1.i already have an xperia play and we have 2 laptops at home as well as a desktop pc so would any of you think that it would be suitable for me to buy this eeepad?
2. should i rather wait for the eepad transformer prime infinity 4g/3g? is it significantly better?
3. Similar to other android devices, does this require unlocking/rooting to enhance the experience or is it sufficient enough out of the box?
4. can this replace a laptop? As in, work in the same way, allow me to use msn and access websites with ease (and speed)?

I think you've not gotten a response because your questions are too vague.
I've had five different Android tablets over a year or so. The ASUS Prime is the best overall for me. It does replace a netbook easily and a laptop for many applications, but not all. I don't want to pay for 3G or 4G, so I've had WiFi only. I did root my first Android tablet just for the fun of it, and to have the experience of doing it. For me, I have no need to unlock or root my Prime. It does what I want right out of the box. Any Android tablet can browse the internet. The Prime does it quite well. Be warned that any non-Windows browser can run into compatibility issues on some web sites. Some web sites are just plain crappy and no tablet can browse them. It's likely only a Windows tablet would be the mosy compatible for the web. You decide.
Bye.

So there are some website I can't use with my prime? Thanks a lot by the way. How does MSN work on the prime though? I mean, doesn't it only handle one application at once? And please tell me what makes it better than a laptop and any bad points. Thanks again

You can use the ps3 controler with prime with some games;msn works great, there's a lot of msn application on market for free...
Why u don't try prime?u gonna like it...
If you prefer to wait for tf700;this new transformer was better screen and better wifi and gps signals;but the new prime's lotes loock to be free of bugs;just by the units that start with c3 serials...

1. Do you need another light computing device? Do you want one with very long battery life? If so the Prime would fit these needs.
2. You are the thousandth person to ask this question. If you aren't sure then wait and try them both. If you can't wait go buy the Prime if you think you want it. In any case make up your own damn mind, don't rely on strangers to decide for you.
3. You don't need to root. This tablet provides a basically pure Android experience.
4. Yes.
5. I dunno. You could use a PS3 (or knockoff) bluetooth game pad, but unless the Xperia allows its controller to be used by other devices it probably won't work.
6. Maybe, but probably not. The truth is, most tablets similar in dimension to the Transformer Prime and with similar battery life won't give you a full desktop Windows experience despite some of the things people are saying. These devices will be more like Windows Phone 7 in that they will be locked down and limited to apps in Microsofts (currently) tiny app store. The tablets that will give you a full windows experience and allow you to install desktop apps will be more like laptops, which means heavier, shorter battery life and more expensive.

What can be achieved with full windows that can't with Android?
Sent from my R800i using XDA
Hello, I'm new here. I just bought 2 Kindle Fire HDX tablets for my kids. The seller mistakenly sent me 2 HD units. I'm sending them back and will wait a few weeks for the seller to get HDX units. Over the last week I was able to use these HD tablets and get a feel for them. My family is pretty familiar with Android OS'es and even my 1 and a half year old uses our Android phones all the time. So, the Amazon OS was a little bit uncomfortable at first. But the main issue I had with these HD's is the way they drive you to download content and make it to where you very easily end up buying stuff you didn't want to buy, as opposed to the Google Play Store approach which seems to be more relaxed.
The Fire HDX's has better processing power than the Google Nexus 7, which is the main reason I went HDX vs the Nexus 7. The speakers are better too and maybe the colors on the screen also. But the rear-facing camera of the Nexus 7 and the portrait mode-design vs the Fire's landscaping mode-design is another consideration.
After spending the last few hours reading on rooting the Fire HDX, I'm not even sure I'll be able to do that depending on which firmware version my HDX'es end up coming with. If they have older FW versions, I guess I should not update anything before first rooting them, but if they have the later FW version, I won't be able to root them at all.
My questions so far are these...
* Once rooted, what can I do with my HDX?
* Do most people install a custom ROM on their HDX once rooted?
* Can I have a fully functional Android OS running on my HDX?
* Do some people leave Amazon's OS on the HDX and only install the Google Play Store?
* If I install an Android OS, would it have full functionality, like the Chrome browser, Voice commands, etc?
Based on the uncertainty of rooting the newer FW on the HDX, do you think it would be better for me to settle with Nexus 7 tablets instead?
Thank you for your time, I appreciate it.
Kind Regards,
Neo
Get the LG Gpad 8.3 don't waste your time here.
Sent from my KFSOWI, 11.3.2.1, rooted, Amazon stuff replaced with Google Services.
Thanks for the reply, but what if the 7" screen and the price-point is more in-line with what I need? Just looked up the LG Gpad and it looks nice, but I guess I'm just surprised to hear such a definitive warning to not waste time here. Do you mean the HDX is a waste of time (rooting and flashing it), or the Nexus 7 is a waste of time?
Thanks,
Neo

The HDX currently doesn't have any root in the latest update. If you want ROM support immediately, get a Nexus. If you can wait, get a Kindle.
Sent from my One X using Tapatalk
The HDX may never get a real ROM, and if the purchased device comes with an unrootable version 13.3.2.1+ you will be stuck with Amazon's garbage for who knows how long. That is why I recommended the gpad. The G-pad isnt the only alternative. The 2013 Nexus 7 is the same size & price point, has a much better *everything* and is plenty fast.
Sent from my KFSOWI Running The Kindle-Water Beta 1 ROM
I concur with Mineturtle33's advices--Nexus 7 is the hands-down choice if one wants a pure Android experience. I bought the Nexus 7, but I would never spend my own money to buy--nor recommend--a KFHDX. The only reason I have one is that it was given away to me, by someone that was frustrated and dissatisfied with its locked-down portal to Amazon's ecosystem. He wisely replaced it with a Nexus 7, and he's much happier now without any regret. The drawbacks of the FireOS outweigh any possible hardware spec advantages IMO.
Thanks for these great answers, helps flesh out the options for me. It makes sense that though the HDX has better specs in the area of processor and speakers, the Amazon OS's restrictive manner makes it a machine that you will want to flash to Android...and if that is not an easy thing, or may never be as satisfying as a native Android unit, I think going native Android may be the way to go. I appreciate the insight and thank you all for chiming in.
Kind Regards,
Neo

You can patch in Google Play without removing Amazon, which will give you chrome and voice commands and Google Now and the rest.
I'm still one of the lucky ones that has root. Mine has never updated itself. I love this little tablet. I spend most of my time in android but then use all the Amazon services that prime offers (like prime video)

Often overlooked, a glaring hardware deficiency is the lack of GPS and magnetometer for the majority of KFHDXs (non-4G)--rendering many offline-navigation and location-dependent apps and services useless.
A rear camera is also an essential and standard feature with most tablets nowadays--not available with KFHDXs. Thus, limited to taking selfies only, and scanning QRcodes and barcodes would be awkward and cumbersome if not impossible.
US$200+ for a tablet without these standard capabilities, no matter how good the CPU and speakers specs may be, is just not worthwhile. It's like buying a sports car, without the headlights and reverse-gear, which can only be driven within one particular state. This may be suitable for some, but the KFHDX is way too compromising and restrictive IMO, especially when there are other more capable contenders on the market. Rooting is secondary when the fundamentals are not available in the first place...

Do what? The HDX has a front and rear. Heck the light is even really bright on the rear cam.

If I'm not mistaken, it's only the 8.9 version that has a rear-facing camera, the 7 only has a front facing camera.

It sounds like you are pretty set against the kindle. Now don't get me wrong. I wish I had done more research before grabbing one on a whim, but here's my brief experience so far.
@NeoRio , I picked up a 7" HDX less than a week ago with the intention of rooting it before doing researching on its rootability. Luckily, my brand new HDX shipped with the version that is rootable. I never enabled WiFi on the amazon side, immediately rooted it and installed the Gapps ROM. The newest version has all amazon stuff removed, including auto updates. I never boot into the Amazon side and use all the Google apps just fine (aside from maps...it doesn't work properly for me). Its not perfect but works just fine for me. The issue is, theres no way to know which version of software yours will ship with, but I just wanted to share my experience.
The only reason I'm keeping this thing is because of the amazon instant video. It looks amazing. If I didn't have prime though I'd have gotten rid of this thing long ago. A lot of the apps made for it seem to be buggy and behind in updates. And the lack of gapps really sucks

So do the dual-use setup (both Google Play and Amazon). You can keep Amazon instant... AND use GApps.

It's heavily dependent on the intended audience. Kindle Fire HDX is meant as a multimedia machine, and occasional Skype client, not a "do-everything" tablet. It plays games beautifully (both Amazon and Google Play, if patched).
If I want camera and nav I have my smartphone. My tablet is my second screen, with better text entry (bigger keyboard), usually running off my phone's WiFi hotspot.
Or to put it this way: if you want a do-everything (i.e. SUV), buy an SUV (a phablet, perhaps). Don't buy a sports car and moan about lack of cargo and passenger space and how it's not an SUV.

It's only 4-6 GB depending on how big you set your partitions. You can put at least ONE ROM slot on there.
Point is I'd rather not. Anyway like I said, I like it for the Amazon videos, however ill probably never buy another. Even if we get root back the OS will always be outdated and we could lose root at any moment

Hey there guys, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the best Android TV device is on the market. Only catch, it has to be rootable. I do not really care if it is a dongle or some other kind of unit. As long as it is rootable, and runts 4.2 + android.
Any suggestions or ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Anyone?
Best Android TV
Hi. The best on my opinion is the Razer Forge, if you plan to play games on top hardware developed for Android and enjoy 4k streaming(full HD). About rooting possibility, don't know yet but almost all devices like these allow it if not now, early will.
Forgetting my advise you won't fail buying a Minix X8 H Plus... Its 4k even.
Best regards!

I bought a Tronfy MX-IV, looking at some of the other boxes it has the same design as the Beelink. Quite satisfied with it. Runs 4.4.2 with Kodi 14.2, 4k support. But i do recommend buying an airmouse. Most of these boxes come with a simple IR remote.

The G Box Q is an older MX2 Dual Core System.
Depending on what you need I'd go with the following in this order.
Google Nexus ADT-1 <- GET THIS
nVidia Shield TV <- Or that
If you want to Game! since these both have the nVida Tegra 4 GPU, and you can hack the ADT-1 to use the nVidia Service to play Half-Life 2 in it
On the Chinese side....
Minix Neo x8-H Plus <- Probably the BEST DEVICE you can get for ~150.00€ GigE, 802.11ac, Hardware decode of h.265 >2160p*
Beelink S82 Plus (Or any other Generic S82 Plus [2G/16G] Device you can find. Amlogic S812 SoC) <- Again these should be slightly cheaper though they are S812 SoCs they lack a number of features such as GigE 802.11ac and Hardware decode.
Slightly cheaper still are the current dead-end products such as the MXIII, S82 / S89 - S802 SoC Boxes. The "Trick" here is to miss the 1G/8G Units and, go straight on for the better 2G/8G, which have 802.11 a/b/g/n, and Bluetooth. These all have Arm Mali GPUs which are great, but not really in the same league with nVidia. If your just want a cheap efficient replacement for that HTPC then these are the right Boxes for you.
*NOTE You have to make sure your getting the *-H Plus version the lower Plus version with out the "H" only does Software decode >720p.
You'll note it in the slight price difference. In the end its about what you're willing to pay up font for!
If you're waiting for an Android TV Device, wait for the Nvidia Shield Android TV. It will be the most powerful device there, and it will also be able to output 4k and 7.1 surround sound. I have the Razer Forge TV, and while it's nice, I don't have Netflix Support.

Forge can run Kodi, as well as the Nexus Player, so I'd assume the Shield TV can as well. Though I'm returning my Forge TV, as the No Netflix has really gotten to me.

This guy is giving sound advice and seems to know what he is talking about.
I have bought several devices and have come to find that MINIX has the best boxes and makes the most progress with them. Plus it seems to have the biggest development community pumping out ROMS and early releases of firmware.
I currently have both and MINIX x8-h and a MINIX x8-h plus. I normally keep them rooted and on the latest FinlessBob ROM. They play everything I throw at them, from locally stored videos, to YouTube, to Amazon Prime or Netflix, or other less talked about streaming apps.

Can you play Netflix in HD on those Boxes? What about Google Play Movies?
I don't think I've ever seen a build.prop from a Minix Box yet. But, for the rest of those Amalogic Boxes... Including the newer k200 (S812 SoC's). The Line:
media.amplayer.widevineenable= has been set to false. The upshot here is that Google Play Movies WILL NOT WORK, until you flip that bit to true, and reboot.
As to Amazon Prime... I wasn't able to get it working on my MXIII... A case of to many inter-operating Apps.. Install this, to install that so that App A) can call upon App b) (The Player), to work... Oddly enough the Kodi add-on just WORKS! Even with HD stuff... As for Netflix though? I'm not a customer of theres just yet.

Good questions, but my answers my not be the most fulfilling. When I first tried Netflix, I was using a friends account and did not specifically test HD playback. I do not use Netflix at the moment, so I'm not able to test again.
As for Amazon Prime i followed the app (a) to app (b) stuff and I think the way it works now is when I click on the app icon it actually takes me into the browser and allows me to select the movie I want to play and then it opens in MX Player.

Yeah this to me seems wrong on soo many levels... I shouldn't have to jump though hoops just to watch something. It also doesn't do much to help when the stuff they have (Amazon Germany), is third-rate junk at best, and isn't even worth the One off payment of 50€ per annum at worst. Thankfully my two-week cooling off period is about to close soon ( I think tomorrow, or Thursday IIRC)... I shall definitely be making sure to cancel my 30 Day Trial ASAP!

I hear you! I think its important to note, that this is a problem caused by Amazon tho, not the device manufacturer. Amazon does not have a very effective way of accessing prime videos on Android. I use prime because I do a lot of shopping on Amazon, so to me the movies are a bonus and now that I have it set up the right way, it really isn't too hard to use.

But, it is Amazons problem... The world is moving the hell away from MicroSoft's Silverlight as fast, as it can... Perhaps you might have heard that Goggle finally started removing NPAPI from Chrome... The bit that made Silverlight work on it? And, we're talking about PC's here now, NOT Android!
Besides I have to ask myself... If I must use something as bad as the MX Player (As more in what it devolved into, then what it used to be!), to render Amazon Prime in the first place.... Why even bother with any DRM in the first place? And, IF I needed such a Renderer, to, get this working... (Something that truly escapes me!), This might explain to my why I'm otherwise unable to use it outside of XBMC/Kodi. Which does work.
But, I suspect the "Difference" between you, and I is that you're using Amazon.com (US) - With the best Content going... While I'm on Amazon.de (Germany), - Which only has utter CRAP on it! As to the other "freebees" I don't own a Kindle, and I don't need any Free Shipping from them either. I joined this "venture" from the other-side as a VOD Provider with other goodies tossed in. Perhaps that was my failing here...
I have two MXQ android tv boxes in the house and they're working great, I also have rooted firmware installed on them which also includes gamepad support but I haven't tested that as I brought the mxq solely for using kodi.

Yes this device is not bad. Tronfy is also a tv box brand not that hot. Mind if i ask where did you offer it?
As i see a thread about Minix Neo X8-H. The tv box comes with an M1 air mouse. Many uses for the air mouse. Light and with great material.
So if MX-IV comes with one, that's perfect
The Tronfy MXIV doesn't come with an air mouse, but those are pretty cheap. Aside from that, it's a great box. Just waiting for Lollipop firmware and it will be perfect (as the Android TV Play Store and a lot of the apps are 5.x only).
The Mi Pad 4 is missing DRM, so for example Netflix won't work in HD. That's a real bummer for a media device like this one. Is this fixable with Lineage OS or is it a hardware thing, that can't be changed or tricked?
Most probably not, some oneplus devices (like my 3t) are shipped with support for widevine level 3, and not widevine level 1 which is required for HD. Oneplus offered to "upgrade" some oneplus 5 or 5t to widevine level 1 but users had to send their devices to oneplus so that drm keys could be installed.
This is not something that every one can do.
I searched a little longer for an ultimate answer. There are two major things I learned:
1) there are devices from Xiaomi which have L1 widevine. My theory is, that this could be the global versions, but I don't know if there will be a global version of the Mi Pad 4.
2) for some devices it is possible to fake the widevine L1. There are some Lineage OS ROMs which integrated this, but therefore we need a maintainer.
So it doesn't look very good.
I just received my Mi Pad 4. It has MIUI 9.6.8.0 Stable.
Even though I had to install netflix through apkmirror, it worked perfect and the image quality is crisp HD. Same for Amazon Prime. Am I missing something?

Could you upload screenshot of this app ? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo
As you can see Widevine Level L3 & ClearKey CDM 1.0 are available (at least on my device).
I tested the video quality with Teen Titans Go, because it has nice, sharp lines, and it look good to my eyes.

Level 3 won't provide HD Netflix, only level 1. Even then to get official HD support from Netflix you need to have a device whitelisted by Netflix themselves. There was an app which got round this whitelisting though but level 1 is a necessity.

Strange, it looks plenty sharp with the build I downloaded (Netflix 6.8.0 build 28945). Also, when I downloaded Teen Titans Go S01E01 it's 177 MB for a 22m episode. I think that's the HD version, no?

The best way to see if you're getting hd or not is to play the 'test patterns' videos on Netflix and see what resolution it plays up to. In the top right there will be the frame rate and resolution which will increase to your maximum permitted by Netflix. Without Widevine level 1 you won't get HD.
But on the device info page on their website it says that devices with the 670 soc from Qualcomm will have HD: https://help.netflix.com/en/node/23939
There are apps in the play store that show DRM support. If you search for widevine in the play store DRM Info comes up which will tell you what is supported on the device.
ctgchaos can you see what it says on your device?
DRM info shows widevine L3.

Jep and usually you nee L1 Widevine for Netflix and Co. But it seems to work just fine.
Netflix will still work with L3 but you just won't be able to stream higher than 480p. This is also a hardware DRM limitation so unless they do something there, no HD netflix or amazon prime video
For me it looks definitely better than 480p so I doubt that..
Edit: its 480p but it looks better than expected
Netflix said HD should be possible: https://twitter.com/Netflixhelps/status/1030121266982907904

I think they mean it's possible if the MFG wants to do it. Xiaomi doesn't really care though since they don't have Netflix in China.
I'm thinking about buying the Mi Pad 4. Is this still an issue? Netflix won't play higher than 480p?
This has really annoyed me. I've only just discovered that it is not possible to download or stream in HD when using Netflix on the honor 8x.
I bought this damn phone because it has this great screen and yet what's the point if I can't even watch in HD! Not even 720p. And yet honor make such a big deal about this effing screen. What's more is that honor have also said they've got a partnership with Netflix!
I did read apparently huawei are going to fix this via an update this month sometime. Does anyone know about this!?
Regret buying this piece of crap.
you need to install an older version of netflix to play HD, until netflix adds our device in their list to be certified. We should contact honor to make it possible, Ive seen a system app called netflixactivationpartner so maybe they plan to do it soon.
edit: someone posted this here so I guess we are waiting for the update.

Thanks for the response. At least someone else has recognised this issue. I find it mind blowing how this phone does not support HD in Netflix. I mean this is 2018 for crying out loud. Much older devices are doing this already. I don't get the logic behind this.
So are you saying I still might be able to get it off I download an older version? I did try this actually but no luck. Hopefully this upcoming update will resolve this issue. I did read that article so I'm guessing it will...
well, I find it mind blowing that is playing HD, most of the phones in that price do not play including all budget xiaomis and expensive flagships so we are lucky, hopefully we will get the update. I am watching HD not sure if is full though. try version like 5.10.1.
My netflix supports hd after november security update. I also reinstalled netflix app.
