I researched about the matter, and reached some conclusions:
- I don't want to use the TEST POINTER method, I really don't care about OTA updates or Track ID app (as far as I know there are no more consequences), Shazam and Soundhound do the same
- I would like to unlock the bootloader in some manner that, if I need to relock the warranty will still be valid (same goes for root, but I guess flashing an original firmware unroots the device)
That said, found the official instructions to unlock the BL, but still have the main question: is it the procedure completely reversible? Also, is it free?
Thanks in advance. Also really appreciate if someone corrects something wrong I said.

you can still relock your bootloader and receive official sony updates, but the problem is, you loose DRM(in which if sony finds out, you still lose warranty).
i found this thread and said that DRM cannot be restored :/
I don't know about non free relocking if it will be able to restore DRM though.
oh and by the way, this thread provides the easiest way to unlock and relock your bootloader for free.

DRM cannot be restored at all.
Install TrackID from market and it will work.
Bootloader can be relocked, doesn't matter how you unlocked.
And yes, it is free.

Ok, so I suppose the DRM Keys only affect the OTA updates (how should we care if we are unlocking BL for custom ROMs
So, I suppose if I have a problem on my Live (but it still turns on), I apply an OFW and then relock it, it's a matter of luck if the techical assistance is going to check if the DRM is still valid or not.
What method do you advice to unlock the BL?

Method, pick which is better for you. I used official method, no messing with cables.

Unlock it the way you prefer to it does not matter it will lose warranty any way it is just luck if they will check it or not at the service center. Any way it is really hard to completely brick your phone unless you don't know what you are doing. The main difference is with the test point method you are able to update using seus without problems and it looks more complicated than it really is I only used a clip
just a question about unlocking thru official method.
since you would have to get the unlock key directly from Sony.
would they be able to track your phone since you will be giving them some details like your name, IMEI, email etc. to get the unlock code?
do the service centers have access to that database?
There are no Sony Mobile Service Centers, phones need to be taken back to shop and they use service of specific mobile repair shop.
Depending on what reason you need to take it back, they might want to check it or not. No one has so far done this, so we have no information.

There is no risk either way the difference is that with the official method you will lose your drm (Digital rights management) and the official support of track id (the app from se that you use to search for the info of a song playing in the radio or the tv etc.) meanwhile using the test point method you will not lose them. If you want to install a custom rom like cm9 or miui you need to unlock your bootloader to be able to flash the custom kernels those roms need.

I just want to understand the following. Some Live's come with "unlock bootloader allowed"="no" others ="yes". What does that means and more important: what are the implications?
I cannot understand the difference because as fair as I understand right now, all live's (branded/sim unlocked or not) are unlockable (referring to bootloader).

When they come with boot loader unlock : no it is a branded sim locked phone in which case you can unlock bootloader but you will have no access to fastboot meaning you are unable to flash a custom kernel, also there will be no way you can officially unlock the bootloader so will have to use the test point method and of course you will need to pay to fully unlock your phone to be able to access fastboot and flash custom kernels.
Did I miss something??

I'm not really sure about Wotan server however I'm pretty sure about setool and omnius and if you are willing to pay the phone will be fully unlocked (bootloader, sim and fastboot) with one procedure using the test point method.

So, I'm curious, if I have branded sim lock Live ("no" bootloader) can I install an original firmware without using an official channel? Do I need fastboot access?
I'm asking because I'm almost sure that my carrier will not update the Live to 4.0, so I suppose I have to use some other tool in order to install it.

you can debrand (install a generic firmware) your phone using wotan server for free and as i know it will also change your product code so next time and official sony update is available your phone will get it.

Hi guys So from a time now I wanted to install CM in my Live Walkman. But what's my surprise when it says "Unlock Bootloader: No". I searched through multiple webpages and found two solutions: paying for a wotanserver (wich I can't pay), or by someone doing it remotely I think. Does anyone hava a different solution or help me remotely unlocking it?

Current Firm: 4.0.4 custom (but not that good )
Rooted: Yes
Carrier: TMN (portuguese)

Just to be honest - Stock rom is actually better than custom rom
Anyway,you can't unlock your bootloader even using testpoint since the date of your device is morn than requirement date to unlock bootloader

No CyanogenMod for you, unfortunately. This requires unlocked bootloader, however your phone is one of those unlucky ones, which do not have any unlocking possibility at all. At least for now.

U can root Your device and uninstall all apps from Your carrier (which are installed to system partition by default). It should increase performacne a little bit.

We can't promise anything, because it could be fastboot will still remain disabled. You could try it, but I guess it won't work

Seems so, as I have had the same problem by installing MM 6.0.1 firmware with the UK csc code VOD (appearing as BTU on phone). The bootloader wouldn't let me flash TWRP through ODIN (sorry, could flash, but not boot into TWRP, stuck on bootloader).
So i took the provided MM 6.0.1. bootloader from Carotix CarHDRom, flashed it together with at the same place provided TWRP for
MM (the old 2.8.7.0/2.8.7.1 or even new TWRP 3.0 provided on the homepage of TWRP.me , won't work on MM) throught ODIN.
Within TWRP flashed hybridmax's S5E-AELKernel_MM...kernel 1.5 and superSU beta 2.67 (previosly stored/copied to the mobile device) and rebooted - rooted and all working fine.

Do not know if or not.
Just flashed first the original VOD 6.0.1 fw and then tried to have a working TWRP recovery, but could't boot into TWRP recover, the original bootloader did not let me... this for, bootloader and twrp from carotix (and eventually his provided kernel and/or rom) , and everything goes fine.

My understanding of a locked bootloader is that you can't flash anything that isn't official, including a replacement bootloader, which you indicate you did successfully. Otherwise Verizon Samsung customers would simply flash a new bootloader over their locked one. Ever TWRP wouldn't have flashed, it would have kicked out an error in Odin as you made the attempt because the bootloader wouldn't have allowed it. It sounds like your attempt at flashing it finished successfully, but just wouldn't boot into it. I'm wondering if this was caused by something other than the bootloader being locked.

All possible. However, sometimes we'll just have to give it a try, by using the information and software available. I do have to mention, that my mobile is/was provider-free (not locked to a specific provider). But even a locked mobile can be handeld to get
in free and unlocked. In such case, this should be done first and after that the upgrade to rooted MM and ROM, etc.

Hi, i had the same problem. I flashed TWRP, but i could not boot to TWRP. I found that I also have locked bootloader. No OEM Unlock toggle in dev options.

I've not received my phone yet, but this doesn't look good. Were you able to disable the reactivation lock on your S6? Or, alternatively, like coco722, were you able to simply overwrite the bootloader? I'm not concerned with Knox or Vodafone's warranty, as long as I'm able to overcome the locked bootloader and root.
On the latest t mobile software, dev mode enabled, but I dont see "OEM UNLOCK" anywhere...does anyone have that option on their note 8?

I think you use that TMO device unlock app.
I thought that was just for carrier unlock, NOT OEM unlock...have you used that app?

No, I disabled it. Been with TMO too long, I'm not going anywhere and neither are they. Thanks for teaching me the difference, lol! This bootloader is locked.
there are a few different "locks" to deal with on this phone; the bootloader, which is currently locked, carrier lock, meaning you are locked to tmobile, and the OEM unlock, which allows you to flash roms, both stock and custom, assuming you have an unlocked boot-loader
On most other phones, in the developer options, there is a OEM Unlock entry you activate if you plan on flashing anything...

The OEM Unlock option doesn't appear until 7 days after the device was first booted on the Exynos version. That might not be the case with your version because the bootloader is locked so the OEM Unlock toggle is redundant.

I've had many phones with locked bootloaders in the past where the OEM unlock appeared in the dev options, so unless this is something new with the note 8. im not sure why its not there..

All the OEM unlock toggle does is allow you to flash a custom recovery so you can then flash custom ROMs only if the the bootloader is unlocked. If the bootloader is locked like on US snapdragon N8s having the toggle is pointless.
If you check out the thread linked above you'll see that a bunch of people with exynos versions that do have unlocked boot loaders are missing the toggle which later appears & disappears. No one knows why yet, all just speculation.
The N8 is the first to have this happen. What a big headache. Hopefully they figure it out. I'm one of the lucky with an exynos N8 without that issue.
yeah, its not a big deal, especially since there is no way to unlock this bootloader at this point anyways...weird that it comes on and off on the Exynos though..

Correct, for our t mobile USA ones, we will never get that OEM Unlock option in any amount of days.

We already have a root, it just wasn't released yet and it seems to be the same as S8, so with similar disadvantages. Expect to be out any day now.

Even if you get the OEM unlock toggle to appear it doesn't mean anything. If you have a locked bootloader the OEM unlock won't unlock it. OEM unlock is just a safety switch.

Oem needs to be unlocked before u can us cf autoroot or any other means of root I have j7 metro no oem unlock option tried to use Odin and cf auto root it failed because the bootloader is locked and can't be unlocked. I know this is for the n8 but I seem to be suffering from the same problem.

Yes there is an OEM unlock option. I know because I discovered It! Simply flash the K2 combination file, when factory binary loads go into the left hand screen, with apps. Click on the settings icon, then enable dev options the usual way. OEM unlock should be there. You may need to toggle it off and on a few times before you get the popup security message.
It makes a change in the system as it should. If you do a factory reset, then reload the factory binary, you'll see that Dev Options are already enabled (saved from last time you unlocked) AND OEM will already be toggled. This means that the unlock sticks!
So there you go. It even changes the OEM line in the .prop.... that being said...
DO NOT TRY TO FLASH TWRP AFTER DOING THIS!!!
(I already tried, the secure boot still is in effect, and you'll have a softbrick until you can re Odin your recovery. )
The OEM unlock may be one part of this, but there's more. Hopefully we are making progress toward the goal of a bootloader unlock!

I know knox will be tripped but there's no reason that I can't use android pay with a non rooted phone surely? I've tried the root checker app as well and that shows that I do not have root.
When I check in developer options it says the bootloader is already unlocked and the slider is to the left for the oem unlock option. I have tried to slide it to the right which factory resets the device but then on going into developer options again it still shows as the same status (bootloader already unlocked with oem unlock slider to the left)
What can I do to get my phone properly back to stock?

Actually there is a good reason why google pay wouldn't work even if the device isn't rooted. There are Payment/banking (and other apps I am sure) require that the device be secure. With the bootloader unlocked the security on your device is severely weakened.
Did you root the phone at all, flash anything to the phone or do anything to modify it at all (something like this as an example). If there was nothing at all done to the phone other then toggling the oem unlock, then it sounds like flashing the proper firmware to the phone, unticking the oem unlock option and factory resetting the phone should work.
If knox is tripped then there is no reversing that. Google searching also shows this would be a likely cause as to why you can not relock the bootloader.. Once knox is tripped it is irreversible (this is because it is an E-fuse), not even flashing stock will not make it go away.
I think your best bet at this point might actually be to have root and then use Magisk to hide root from the apps you want to use. I'm not sure which apps this will work for but it's probably worth looking into since there may be no going back with your bootloader
