for those with more experience than me, how much does encryption affect phone performance?
why does google force encryption on users?
i understand on earlier model phones encryption used to hurt performance however on my Pixel 3XL removing encryption increased seq reads by 100-200MB/s (benchmark scores)
i am wondering, how does it affect performance, and whether it affects the user experience.
also what potential does encryption have at affecting phone batteries.

I'm currently running the stock rom, and I'm wondering if any other roms out there would provide improved performance without compromising stability much? My galazy player works ok most of the time, but there are times when it just seems to slow to a crawl (i think its checking for updates to stuff in the background).
There are a lot of different versions of cyanogenmod out there. Would a certain one be better than the others? While in the changelog for each android version, they claim to improve performance and stuff... but I also know that generally apps tend to get slower and fatter as the version number increases.
I've also been looking at EtherealRom, how would that compare?

Improved performance? Absolutely! Without a doubt! Stability? That depends on the ROM and your device. I'm currently running CM 10.2 on my 5 without any serious issues (SODs, pocket reboots, etc.). Of course, there's the obvious problem regarding the camera (it simply doesn't work), but that's not a big deal for me personally. The pictures my device takes are caca anyway...
The version of cyanogenmod will again depend on you and your device. CM 10.2 has TRIM, and I think it performs better. Considering our device's low specs though, YMMV. Don't know anything about EtherealRom, so I can't help you there.

Redd is the best when it comes to stability on the stock based side, where as CM10.2 is the best when it comes to battery life and performance.
Our device isn't considered to be powerful anymore. It's became an complete underdog. Thanks to Android's flexibility, you can force to make your phone pretty much fly with several tweaks.
1. Delete as much bloatware as possible.
This is regarded as an easiest, noobiest option to improve your phone's performance. Many OEM apps stays hibernated in the RAM, thus limiting free RAM available to the user and sometimes even stressing NAND too much. In the end, it's the best to keep your phone as clean and deleting useless apps on the fly.
2. Don't install too much apps into NAND memory
Benchmarks shown, that our phone's NAND chip is considered to be rather slow. Since many apps access small amounts of random data pretty much constantly, it's better to have less apps installed on your phone.
3. Avoid using app killers
This is a placebo effect, since Android's memory management is inferior to what app killers are doing. Many apps stays in such state, where they are ready to be launched almost instantly. App killers, however, pretty much screw all the mandatory functions and stresses the phone even more than before. Launcher redraws are rather common occasion when app killer is being used.
4. Use custom kernel
Custom kernels often offer more features and are more optimized to make the use of available hardware. OEMs never seem to mess around with kernels much, since they want to have their product as stable as possible. Devs, however, mess around with kernels and extract almost double the real-time performance.
5. Never fill up your storage completely
The more data is available on the storage, the harder is getting to find it. Since data is laid randomly, it searches for the information location. When there are too much data, it gets harder to find the data needed. Often slower cards, like Class 2 or Class 4, are considered to be the better choice, since those cards are much faster at writing and reading marginal data randomly.
6. Select the I/O scheduler, CPU governor wisely
These things manipulate with the main hardware. The better optimized the governors are, the better the phone will run and won't drain the battery as much. Though keep in mind, that many governors have their own drawbacks.
sioplus is one of the better I/O schedulers. It allows access to random data pretty quickly, which ensures smooth and snappy performance in the system.
ondemand is the most common and is the stapple and the base of many custom governors available today. It's method is pretty simple - whenever phone registers a touch input, it automatically raises the CPU speed to the max. In retrospect, it should give great performance, but it usually suffers from poor response.
7. Play around with Dalvik VM settings
My optimized settings (feel free to use them):
dalvik.vm.heapstartsize=6m (size when first launched)
dalvik.vm.heapgrowthlimit=64m (limit of standard app)
dalvik.vm.heapsize=192m (heap for large app)
These settings pretty much controls our multitasking. Each phone has it's own specified settings, so it could run better.
Lowering these settings could majorly improve performance, but it could slow down around, when there too much heavy apps running in the background.
Raising these settings could improve multitasking, since less CPU power is required to extract certain data to the RAM. Scrolling a heavy webpage, for instance - raising these settings could improve scrolling smoothness and loading times, since there isn't a need to clean the heapsize as frequently as it was before.

Do any of you run encryption on the V10 (FDE) and noticed any significant performance hits? I would really like to encrypt but I fear that I would notice a performance drop. Can I decrypt without data loss if the performance is not good?
I wanted to find out if the encrypting on a entirely new android device with 4gb ram or higher will cause significant performance issue. When I was looking similar topics, It seems to me a lot of people has experienced hindrance on the performance. I was reading the article written by Faiz Malkani, it seems to give a clear idea on the impact of Ui experience. However, I would like to know if this is the case with new phones now.
I recently went from a oneplus 5 to the nord 200 when I switched to t-mobile because of the free promotion. Before I got it I did a little bit of research on the processor and storage speed and didn't expect much of a difference in performance because the snapdragon 480 seems to be fairly powerful and the nord has the same UFS 2.1 storage as my old phone.
I was pretty disappointed to find in my use the phone about 1/2 the time the phone was pretty sluggish in the general user experience and app launch times were significantly longer. May be placebo, but I disabled digital wellbeing, and all the tmobile bloatware and it may have helped a little. I remember reading oneplus heavily throttled some of their phones in recent history. I may switch back to my old phone.
I know the device is relatively new, do you guys think it will get better with software updates or is this just how it is?
I found turning on "Mobile data always active" in the developer options massively improved performance in my apps (at least where online load times and download speeds in-game were concerned)
Did you just get your phone recently? After setting up this phone for the first time, I also noticed the device was extremely slow, with all the app and software updates happening in the background. After all the updates were installed, I turned the phone off for about a day, and performance went to normal. It's not as fast as a flagship and there are minor hiccups here and there, but that's about what I expected from a 400 series SoC.
My original report was the day after I set everything up, I disabled the permissions for the launcher which did improve the responsiveness of the launcher, but application performance and launch times are still slow compared to my old device and not what I would expect from a phone of this spec.
I'm pretty confident this phone is a victim of oneplus' recently reported throttling for battery life. I was curious and compared geekbench scores (which aren't throttled under oneplus' list) and both the nord and my oneplus 5 got fairly similar scores for both cpu and compute. I tried out a browser benchmark motionmark which benches graphics performance. The nord got a 25 and the oneplus 5 got a 189... I ran the test again to make sure but got similar results.
That graphics should be coming from gpu and not cpu though....
I tested cpu and compute on geekbench, compute is a measure of gpu performance. The nord scored a little higher than the 5 in that.
I would assume oneplus' throttling would effect cpu and gpu but even if not, my oneplus 5 scoring almost 8x as high does not seem anywhere near normal

Same experience here, i picked up this phone expecting at least a decent experience but still get bad slow not usable for everyday tasks sometimes.
Im not expecting a flagship performance of course but this is far from decent in my experience.
I hope android 12 will solve many performance issues. Or custom fw
I'm about to throw away this phone into trash. Did not expect so weak dev community activity. The laggy interface is almost unusable if you constantly swap between apps and find them unloaded from RAM. All my text or uploaded content just disappear. It is very frustrating experience. I never had this behaviour with my 2/32 gb xiaomi.

If you're really at your wit's end, have you considered installing a GSI? I've tried Phh's AOSP w/ gapps, and once you register your device with Google, it works flawlessly (except safetynet/drm) and is a million times faster than stock. Or I'd be more than happy to take your device off your hands.

You know, custom ROMs don't just appear out of thin air. Someone has to take the time to bring up a device and make it stable, and it's not an easy task. I would say to be patient and just accept the fact that there's no guarantee that this device will get custom ROMs.

Other than pictures from the camera being degraded compared to stock and having to install apps from the Play Store/changing a few settings in the Settings app, everything seems to work fine
