Water damage - no phone funcionality - Huawei P20 Lite Questions & Answers

Hi all,
I drove with my bike in the rain, my Huawei P20 lite in the backpack. It got wet and after drying in rice, everything works (e. g. display, wifi, accu, touch, loudspeaker, buttons) , except basic telephone and 3g, 4g connectivity. I've looked meanwhile some repair videos and wonder which component could give me back this connectivity. Do you have a recommendation?

How Waterproof is the Aperia Active?

I'm looking a waterproof, and hardwearing phone for my mum.
She wants an android phone that she can take kayaking with her. She is planning on using an app like 'endomondo' to track her activities on the river but when paddling you do occasionally fall in!
So... a question for all Active owners... how waterproof is it really?
It's not going to go very far underwater, a meter or so at most. The advertising blurb says it should be fine but was after some assurance from users that know!
many thanks in advance...
waterproof
Yes it is waterproof!
video
thanks for the link.I guess that proves it!
Are there any phones that can go deeper underwater atm?

Google something like "rugged phone 2011" - there are several phones that claim to be especially made for outdoor persuit activities and you'll be able to check the specs (and see what they actually guarantee). I'd also look at (less geeky) sites specialising in such activities - perhaps a canoe club or society. Good money says that they'll have greater expertise on this subject than the average software writer.
One other point - there are protectors available for many phones. The cheapest are basically plastic bags - the dearest are custom fitted, sealed hard-cases (pretty much the same sort of thing you get for cameras). You can find those in online stores but you may get more detailed infromation by looking at specialist outdoor shopping sites (you can always get the info then see if it's cheaper elsewhere).
hi thanks for the reply.
ive tried numerous searches however there are many phones that are 'coming out soon', or are simply in japan and not over here yet!
I was seeking some inside knowledge lol
I've seen waterproof cases for nearly every phone around however would rather it did not have to use a case as it it very important for it to be hassle free and easy to use. She will be upgrading from an old nokia in a plastic bag!
Although not entirely submerged, mine was tested in a glass of water at work during a lunch break.
Evidence: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7a0HH6brAQ
(but for super-rugged, I'd look at Sonim. Some models they'll apparently replace no-questions-asked if water damaged. Not android, however)
yes
Yes, but my experience says, the network coverage goes quickly down - the deeper You submerege the phone underwater. So speaking underwater or texting is not possible, but....
Camera still works fine even deep.
ha... i dont think she will use it underwater! Its just in case the boat capsises...
so ideally the phone would be ok down to about 2m... just in case!
Is there really not an android phone in the UK that will go down to 2m and survive?
i dropped my active in a bucket of water and left it there for 5 minutes
i discovered water between the main and the second cover and my voice sound robotic after taking a call , there was water in the mic hole ..
i will never drop it again for sure !!

Yes, the water is supposed to go between first and second cover. If You open it up, You'll see, the second cover has a seal to make it waterproof. So that's normal.
If mic is wet, the sound distortion is also normal, since water distorts it quite badly. The first cover holds the second tightly to keep it waterproof.
Would something like a Sonim XP3300 Force be suitable - around £250.
That phone is sold as water-proof to 2m for an hour and can even be dropped 2m into concrete without harm (it also claims to have the longest battery life of any phone in the world). Has A-GPS and the usual "extras" to go online etc. Buttons designed to be used whilst wearing gloves. It's basically designed for heavy industry.
Double check but I understand it comes complete with a load of "extras" included in the price - case, car and wall charger, dashboard mount etc - that may make the price more attractive.
It just made it into the Guinness Book of Records - it's officially the world's toughest phone
From personal experience I can assure you its
As waterproof as it should be. The obly review that managed to make me buy this phone was this: dcrainmaker.com/2011/09/hands-on-review-of-sony-ericsson-xperia.html
This guy actually makes a real life test of the phone. I myself work at construction so I have cement splashing on it, and all I have to do it take a shower with it to make it aaaaalright
Regarding the defy... Well its got a larger screen, but it looks more flimsy than the Active. What sorta put me off on the defy is the quality of the power and minijack rubber plugs. They would only last not so long on my hands... All you have to do on the active is change the back cover. The only drawback for me being accustomed to a physical keyboard amd a 3,7" screen of my Desire Z is the size of the onscreen keyboard of the 3 inch screen.
Also expect somewhat better battery life on the Active than the defy. Almost 50% of the battery drain is from the screen, and having 60% less pixels on a screen you easily go through 2 days of moderate-heavy use.

[Q] Anyone else having antenna sensitivity issues?

I switched from a Focus to the Titan about a week ago. I love the Titan, except it seems to me that the antenna sensitivity is pretty poor. Cases in point:
1. On a call on my Titan at the office, I enter a stairwell in the building, and immediately the call drops. With my Focus, I could walk up and down these stairs all day while on a call and never have the call drop.
2. At home, I get very poor coverage. Last night at home my Titan is telling me that there is no network available. I walk over and pick up my wife's Focus and it is showing AT&T network and two bars! I power cycled my Titan hoping that it might re-lock onto the network, but it continued to tell me that no network was available all evening. I was unable to make or receive any calls last evening.
3. Right now, sitting in my desk at work, my Titan is bouncing between 2-3 bars. My Focus, sitting in the same spot would always show 4-5 bars. When I pick up my Titan, the signal strength display drops to one bar.
I really, really like this phone, but if this is the indication of the signal strength that I can expect, I am going to have to return it. Anyone else having this problem?
OK, I may have answered my own question. After posting, I saw this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18523952&postcount=12
I opened the case on my Titan, contacts looked fine. But when I put the phone back together, I squeezed the case very hard at the bottom, and the signal strength indicator immediately went to four bars. Will monitor and see if this takes care of the problem.
Just received my Titan.
The signal is terrible. Sitting right next to my hd7s, the hd7s gets speeds of around 1mbit/sec while the Titan gets connection errors.
Checked the contacts and they are fine
Everywhere I test, the Titan consistently has a weak signal. This is on att in central NY. I wont even compare it to the signal on my Droid with verizon. I absolutely love the phone, but with the signal problems I'm probably going to be returning it

Did you get a new SIM card or are you using your old one. The new micro SIM made a big difference on my Titan. I had a one year old sim from my Focus. My nephew had a 15 month (?) old Sim for an Iphone 3Gs. When I put both in two Titans, mine was had better signal and internet connection. I noticed that Titan uses the micro SIM(saw someone with it), so I got a new micro SIM yesterday. My signal is even better. The internet flies on my phone now.
I'm still using my old sim that I had from the Focus (and earlier). Did you get your micro sim at the AT&T store? I may get one myself.

Yes, I did. Make sure to go to a corporate store. It's free. If you go to a franchise they'll charge $20, I believe.
When I bought my phone online, they sent a new SIM with the phone.
Signal strength and quality seem better since I made my original post. Still not as good as my old Focus, but acceptable.
No issues here! Can text in lifts!

Hello there,
After getting my Titan from AT&T, I saw that the signal was much lower than my iPhone 4.
When I got home, I had no service in the house where I had 1 or 2 bars with the iPhone 4.
I checked the contacts, but they where fine, so I started to make test to find witch of the 2 botthom contacts was the positive of the antenna.
With the phone face down, the faar right contact is the ground of the antenna, because it has continuity with the chassis of the phone.
So the left contact is the one to work with.
I then research on the internet for the lenth of a 850mhz antenna, & I found that it is 9 cm.
I then cut a piece of brass shim half a centimeter wide by 9 centimeter long.
I soldered a small hard copper wire thru the left hole of the cover & soldered it to the inside tab of the back cover, making shure that no solder or wire protrude from the contact. Otherwise you will have problems to close the back cover against the phone.
I then made a pin hole thru one end of my brass shim I had previously cut.
I then turned the cover over & pass the brass shim thru the hard copper wire I just soldered on the inside. I used invisible regular tape to secure the brass shim on the back cover & then proceeded to solder the shim with the hard copper wire as close to the back cover possible. I then tested my invention & I have now 2 bars where I had no service before.
Of course, I Had a Hard Cover shell to cover this installation, but the results are fantastic.
You have to be aware that the phone back cover will be altered in case of warranty, but you can get a replacement cover on Ebay for aprox $36.
Do this at your own risk
You can sand this soldering in order to prevent having difficulties putting a protective skin or cover.
I strip of copper can also be used for this homemade antenna.
You can PM me if you need more help for the installation.
I now have a full functioning HTC Titan that I now have learn to cherish.
By the way, the problem that a lots of people are having with slow downloads, is directly related to tha lack of a good antenna on this phone.
Hope this hep some of you out there.

I found the real problem with signal issues of the Titan.
I had bought a second HTC Titan & I thought of trying the back cover on my first Titan.
The results are astonishing. The back cover was all that was wrong on my device. With the second Titan I purchased from AT&T on the Web, there is no problem with the sigral.
I have now ordered a new cover from Ebay & will try to get a replacement from HTC for my original one that was defective.
I really think there was a bad batch of those back covers for this Titan & we where the unlucky ones to get them.
If you know someone that has no issues with his Titan, try his back cover on your phone.
Hope this help someone.
Good luck.

Dropped in shallow, muddy water. How concerned should I be?

Watering the plants, I dropped my 3vo while listening to music into shallow muddy water face down, it was not fully submerged. Music continued and screen worked until I pulled the battery (immediately), noting that water did not enter the casing, then I continued to wipe off the water and blow the crevices with compressed air. When I blew air into the grill with the talk speaker, light & proximity sensors, and indicator light, I noticed bits of water flew out. I've concluded that this is the only problem area as water did not enter inside anywhere else . . . should I be concerned with slight amounts of dirty water in there? How can I clean it out from under the grill, as I do not have distilled water at home?
It is sitting face down in a bowl of uncooked rice atm.
Thank you very much in advanced!
You're probably fine... I've done the same (minus the rice) and had no issue whatsoever.
Our phones are beast mode. No worries
I never tried to put my Evo in the water but put my old N1 into the washing mashine (by accident ofc). After 15 minutes at 60°C (140F) I saw some weird light coming out of the mashine. It was the screen showing fancy stuff. There was water EVERYWHERE. The screen was still on when it was 3/4 filled with water. Even the battery is performing still perfect.
Long story short:
The board with the camera on it was partly fried:
- cam broken (worked for a few days than decided better not to)
- bluetooth broken
- fm radio not working because it gets its juice through the bluetooth chip
Everything else was fine. The beast is still working (happened in 2010) without any problems. If the evo's build quality is similar your phone might even had fun while jumping into that muddy water.
First off, you absolutely did the right thing by immediately taking the battery out and putting it in rice. Most phones can be saved from water damage as long as they are FULLY dried out before turning them back on again. Boards get shorted out when you try to turn the power on when there is still water inside the phone.
Second, if it was just regular water, you should be fine with just drying it out. But since you say it was muddy water, I would personally suggest taking the phone apart and cleaning any dirt out of it, just to be sure you didnt get any inside.

Weak GPS signal, hardware fault or just screws?

It was working perfect till I spilled a tiny bit of tomato sauce near it, luckily it had a plastic back protector on it but a few drops went into headphone jack so bought a replacement one and screwed it in.
This is when the problems started so I assume it is just a case of loose screws, I sent it for warranty repair though and they refused to replace claiming the insides had severe water damage(despite the water sensor stickers looking normal and every other thing in phone working)
They put a gps test app on and no matter if indoors or outdoors I got 0 signal, I took back off and put a spray of compressed air on the top of the motherboard and lifted the metal tab a little that presses down now indoors I get 0-4 pickedup but the signal is about 19, and outdoors get about 18-20 but the signal is at 39 which is good enough really but I assume it should be better as my friends Sony Xperia has a strong GPS signal in my house and outdoors.
Just wondered what the issue could be, it may be the motherboard as the only other issue I have had since the spillage is instead of a 2 hour charge time it takes about 6 hours but the battery still lasts as long as before(a week or so)

water damage?

Wife submerged her phone in a pool for about 5 seconds and now sound from mic is garbled. This was two days ago. I've tried locating the LDI in the sim slot but don't see it and haven't found any pics online showing exactly were it Is. Is it possible that the phone is damaged from such limited exposure to water?
I have submerged my phone several times for seconds and few times for minutes inside pool and also used in heavy rainfall but my phone's speakers &mic recovered every time after few hours of use.
Try to keep your phone in a box full of rice for 24hrs that might solve the issue and mostly it will be a temporary issue.
I fell into salt water with my phone (for about 10 seconds) and phone survived fine. This was about 2 months ago.
Just back from tmobile and there's no water damage. Doesn't seem to be related to the dip in the pool. Since I'm withing the 14 day window, Just did an even exchange for a new device.

So, IP68 works.
My V30 was submerged like 20 times shortly, no more than a minute or two on a very shallow depth of sea water. I desalted phone in sweet water quickly each time. I sail and my pockets are always wet, and somehow humidity got inside of the phone and now I get message "charging disabled until usb connector is dry" - and it's dry, it's been drying for days. when I tilt phone backwards, it starts to charge, then when I put it vertically it stops. Really weird.
I either have bad luck because other ppl are happy with IP68 OR not every V30 was build equally. I will buy one more V30 as they are cheap now and retry if it's luck or just bad build - and if it fails again then this phone is no IP68 whatever other ppl or articles say.
Temporary fix, maybe bad idea is to turn off the moisture sensor in service menu: type in dialer:
*#546368#*931# then service menu and disable moisture sensor. Sounds retarded approach but phone works for now. This secret number tends to vary from model to model and even stops working when you change setting or two, so you might need trying other codes to restore setting: *#546368#*930#. Totally weird, but worked here.
Funny thing - now I use Butterfly 3 for water sports because that one I don't care much about that phone due to some software bugs in dialler (exit code issue for these who know) - but that one just doesn't want to die. I was even diving with it to +10 meters many times, each time an hour of surface or deep recording to film bottom of the yacht and phone just works., wet pockets, driving on the rain, all slippery and mess from fish, and it still works.
So what is going on with these IP ratings?? They aren't right, I am telling you - they are misleading. HTC is plastic unibody with some evil glue beneath LCD and has caps for some major ports, while LG is glass sandwich design and ho caps over holes or whatever, but IP57 can't be better than IP68 but it turns HTC did better job with glue lol
