Help with WiFi calling on LG G8 - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi folks,
I recently bought an LG G8 (AT&T, unlocked) on eBay to use with Freedom Mobile in Canada. Prior to purchase, Freedom Mobile reps assured me that the specific model I was getting (LM-G820UM) was compatible.
Overall, it does seem to be working fine, but the option for WiFi calling is greyed out. I went to the Freedom Mobile repair center and they said I need "some software that they forget the name of that is specific to all carriers to be overwritten onto my phone." I have no idea what this is or how to do it. Any tips?
Thank you very much!
More info:
*#*#4636#*#* code showed that neither WiFi Calling nor VoLTE are "provisioned"

I have a similar issue, but it is a Sprint phone and I need WiFi Calling and VoLTE on T-Mobile to work.

How to enable WiFi calling?

VoLTE support for the LG G5 US Unlocked model (RS988)

With the impending 3G network shutdowns by AT&T (on Feburary 2022) and T-Mobile (already done in January 2021; Sprint network will in Janurary 2022), I'm badly in need of another option. My current LG Nexus 5 (International version) won't enable me to survive these shutdowns, as it lacks the full LTE band support for the United States carriers.
After searching for another phone model with the criteria of removable battery, USB-C and unlockable bootloader, I settled on the following listing for a LG G5 (RS988): https://www.ebay.com/itm/LG-G5-RS98...M-Unlocked-Smartphone-8-10-18174/164707426461
The main thing I care about here is whether I can get VoLTE support at all, so that I can continue receiving cellular service beyond 2021. I currently use Cricket, an MVNO which uses AT&T as its network. Unfortunately, AT&T has a whitelist of devices that are allowed to use VoLTE on their network: https://www.att.com/ecms/dam/att/consumer/help/pdf/Devices-Working-on-ATT-Network.pdf. They do list the AT&T version of the LG G5 (H820), but it is bootloader locked. If I cannot use get this phone to work on AT&T, I will have no choice but to switch to T-Mobile or an MVNO using its network, such as MetroPCS. They have already shutdown their main 3G network, and also require VoLTE, but at least they don't have a whitelist that only allows me to use certain devices.
Looking at the custom ROMs, including LineageOS, it seems that none of them have VoLTE support, which is critical for me if I decide to switch to T-Mobile or one of their MNVOs. I could also see if there are any ROMs based on the stock ROM. If all else fails, I can resort to using the stock ROM/OS and then root it. However, this opens up another problem: I cannot tell if there exists a stock Android 8.1 Oreo ROM for the RS988; everything I read so far seems to indicate that I will only get up to Android 7.1 Nougat on this particular model.
As I have accepted an offer for $55 down from $64.99 in the above listing, and cannot decline to buy it, changing to another phone model is no longer an option for me in terms of keeping my cellular service working. Since I will be stuck with this RS988 for the next few years, can someone tell me what is the current situation about VoLTE support, whether for AT&T or T-Mobile, and which ROM I should stick on to gain this support? Losing my cellular service in 2022 is not going to end well for me if it does happen.

I'm up against the same VoLTE wall (had a Blackberry Passport 4 years) and right now only finding VoLTE in Nougat ROM... TBH, I don't want Oreo b/c of that "A-B parition" buisness

I feel ya bro, right now I'm on a "burner" (LG-Stylo, for big screen) due to this concern. Did you ever find a ROM for RS988 with VoLTE?

You came in a tad too late; by now, I ended up getting an entirely newer phone, a Motorola Moto G Power (2020) via Google Fi bill credit. Though its battery is not meant to be user-replaceable, at least it has support for VoLTE out of the box, which is what I care about more.

G8X No Longer Works On Cricket??

Is anyone else having problems getting the LG G8X to work on Cricket? I would really like to use my phone again on Cricket. Here's a post I made to a different forum:
I own a factory unlocked LG G8X (LM-G850QM) running Android 11, Software version G850QM30a, Android security patch August 1, 2021. Checking for updates says I am running the latest software version for current OS. Using the IMEI compatibility checker on Cricket’s website tells me my device is compatible. I returned to Cricket on February 25th after having tried Mint Mobile. (I only got 1 bar of reception with Mint). So after signing back up with Cricket on the 25th my service worked great for two weeks. Then starting on March 10th all incoming calls started going directly to voicemail. Any outgoing call I tried to make immediately gave me a “Call Ended” message. I contacted Cricket support and was told I needed to enable the HD Voice option on my phone. No such setting exists. (I’m with Verizon now and that setting exists. It just disappears when the Cricket SIM is inserted.) Using the *#*#4636#*#* menu I can see that VoLTE is not being provisioned. I was then told by Cricket support that my phone is not compatible with their network.
Today I called LG Support to see if they could offer any information. The LG Rep told me my phone is compatible and should work. The Rep even offered to do a 3 way call with Cricket to see what the issue is. First Cricket tried telling me that the issue was because my phone is an unlocked phone. The LG Rep told the Cricket Rep that the whole point of an unlocked phone is that it is compatible with all carriers. Then the Cricket Rep said it was probably because LG is no longer making mobile phones. The LG Rep said that was wrong and that LG would continue to support its current phones. Finally, the Cricket Rep said that my phone was recently removed from their list of supported phones. It still shows as compatible with the IMEI checker. The LG Rep asked why the phone was removed from the list of supported phones, and the Cricket Rep had no answer.
Im starting to think that I have a perfectly fine, fully capable unlocked phone that Cricket will not allow on their network because they want me to buy one of their phones. Im not sure how this is legal or what I can do about it. Has anyone else had a similar experience?
Oh and Cricket also refused to refund the purchase I made on Feb 25th for $75 (SIM, Activation, 1 Month of service). Cricket suggested I call my card issuer and dispute the charges.
I had an unlocked Sprint LG G8X that I used on Cricket for all of last year and then they kept telling me was about to stop working back in Febuary.. So, I just bought another G8X that was AT&T branded instead of Sprint. It's been working just fine but unfortunately its on Android 9 and wont do the OTA update.

US S21 5G not registering on any mobile networks?

Hi,
I'm in South Africa and I bought a SM-G991U1 (US unlocked version) on Amazon Renewed and everything works fine except for mobile connectivity.
I get the "Your phone's not registered on a network" message if I try to make a call and mobile data does not work.
I've tried:
- Resetting network settings
- Manually setting APN details
- Tried a few other SIMs from different carriers as well that work in other phones
- Checked IMEI info, doesn't seem corrupted or 'null'
I suspect that the modem firmware or something else is region specific to the US on this model and not working on South African networks as the phone does support our network bands according to GSMarena.
Would it be possible to re-flash the modem firmware or fix the issue some other way?
Hello I'm having the same problem, have you find any info about it?
Not much, I went to a carrier store and the phone seemed to work alright there after rebooting the phone with the sim card installed. I am starting to suspect that the phone doesn't like my closest cell tower maybe? Or possibly doesn't like using another carrier's mobile tower?
No idea.
I've since bought an identical but South African version of the same S21 which works flawlessly.
As a quick rant for anyone considering buying from Amazon: I tried to return the phone, shipping it back to the US and everything, only for Amazon to refuse to pay the import duties on it once it arrived, forcing DHL send it right back and charging me for it again
