Redmi 5 Plus issues with TWRP - Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 / 5 Plus Questions & Answers

So, where to start.. I just got my redmi note 5 to test all sorts of things on, and my first goal was to successfully unlock it, install TWRP, and root through Magisk.
For this, I've used the 'Flashing TWRP on Redmi 5 Plus (and Root)' guide on the miui blog (can't post the link, unfortunately.)
I unfortunately keep running into a strange problem, which I'm going to explain briefly, because this is the second time that it happened, and I have no idea what to do, to be completely honest.
So, I successfully unlocked my redmi 5 plus, enabled USB debugging, installed ADB Fastboot on my PC, and went on to flash TWRP 3.3.0.0. This worked, the recovery image was properly read, although I could only boot it from fastboot into recovery, by holding the button combination. When trying to reboot after flashing, going into recovery from the system via the console on my pc put me in the normal MIUI recovery. So, I had to flash TWRP again, and do it the way I described. I forgot to mention, but I also copied both Magisk and no-verity to the root folder of my internal storage before installing TWRP, but, when going into TWRP to install, I could not find those zip files.
The internal storage showed as 0MB, and I read that you're supposed to wipe the data, with TWRP, which did in fact let me see the amount of MB on my internal storage, but unfortunately it did not let me find those files either. The sad part is, now my phone is stuck on a bootloop, again, and I can only run either recovery or fastboot, the latter of which I'm going to use to flash stock recovery and do a factory reset, once again.
At this point I'm lost as to what I should do, I'm following the advice from many different sources, and nothing seems to work. Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but being the noob I am, I cannot figure it out .

Give it a shot by trying orange fox recovery
Also I might be wrong but I think there is a fix for 0mb problem

Try OrangeFox Recovery, for me its better than twrp. Internal storage is 0mb because its encrypted, OragneFox can decrypt that partition and make it accessible.
Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! I did try one last thing by just installing magisk on my phone normally, and.. well, it actually worked! I don't have a custom recovery, but I was able to root the phone without any issue, so I think this will suffice for now? In the future though, I'll keep the OrangeFox Recovery in mind.

Nice to see that your problem has been solved! You can thank by hitting "Thanks!" button

Flash twrp
Format data
Then flash twrp in twrp
Flash no variety
Reboot to recovery..
Now you will have your twrp permanently installed as recovery
Now do whatever u like with twrp

[Q] TWRP can't mount dalvik/data

Hi,
My mom has an Asus TF300T running JB 4.2.1. She tried to root and flash OmniROM by herself and borked it somehow. Unfortunately, she didn't do any backup...
She entered the fastboot screen and there she selected wipe. Then she flashed openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.0-tf300tg-JB.blob using fastboot.
Now I am trying to help her rescue it.
It's operational, the OS loads up fine and she can use it, install apps etc.
I can get to the fastboot screen and from there to the TWRP no problem, but TWRP can't mount anything besides system.
No dalvik partition, no data partition, not even the SD or external SD.
Naturally, I can't flash another rom...
Tried executing "fix permissions" from the TWRP menu, it didn't help.
Downloaded the latest official Asus blob file TF300T-US_epad-10_6_1_27_5-UpdateLauncher.zip and flashed it using fastboot, hoping it will restore the missing partitions but it didn't make any difference.
Also tried CWM - same issue.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Sefi

That sounds pretty bad. The factory blob flashed successfully? If it did, did it just bootloop and then you tried another custom recovery? I'm thinking if the factory blob flashed successfully and it didn't work, your only hope beyond sending it in to them would be to use NVflash. However, pretty sure you had to set up NVflash before anything else or an older update for it to work, can't remember off the top of my head. Props to your mom trying to install Omni though. Hope this doesn't deter her from trying on something else. These tablets are a little different than most devices and I had to read a lot to make sure I had everything lined up properly when I've worked on them for customers.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
Yeah the factory blob flashed fine. I can use the device (the OS loads up), I can get into fastboot and from there to TWRP.
There is no backup, and from what I'v read about NVflash, you need to set it up before anything else...
I was hoping the factory blob would recover the partitions...
Is there a way to repartition it?
Maybe using fastboot erase for the data partition?
I guess maybe I am not sure of the exact nature of the issue. If /data was not mounted, you would not be able to install apps. Does it show the proper info in Settings / Storage? Have never seen a device that had the data partition unmount and still be able to use normally while booted.

Accidentally formated sdcard currently in TWRP with no rom.

I am trying to install an AOSP rom and stuffed it up. Here's what I did so far. I normally format the internal sdcard when I flash a new daily driver but forgot I haven't put in an external sdcard.
I am currently now in TWRP with no OS. I want to turn the phone off and put in an exernal sdcard to flash a rom. I am just afraid if I turn it off now I won't be able to get back into recovery.
Just wanted to check if this is possible, otherwise I'll leave it on and attempt a sideload and flash a rom that way (still reading up on this if anyone is familiar would appreciate any advice.)
With Windroid
i) Flashed TWRP
ii) Installed SU
With TWRP
formatted dlavik cache etc etc and, very unfortunately, sdcard as well.
Where I am at with sideload
Trying to follow a tutorial (can't link)
Currently I am at the part where I am installing the sdk bundle to get the adb executable.
change to usb storage mode in twrp, and plug to your pc, copy rom to phone, unmount usb storage mode, flash the rom

Sweet much easier than I thought, what a time to be alive...
ROM currently installing, hope all is good.
Thanks again!
Edit: Also, is it weird that when I press reboot system in TWRP (after the ROM installed) nothing happens? It just stays there. This also happened when I installed SU, I had to take my battery out to reset it and SU was there when it booted back on.
I previously used CWM so a bit new to TWRP.

i tried installing supersu through sideload but didnt worked the rooting is being prevented by encryptions as it shows there..
so , i cant root but i badly want to inatall cm13 on my device can i do that by using sideload without rooting as bootloader is opened.... will it affect my device if i try doing that.... please people help...:crying::crying::crying:
You need to erase the internal storage to have it decrypted. After installation of indian ROM, the phone's internal storage becomes encrypted. In order to decrypt it back, make sure you save everything from your phone inside a computer, then in TWRP, erase/format the internal storage, copy the new ROM that you want to flash via TWRP (you won't have any system installed so you can't reboot otherwise you'll endup in some bootloop). You can Enable MTP to see the device in computer. After you have copied the new ROM, flash it and enjoy. This is my experience on X820 after flashing indian ROM, so I'm not very sure if all described above will work on X821 but you can give it a try. If you brick your device, there is a fix for hard brick as well, so, no worries.
problem decrypting..
I tried it by doing format system.. but it didn't got decrypted... N everything remained same...

In TWRP you need to press "Wipe", then "Advanced Wipe" and select "Inernal Storage", then swipe to wipe. Do note that everything on your phone will be erased, contacts, photos, music, etc. Wiping only system won't decrypt anything.
not working..

i booted into twrp then selected wipe->advanse wipe-> internal storage and then swiped to wipe,..

Try to check in Mount and see if you can change something that can help.
Also someone with X821 maybe can help in this matter.

Hello,
Wolud you be so kind and share some link/info about this solution?
regards Filozof71
boot loop??
If u got into bootloop with a blue dot and phone restarting again and again, simply go into twrp and flash any of the official eui 15s 16s 19s Roms by wipe and install zip.

TWRP shows 0mb internal storage

I'm using TWRP recovery and decided to take a nandroid backup but to my surprise I found it doesn't detect data and/or internal storage partition. I then flashed another recovery but the problem remains there. Now after searching for this fix the result end up with formatting the partitions. Is there any other way to fix this before I take the highway?
Just came to know it's a recovery problem and another recovery called Orange Fox can fix this issue. Let's see.
tried orange fox recovery but still same prob do you find another solution ?
Try this,

Had the same thing occuring with treble recovery. It seems that the password is the same as the one u input after u had installed a ROM. Maybe if you had kept a pin/password for your ROM, keep the same one in the recovery. It shows up as decrypting and allows you to enter the Recovery.

Pocophone F1 no os after sideloading going wrong

Hey all, so it appears that I screwed my phone, I am not sure how.
I was running LineageOS, and wanted to update to Android 10 one, so I followed the steps, and I think I screwed the sideloading part, so... long story short now when rebooting from OrangeFox RecoveryProject it says no OS detected, and when it boots it says encryption unsuccessful, I tried wiping and installing DisableForceEncryption_Treble_v17.2 and restarting, and the same thing happens.
I tried to flash through recovery both, and did not work:
https://xiaomifirmwareupdater.com/firmware/beryllium/
https://xiaomifirmwareupdater.com/archive/vendor/beryllium/
And when trying to flash through miFlash it doesn't work:
I go to fastboot in poco, hit refresh in miflash, it shows a device in the list, but the phone goes dark with 'something key to shutdown` written in the top left corner and if I hit the flash button nothing happens.
Can anyone assist with that please?

This happened to me when I accidentally deleted the OS when flashing the latest MIUI 11 build (using TWRP). THIS IS HOW I FIXED IT.
Find a full firmware of whatever you wanted to flash, either Lineage or MIUI 11. Then flash via your recovery (you said you have orangefox). Use an external sd card, external USB or HDD since you technically wouldn't have access to your internal data. After flashing, same process as most updates, clear cache and dalkiv. Then flash a newer DFE (if you still want to decrypt, there is a page here in xda with it. Or go to miui forums Happybuddhist, the mod there, made a new one prebuilt with Magisk). Then reboot into recovery to make sure you keep your custom recovery. Once booted to recov. Boot to system. Should fix the issue.
You could check my guide here on how to unbrick your pocophone:

I tried that, now I am a step forward I think, I flashed the stock firmware I found, and installed the latest stock ROM, rebooted (doesn't say no os anymore), but the only thing I see is a DELETE ALL DATA button and at the bottom 'Encryption was interrupted and can't be completed. As a result, the data on your phone is no longer accessible.
To resume using your phone, you need to perform a factory reset. When you set up your phone after the reset, you'll have an opportunity to restore any data that was backed up to your Google account.'

So I had an OS-less phone that don't get recognised in MiFlash, and I had orangeFox recovery.
The steps to fix were:
- Flash a full stock Firmware
- Flash the stock ROM
- Flash DFE
- Format data to ext4
- Reboot and it works
So thanks all for your help
