T LG Escape 2. (Yes I know its a year since this thread was started)
It was the proximity sensor but the "T-shirt wipe" method didn't work for me.
What I did realize there was some gunk on the sensor, and I used a cotton swab (Q-tip) with alcohol and rubbed it till it was visibly clear of gunk. Now it works fine again..

I'm pretty sure my S7e had the option to turn the screen completely off when in a pocket or face down, even when AOD was turned on. I can't find any way to do that on the S9. Even on auto brightness it stays on, very dimly. On manual brightness, it stays on at whatever brightness you've set. What's the point of having AOD use even a little bit of battery if you can't see the display at all?
Anyone found a way to shut AOD off in these circumstances?

I've been trying to solve this as well. It seems some models have different wording in the block touches option. My tmobile device says something like prevent touches while in a dark place, pocket. I've been told the wording for that option on other models is more like disable screen in dark places, pockets. I hope it gets changed in an update.

Actually it does not. What's weird is I swear it did when I first got the phone but it seems like an update broke it or something because it no longer does it.
Really hope a future update brings it back because I haven't found any settings that enable it.
Anyone figure this out?

What I've figured out is that it works 100% on my S9+.
And my wife's S9+.
And my daughter's S9+.
And my other daughter's S9+.
You may wish to review the settings on your device again.
I hope you find the missing configuration, because I can understand the frustration when something appears to not work as it should.
Having had a number of S7 phones that featured a stuck rotation-lock due to a borked accelerometer, and "glowing" screens while turned off due to bad display drivers, I would not discount the possibility that your device could be defective, if you have turned on the appropriate feature-set and the AOD still does not turn off when the proximity sensors are covered.

Nope. If I put it face down on a table or desk in a completely dark room, I can see the light from the screen reflecting off the surface. (My case lifts the screen slightly off the table.) And if I take it out of my pocket, I can see the AOD is very dim immediately after coming out, and then brightens after a split second.

Have you checked it in a totally dark room (say, a bathroom, at night, with the shade closed and the door closed)? Because that's when it becomes clear the screen is just very dim, not off. Also, if you set manual brightness on the AOD, instead of auto, it's very obvious that it stays on even when the phone is face down.
What do you consider the "appropriate feature set," because I've looked all through the settings and there is no setting for turning the screen off when in a pocket or face down.

I think I see where at least some of the misunderstanding is now.
What you describe is expected behavior in the dark/low-light scenario.
Note that the AOD turns off (if you've enabled "Block accidental touches" in the display settings) only if the >proximity< sensor detects that the phone is, well, in proximity to something - such as when it is face-down or in a pocket.
If not in proximity to something, what can be expected is that the illumination sensor will simply adjust the AOD brightness (if in the automatic mode) in response to the ambient light it detects - bright in bright light, and dim in low or no light. Just as you've described your experience.
Again, if your "Block accidental touches" feature is on, and the AOD isn't turning off when it is in proximity to an object (in a pocket, face-down, etc.) you may have a defect.

I don't have block accidental touches on but it does turn off when it's in my pocket or faced down. It might be just your device. It always turns off for me when it should.

Interesting. I was always under the belief that the setting was required in order to assure AOD would turn off in those situations.
Turns out, it does work regardless of the state of that feature!
I still think that having that turned on just makes sense for those times when it is in a pocket, but you are correct in that it does not preclude the AOD turn-off feature.

I have that setting on but it still won't turn off AOD in my pocket. I was worried my proximity sensor was defective so I tested it but it appears to be working fine.
What model/carrier do you guys have. I have the attached branded snapdragon model. Like I said before it used to work but now it doesn't. Not sure if it coincides with an update or not

You could always factory-reset the device and see if the functionality returns.
With an SD card and a SmartSwitch backup, it's not that painful to reset the phone and get it back to (more or less) the configuration you have right now.
After a reset, I'd probably test it >before< restoring the SmartSwitch backup - just to confirm that it isn't some app that is breaking the AOD turn-off deal.

Don't know if you've figured out your issue yet but I finally figured out what was causing mine to not turn off. It was bcActions app I was using to remap bixby button.

I have the exynos version. Are you sure it's the bxActions app causing it? Because I have it and the AOD still turns off for me.

Yeah I stopped bxaactions and it instantly fixed the AOD problem. What actions do you have your button mapped to?
