Hello ! Couple months ago unlocked bootloader and did root, just flashed newest miui and forgot that will replace my recovery to stock one, sadly don't have access to PC right now. Is there any way to root phone/install TWRP without PC? Like installing stock miui with pre-installed Magisk in it or smth like it~
Hey man I guess you could try and download the twrp APK file if you don't have access to PC.
https://dl.twrp.me/twrpapp/
but I highly recommend you to root your phone via PC
If you're really desperate, you can try Kingroot. Google it. Its not gaurenteed to work, and its possibly sketchy, but it might allow you to replace the recovery to TWRP and then go from there. I don't advise this method, but if you have no way of using a PC, this could potentially work. Or it could vaporize the nose off your face. I don't know. Use at your own risk.

Hi all.
Ok, I'm fairly confused as to how to go about rooting my transformer prime 9.4.2.21 tablet.
As I understand it, I should be able to unlock the tablet, then install a 'ROM' that is already rooted, which means..I can boot into the 'ROM' and have root access??
So, I set out and unlocked my tablet (I'm aware of the warranty repercussions). Done. Now I want to root the tablet so I can install Ubuntu or perhaps Debian on it...does anyone know how I go about this?
I'm SURE this has been asked, I just can't seem to find it...I'm also quite new to the mobile 'hacking' world, and I'm a bit confused about all the buzz words (i.e. 'flashing a ROM', etc)..
I appreciate any help!
Cheers
I am pretty sure the next step after unlocking it is installing CWM, then using that to install the ROM of your choice.
Anyone else want to chime in here?
A.) Unlock.
B.) Flash ROM (you may want to pick before unlock0.
C.) Enjoy.
Unless it says otherwise you can assume any ROM that isn't from the manufacture, is rooted. The development section has ROMs, unlock, and Ubuntu crap. I use Debian in a chroot rather than native, and forgo X11. You may have to search for some things.
Can you point out a thread on how to install CWM from an unrooted device? Been searching,, but every thread points to Viperboy's thread, which will not work on .21.

You can't install CWM if you haven't unlocked. Root doesn't have anything to do with unlocking.
I suggest using Viperboy's tool to unlock your device. Be careful to follow ALL the directions and you'll be just fine.

Rooting and unlocking are different. If you are unlocked, research which ROM you'd like to install and follow the directions in that thread. Virtually every ROM thread has the directions listed. There's even a thread if you want to try Ubuntu, though it has limited functionality right now.
Personally, I like Jermaine's AOKP ROM. It is really fast and smooth.
That's all well and good, how do you install CWM after unlocking? All of the posts say to use viperboy's tool, but it is not available at this time, the link is dead.
On version 4.5 that I already have option 5 unlock says "MUST BE ROOTED!!"
Are you saying it works without root? Or will the Fastboot method here work?
ok mcliar, I found in another thread from you this:
EDIT: I fixed it! I was able to pull an .apk of OTA Voodoo Rootkeep from a previous Titanium Backup file. I installed the app, and it restored root for me! Its possible that I was already still rooted, but without the ability to d/l apps I couldn't do anything about it. Anyway, I'm back with a rooted .21!
I have a similar situation, lost wifi, did a factory reset, lost voodoo and now can't reroot. How did you pull the apk and install it on the prime?

I had a backup apk from titanium backup. I'll attach the apk so you can see if it works for you.
Yes, Viperboy's tool will unlock and install CWM without root (EDIT: come to think of it, I was rooted when I ran this. You can follow this if it doesn't work for you--->). Alternatively, you can use the ASUS tool itself, and then follow this thread to install CWM.
seems like everything needs root...
Ok...
So, I need to 'Flash a ROM'...right. I'm looking in the development section, and the ones I'm looking at require CWM to be installed..but that (from what I can find) requires root to install...
There was a mention of ViperMOD. However, from what I can tell that program will install CWM after you root the device, which it can't for me, as I'm running .21.
I've also read several mentions about using Rom Manager. I installed the free version, and tried to install CWM that way, but it failed with 'An error occurred while attempting to run priviledged commands', presumable because I need to root the device first.
Soo...it really looks like I need to root the device before I can do anything. Is this incorrect? It seems like it is, but when I look into the suggestions listed here I seem to run into a brick wall because I need a rooted device...
I appreciate all the suggestions guys, I really want to get stuff working on my TFP. Any help is (as always!) appreciated.
Thanks

oops sorry, I missed that CWM link...I'll check that out.
I have been researching all day, you will need to use fastboot in order to install cwm for the first time if you don't already have root. It will be what I use if I cannot get this titanium backup apk to work.
Mcliar, I appreciate you getting me the APK. I will let you know how it goes.
Could you post the backed up "su" for "OTA Voodoo Rootkeep" (i am guessing it stores the file in the application folder). I am wondering if it would be able to use this back to root the TF201
thanks

I have a S3 19300 that was rooted using exploit one click root...
Worked fine on 4.04...
Have recentley updated to 4.1.1 19300XXELJ2
And didnt want to inject su via mobile odin so didnt ckick to root...
Now have lost root and since new rom exploit wont work either...
Next problem is my usb cant connect to otg or computer...
Computet tells me usb device has malfunctioned.
I have latest kies and drivers etc have tried different computer and different ports etc..
Also tried to root by installing cwm zip but keep getting signatures failed thing so no go there..
Is there any other way i can root without odin?
I really want TWRP but need root access first...
Lost for ideas now....
Anybody can help?...
Also im overseas for a while so cant drop phone to get usb problem fixed at moment..
Try installing SU from Play store, sounds as though you have lost the binaries if you didn't select the option
Yeah but need root access....for su to update binarys...
When i flashed jellybean rom with odin i didnt choose ever root
As used exynos exploit one click root before...
I like that you can un root it without flashing a stock rom so
This was my plan...how ever when jb installed exynos exploit wont work now?
Funny cause i thought it was the chip it works on and didnt think a rom would stop it to work..
With out root i cant use TWRP either...
Now im guessing my only choice is to use cwm zip through restore...
Cwm do this on my tablet but on my phone it doesnt work due to failed signatures...
If anybody can help thanks....
Hi folks,
Ive been having a strange problem with a couple Galaxy Mega I9200. I have rooted both before without any problems using KINGO originally. The i decided to update both of them with version UBUCNA2. When i tried to re root them back, even though the process have run fine a couple times the phone is not rooting. At this point i dont know what else to do to try to root those phones. I have tried every single method around this forum i think not just KINGO this time. And have not been able to reach root the way it should. Titanium backup shows not able to aquire root priviledges, and other root apps also. Can someone please help me on this?? Keep in mind im not a newbie so dont give me the recovery method advice without something new or to use KINGO because ive have done that already. Thanks a lot guys
You upgraded your phones to the latest knox enabled firmware which has the knox bootloader. You cannot go back to an older firmware or flash a custom rom now.
To root, try the directions provided in this thread and use the melius3gxx files instead of meliusltexx.

Ok thanks, the phones already had the knox apk so my guess was that it was going to be the same thing. Thanks for clarifying that one. And thanks for the advice.
Thanks again, turns out the only thing that is failling root access is when i try to unlock the phone via box. For some reason when its checking for SU access it fails. But thanks anyway i managed to solve the Root problem.
root.
I rooted through Phill touch Recovery.
I have converted my AT&T M8 to stock Dev Edition following this thread. Worked a treat.

I'm going on a vacation and want to use my phone as a transfer spot for photos taken with a DSLR. To do that, I will need to be able to copy/move files from the camera's SD card onto my phone's SD using USB OTG.
I understand that if I keep the stock recovery, loader, etc and only achieve root, then I will be able to get any OTA that becomes available. I will also be able to use one of the methods to enable writing to the SD of the phone.
So, the question is, how to get root without changing anything that will impact the OTA ability?
Hope I was clear in what I have and what I'm looking for.

I've never heard of anyone wanting just root, so I'm not sure. But if your bootloader is unlocked you can try TowelRoot and see if that works and just install SuperSu through the playstore.
Unique
Ha! I'm unique.
Actually, I like Sense, and Lollipop is fine. I just didn't loike all the crap AT&T forced onto the phone and Uber was the last straw.
So, I want to keep the phone 'stock' except for accessing the extrenal SD.
I'll give Towelroot a shot and see how it goes.

Maybe I'm just off base here, but once the bootloader is unlocked, can't you just fastboot TWRP recovery, install SU (zip) file via recovery, then fastboot stock recovery and end up with a stock rooted device? Or does Lollipop not allow this?

Hmmmm, perhaps just booting a recovery and installing SU would work.
See why I asked?
Guess this will wait for the weekend now. Restoring a phone takes more time than I have and it looks like I'm in uncharted territory.
Again, my objective is to have an OTA acceptable system with root.
Thanks for the two ideas, and of course, I'm open to others.

I had a rooted device (4.4.2) and when I wanted the OTA to 4.4.4, I kept the root, but re-fastbooted the stock recovery so that the OTA would work. It kept my root (I think), and then I just re-installed TWRP so that I could still do backups..
I hope that someone with more knowledge than I will chime in if I'm wrong (or right).

This is what I would suggest. There may be other ways (root without custom recovery). But I know for certain that the following will work: flash TWRP, flash SU or SuperSU to root. Than flash back to stock recovery.
You will be on stock recovery, have root, and should not impact OTA (provided all system files are also stock and not altered by root).
You can also try to fastboot boot TWRP (and then flash SU/SuperSU) without actually flashing TWRP. I'm not certain this will work, but I think it does under LP. I think something on 4.4.4 broke this ability, but then it came back.
Weekend Project
I will try the boot TWRP method first, and if that fails, I'll flash TWRP, get root, then go back to stock recovery.
This is now just an exercise to see which method works as the stock File Manager reads the USB and can copy files to the SD. I had not tried since 4.4.4. but did yesterday and it works for any kind of file.
Hey everyone,
I'm new to the rooting community and am trying to find a way to root my Galaxy S8 (G950F) without a PC or TWRP. The reason behind this is the port on the phone is fried, meaning I can only charge with a wireless charger or use an app like Airmore to transfer files. Before you tell me to go and fix my phone's port, can anyone suggest a rooting method for my specifications that will work?
So far I have tried:
360 Root
King Root
Kingo Root
iRoot
Thanks,
Rifts
i have read a way to root your phone without twrp and pc some years ago but these methods are not safe unless you unlock your bootloader first.also these apps wont work because you are android 9(these apps work until android 5.0 i think).the official way is going download mode>install odin on pc>flash twrp>(making a backup highly reccomended)>format data(i prefer factory reset)>flash magisk or supersu>boot phone.in this way your bootloader will be unlocked and your phone will be rooted.im afraid that there is no way to root android 9 without pc

Okay thanks for the support. I will probably have to repair my charger port.
