I just bricked my Vibrant trying to install one rom through Odin. I sent it off to get repaired and should have it back tomorrow.
Which rom should I be attempting to install? I use to install maybe 3-5 roms every time I was going to change or "upgrade" but that gets old.
I'm not sure with the 2.2.1 or 2.3 roms but with 2.2 you can't go wrong with Project V or Bionix.

Those are both great 2.2 roms and they got me through many months of vibrant useage, I have nothing but respect for the devs but they are a little bit outdated simply due to the fact that the teams are working on other projects currently.
Like I said they are good but here is my breakdown (my preferences are to have to to as little as possible on the spot fixes, in a perfect world no fixes would be cool but it would take so so so much work and the Devs that make these roms are already awesome enough to do this in their spare time for us vibrant users. But I do prefer when fixes or tweaks are in the op that are known to be compatible)
NONE OF THIS IS OUT OF ANY DISRESPECT TO ANY DEV, I JUST WANT TO HELP PEOPLE FIND A GOOD ROM FOR THEM.
For 2.2 :
I would say Toxic Crazy 8, They are very fast but as with many 2.2 roms it has a bug where there's no voice mail notification icon. This may be no big deal to you as there are many workarounds including the use of aps like visual voicemail.
Zendroid does not have the voicemail issue but does freeze up and get laggy during heavy use (for me at least).
2.2.1. :
For 2.2.1 Bi-Winning is a solid rom. It hasnt been updated for a while so it may not have all the tweaks of newer roms but it is fast and stable. I personally missed having any skin or smiley's in my sms. This is something that can be altered by a user but I am reviewing based on an out of the flash experience.
Jrafaels Port of Ultimate is awesome! The only thing I had to do was download launcher pro and I was set and stable. Very Fast! super quick on aplication loading!
Froyo Kernels :
For speed and battery life combined, my favorite was immortality 2.2.
The dev has switched to GB now so no more updates but its great and stable as is.
For all out battery and a small sacrifice in multitasking speed Bali, I forget which specific version but its the one that will come with Toxic Crazy 8.
Gingerbread:
I have never flashed a Samsung made rom (JVS, JVR, the upcoming JVT etc..) This is partly due to complication of installation for me as well as being scared off by reading about some difficult bugs in the forum. If I was not planning on buying Tmobiles sgs2 asap I would be playing with them. I really liked explodingboys froyo roms (simply galaxy) as well as EDT's members roms but as I stated I'm apprehensions to attempt a flash. (once i bricked because I missed some op instructions on simply honey)
CM7.1 and Nightlies :
These are less intimidating to try than they seem when first reading the op. Cyanogenmod is really cool and impressive, instead of rebuilding a samsung (or any brands) rom they made their own. Its really high caliber work and I will not be at all surprised if I see Cyanogen mod powering one or more future STOCK Samsung devices.
However, with nightlies you cant dial 911 for an emergency. this is an experimental build so DONT GET MAD AT THE DEV, but it still freaks me out enough to not use it as a daily driver.
my Number 1 ROM is ::::::::: MIUI stock version
I must add that every current version of MIUI is pretty stable and amazing. The reason I want to be stock MIUI for now is because the PowerMod System Enhancer (currently MIUI exclusive) will litterally make your phone about twice as fast and better battery of around 10 to 14 hours depending on usage, some may get more.
I have tried MIUI 3 times and the first two were in june and august of this year. Since then it has become stable enough for use as a daily driver. Play with the themes app for a bit and understand what customization really is
Tweaked kernel V2 is great for speed as well as battery on MIUI.

GPS : It is important to know that many (myself included, ive had it in three vibrants) have a hardware defect that makes GPS not work. From what I can remember from some old forum that i couldnt find today, the GPS chip is touching something else on the inside and it screws it up. There are hardware fixes but much like adding a FFC I am WAYYYY to scared to try that stuff hahah

I have recently swtiched to Simply Stock 2.3.5 ( JVT ) it is wicked fast!! if you follow the directions.. use the BG Bootloaders.. and put them on with Odin 1.85.. format your mounts on each flash ( the cache, system and data) you will be a ok...
hmm well if you managed to brick via odin to the point of having to get a replacement then i don't recommend any of the 2.3 roms based on Samsung since they all require a GB Bootloader for CWR and rainbow fixing.
Froyo recommendations are the same as what the prior posters said. as far as Gingerbread goes i recommend Miui there are currently 3 flavors in the development sub forum Revamped, & Lithium by Nick and his Production 360 Group, and Stock Miui

bionix v and the bali 1.8.8 kernel and ur good to go.
Miui *stock* (based on Android 2.3.5) in my opinion is the best. It's very easily customizable and updated every week! All you have to do is open the updater app to update, no need to fiddle with CWR and no PC necessary... You should at least try it, i'm sure you won't regret it.

First, an explanation of my situation:
I bought a Galaxy Note at the beginning of the summer. All-in-all, I was pretty happy with it. It was a much improved experience over my Atrix, which was in poor condition by the time I switched over.
I wasn't able to root at first as I only had access to a Mac, and there were innumerable issues in doing so - Odin was PC only, WINE ports of it failed to recognize the phone, the Mac equivalent of Odin (I am spacing on its name right now) didn't work with the Note, etc.
When ICS was officially released, I tried to update to it via Kies. Kies on Mac is a ****storm. It's incredibly buggy, toolbars and menus don't display correctly, it has trouble recognizing the device, etc. I was unable to get it to make a backup, but I eventually managed to load the ROM onto it...
... and that's when the real problems started.
My battery life has turned to crap. Everything runs incredibly slow. Everything's super buggy. Apps force-close all the time. My MicroSD card ended up getting corrupted - half of my music disappeared, of what was left only 1/3rd actually worked. I just reformatted my MicroSD, backing everything important up, etc.
I've been dealing with this for around a month now, as whenever I come to the forum I have no idea where to even start to fix this. I'm up for wiping everything and starting over, and I do have access to a Windows XP machine now so that may be easier... but I don't even know where to go from there.

That's why I'm here - I need advice. I need advice as to how to clean up the current mess my phone has turned into and start over. I need advice as to what ROM to try and how to go about loading it. I need advice as to whether to root and how to do so. I need advice as to whether to install a CWM, which one to use and how to go about doing so.
Here is what I am looking for, ordered from most important to least:
Battery life is important to me. I loved how long the battery lasted before my attempted upgrade to ICS... now it lasts maybe 1/3 of the time.
I want something that will work - I want stability. No more constant force-quits of every freaking app.
A smooth, fast UI would be preferable.
Feature packed. I like the thought of cutting edge features of newer (or custom) versions of Android being incorporated - but this is far less important to me than battery life and stability.
My preferred method of installation would be using my Mac - but as I said, Windows XP is a very easy option for me as well. I could also install a newer version of Windows if need be, but would prefer not to go through that...

Get Odin and root your phone...
Download and flash TWRP... http://teamw.in/project/twrp
download a ROM of your choice
boot into the recovery ..wipe--->>cache/dalvik cache/ wipe ROM/factory reset..>then go to the install and flash your ROM...
These are very rudimentary instructions I hope they helped a bit...good luck

Techno is onto the correct answer, unless of course you are truly wanting the stock version back.
Kies and OTA updates are often flawed, and give the end user exactly the type of problems you are stating.
However, if you want a return to stock, the information can be found in the "note super everything thread" located as a sticky at the top of the general note section.
But I do agree with techno, that a root and flash of a quality custom rom is the way to go......g

As to what ROM I want, honestly that's one of the reasons I have been procrastinating so much -- I have no idea whatsoever. There's such an overwhelming number of options out there, of basic flavors (ICS, JB, GB, CM7, etc.) and tens of derivatives of each one made by different people. I have no idea where to even start making such a decision.
I can tell you this much. On my Atrix, I started with the stock Motoblur-Froyo, flashed GingerBlur, disliked it's bugginess but dealt with it for almost a year, then flashed the CM7-based Neutrino. I wasn't very happy with how skimpy the ROM was but stuck with it until I got my Note. I was pretty satiated with the stock ROM, but decided to upgrade to ICS due to the promise of a better UI, increased functionality and especially a faster camera. While my experience with ICS was terrible, I could see myself enjoying a functional, non-buggy version...
Basically, I have no idea what ROM or even what base OS version I am looking for. That said, I do know the criteria that matter to me, as stated prior:
Battery Life
Stability
Smooth UI
Cutting-Edge Feature Packed

That is the best stockish ICS experience you can get and keeps all the functionality of your phone including the spen. He also offers a jellybean ROM but honestly to find the best JB rom for you just read through the threads read and REREAD THE OP of those ROMs..jellybean is fun and cool but not 101% stable yet..people still getting random reboots and some are losing there APN settings..so maybe just flashing ics and playing with those ROMs is best for you for now..FYI the above rom is smooth as silk and great battery life

Flappjaxxx is a fine developer, and he has packed this UCLF6 build with full functionality , and much more.
He is , and will continue to be my top pick for quality builds and performance ...g

I guess I have a few last questions:
What is the best way to root at this point? If I recall, there are multiple ways to root via Odin... is there a specific one you would recommend for my current situation (read: current buggy ICS firmware)? A link would be very much appreciated, as the roadmap thread is a bit... overwhelming with all of the options.
Are there any MODs you recommend I install after I have my new flappjaxxx ROM in place? Will tethering work off the bat? Will all of the Gapps (Gmail, Navigation, etc.) be there for me to use? Will I need to install anything else, or is there any recommendations that you have?

Hello, new to XDA and specifically to Android devices. I love the whole experience with my redmi 5 plus. Just wondering why so many people use the lineageOS. I mean is it really worth it? MIUI looks awesome.
1. What's the huge advantage of using a CUSTOM ROM?2. Will I loose the warranty?
3. What's the success rate of flashing a ROM?
Miui is not bad too (better battery life, one hand mode, gestures, etc.) but I'm afraid there will be spy apps preinstalled in there so I have no choice but to flash custom rom. I think you can revert it to MIUI and not lose warranty. If you have past experience 99%. You have to unlock bootloader first then flash twrp and install su after that your choice if you want to flash roms. I forgot exactly what to do but you have to do additional steps after flashing twrp if you don't want that you can also try redwolf though I personally haven't tried that. Good luck

It depends on the user, some are perfectly fine with MIUI & some still prefer stock android experience like LineageOS, AEX, RR, etc.(It's not just LOS, there's a lot of custom ROMs out there, personally i really don't like LOS coz it's just so plain), Me for example, i've been using MIUI for almost a year on my previous phone Redmi 4 Prime, i really like it that time because its smooth and it has a good battery life. In time i got tired of its UI & i want to try something new. Good thing there's a lot of great Custom ROM devs who maintain these ROMs, a got a good experience with it, at my current situation using a well maintained Custom ROM, i think i'm never going back to MIUI.

It depends on user, I get it.
For me it just feels bad to know that you re not going to get any updates from xiaomi anymore. The only reason I should update in the Future is if Oreo never comes. Nougat is too old.
FYI, the custom ROM that could be said have almost complete functionality is Oreo (LOS or AOSP based).
But per my experience using custom ROM Oreo, battery drain faster than stock miui. I think this is due to the Oreo itself, not sure if later the stock MIUI oreo will have same battery problem or not.
Good thing you will get from those custom ROMs are, almost fully functional Google Camera mod. Mine only have problem with front camera portrait, the rest no problem.
But in stock MIUI, Google Camera mod quite buggy, frequent FC.
Btw, you also could try some MIUI based custom ROM, which should be still Nougat.
You can still get the feel of MIUI with more features, and should be more stable compare with non-MIUI based Nougat custom ROM.

Well according to miui flashing and tooting doesn't void the phone warranty i have personally asked to miui customer care service and they said that flashing or rooting won't cost you your phone's warranty. If you want you can ask tie customer care representative yourself.

I prefer stock android based roms . They are "light weight" and the phone runs faster in my opinion but miui is more stable because there are much more developers to support it . It's a matter of preference of course but now i use Resurrection Remix which is an amazing rom with a lot of customasation features way more than MIUI for example , also RR is also on Android Oreo with the latest security patch .
MIUI is a way faster and you will get Regular update.
Use MIUI and root it with magisk.

TBH custom ROMs are still going bit rough for this family of phones from xiaomi.
i recommend ForkLOS(los_fork-miatoll), and arrowOS(ArrowOS), WaveOS(WaveOS - miatoll) as no frills ROMs with good stability. just dont use tap-to-wake and doze functionalities, since they cause freeze/reboots.
and yesterday LineageOS put out their initial official build(LineageOS - miatoll)
There is official LineageOS from today.

Honestly, every custom ROM has minor to major bugs that are annoying as hell. I'm not being unappreciative but with how hard it is to flash and setup roms these days (backing everything up externally because we need to format device) it's not worth trying out roms for our device imo. They're pretty much all just "I want to be a pixel device" - which isn't a bad thing but there's not much difference between them and they all share the same set of bugs and/or features. I always end up coming back to eu miui roms simply to have a fully functional device.

I'm used to installing, testing and adapting custom roms for android. I even used to write one "minimoto" for the old Moto Droid series back when I had more time.
Nowadays, I'm a busy dad who can't spend lots of time testing things out, so I'm reaching out for help in finding a good, minimal, stable rom for my MI A3.
Don't care what version of android it is, just stability and minimalism/battery are all that matter.
So far I've tried
- CRDroid - fast, minimal, excellent battery life, but with no disrespect to the developers who are in the early stages with this port, it's got way too many bugs (like no GPS, website forms failing for weird reasons, busted playstore requiring manual fixes........).
- EvolutionX 6.22 - a weird mix of very fancy configurable UI elements, but missing apps like camera, and lots of bugs. Gallery doesn't work at all, phone hard locks apps like signal at least once a day, requiring a reboot. A bit slow, and again with no disrespect to the developers, too buggy for daily use.
Can anyone help me find something that just works, and has the minimal amount of services/apps pre-installed?
Failing that, any stable rom and I'll use ADB as root to remove the clag myself.

Now testing pixelexperience, and it appears so far to be very solid.
Fast, has working GPS and camera, no gallery app, but installing google photos fixes that.
@thingonaspring be on the lookout for lack of updates, one of the maintainers declared the ROM as EOL'd but I'm not sure if someone else picked it up.
Checking back in. It's defintely pixel experience for the win.
29% battery use in a day, no crashes.
Admittedly I didn't use it much, but that's just a superb result.

I hear you on the lack of updates. As long as the security layer updates itself, I'm not inclined to worry too much.
I do wish I had enough time to maintain my own rom again. Maybe in a few years when the kid starts college......
@thingonaspring which one of the many PixelExperience versions did you test? How is testing going? My gf's Mi A3 stock has many bugs and I'd like to get a custom ROM on it for her. Is the process easy enough (bootloader unlock, recovery, flash)? Any guide you followed I could use too?

There are still quirks to this rom, I had to switch off adaptive battery (the default) as I was missing loads of notifications from Signal app, and it's crashed once or twice requiring a reboot, but nothing as bad as I've seen from other MI A3 custom roms.
I had a bit of a journey figuring out the flashing process. It turns out the trick is to ignore the slot a/b stuff and just flash everything everywhere. So flash recovery to slot a+b, the flash the rom to slot a+b, and wipe the data partition (factory reset, all data lost). To guard against that, copy any data you can to SDCard, or better still a PC, before flashing.

Confused by slot a/b and recoveries
Previous android phones I've used - and there have been a lot of them - have used TWRP for recovery, and that's allowed backup of system+data. You then flash a rom to test, decide it's not for you, restore the system+data, job done. The MI A3...

TL;DR - it's not like twrp recovery on older phones. The recovery+kernel both occupy the boot partition, so it's more a case of flashing the recovery+kernel that ships with your chosen rom via fastboot, then using that new recovery to install the rom itself, from a zipfile on sdcard.
In this process having an a/b slot for the boot and system partitions is just an unnecessary confusion. Flash the a+b recovery both to the same version, then do the same with the new custom rom (flash A, reboot, flash B, reboot), then clear data and get on with your life.

I've had PixelExperience installed for a couple of days and it seems to chew through a LOT of battery. have had to leave it plugged in while at work. also hate the Camera Go app. missing a lot of features

Nowadays, I'm a busy dad who can't spend lots of time testing things out, so I'm reaching out for help in finding a good, minimal, stable rom for my MI A3.
Don't care what version of android it is, just stability and minimalism/battery are all that matter.
So far I've tried
- CRDroid - fast, minimal, excellent battery life, but with no disrespect to the developers who are in the early stages with this port, it's got way too many bugs (like no GPS, website forms failing for weird reasons, busted playstore requiring manual fixes........).
- EvolutionX 6.22 - a weird mix of very fancy configurable UI elements, but missing apps like camera, and lots of bugs. Gallery doesn't work at all, phone hard locks apps like signal at least once a day, requiring a reboot. A bit slow, and again with no disrespect to the developers, too buggy for daily use.
Can anyone help me find something that just works, and has the minimal amount of services/apps pre-installed?
Failing that, any stable rom and I'll use ADB as root to remove the clag myself.

Bro, I'm using Corvus OS 12L. Can't believe this is more smoother and faster than stock rom. Best rom ever. Better than pixel experience it has no customisation, but the corvus has a lot.
couldn't find corvus, but I've settled on this now

And it's good. One tip, goto settings->battery and disable the pixel battery plan, just use the default one. Without that change I had apps hanging and deep-sleeping, causing me to miss messages from signal/whatsapp.
Battery is fine - I get 2 days out of it with no drama.
