About Android Porting - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys, i've tried to port a j500fn rom to a j510FN, and everything worked out pretty well. Most of the things were working and everything was fine. I tried to use the camera but I remembered I forgot to change some files. I changed those files and I double-checked if I missed any bad files. I reflashed the ROM, everything was working but guess what, camera still didn't work. I changed the base ROM, still no result, I searched for a tutorial to see if I missed any file, and i didn't. I don't know what went wrong, can you guys help me? The rom was Validus 8.1 (Unofficial).

Hi there,
Porting is buggy, you have really many bugs to deal with, moreover there aren't so many tutorials on how to do that and fix errors.
I'll advice you to check how to build a ROM from source. That's the easiest way to do because you'll have less bugs to deal with, and there are tons of tutorial about that.
Here is one of the most complete.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/chef-central/android/guide-android-rom-development-t2814763
It's getting old but it's still fine, and XDA is filled with those kind of tutorial , go search the forum for other tutorial.
Have fun !

ANY ROMs FOR AN OEM A13 MID TABLET????

Hey Everyone, I purchased this real cheap tablet from ebay a 7" A13 MID tablet (OEM), and was wondering if anyone knows anything about these tablets. I keep getting a FC error and would like to just wife the device and install a custom ICS rom to it.
Any assistance or info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer!
I also have a generic A13 MID tablet with ICS 4.03. It would be cool if someone created a CM9 rom for this soc. So far I only found this ROM here but I haven't tried it yet.
Thank you for the information, is there any info on how to install a custom rom on these devices?
Description is in that link, you need to use Live suite 1.09 (google it) and a valid image.
Thank you, I am going to give it a try.

Yeah, I tried it and it did not work. The ROM does not support the touch screen on the device. But in the thread, I found a lot of people that had this same problem. So, you will find there links to five other ROM that may work for you. I tried two of them and one of them the touch screen was slightly response, on my second ROM I got fully touch screen functionality. It seems to work well and better than the original ROM on the tablet. No forced close etc.... I have not tried the other ROMs yet, I might in the next few weeks.
the ROM that worked for me was the eliveupdate one. I have not yet tried the Teclast_p76TI-r1-3_4.03_GAPPS_r2 nor Teclast_p76TI-r4_4.03_GAPPS_r2. Also I have not yet tried the Tragidy-A13-Hyper-Jelly-404C-Mali.
I forget the name of the file that did not work but it started out with something like "soni----------". I already delete that file from my computer.
it is worth changing the ROM, the original ROM sucks big time and constantly would have errors, now the device is usable. While it is a low end device with low end specs.....it is a great device for my son (6 yrs old) and now it is fully functional without any errors popping up.
good luck!

thanks.. but i already flashed it!! Was too curious..my first flash!
Every thing worked fine.. but the touch screen is responding in a reversed manner!! Suppose i touch the left, its sensing the right, n so on!
I am going to give a try to the others too.. n specially that you are using now.. are the sensors working on it fine??

Well, that's the nice thing about flashing ROMs....if it doesn't work or you don't like it, you can always flash back to the original or another ROM.
The other ROMs on that site are better than the original ROM on the device and really help make the device usable. Good Luck!!
sorry forgot to mention that the sensors and everything seem to be working fine. I'll try the other three ROM later this weekend and let you know (if I actually get a chance to do so), how they worked...or didn't work.

I have ordered an A13 9" tablet from DX.com. If it is anything like the one I bought for my mother I guess it will be and will need a good custom rom... ?

Hi,
do you still have the stock rom? I accidentally deleted mine and now stuck with the reversed rom. Please help me, I've looked everywhere and couldn't find a single compatible rom.
If you do have it, please upload to a filesharing and email the link to [email protected].
Many thanks in advance for the help

I don't still have the stock ROM but I found one on the thread link given above, that is much better and everything is working great on the device. I would suggest that you try one on this thread (if you have not already - it sounds like you may have already done so). That would be the only advise I can give you.
You could also try contacting the OP of that thread, he seems very well informed on ROM modifications, etc...but he also seems to be very busy with other projects and my not be able to give you much help...either way, it can't hurt to ask... Good Luck!
I would be glad to send you any of the ROMs that I have, but I do not believe they are the original ROM.

If you have a dropbox or some other service, just share a folder with me (send me a messsage for my e-mail address) and I will place the ROMs that I have in that dropbox folder for you. Or you can just go through the link provided in one of the first few posts in this thread and then search that site.

so how did you make the nexus rom for it?
The issue is that I do not own the phone, but I am looking at porting CM to MTK6589.
MIUI porting is a bit different, it would not involve kernel compiling per se I believe (CM either, but I would like to).
To give it a go, I would need info from here:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Doc:_porting_intro
So your ROM version, partition info etc.
When I manage to port to a device I own, I can give it a go.

i compiled my first recovery based on cm 10.1 for Thl W8.
I have no easy way to push the image to the phone to test.
If it works, I can start to create a recovery for this phone based on sources.
I would need that info I requested.
Are you able to post the build.prop file and the partition dump?
Look at the page with instructions I posted earlier.
Meantime I look for an easy way to flash that recovery, somehow sp flashtool does not read the scatter file created by mtkdroidtools .

So, like I requested before, please :
- post your build.prop file
- post identification stuff of the device, like screen resolution, memory and recovery.fstab (or the recovery image)
- in general take a look at the link I posted before and read it, so you know what info is needed :
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Doc:_porting_intro
The reason I ask is because there are at leat 2 different versions, 1 had 960x480 screen and 1/4gb ram/rom, the other 1280x720 and 2/8.
They obviously at least have different partitions and displays and perhaps even other different hardware.
You can also post a full working ROM on dropbox or something.
thanks
P.S. for the needed tools, see here:

This is a CWM 6.0.3.3 which works on my device.
Use SP Flash Tools 3.13 something to flash.
My scatter file is attached, please compare it with yours.
Needless to say perhaps, but still: this is on your own risk.
You may damage your device if you do not know what you are doing.
Bricking it is not my fault!
So think before you act.
If you try: please give feedback if it works.
If does it is the same device: N9389 5.3", 960x480 (qHD) , 1 gb ram, 4 gb rom.

Hi,
Well I am partly motivated by your offer, but I enjoy Android and Linux hacking.
Let's hope those attempts will lead to something.
How about LewaOS? There are good porting guides for that.
I will try to look for MIUI or CM in the weekend.
Initial CM would miss dual sim support.
Maybe MIUI is easier, because some work has been done.
Well, I'll see.
Don't overestimate the complexity, if you have CM 6 and made it yourself, porting a rom is doable I suppose ?
cheers

It's not that simple. You'll need to learn a lot about coding in order to be anywhere close to doing it. It's not copy pasting stuff here and there or installing from a backup.

Since you're a noob, I can't think of anything easier than this for you
Go through the ports which are already available (like Mi A2) (must be xiaomi)
See what files the dev used to get the camera working on non-miui roms
To give you rough idea there will be xiaomi framework , some xmls, libs etc.
Try replicating those exact files from your stock firmware and create a flashable zip or directly paste em into root
Also try contacting the dev of that camera and see if he agrees to help you out !
Ask him if you face any trouble throughout.
Ignore people who are discouraging,
Today a noob, tomorrow a pro
Thanks a lot. I trialed and error-ed and came to same method you mentioned below.
