Bluetooth audio stopping when screen is off - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Questions & Answers

Hey guys. Ever since I updated my phone on Saturday (update with patch for 1st July), any time input my phone in my pocket the audio to my Bluetooth headphones stops. As soon as I take it out of my pocket and the always on display reappears, the music starts again.
I haven't changed any settings and my headphones worked perfectly before the update. Plus, it's happening with another pair of BT headphones in have, so it's definitely the phone.
Anyone have any ideas?

I wish this had worked. It didn't make a difference. I even tried resetting the cache of the phone in the bootloader. That seemed to work for a few days but it started again this morning

[Q] Annoying automatic play when bluetooth is connected

Whenever I connect my phone to the bluetooth of my car, Poweramp player starts playing some random audio files that it can find on the phone. And typically would not shut up until I explicitly turn it off. The same was happening with my old phone (Droid Incredible) although not sure if it was the same application or some other player.
Is such a behaviour application-specific or is there some global way to prevent any programs from starting up automatically when bluetooth is connected?
At first glance I do not see that in Poweramp settings such a behaviour is configured or that there is a way to disallow it.

There is an option under Poweramp settings for "Resume on Headset Connect" and "Resume on BT A2DP Connect". Both under the headset menu in settings. Have you checked those to see if one might be causing it?

Both options are unchecked and if I read correctly they should be unchecked if I do not want automatic play.
I'll try to check them and see if it helps.

That's why I think there should be some global solution not specific to any application.
Perhaps, one can somewhere choose which application fires up when bluetooth is connected?
At first glance I do not see such an option in bluetooth configuration...
does anyone have a solution on this yet?
Try this:
1) Download Greenify (free).
2) Add the app(s) that automatically start to Greenify.
3) Test.
Greenify puts apps into a "hibernate" mode that disallow it from running in the background until you manually click on them to open. This is meant to help your phone by saving battery that those apps would use, but I could see it being helpful in your situation as well.

Eventually I used a hammer: I have frozen the offending application in Titanium Backup and it no longer bothers me when the phone connects to bluetooth. Of course, the downside is that I cannot use this application at all now but it was so annoying...
Before that I tried to use llama to kill the application automatically when connecting to bluetooth but that worked only in about 20% of cases.

Just tried Greenify. The free version does not "greenify" system application like google music and apparently I was wrong that it was poweramp. I have not tried the paid version yet, not sure if it is worth buying. Back to the hammer solution for now.
I'm fairly sure the "donation" version is the same.
If you're willing to pay for a great app with many uses, then buy Titanium Backup and use their Freeze function to stop Google Music.
My CAR does this. There is a setting in the bluetooth menu of my car called "Auto Play." When turned on, the car will start playing music when I get in the car, when off, I have to manually turn on music.

The free version of Greenify claims that greenifying system applications is an experimental feature of the donation version. I have not tried the donation version though.

I found this at pioloteers.org (Honda piolot forum):
"I have Samsung Galaxy and from what I read on the net it's a big annoyance for a lot of people. It isn't Pilot related, but is frustrating for a lot of folks nevertheless. The solution is to disable auto play on the phone as hollowpoints suggested. Unfortunately, not all android audio players have this setting. The one which I use – PowerAmp – does have it and I was able to disable it. After that Android stock player started auto-playing and you can't disable the auto play on it, so I had to uninstall it. Now the problem is solved."
I have a 2012 MB GL350 and the option is in the media interface settings.

Bluetooth Speaker Popping

Loving the phone so far, but I'm sad to say while connected to my Sony x-7s wireless speaker, I hear a Popping sound about every 15-20 seconds.
I jumped over to my old Note 3 and played the exact same file and the distortion vanished, so I know it's the phone.
Anyone else getting this or know of a workaround? Hopefully it can be fixed by an update.

I'm having the same problem with my V10. Tried it on a Bluetooth headset and a Bluetooth speaker. On WiFi and cellular. Problem does not go away.
same here, only difference is that it happens to certain speaker and not the others.
I've tried on 4 different bluetooth speakers that I have, and on one of them it would sound absolutely horrible and distorted. Tested the same speaker with Note 4 and boom beautiful sound.
I'm lucky that the adapter that I use in the car isn't affected.
Bluetooth audio reminds me of the original OG Pro, which sounded like an over compressed files being broadcast over AM Radio. That problem persisted until it got the KitKat update.
I suspect it has something to do with LG overlooking the need to differentiate compression/bitrates for aptX vs non aptX devices. Its definitely a major letdown, but one likely to be fixed.

streaming on my aptx receiver in the car is perfect, it actually sounded a lot better than my note 4. But yeah, on the cheap portable bluetooth speaker...not so much.
I have the Verizon LG V10 and occasionally hear the popping when connected to my Bose Soundlink III, and cheap BT speaker at work and in my truck (2013 Ford F-150). But what is even worse, it randomly "stutters" on all three as well all the time! I noticed today in my truck that every time it stuttered, the "play" and "pause" buttons flashed on the touch screen--kinda like the phone was telling it to pause and then play very quickly.
Anyone else seeing anything like this? Any ideas to fix? Other than this pretty major issue, I am lovin' this phone! Thanks for any help!

The stutter is killing me as well. I have yet to pin point the exact cause to it, but this is quite unacceptable for a hexacore device.
I use poweramp btway, and I've tried increasing the buffer etc to no avail. At first I thought it was only struggling when google map is running in the background, or when the list of apps are full. But I've tried clearing all recent apps, even without anything in the background it still stutters.
I hope someone figures out what's wrong. Coming from note 4, I'm a little disappointed with all of these random quirks that frankly is unacceptable for a flagship device.

My problem occurs with Google Play music streaming as well as downloaded playlists; the stock LG app with the LG that came with the phone and streaming Pandora. And occurs whether connected to my Bose SLIII, my truck or SoundPal speaker at work... I've tried clearing all recent apps, restarting the music app and restarting the phone... none of that works... Very disappointing and sure hope a fix comes out from somewhere soon!

so I finally rooted and hard reset last night. Two things that I've changed now:
-Unchecked the NuPlayer option under developer mode
-Installed Viper4android
so far...no skipping yet!
So maybe you can try unchecking the Nuplayer option to see if it helps. Also, I suspected it could be some other app like AdGuard that I installed before I rooted. I don't have that anymore since I'm back to Xposed.

I spoke too soon, the issues are coming back again now.
I noticed that the audio will start popping when data is flowing. e.g. when a notification is coming in, a text, an incoming whatsapp chat, a movement in map, etc.
this is frustrating.
Google Now Voice Settings
So I had this problem appear about a week ago, and then I tracked down what I changed. Try disabling Bluetooth Headset in the Google now voice settings. I turned it on hoping it would make OK Google detection better with my head unit. It didn't, it just made the audio pop every 3 seconds.

Yeah, turns out it only reduced the issue, not removed it. I don't understand why it would suddenly appear for me. Worked fine for 6 months, had the Marshmallow update for a while now. Suddenly one day it starts sounding like crap.

I usually reboot when it gets really bad, then it'll be good for some time before it starts popping like crazy again.
Again, this is not a new issue for LG. It's been reported since the day of G2.
I am having the same issue ATT LG V10 not rooted, Google voice Bluetooth headset settings is off. I have the problem when listening with my jaybird headset or 2016 Honda fit, mostly with Google music and beyond pod whether audio is downloaded or streaming. As a Samsung Note user for many years this is disappointing and debilitating!
I cleared the cache for all apps, and the skipping went away. I'm going to see how long it takes before it comes back.
Yeah, had this issue with my LG G3 and now with this phone. Not sure how LG can continually use poor Bluetooth chips. Other devices work fine but this one pops so often, it's painful using my Bluetooth headphones or speakers. It's sad cause I love the amp on it when listening wired.
Fixed (so far) my Bluetooth problems by disabling (check the box) battery optimization on system apps. My solution post http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v10/help/marshmallow-blue-tooth-problems-solved-t3409943/page1

Can't Make or Take Calls

I updated and paired with my Xperia-z3V, and was extremely pleased that I could call with it.
I unpaired and paired with my other Xperia z3v and calls wouldn't go through the watch speaker. It simply dials through the phone itself.
To unpair you have to factory reset. The 2ND phone has all the same apps of the other one.
I powered everything down, powered back up, did the factory reset again, still not ankle to make and take calls with the watch.
Wondering if this isn't a simple fix I'm overlooking. Any help is appreciated.
Open the Phone app on the watch itself and grant permission to make phone calls.
Every permission is granted. Power cycling, even another reset. Still the same. Acts like it did before the update. I can dial with it, but my phone comes on and all sound goes through it. The speaker works when I set the sound on the watch settings. Very frustrating.
Use the phone app on the watch to initiate the call.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Yes, of course I am.
This seems to be a Bluetooth issue. I repaired it to my other phone and it works, but I can't find any settings on the phones that are different.
What makes me think it's a Bluetooth issue is that, while paired to the second phone, when I try to call from the watch, the outgoing call screen pops up on the phone and the "Speaker" option flickers between speaker and Bluetooth device for a second. It always reverts to the phone, but just to the regular phone ear speaker.
It's actually paired and functioning properly with my work phone, which is what I need it for. But it's just frustrating not understanding what's wrong.

Yes, this is checked on both Sony Xperia Z3v phones. Now Nisbet phone works properly to make and take calls. It'll do the command, but voice still defaults to the phone. Often when I receive a call I'll simply grab the phone and answer, but the watch will continue to ring.
Look on your phone side (Xperia z3v), go into your settings and then Bluetooth. This should list all devices paired with your phone. Look at the entry for your Asus Zenwatch. Does it show connected for call audio? Compare what the Bluetooth settings say on your working z3v verses the on that doesn't work. Good luck.
I'm having the same problem. In the bluetooth settings of my iphone 6splus it shows Asus Zenwatch 2 connected when I click it just has option to forget device nothing else.
Having the same problem. Watch's only bluetooth option in settings is scan for nearby devices (which finds none) or unpair device. On the phone's side (Nexus 6P) in my BT settings, it only shows "use for contact sharing." Watch doesn't tell me there's a phone call. Pretty useless IMO. I'm a week over returning it too
Hi guys, Does anybody know why I got a message "unfortunately message+ has stopped" while trying to setup calling feature. Any ideas?

EDIT: NVM, not it worked, i check everything in the settings of BT and everything was ok, i unticked and tick to see, and did a restart. Tried a few attempts to make a call from the watch and nothing, switch the sound off and on, and now is working thru the speaker of the watch with the option of phone in the watch. I just hope for google to implement a button to switch from the watch speaker to the headphones or wireless headsets

Bluetooth Connected - No Sound

Hey everyone,
I've seen a few mentions of this issue but would like to have a thread to specifically discuss it and maybe find a resolution.
After pairing a bluetooth music device for the first time it will play just fine.
Come back some time later, the device reconnects automatically but no sound will play (even though your music app shows that the track is playing).
Turn off bluetooth, or just disable media streaming for the device, turn back on/reenable and sound comes back.
This is an extremely annoying issue that wasn't present on my last Android 5.x.x device. I'll forget about it until I'm driving and then have to wait until I stop to safely restart bluetooth.
Please let's keep this topic reserved for this specific bluetooth issue. If you have a different issue please start another thread.
My device: Spring LG G5 (LS992) on 6.0.1
Notes so far:
Simply restarting the phone doesn't fix it.
Unconfirmed - Happens only after switching bluetooth devices (going from your car, to your home stereo, and then back out in the car). I switch vehicles a lot for my job.
Suggestion here is to clear app data for Google Connectivity Services. Will try today.
Like mentioned in the other topic I might have the same issue on my Nexus 5 (2013) with Android 6.0.1 and parrot carkit. How is your Bluetooth volume on the phone when you start playing music? To me it seemed to be worse when Bluetooth volume was muted actually.

I have the same problem. Came from a G4, which worked fine playing pandora in my car. On my G5, I start pandora on the dash app, it opens on the phone in accessory mode as normal. Everything looks like it's playing ...dash shows what's playing and all, but no sound. I haven't tried the restarting bluetooth/media audio on the bluetooth device settings, but I'll try that after work to confirm it's the exact same problem.
I have been experiencing this issue on my LG G5. I have phone audio, but no media audio. The car display shows whatever is playing on the phone, including the time code as a song advances for instance, but no sound. I have checked in bluetooth settings to ensure both phone and audio are on. I've disconnected and reconnected. It did work 1 time, but that's it. I've had the phone for a little over 2 weeks and its fully updated.
I have the Same issue in my car, everytime i need to disable/Enable Bluetooth to get Sound working.

Bluetooth has been the one problem I have with this phone. I lose connectivity to my Moto 360, my headphones need to be unpaired before I can use them again, it's seriously driving me nuts.
I am having momentary phone audio cut out when using my car BT. The radio will come back on for several seconds and the the phone will come back. I am wondering if the VoLTE function might have something to do with this. I have disabled VoLTE so I can test it although I really have no clue if it is related.
I believe this has to do with having 2 devices connected. The 1st will act as phone connection and the 2nd as audio only. The phone might think for some reason you still are connected to both or you actually have a lot of range in one of them and remains on.
Disabling VoLTE resolved my problem.

First of all let me say that folks are reporting different issues with Bluetooth. Mine was that when connected in my car I would lose phone audio for 10 or 20 seconds repeatedly. The radio audio would come back on and after a while the phone audio would come back.
VoLTE, as I understand it, allows voice and data simultaneouly. I disabled it on my G5 under settings/call/VoLTE. Once you disable it you will no longer see "HD" displayed in you dialer links. My problem resolved completely. I called T-mo this morning and cancelled my replacement handset.

If you disable that, you lose Band 12 in America on T-Mobile, which I need since I drive through some pretty backwoods places where Band 12 is my only way not to switch to Edge.

VoLTE may not even be your related to your problem. I would try disabling it just to troubleshoot.
FYI still having to turn bluetooth off and on very often.
It does only seem to happen when I connect from one device to another i.e. I listen in my car and later that night I use my bluetooth speaker. Phone thinks music is playing on the speaker but no sound from speaker. Turning bluetooth off and back on fixes immediately (after reconnect)

I have Sony xperia z3 and only use Bluetooth with one device and have the same issues. Only started with 6.0 upgrade
I have the same problem on my H850:
When I turn on my headset, it will show "connected to call audio" in Bluetooth settings (my bluetooth is always on due to my Pebble smartwatch). No matter how many times I turn on and off my headset, it will always only connect to call audio, despite the option "use for media audio" being activated. If I unpair it and pair it, it connects to both for this one time, before going back to the previous behavior. If I turn bBluetooth off and on again, it will connect to both call and media audio again for this one time before returning to the previous behavior.
Since it's the intl version, there is no VoLTE option.
Is there a way (settings or using an app) to fix this and force the phone to connect media audio every time?
I have the exact same issue, except that I have an android wear watch.
My only solution so far is disabling call audio for the G5 in the Bluetooth definition, but that really sucks.
Have you found any solution?
This is a known issue with LG G5 and the sad thing is that LG doesn't have a clue. Unpairing and repairing is the only solution until Android 7 upgrade. I went as far as resetting to factory defaults, T-Mobile even replaced my device..same issue. **** SOLVED WITH ANDROID 7 ****
I still have the same issue with it showing as playing with no sound and it continues happening even after the Android 7 upgrade. Issue is intermittent, restarting phone or headset or disabling and reenabling BT are only solutions I've found so far. I confirmed the vol is on high on both device and receiver.
Happens on my Kia Soul, Sony SBH50 and SBH52. The only BT devices I don't seem to have the issue with is my old MW600s, so it may be related to BT version on the headsets. May be related to switching devices sometimes, but I've had it occur when using only one device, but having made a call, or left range with the headset away from my G5. Calls still have audio but Stereo/Media BT profile doesn't operate, even though both ends make it seem as if it does.
Thanks,
Peter

Bluetooth streaming Audio - car stereo

Hi all
Does anyone have any issues streaming audio to their car. I can connect my Mate 10 Pro no problem and take calls, however I can't seem to be able to stream music - using Amazon Music.
I have had a look in developer options and everything is set as default - ie i've not changed them.
Any ideas?
TIA
I can, I'm using a Pioneer AVH head-unit if that matters.
Spotify and the stock Music player plays fine, however sometimes it pauses for about .5 seconds (like it does that every 5-10 songs).
I'm using the BMW OEM headunit. One thing i have noticed is that if oyu go into the options of the paired device, you have Phone, Media and Contacts. The Phone and Contacts are on, no problem, but the media switches on and off as though its trying to connect but fails. Don't know if its the phone or the BMW unit......didn't have any issues with my Nexus 6P though

Yeah, that happened to mine.
Was trying to initiate a call from the HU, but it's not working since the phone switch was turned off automagically.
I re-paired it and it was fine after that. Try to unpair the pair again.

I re-paired it and it was fine after that. Try to unpair the pair again.

My Mate 10 Pro streams fine on Mazda MZD. Sometimes it doesnt show the track/album information. After switching BT of/on its repaired.
Another problem is that the phone always starts the original music app (which is nice but not enough configurable).
I use Poweramp as default player and have to start it manually after killing huawei music.

Had the same issue with audi mmi 3g+ System but restarting the phone resolved it - media connected by itself. I didnt do no unpairing. Same paired device which failed to stream spotify (media kept switching to off when tried to manually set it on) started streaming with no issues after rebooting the phone.
Funny thing is that sometimes bt media reconnects fail when switching car off for couple minutes, like for example you have everything going fine and you stop at the gas station bt media wont reconnect although you left the bt running while away for 5min with contacts and phone connecting fine, but I found a workaround for that stuff - with car swtiched off simply toggle bt off on and it will connect fine after you come back and start your car. This hasnt hapenned on the latest firmware though, but nonetheless I shared my finding since the toggle thing is still a better solution than restarting the phone everytime media connect fails.

On my mate 10 it hapenned only on the first run (bt stream to car stereo). After I started playing Spotify and closed default Music app it always auto starts Spotify when I reconnect to car stereo through bt (Spotify is never closed on my phone but car connect to Spotify no matter if its on play or pause - if its on play music continues on car stereo if its on pause car stereo leaves it on pause but in that situation audio ID loads only when I hit Play on the phone).
Hey everyone, I'm not having any connectivity issues with bluetooth but what I have noticed is the bluetooth audio seems "lower" in comparison to how my Mi Max sounds in my car. Any remedy or solution for that or am I stuck with the low-ish audio I'm getting from the device in the car for the moment?
Hi
I am using to connect to Camry (asia) 2017.... The song plays and can select next track...however, this is the problem that I encounter.
1) the song name does not update when I select the next song... it is always stuck in the first song. ?
2) the volume always go to minimal on my M10. when I switched to bluetooth connect...... ... This does not happen on my Huawei P8, in which when I switch between radio and bluetooth, the phone always remain the same volume scale.
3) I have select the APPmenu but this is always failed when I pair with Mate10...
I have tried to pair in many ways : car to phone, phone to car but does not work for item 1.
Not sure if Mate 10 has issue on other bluetooth devices in other car model. ?
Thank in advance.
I driving Mazda car, and huawei really got a big issue, especially Bluetooth, my previous phone Sony Z2 works fine without any issues while the huawei mate 10 I just changed just had problems just like u guys, for now what I always do is to restart phone every day 1 time, and it works fine for me, but sometimes it have some laggy issue when I was pairing with my headphone, and the Bluetooth signal tbh, weak. Well that's the only solution I can provide to u guys tho
Had the same problem with my mate 10. Head unit is alpine ut-72bt . On the head unit the symbols for network and battery were there but on the display was shown NO UNIT. The music from the phone was not getting thru. I spent 1h pairing repairing , firmware update , reset. Nothing really worked. After I restarted the phone everything begin to work accordingly. Maybe will help somebody.

Same for me when playing music on my car head unit, using any music app. I mostly use Spotify. This car doesn't have this issue with any other handsets.
Same problem for me since last update
Did b142 fix these issues for anyone?
I was having similar issue - couldn't listen to Google Play Music in my Bluetooth headphones, phone and contacts are on, but media won't enable. Got it working by starting the preinstalled music app and running a song in it. After that works fine.
