OS update for Stylus 2 Plus - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First, I know that my phone is old but I'm not a power user. However, its performance is starting to get "clunky". I want to move the apps I do have installed to my SD card to free up some internal memory. Problem is, I'm only running 6.0 and you need 7.x at a minimum in order for this option to be available. I Googled some Youtube videos on updating to Nougat but my phone doesn't seem to have the capability to do so. Does the phone have to be rooted first? Otherwise, can somebody walk me through the process? My phone doesn't seem to have the System Update utility that's mentioned in the videos I've watched.

[Q] New Viewpad 7

hi, i am new on the forum so hello to everyone. I joined as i have recently been given a Viewpad7 as a present. i only wanted a 7 inch tablet and didnt have the funds for an ipad/transformer etc, they were a bit on the large size.
i have read a bit about the device and have had a chance at trying it out at one of our local shops. it certainly was a lot faster and more sturdy that the storage options 7" device.
i may be interested in rooting the device and have read up a bit about it on various threads on this forum. i get 50% of what is being said but 50% goes over my head at the moment.
i have an htc android phone and one of the things that is really frustrating is the fact that the memory fills so quickly if you add too many apps. i have been told rooting a device will allow more apps as it allows install to the disc rather than the internal memory...i am presuming this will be the same for a tablet allbeit most have a larger internal memory??
i have heard that the android 2.2 is not great with tablets as it is designed really for the moblie phone? is this the case for the viewpad?
i am presuming that a rooted tablet can use slightly amended operating systems with some tweaks?
can anyone tell me what other benefits there are...
Gingerbreak sounds a good one from what i have read as it is based on the android 3 software...
if there isnt a need to root it i will carry on as is but if there are a lot of benefits i might as well root it when i first get it before i load anything onto it...i will have to learn some of the jargon like 'adb shell' to make sure i dont end up with a brick.....what are the risks in rooting and how often do things not turn out better?
sorry for all the questions....
atb
forgot to ask is there a youtube guide to rooting where i could watch someone going through the stages etc
Hi
Here is the link to video guide for rooting viewpad 7 (or variant like mine - commtiva lynx n700): http://www.techofweb.com/technology/root-viewsonic-viewpad-7-superoneclick.html
With rooted system you can actually do a lot of tweaks like flashing altered core, which will give you possibility to overclock a bit, it will also give the ability to install applications which can require root like Titanium Backup (total backup of all applications, their settings and data) and others.
With rooted device you can also change how your desktop looks, changing even notification icons or dialogue windows or buttons.
Then as you mentioned rooting opens a way to use cores which allows you to store applications, data and java machine cache to a partition on SD card (ext2, 3 or 4) and this will give you a way to install lot more apps than on non rooted tablet.
I can see a lot of benefits in rooting tablet, I have done it 2 days after purchasing n700. Installing new roms will not always give you a stable, fast working tablet, there are reboots sometimes for no apparent reason, there is sometimes a lot of fun flashing another rom and restoring all your apps and data and rearranging desktop to how is was.
What are the risks - if you start wisely and flash proper recovery first and do a system backup first - chances to brick your device permanently are slim. But if you start flashing a device with a new rom right away - you may end up with a non working device and a need to find a stock rom. Because before you can flash rom you must flash recovery, which gives you the ability to flash a rom designed for your device. I haven't read of anyone who bricked tablet when trying to root it.
I've heard about some stack with non working rom (boot loop) and asking for stock one. But there is always a way to flash non altered rom for your device (after flashing recovery which is kind of application like bios but without all those options to change device settings).
But behind all this, which is for altered pads lovers just a fun - you will have a device which is far more functional then the stock one.
Have fun

hi...i think i will root it at least, but not sure if i will bother with any of the roms. doesnt look like there are many available for this tablet, although i may be looking in the wrong places...
atb
rooted it...use the one click but it wouldnt do it with the latest so i used one of the older versions and it did it...
now...now that it is rooted can i get rid of any of the clutter like the stock browser and any of the other stuff i wont use as i will download other apps??
will titanium backup copy the whole system for me, i have seen a post about backing up the viewpad but it was using the command prompt and i am not confident doing this...what is the easiest way of doing a full backup in case i brick it??
atb
another question i have is will rooting the pad now mean that i can save more apps onto it...it is showing about 80mb of space left at the moment...if so how do i get it to save everything to my sd card?
atb
Another point....now i am getting into this device. i have copied some of my films onto disc to put in this... some mp4 some h.264 [i think] files both with mp3 audio but the player on the viewpad just says it cant play them...it hasnt opened any video files yet!!!!
atb
nothing seems to be working here...i have emailed viewsonic support and have now been told this unit only supports 3GP playback????????
atb
Install a better video player app, I use rockplayer myself to play avi files.
Further I would recommend you search and read the forums, there is a lot of info to be found and most of your questions will already have been answered in the past.
have now tried rockplayer but still no joy. it will play small files up to 70mb but anything bigger seems to bring the sorry cannot play video warning... have tried altering some of the settings in the 3GP format but still no joy. have also noticed it wont paly any of the youtube videos through the app at HQ, but it will play them all at a lower quality...really did want this to hold films to play on the move but as yet cannot seem to get them to play no matter which palyer... not sure if it may be a problem with the unit?
will do some more reading!!

[Q] I Need Direction to my Answer

So after signing up and watching the video, it makes sense that my answer is somewhere on this site but it is a bit confusing on where to find it.
My Device: Nook Tablet 16GB with version 1.4.0 (just received for Christmas so thought it odd to have 1.4.0)
What I want to DO : I want to root the device by booting of an 16GB micro SD card every time i turn on the nook, without messing up the current Nook OS it comes with from the factory so if i had any warranty issues all i have to do is take out my SD card and it would boot into Nook OS like it would when I bought it.
My Question: Is that possible? If so; how? Can someone provide a link in the forum to the instructions?
Additional Information: I have watched video's by googling, but none that I have found are to install and use from SD, they are all showing how to install on the Nook device.
I am also searching the threads, but have not yet came across instructions on what I want to accomplish.
Lastly all I want to get additionally by rooting is things like YouTube, Android Market, So which ever O.S. I need for that I am fine with using
The simplest way to get create a CM10 SDcard can be found at http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/18/cm10-0-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet/.

[Q] [q] zte zephyr z752c

I just purchased ZTE ZEPHYR from Straight Talk for my grandson (his ended up in the ocean )
it says it supports SD card but I cant move/put apps to it, only manually move pictures
there are apps out there to do this but require phone to be rooted
how should/could I handle this?
KK won't work like that without root. SD card strictly for media, not applications. Might try app 'apps2sd' but probably won't work without root access.
please Help
I purchased two of these ZTE Zephyr Z752C phones for my children. I have also ran into this problem. I have been looking into rooting and flashing, but have not been able to find any files for this phone. I checked the compatibility for the lollipop through upgrade android. Two components were over 100%, but the ram is only at 93% so it says not compatible. I would even be willing to go to an older than kit kat as long as it has the option of the apps to sd. I also have downloaded and tried to override the adb location sets but it did not work. Any information or help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you in advance.

Pros and Cons updating Moto E XT1021 first gen to Android 5.1 Lollipop

Hi,
I am an owner of one Moto E XT1021 first gen phone. Right now it has Android Kitkat 4.4.4 on it.
This morning warned me of system update available to Android Lollipop 5.1. (and this in Romania).
I know many of other people like to update to the new OS. But I doubt in Moto E first gen is good this. And previously read on different articles about the main problem with the storage for this Moto E fist gen because of the 4GB available on main storage.
I open this thread because I didn't found some other thread treating only this subject (pros and cons about Lollipop update on Moto E firstgen).
I wait for opinions especially from those already making the update and if there is a good life or bad life after the update.
What are the pros for updating, what is working and what is maybe wonderful ... and what are the cons, what is not working and maybe even blocking and annoying about Lollipop on Moto E firstgen?
Thanks.
Well... I had just over 500MB of internal storage free. Went ahead with the update. After restarting, the internal storage was full. So I've performed a factory reset and it's downloading updates to the stock apps... 277MB left after that! Cleared caches... 520MB left... That's with no apps installed other than the stock stuff, updated. Forget Facebook etc...
I wouldn't recommend it at all! Updated it today and it's terrible. You just don't have any free space at all, not even able to update apps... Only have WhatsApp on it, and still it whines about out of space when trying to update an app....
It's ridiculous actually, that they release an update like this
Im on this situation also. What can we do now? Root and install a custom rom?
Thanks for your responses.
What I supposed seems to be confirmed. The main memory storage problem... .
But... is there a Pro reason for updating that maybe is worth the annoying continuously warning about 'out of space'? ...or not?
RevengeFNF I think you responded to yourself.

Do not update. Updating from KitKat to lollipop via official ota is gonna make the phone suck a hell lot. You'll be out of memory as lollipop has the $hitty ART runtime which will eat up all your storage space as the dalvik cache is gonna be huge. Only update if you plan to root and have a huge sd card. Or simply unlock bootloader (I think you're out of warranty now so no worries) and flash cyanogenmod 12.1. It's the most fluid lollipop rom out there right now.

So there is also a possibility to update and after ... to root.
Because actually I have a 32GB sd card on it.
What would be the next steps to do after the root in order not to have so big problems with storage, even if is this lollipop eating so much with his runtime and cache... ?
Because sometimes I prefer the OS developed by the producer, in therms of stability etc, etc...

Update first. Then upon unlocking bootloader, your phone will factory reset. After that you can root it simply by flashing supersu zip. Then you can use link2sd to link your apps to sd card 2nd partition. There are many guides on xda for that purpose. I too have stock right now and I have loads of free space on internal as all my 250 apps are linked to sdcard.
PS. You need link2sd plus to be able to fully link your apps to sd card. It's very cheap, less than $2.

Has anyone really managed to root 1021 on 5.1 stock?
I had it already unlocked,
I can't boot TWRP recovery or even flash it.
Tried also CWM recovery from here around, same thing.
Any infos please?
after many tries and ways I managed to push TWRP recovery and supesu.
The way varies a bit from the usual.
Turn off phone manually,
execute:
fastboot.exe flash recovery twrp-2.8.1.0-condor.img
or whatever you name the recovery image.
Let it waiting
Insert usb cable
boot into bootloader menu manually, volume down and power
Then the comand executes
Shows the usual Mismatched partition size, its ok for custom recovery
Now select Recovery mode manually with buttons
after a while, I think little less than a minute, finally TWRP recovery starts, yolo follows etc..
guess you know the way to install SuperSU then
I booted, installed link2sd, rebooted., linked my apps etc normally works till now
:good:
Wanted to just boot recovery.img but then I decided that probably 5.1 is the last update and got me down on it.
Try with boot recovery and please comment if so

Moving pre-installed apps to SD-card (ROOTED)

Hi, i'm running a Moto E with android version 5.1, and since updating to this version of android I have had constantly so little space on the internal memory that I can't even update the pre-installed apps even though I have as good as as no other apps installed on the phone as well as zero images, videos, music or any other media files.
Therefore I've spent a few days trying to figure out how I could move the pre-installed apps to my SD-card.
So, I've rooted the phone, installed the program called Link2SD and I tried using that program to move the apps. Yet it gave me a warning:
"Failure
pkg: /data/app/com.google.android.apps.maps-1/base.apk Failure
[INSTALL_FAILED_INVALID_INSTALL_LOCATION]"
Then I found that it seems I also need to create a so-called "second partition" on my SD-card, but I've not yet managed to find a tutorial on the internet that worked for me.
Since then I've tried 6 or 7 other similar programs with no luck, in the process reading somewhere that it actually couldn't even be done on android versions 4.0 or later. Is this true? Could someone be a kind gentleman (or -woman) and guide me through this? That would make me very happy indeed.
Thanks in advance
Simon

It's better to install custom rom of android 6.0 + and flash gapps pico or nano and in android 6.0 + you can format your external SD card as internal so, it'll help to use all on external storage and gapps pico also takes minimum space so you definitely saved you internal storage to be full
if you don't know how to do that stuff then you can ask...!
